This episode was recorded at Planet Comicon in Kansas City, MO. I did a brief interview with comic book creator and author Onrie Kompan. He has created and written the "Yi Soon Shin" series. The Yi Soon Shin comics are amazing! He also owns a production company called "Onrie Kompan Productions, LLC". Check out his website www.yisoonshin.com and his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/Yi-Soon-Shin-Comic-Book-139636395551/about/.
This special mid-week bonus episode is an interview recorded in Challengers with Onrie Kompan and Dan Dougherty, creators of the new real life historical graphic novel MARX: A Tale of Neglect. It was recorded just before Christmas, so forgive a few Holiday well-wishes that are merely a week old. This graphic novel is the story of what Onrie’s grandfather went thru during World War II. Find out how it came about, how Dan got involved and what the whole book means to them both. And we talk about their other work in comics.
Onrie Kompan has defied the rules of the comic industry to be very successful on his own terms. Without the help of a publisher or mainstream comic distribution he is a one man army. Currently he has a documentary being made about his remarkable achievement of selling over 1500 comics at NYCC. Not bad for an American writing a historical comic about a Korean sea battle. His work is featured in Korean museums, he has been invited to do many speaking engagements and has been a consultant on a movie about the life of Yi Soon Shin. This is an uplifting episode about the power of believing in comics and the lessons of how to be a good neighbor at conventions and raise everyone up with you. You can find other great podcasts on the network as well as comic and entertainment news by jumping on twitter and following @taylornetwork
Gene Ha is one of the most thorough, detailed and good natured artists working in comics today. Known for his DC work such as "The Shade" and "Project: Superman" as well as Alan Moore's "Top Ten", it's time for him to step into his own creator owned fantasy. Which is exactly what he's doing with "Mae", a young adult, female driven story about friendship and sisterhood and strange creatures with Czech names. He and Wendi talk about this new project, how to run a successful kickstarter and the appeal of smart brunettes! Check out the kickstarter for Mae right here- https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/geneha/mae-graphic-novel Onrie Kompan is an international storyteller who has earned acclaim in Korea for his comic, Yi Soon Shin, detailing the daring exploits of a brave Korean Naval Commander. His gritty historical epic is perfect for those who like bloodshed and dark adventure. He and Wendi discuss the delicate balance of vulnerability in female characters and how to craft a successful sales pitch at conventions. Check out the kickstarter for Yi Soon Shin right here-

A comic about a “real-life super-hero” needs your help! This week, I talk with Onrie Kompan, the driving force behind the Yi Soon Shin trilogy of comics focusing on a hero who saved his people from an invading force by his own wits and skills in military strategy. Onrie’s close to ending up the second trilogy of books, these subtitled “Fallen Avenger.” Nearly 40,000 copies of this series have been sold, many of them by Onrie at comic-book conventions around the country. More Injustice! Just kidding. It’s our C2E2/Free Comic Book Day wrap-up, with guest stars galore! Lizzy Challenger, Ashly Challenger, Luke Smarto, Wendi Freeman, Onrie Kompan and Ryan Browne. But it’s pretty FCBD heavy, for sure.
Onrie Kompan joins Patrick this episode to tell all about the unbeatable warrior, Yi Soon Shin, to talk about digital devices, the Amazing Spider-Man and how an electronic community will never replace a physical, brick and mortar one. At least we HOPE so... Also, as an added bonus, there's background noise (at the beginning)! Yes! The sounds of a busy comic store on a Wednesday. You're welcome!
