More starter decks! This is a big one. Andy gets into the nitty-gritty of what he's up to with his oft-talked-about favorite: Niv-Mizzet, Parun. Join us, as Andy outlines how he departed from the usual Niv-Mizzet combos and landed on some other compelling and effective plays for Niv-Mizzet. He shares both his ode to the dragon and a starter deck version that can be a softer launch into the beloved spell slinger. As always, if you are a Patreon supporter, you can find deck lists on the Discord server. Season 18, Episode 11: Brewer's Guide to March of the Machine: The Aftermath Fifty more cards are being foisted onto all formats with March of the Machine: the Aftermath, a small supplemental set full of wordy text boxes and big dreams. Luckily, only a handful are poised to make an impact in non-rotating formats. In today's compressed Set Review, Cavedan and Morde sort the wheat from the chaff and identify the most important Aftermath cards for Modern and Pioneer. They also evaluate the newly revealed Ring Temptation mechanic, and the extended Standard rotation aimed at reviving tabletop play. Like our content? Season 17, Episode 7: Brew Session (Atraxa, Grand Unifier) + Flashback (Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler) Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a tremendous creature. No one would dispute that. But is it really possible that Atraxa is the strongest creature in all of Magic? Recent tournament results from Standard, Legacy, Modern, and even Vintage have seen Atraxa decks soaring to the top of the standings. This is a heavyweight creature, much more likely to be cheated into play than cast fairly. But once on the battlefield, Atraxa does things other creatures can only dream of. Her trigger looks at a massive 10 cards (1/6th of a typical library), making this less of a “draw 4 cards” and more of a “draw 10, discard 6.” And unlike Niv-Mizzet Reborn, Atraxa grants access to these cards with almost no deckbuilding concessions. Want to use Atraxa to grab a Mox Amber and an Ephemerate? You are welcome to, and you even keep a few other cards for your trouble. What truly sets Atraxa apart is how she helps you even before entering the battlefield. For better or worse, we live in the era of free pitch cards, and Atraxa pitches to everything from Solitude and Grief (more Ephemerate targets) to Force of Vigor and Force of Negation. That means your Atraxa turn doesn't have to end when you tap out for Atraxa, as you can follow up with a Grief or even a free protection spell like Not Of This World. The sky is the limit for Atraxa, and her price has been skyrocketing accordingly. We'll do our part this week to drive that price even higher, as we attempt to find new homes for Atraxa in both Modern and Pioneer. Whatever happens, one thing is clear: never bet against a Niv-Mizzet trigger! Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! This episode of Legend Lore takes us out of the Forgotten Realms and into the first Magic: the Gathering setting: Ravnica. But is the book Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica worth the price tag? One of the Dungeon Masters comes in skeptical to start with, but with 10 guilds, a deep bestiary, and a fantastic layout, it's no surprise when things keep looking better and better for Niv-Mizzet, Rakdos, and the other inhabitants within these pages. Niv Mizzet is (apparently) in control of modern, and other monsters are running rampant in Ikoria! TONS of spoilers to talk about on this episode, so come check them out! Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music.
Welcome in to a new episode of the Tryhard Academy Podcast. In this episode, Cole will be taking the reins predominantly to discuss Niv-Mizzet, Parun; both as a creature, and as a Curiosity-oriented control deck formulated for the cEDH gamespace. While this deck may look like a throwback on the surface (to old school decks involving Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind), don't let the name fool you. This draw-go control style of build has more than one way to "skin a cat", and is fairly resilient to many different types of commonly occurring stax pieces. When it comes to explosive bouts of Weird Science, few can do it better than Niv-Mizzet himself. Don't forget your safety glasses for this one. ========================================================= DISCLAIMER: