Opening hook / origin Chris, you've said that roadside coyote scene was the first thing you wrote, even before you knew the full story. What was it about that moment that felt like the right entry point into this world? 2. Tone and influences You're blending eco-horror and neo-noir in a really striking way here. What's each of your relationship to those genres—are there specific books or films that shaped how you approached them, or personal favorites that were on your mind while making this? 3. The prose chapter choice That opening prose chapter from Oilfield Graveyard: Tales of the Wildcatter Myth is such a bold structural swing. What does prose allow you to do that comics alone wouldn't, especially in setting up the mythology? 4. The Wildcatter as a presence The Wildcatter evolves from something almost abstract in issue #2 to something disturbingly human in issue #3. How did you approach revealing it piece by piece without losing the mystery? 5. Character and transformation The grandmother's descent is genuinely unsettling. How did you think about her transformation in relation to the oil itself, is it possession, corruption, or something more symbolic? 6. Visual storytelling and horror lineage Charlie, you spent years defining the visual language of long-form horror on The Walking Dead. When you approach a story like this, how does that experience inform your instincts—and where do you find yourself deliberately doing something different? 7. Pacing and silent storytelling Charlie, one thing that really stands out is how much space you're given for quiet, atmospheric sequences—scenes that breathe and flow without a lot of dialogue or overt plot movement. How do you approach pacing those moments visually so they still feel propulsive, and what do you think comics can do in those silent stretches that other mediums can't? 8. Fun / silly question: If the Wildcatter had a playlist, what's the one song that absolutely has to be on it?

In this episode, Father Wesley Walker and Dr. Junius Johnson are joined by Dante scholar Catherine Illingworth to navigate the harrowing depths of Dante's Inferno. The conversation centers on the profound medieval understanding of sin not merely as a broken rule, but as a fundamental distortion of love and human nature. The hosts and their guest explore how the damned souls, such as Francesca and Paolo in Canto V, consistently refuse to take responsibility for their actions, instead blaming external forces like romantic love for their eternal demise. This introduces the foundational concept that hell is a realm where souls have misordered their affections, elevating earthly desires above their love for God and ultimately choosing their own ruin. The discussion dives deeply into the mechanics of divine justice, specifically the concept of contrapasso, where the physical punishment seamlessly mirrors the internal reality of the sin. Through vivid examples like Capaneus, whose unyielding pride becomes his own internal and eternal torment , and Odysseus, whose final voyage represents the ultimate theological fraud of attempting to achieve salvation through human merit alone, the episode illustrates how sin deforms the human soul. The group also grapples with the modern reader's severe discomfort with eternal damnation, contrasting contemporary universalist tendencies with Dante's vision of a highly physical, meticulously structured afterlife where characters literally become the landscape of their own making.Junius has a video on courtly love that may be helpful to understand some of the conversation. Catherine Illingworth studied religion and literature at the Yale Divinity School before pursuing a PhD at UCLA in medieval literature with a specialized focus on Dante. She recently stepped away from the academic world after her young son, George, was diagnosed with a rare neurodegenerative genetic disease. In response to the immense financial barriers preventing children from accessing existing, life-saving gene therapies, she founded the Bradstreet Foundation to help families lacking a commercial pathway for treatment. You can learn more about her vital advocacy work at geneforgeorge.org, and follow her updates on TikTok and Instagram by searching for Catherine Illingworth.Endnotes:* Catherine: “The Waste Land” by T.S. Unearth the hidden gems of the beer world and claim your free case here: www.beer52.com/ANALYTICS West Ham United are currently three points from safety, but taking 10 points from the last 15 has fundamentally changed the feeling around the club. This week on The West Ham Breakdown, Jack and Cal map out the tactical path forward following the high-intensity, high-pressure, and at times highly frustrating, performances against Manchester United and Burnley. While it was gutting to drop points to a last-minute equaliser at the London Stadium, Jack and Cal discuss why the Hammers are starting to look more than good enough to survive and are currently putting ginormous pressure on the teams above us. They discuss West Ham's seeming inability to kill off games after being robbed of 2 points against Man Utd, why bringing on Callum Wilson in a winning gamestate might be the worst possible option and whether Jarrod Bowen could be the answer. They debate Adama Traoré's cameo appearances so far since joining from Fulham, how Leny Yoro changed the game in favour of Man United and where Freddie Potts and Soungoutou Magassa fit into West Ham's a midfield unit carrying Nuno to safety. I'm pulling back the curtain on my 2025 business insights... nosy bitches, this one's for you! I share the ultimate the plot twist: I made almost the exact same money as 2024, while taking a 3-month sabbatical, working essentially part-time, and living like an eccentric writer.I break down my Pitch Perfect launches (including a surprising feeling I had with my first $20K month), why I'm retiring from being "The Podcast Queen," and the creative possession that birthed SUPERNOVA — my new thinking lab for people who want to build intellectual frameworks that shape culture instead of learning more tactical skills. Plus: why I'm choosing restraint as my 2026 word, and why I'm actively exploring capped business models and circular economies instead of scaling into outer space.Themes from the episode:Making the same money while living exponentially better - I generated $143K (basically what I made in 2024), but took almost 3 months off, worked Tuesdays-Thursdays, and traveled to 10+ cities, which honestly feels more successful than any revenue goal ever could. From reactive hot takes to restrained discernment - I'm retiring the knee-jerk cultural commentary and choosing thoughtfulness over Threads wars, because not everything needs my opinion and frankly, discernment is sexy as hell. Why SUPERNOVA exists and why I refuse to be the podcast queen forever - The sabbatical revealed I don't want my legacy to be "she taught people to pitch/podcast," I want it to be "she taught people to build worlds," which required creating a 4-month thinking lab for intellectual frameworks that transcend your current business reputation.Ditching cold pitching for relational EVERYTHING - I stopped teaching extractive tactics and started focusing on nurturing your actual circle, which resulted in my most collaborative Pitch Perfect cohorts and proved that relationships always win over spray-and-pray strategies.Exploring capped income and circular economies because endless growth is a scam - I engaged in 8+ swaps/trades for high-ticket programs, I'm capping SUPERNOVA at 10 people, and I'm actively researching what it means to redistribute resources instead of building a team-run empire I don't even want.My 2026 themes: CREATE. PLAY. PHILOSOPHIZE. EXPLORE. UNEARTH. ASK BIG QUESTIONS. SIMMER. PONDER. WONDER. THINK.What are yours?!Connect with Chelsea:
