“Being text-focused has been really beneficial and a change from the way I've seen concerts programmed in the past: ‘Do the keys align? What is the soundscape?' Those things are important, but for these concerts, the message that we're putting out there has to be priority. We are choral musicians, and we have words and stories to share, and those have to take precedent.”Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake works as a conductor, composer/arranger, vocal contractor, singer, and music activist. Blake is the Founding Artistic Director of Tonality, an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace, and social justice through a culturally diverse choral setting. He also serves as Principal Associate Conductor of the National Children's Chorus. As an arranger, Blake's “Wade in the Water” was a featured arrangement at the 2013 North Carolina Music Educators Association convention and is published with Santa Barbara Music Publishing. His choral arrangements are published by Alliance Music Publishing and Walton Music Publishing. Other musical activities include an opera conducting premiere at the 2019 Prototype Festival in New York City, preparing choirs for live performances with UCLA Center for the Art of Performance, and vocally arranging for a nationally televised performance during the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.Recent film and TV credits include singing on the soundtrack of Jordan Peele's “Us,” Disney's “Lion King,” and Pixar's “Spies in Disguise,” and leading sessions for Warner Bros "Space Jam: A New Legacy" and Netflix film "Escape from Spiderhead." Blake also worked as the choral contractor and vocal arranger for Andy Grammer's performance at the 2019 ARDYs (Radio Disney Awards). In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Patricia and Arun discuss about Blue Sky Studios' last animation film before Fox was bought by Disney and the shutdown of the company, the 2019 animated film Spies in Disguise. Lance Sterling is the greatest secret agent in the H.T.U.V (Honor, Trust, Unity, and Valor) agency. When he returns from a mission of stealing a suitcase containing a drone from a Japanese arm dealer, it's empty. Security camera footage shows Lance stealing the drone while escaping from a helicopter. Lance tries to claim his innocence, but they don't believe him. He then goes into hiding towards one of the former gadget and weapons builders named Walter when he learns that he can make someone disappear. It turns out that the serum Walter was experimenting on wasn't complete and Lance ends up turning into a pigeon. With his new disguise, he and Walter travel around to find out who is impersonating as him. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $171 million dollars out of a $100 million dollar budget making it the lowest grossing Blue Sky Studios film ever made. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics praising the animation and the performances of Will Smith and Tom Holland. What did Arun and Patricia think of Blue Sky Studios' swan song...or pigeon song? Listen and find out. Blessings can come in mysterious ways. But is it possible to ever consider something tragic a blessing? This week Charles Tapp helps you recognize the blessings God may be putting in front of you right now before you miss them, as he shares his message "A Blessing In Disguise."
As we come to the end of another liturgical year and conclude our weekly meditation on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, the Church gives us Jesus's parable on the Last Judgment. Jesus brings to the fore the mandate that we have as his followers to perform the Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, care for the sick, etc. But the radically of today's Gospel message lies in the fact that Jesus himself so identifies himself with his beloved poor that he unites himself with them, such that he can say, "Whatever you did (or did not do) for these least ones, you did (or did not do) for me." Imbibing this truth, Mother Teresa would tell her sisters that when they went out to serve the poorest of the poor, they were encountering their Lord "in his distressing disguise." Our conviction that Jesus makes himself truly present at the Mass leads us to seek him there. But when Mass is finished, we must continue to seek him out where we know him to be -- in his poor -- by performing the corporal works of mercy. According to Jesus, our salvation depends on it!

Welcome to Episode #112 of "The Other Side of the Bell", a podcast brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. In this episode, John talks with Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell about their recently released album called "Homage" by the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble. We hope you'll enjoy their conversation as well as the album. Join us at Dillon Music, November 9-11 for valve alignments and mouthpiece consultations. Email sales@dillonmusic to schedule an appointment! About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage" The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present. Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson. Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit. Bergeron has worked on over 500 TV & motion picture soundtracks. A partial list of film credits includes Red Notice, Turning Red, Soul, Bob's Burgers, Ford vs. Ferrari, Toy Story 4, Frozen 1 & 2, The Lion King (2019), The Secret Life of Pets, Wreck it Ralph 2, Crazy Rich Asians, Sing 1&2, Moana, Frozen 1 & 2, Get On Up, Toy Story 3, Monsters University, High School Musical 3, Get Smart, Superman Returns, The Simpson's Movie, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Mission Impossible 3, Ice Age 2, Spiderman 1 & 2, Team America and South Park. Bergeron's featured trumpet solos can be heard on the motion pictures West Side Story (2021 Steven Spielberg), La La Land, Sing, The Incredibles 1 & 2, Rocky Balboa, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Rough Night, Jazzman's Blues, Vacation Friends, Ted 2, Minions, Minions 2:The Rise of Gru, Spies in Disguise, Jersey Boys, The Green Hornet, The Interview, Despicable Me 1, 2 & 3, Duplicity, Princess & the Frog, The Perfect Game,, Hey Arnold (the movie), The Rat Pack, Child Star, Aladdin King of Thieves and High Crimes and many others. Numerous TV credits include Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, SAG Awards, NBC, ESPN & TNT sports themes, American Idol (2001-02), Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, Animaniacs Reboot, Family Guy, American Dad, Simpson's, Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, The Cleveland Show, Green Eggs and Ham, Jeopardy, America's Funniest Home Videos, Will and Grace, Phineas & Ferb, Emperor's New School, Mouse Works, Have a Laugh, House of Mouse, King of the Hill, Futurama, Buzz Lightyear, Hercules, and Hey Arnold. Bergeron's greatest love is playing lead in big bands. He has recorded and played with some of Los Angeles' most respected bands including Gordon Goodwin, Arturo Sandoval, Pat Williams, Sammy Nestico, Jack Sheldon, Chris Walden, Tom Kubis, John La Barbara, Bob Florence, Joey Sellers, Ray Anthony, Bill Watrous, Bob Curnow, and Quincy Jones. After being behind the scene for so many years, Bergeron stepped out on his own with his first solo effort, You Call This a Living? This debut project earned him a Grammy nomination in 2004 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, as well as rave reviews from fans and press worldwide. Bergeron's second CD, Plays Well With Others, released on the Concord Jazz label in 2007, was met with the same acclaim. Bergeron's most current (and personal favorite) CD, Full Circle, was released in January of 2016. Bergeron performs various events for the Hollywood Bowl summer season. He has done guest appearances with the L.A. Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Taiwan Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic. Bergeron is a National Artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America and is co-designer of the YTR-8335LA trumpet and YFH-8315G Flugelhorn. Bergeron also designed a series of trumpet mouthpieces with Gary Radtke of GR Technologies that are available through Bergeron's website. Bergeron was mentored by legends Uan Rasey, Bobby Shew, Warren Luening, Gary Grant, Rick Baptist, and George Graham. Bergeron hopes to inspire a new generation of young players and enjoys his work as a clinician and educator. “Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than hearing a young musician say that I inspired them or had a positive influence on their life. For me, that's the real payday.” Bergeron is currently on faculty at California State University Northridge. Perhaps Grammy winning composer and bandleader, Gordon Goodwin said it best, “Wayne is a once in a lifetime lead trumpet player.” About Jeff Bunnell Trumpeter Jeff Bunnell has enjoyed a successful career in many musically diverse settings. This week, the boys discuss Superman's famous disguise as Clark Kent and why it both works and doesn't work. They discuss it in the Christopher Reeve, Zack Snyder, Superman and Lois, New 52, Rebirth, and other media to contemporize the conversation and show example of when it works and how to make it work for Superman Legacy. While the Clark Kent discuss is, in itself, iconic, it is one of the most misunderstood portions of Superman's lore, particularly in terms of the general audience, so it is prudent to have this discussion. What do you think? How would you adapt the Clark Kent disguise? What are some ways it works? What are reasons why it doesn't work? What The Riff?!? makes another "stab" at Halloween with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre. We hope you enjoy this second "Halloween" special! Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran This is the breakthrough song off Duran Duran's Rio album. It was inspired by the Big Bad Wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood story. It is also wone of the first times where video popularity drove the success of the band, with Duran Duran on constant play for the new MTV station.Dead Man's Party by Oingo Boingo Danny Elfman fronted this new wave band before he became famous for his work on film scores. It also appeared in the comedy film "Back to School" starring Rodney Dangerfield. This Is Halloween by Marilyn Manson Oingo Boingo wrote this track for "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and shock rocker Marilyn Manson takes on this cover.Theme from the "Harry Potter" film series The Wizarding world of Harry Potter has been an enduring franchise, and this music draws us into that world from the first few notes.Pet Sematary by The Ramones Steven King was a big fan of the Ramones, and invited the band to his place in Maine. While there Dee Dee Ramone wandered into the basement with a copy of King's "Pet Sematary" and returned an hour later with the lyrics to this song.Bad Things by Jace Everett "True Blood" is a series on HBO based on a novel called "The Southern Vampire Mysteries," and the show portrays vampires in a campy, dark comedy style. Country singer-songwriter Jace Everett provided the intro music to this series.Werewolf Bar Mitzvah by Donald Glover and Tracy Morgan A skit in the television series "30 Rock" would produce this song. Originally a 7-second clip from a skit, it was turned into a full fledged Halloween novelty song due to popular demand.Witch Doctor by David Seville The origins of this song go back to 1958, where Seville tells the story of how a guy learned to talk to girls from a witch doctor friend. It has become a well known novelty song covered by a number of artists.Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley The King dropped this single in 1963 about a girl who uses her charm to manipulate people to get what she wants. It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard singles chart. You're Dead by Norma Tanega Singer-songwriter and experimental musician Norma Tanega was better known for writing songs for Dusty Springfield. But if you do, make sure you're the best fiddler that there has ever been. Charlie Daniels would peak at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song.Runnin' with the Devil by Van Halen The first album that Van Halen produced was a monster in itself, and this track was the first one on the album. It is a great introduction to the band, not only for Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, but also for David Lee Roth's screams, Michael Anthony's high harmonies, and Alex Van Halen's percussion work.
Our brains can be kind of tricky sometimes. They often like to give us thoughts that sound nice, but which can actually be harmful and cause us pain. In fact, some of our most poisonous thoughts walk around our minds disguised as helpful, useful, reasonable, and sometimes even “positive” thoughts. Today on the podcast I'll show you how three thoughts (that your brain probably gives you on a daily or weekly basis) might be causing you to feel powerless, frustrated, and ashamed—but you might not even know it because they are disguised so well. I'll teach you how to find all your poisonous, harmful thoughts in disguise so that you can unmask them, let them go, and feel better. On Halloween we are accustomed to the festivities that come with the Holiday. Costumes, candy, and playful pranks are part of many communities who embrace the spirit of fun and revelry. But in 2012, in Mount Pleasant Michigan, one man let the evil lurking within him take control. Instead of celebrating the holiday, he unleashed a darkness that would send shockwaves through his community. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/twisted-travel-and-true-c/support

And like all the others, I loved it and I'm a bigger GBA fan than I already was. What a great little system, and a great little game. I'm a big Wario fan, but I haven't played a ton of his games. This one is a prime example of why I need to fix that. It's not super long or super complicated, but it doesn't have to be. It looks great, plays well, sounds awesome, and it's charming as fuck. And it's Wario, so it can't possibly be bad. My pal Bradley McCue makes his return to the show this week to talk about exploring pyramids, scooping treasure, and "hurrying up!", and recording this episode was almost as much fun as playing this game. Minus those boss fights. Fuck them. And before we "hurry up", I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me for some recommendations on games to play with their non-gaming spouse. Will we ever do another video game draft episode of Expansion Pass? And if money was no object, what kind of gaming room would I put together? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one's the Wario edition: Shake It!, Master of Disguise, and WarioWorld. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bible Reading: Hebrews 2:9, 17-18; 4:14-16"Look at me! I'm a newsboy!" Rhett pranced around the room in an outfit that included a brown cap, a gray vest, and a shoulder bag with old newspapers inside."You certainly look like a newsboy," Dad said. "What's all this for? A costume party or something?"Rhett nodded. "Yeah, our history class is having a costume party on Friday, and there's a prize for the best costume. I decided to dress up as a newsboy from the eighteen hundreds. Don't you think I look just like the real thing? I hope I win that prize!" He winced and kicked off his shoes. "Ouch! These shoes hurt!""Well, if you want to be realistic, that's good," said Dad. "Newsboys during that time were very poor, and many were homeless orphans, so their shoes probably didn't fit very well. They didn't always have a roof over their heads either, or three square meals a day. If they didn't make enough selling newspapers, they went hungry.""Wow," said Rhett. "I didn't realize how hard life was for them. I don't want to be the real thing. I just want to pretend.""That's what I thought." Dad grinned at Rhett. "But you know what? Jesus did become the real thing!""What are you talking about?" asked Rhett. "Jesus was never a newsboy.""No, not a newsboy," said Dad. "But when He came to earth, Jesus became human--the real thing--just like one of us. He didn't wear some disguise and pretend to be a man. He was still God, but He also became a man, just like any other man except that He never sinned. It's hard for us to understand how that could be, but it's one of the wonderful things about Jesus. Because He really and truly became human, we know He understands and cares about all the situations we face.""It would be tough not to have a home or enough food," said Rhett. "And I guess it must have been tough for Jesus to leave heaven and come to live on earth.""I'm sure it was," said Dad. "I remember an old song that talks about the huge difference between earth and the glories of heaven, which Jesus left. One line says, 'Only His great, eternal love made my Savior go.' We have so much to thank Him for!" - Tanya FerdinanduszHow About You?Do you feel like no one understands what you're going through? Jesus does. Although Jesus is fully God, He also became fully human. So when you're tempted to sin, or when kids make fun of you for being a Christian, or when you feel lonely and left out, know that Jesus understands exactly how you feel. Depend on Him to help you through every situation.Today's Key Verse:This High Priest of ours [Jesus] understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