All audio/video footage appears courtesy of the respective authors and proprietors under the Creative Commons License. I’ve always loved drawing cards and being able to do damage to others was something I totally loved. I don’t claim to be great at building decks, but back then the way I built decks was way different than I do now. I didn’t exactly do slot theory and it was mostly just slam in good cards and hope for the best. I was doing pretty well with it for a while, but as time went on and I added more cards just for the heck of it the deck got worse and kind of fell out of favor. Near the end of 2019 I had been trying to make a draw-all-the-cards and take-all-the-turns type deck. At first I thought this would be a good strategy for Emry, but then realized, hey why not revisit Niv Mizz. The new theme for niv was Draw all the cards, take all the turns, and wheels. I have played five games with Niv since I have revamped and won all five. Niv Mizz, the Parun 1 Dictate of Kruphix Didn't love the symmetrical nature 1 Experimental Frenzy Didn't love how it played 1 Merchant Scroll removing tutors 1 Firemind's Foresight Never really knew what to fetch 1 Palinchron slotted in thinking i'd do a combo, but never did 1 The Mirari Conjecture didn't love how it played 1 Venser, Shaper Savant didn't love how it played Cards I took out and why: 1 Arcane Signet Mana Fixing 1 Dictate of the Twin Gods double damage from things like commander and psychosis crawler 1 Expropriate Moar Turns 1 Insurrection Win Condition 1 Leyline of Anticipation Love instant speed everything 1 Mind's Eye Cheap Card Draw 1 Nexus of Fate Moar Turns 1 Thought Reflection Double Card Draw Double Damage 1 Torbran, Thane of Red Fell Extra Damage 1 Windfall Wheels 1 Dockside Extortionist Ryan said it was good Cards I added and why With the stable I can see what cards I’ve added and if something new doesn’t feel right you can always see what you removed. Decks need to have good synergies in them, not just combos or combos at all. Also just because a card is good, doesn’t mean it’s great for every deck. What is the deck you’ve revamped the most? Did it work out for you? We want to know. Summary Main Topic - Updating your decks Thanks for watching / listening! Keep it Social! Faithless Brewing, Episode 43: Ox of Agonas Bedlam Reveler is a gem of a Magic card. When it is fully powered, you get an above-rate creature (3/4 prowess for RR) that also draws three new cards. That's a straight up 4-for-1, a better rate than Ancestral Recall. Are there hoops to jump through? Sure, but that hasn't stopped Reveler from finding a home in Mardu Pyromancer (may it rest in peace) and more recently in Red Prowess. When surrounded by the right pieces, Reveler provides a powerful endgame that thrives on what red decks are already interested in doing. If a 4-for-1 off Reveler sounds attractive, can we interest you in a 4-for-0? That's right, no cock and bull: how about an above-rate creature (5/3 for RR) that you can cast directly from your graveyard, and still draw three new cards to boot. We're entering Niv-Mizzet territory in terms of raw card advantage, but with an efficiency and built-in recursion that is in a class by itself. Why buy the cow when you can escape it for free? This week, we're grabbing the horns of Ox of Agonas, the most exciting creature to break loose from the underworld of Theros. This won't be our first rodeo with the escape mechanic, but there are no sacred cows in brewing. The Titans may have more pedigree, and Breach may steal headlines, but it would be a terribull misteak to leave this mad cow in the bullpen. Unlike Reveler, the Raging Bull is agnoxtic about what card types it will eat: spells, creatures, fetch lands, everything is fuel to a four-chambered stomach. Modern Dredge has already been beefed up by the Red Bull, but can it also give wings to other strategies? We're feeling bullish on Ox of Agonas, and we've got brews til the cows come home in both Modern and Pioneer. Plenty to ruminate on, but we'll steer you in the right direction! Faithless Brewing, Episode 33: Crested Sunmare Giddy-up, brewers! It's Horse week at Faithless Brewing, the theme episode you never knew you needed, but now can't recall how you ever lived without. David has been champing at the bit to get Crested Sunmare on the docket, a truly majestic steed that nevertheless failed to cross the finish line during its time in Standard. But don't believe the neighsayers! Despite this rather equestrian Standard pedigree, Sunmare has already galloped to a Grand Prix Day 2 finish in Modern of all places. Was it simply a lack of enablers that made the Standard builds come up lame? Or will the Modern shell prove to be a one-trick pony? In the greener pastures of Pioneer, David thinks he has a thoroughbred, but will his unbridled enthusiasm land him on the whinnying side? There's only one way to find out! This week we've got the horses in the back, horse decklists attached, sleeves are matte black, got the tokens black to match. Saddle up! ALSO: This week, we have a very special bonus episode! We joined forces with our friends at The Dive Down for our first-ever podcast crossover, a deep dive into Niv-Mizzet Reborn in Modern! You can find that episode (The Dive Down, Ep. 51: "ROY G. Faithless Brewing, Episode 32: Scrap Trawler, New Perspectives, Astral Drift It was a golden weekend for Niv-Mizzet at Grand Prix Columbus, with Dan and Damon both posting 10-4-1 finishes with our favorite Faithless Brew. Is Niv the last control deck in Modern? What we do know is that, at the last Grand Prix of 2019, Niv quietly had one of the best performances of any archetype in the field. This week, however, we depart from the realm of flashy five-color control, and turn our attention instead to some truly bizarre combos. Scraps from the Oven? New Perspectives? Astral Drift Turbo-Land? Oh yes, these are going to be spicy ones. We are joined this week by special guest brewer Danny Salvatore, fresh off a Top 4 finish at the SCG Invitational. We talk about his preparations in Modern and Pioneer leading up to the Invi and the GP, before we collectively dive headfirst into assembling the combo machine. Faithless Brewing, Episode 31: Witch's Oven Let's face it, Vantress Gargoyle is probably not going to make the leap to eternal playable anytime soon. It struggles to attack in Pioneer, although our Modern explorations did yield some very interesting builds using powerful tools like Archive Trap and Into the Story. That being said, when a card can't even hack it in Standard, we shouldn't ask too much of it off the bat. On the other hand, when a card is dominating Standard and meets the benchmark metrics for eternal playability (best in class effect, highly efficient, useful card type) it is certainly worth a closer look. Witch's Oven fits that bill. The "Kentucky Fried Kitten" / "Meow Mix" combo with Cauldron Familiar was a breakout star at the most recent Mythic Championships, and those two have started to make some inroads into Pioneer as well. But how good is this combo really? And is there more to the Oven than just cat food? While Damon and Dan are busy prepping Niv-Mizzet in Modern for GP Columbus, David has been cooking up some spicy Oven lists that he thinks just might hit the sweet spot. Flashback: Vantress Gargoyle Modern Simic Flying Goyfs: 3-2 league. Extremely effective at finding big flyers and attacking with them, but struggles against creature decks and high density of removal. Sultai Flying Goyfs: 2-3 league, noticeably clunkier than the Simic version because Glimpse and Hedron Crab fight for mana, but some additions like Drown in the Loch are well worth the price of admission. Gargoyles, Please!: 2-3 league. Yes, this is a Modern list with four copies of Didn't Say Please. The concept here is not bad, but the execution could use refinement. Turbo Trap Control: 4-1 league. This strategy might be secretly excellent. Needs a more diverse set of spells in the main deck, but Mystic Sanctuary + Into the Story is incredible and the sideboard juke plan can steal games. Pioneer Emry Ascendancy: achieved numerous turn 3 kills, but this deck relies super heavily on Emry surviving, and probably shouldn't run any Gargoyles as they can never attack Gargoyle Gift: 3-2 league, Gargoyle is actually a decent blocker here and synergizes with both Kiora and Gift Bonus list: Retraction Helix Ascendancy by MrRaeb Brew Session: Witch's Oven Pioneer Sketch 1: Sultai Cat Dredge Sketch 2: Rakdos Bone Picker Sketch 3: Grixis Emerge Oven Sketch 4: Orzhov Life Gain Modern Utopia Niv-Mizzet (GP Columbus build) Contact Us Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/faithlessbrewingIf you like our show, be sure to join our community of brewers! Faithless Brewing, Episode 29: The Royal Scions (Modern & Pioneer) Kiora delivered us a fresh 5-0 last week, but we knew that would happen, as Kiora has always been great. The combination with Glorybringer is excellent in Modern and even stronger in Pioneer, although the mana requirements proved to be much trickier without the smooth shock-fetch manabase. Eldrazi add an interesting wrinkle to the Gruul ramp archetype, and Niv-Mizzet got in on the 5-0 action too. This week, we're on to the next 3 CMC walker with absurdly high loyalty. Oko has already been widely accepted as planeswalker royalty, but what about Eldraine's actual royalty, the dashing Kenrith Kids? Two useful +1s and an achievable ultimate make The Royal Scions an attractive card to brew around, in both Modern and Pioneer. We've got more than a dozen new lists, so whether you like looting for value, unlocking graveyard synergies, or pumping creatures and turning them sideways, there's something for everyone this week! What is the stable? It’s a place to keep the decks you play often, up-to-date. This is not for ALL of your decks (unless you only have a few decks) I have like 25 decks, and I’m not proposing to keep up with all of them, I’m proposing that you select the true gems, the ones you you always have fun playing, and thinking about This can be nice if you have decks in many different tools, such as Tappedout, or Archidekt, or the new Scryfall Deck Editor It’s a single place you can access that has all your decks in one place. There’s a social component to the stable as well. I propose that folks can share their Stable with other people, and that it can be a way to let other people (in person and on the internet) get to know them. A business card that you can hand to other folks that says “I’m this kind of Commander player!” I like the idea of doing this because I am constantly updating decks, but don’t have a way to track those changes and if they are improvements or not. Ryan - Historical Data! The chances of getting a deck exactly the way you want it the first time you play it is pretty slim. This lets you track what’s working for you and not working for you. A way to force us to consider upgrading decks Summary - This probably isn’t a new idea, and it’s probably something that some of you out in audience land already do. I just wanted to establish this idea, and get some conversation around this topic, maybe also establish some common terms we can use in this discussion. Also, I’m really bad at updating decks, and we’ll see this when I get to my personal Stable later this episode This is player dependant, but the more decks in your stable, probably the less attention you can give to each deck. Probably no more than 10 depending on how often you play. How many decks should be in a stable? Spreadsheets Obvs! Braids, Conjurer Adept 12/18/2015 Last, and definitely not least. This is probably my oldest deck, that I still consistently play. One of the reasons I’m so hesitant to update this deck is that it is one of my favorites, and it’s really hitting the sweet spot between flavor and function, and I don’t want to mess it up. If I keep the historical data, I can always go back to a previous version of the deck, and I don’t have to be scared of messing it up Jaya Ballard, Task Mage Ryan’s Stable Available to the public here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wkry2pB66Xpj8BR2YfHsKysLMmAq5oV8K58UIYpoVUs Created when Modern Horizons released Yawgmoth, Thran Physician Created when War of the Spark released Tatyova, Benthic Druid Created when Guilds of Ravnica released. Faithless Brewing, Episode 20: Kethis, the Hidden Hand Throne of Eldraine is around the corner and the previews are coming fast and furious. Some look sweet, some look strange, and some look downright broken, including a certain strange woman lying in a pond distributing swords. That's no basis for a system of government. In the meantime, though, we've got unfinished business with Core Set 2020. Kethis, the Hidden Hand had a surprising breakout late in the Standard season, anchoring a slick combo deck full of powerful legendaries. Modern has even more enticing options, but can this bizarre strategy withstand the transition to the lightning-fast eternal format? Or should Kethis be reimagined as the centerpiece of a midrange build? The crew has some ideas, so let's discuss! Faithless Brewing, Episode 19: Kiora, Niv-Mizzet, Kolaghan's Command Faithless Looting is gone, and our beloved "non-rotating" format is in upheaval once again. Tournament results are trickling in, but in the Magic Online leagues, it's the Wild West: everyone has dusted off their midrange decks, hoping that strategies that have always fared poorly will finally get a chance to breathe in a graveyard-free Modern. It is a great time to be a brewer. With seemingly endless possibilities to explore, this week the crew revisits some old favorites: Faithless Brews that were powerful before Modern Horizons, but couldn't keep up with the madness of Hogaak Summer. Faithless Brewing, Episode 16: Niv-Mizzet Deep Dive It's a Hogaak summer, it is what it is, but Niv's a 5-star dragon and we know he's got it lit. Faithless Brewing, Episode 3: Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner War of the Spark is chock full of spicy planeswalkers, so it’s no surprise that Dan wants to go deep on… Kiora? Yes, Kiora! The Behemoth Expert ramps you like a big Arbor Elf (or a mini-Garruk, or a bootleg Amulet) and also keeps the cards flowing. This puts her in a class of her own. But can this intriguing engine find a home in Modern? David has some ideas, so let’s discuss! Flashback: Niv-Mizzet Reborn It was a promising week of Niv-Mizzet testing. Many dragon avatars were brought to light, and many, many cards were drawn. The control shell proved 5-0 worthy and is a solid concept, but the mana base needs more basic lands and the best ramp option has yet to be determined (Birds of Paradise? Sakura-Tribe Elder? Sarkhan Fireblood?). David also had good results with a turbo-ramp midrange shell, so there’s a lot here still to explore. We're continuing our Fall stroll through Ravnica by starting our guild series with the Izzet League. There's no sweater wearing or corn mazes found around Nivix. Only "science bitch!" Andy and Kyle dive into exploring the identity of each guild and kick things off with Izzet. Andy takes a stab at how to build around Niv-Mizzet, Parun. Kyle then brings us back to look at the Kenrith twins. Did we sleep on these Battlebond pit fighters? Wizards of the Coast gave us a cool new card from Guilds of Ravnica: Crackling Drake! Patrick Chapin & MIke Flores discuss the new set with Izzet flavor.
Howdy y'all! We're back again! Sorry about our break last week, with the holiday weekend things just didn't line up. Anyway, here's that Buy-a-Box spoiler discussion we promised. We also talk about the shocklands, promo spoilers, and mechanics of the upcoming set. And you better bet we'll be ripping into that new Niv Mizzet, Golgari legend (with Undergrowth, no less, good call Chris), and anything else that gets revealed before next Sunday next time! Credits to awkwardbun on Twitch for the fantastic artwork, Ant Neely for his song "Might As Well Whistle", which we obtained from the Free Music Archive (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Ant_Neely/), and of course Wizards of the Coast and Magic the Gathering for giving us something to talk about! Are you looking to get on the right side of the plague gods from Hour of Devastation? Kyle and Andy bring Cody in from their local play group to talk about The Scarab God. He breaks down his mill, wheel, and steal strategy and the key components he feels you need to enjoy this Nicol Bolas inspired zombie infestation, without using infinite combos. Andy then dives into his build for The Locust God. But wait.... shhh... don't tell Niv-Mizzet! Andy doesn't want the Firemind finding out about Andy's sudden but inevitable betrayal. Andy explains the power creep that we are seeing with this deck and how potent it can be. He also gets into how he planned for the deck to utilize its combos to ensure victory in a variety of ways, circumventing fog effects and pillow forts. Here's Cody's deck list: And here's Andy's deck list: We had a little change up for music this episode. We love the artist Home and you'll hear more from him in the future. This time, Dan Terminus kindly allowed us to use his dark beats. The song you heard this episode was Underwater Cities from the album The Darkest Benthic Division. Check out his music and support him! Find his work on (). Big shout out to Mikey Patch for all our art work! ().
