Trevor Mueller is back on the Comic Crusaders Podcast, and this episode hits that sweet spot where imagination, education, and straight-up fun all collide. The Chicago-based comics writer has been building serious momentum with Papercutz through Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society: Horses and Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society: Music, two all-ages graphic novels that turn learning into full-on adventure. Trevor's no stranger to crafting engaging stories, with credits that include the multi-Harvey Award nominated Albert the Alien, and these new books show off another side of his game: teaching through excitement instead of talking down to kids. The Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society setup is already a winner. A crew of smart students teams up with their alien exchange-student friend Toot to explore the world, the universe, and everything in between. In Horses, Trevor and artist Gabriel Mayorga take readers through a wild journey that spans time, microscopic detail, and massive imagination to understand these incredible animals. In Music, Trevor teams with Christian Colbert for a volume that dives into sound waves, instruments, vocal cords, the ear, and even the brain. That's not just educational — that's sneaky-smart storytelling with swagger. What makes this conversation pop is that Trevor doesn't just talk about the books he gets into the why behind them. Why younger readers deserve stories that respect their intelligence. Why comics are such a beast of a medium for teaching complicated ideas visually. Why curiosity matters. And how you make something like horses or music feel cinematic instead of classroom-flat. There's also great insight into his collaborations, from Gabriel Mayorga's visual versatility on Horses to Christian Colbert helping transform music into something readers can practically hear with their eyes. This episode is for comic fans, parents, educators, creators, and anybody who loves seeing stories do more than one job at once. Trevor Mueller came through with heart, humor, and a real understanding of how to make books matter. Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society: Horses is out now, and Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society: Music is right around the corner. That means now is the perfect time to jump in, get curious, and see why Trevor keeps making noise in the world of all-ages storytelling. Read transcriptIn 1986, King Features looked at its stable of unrelated newspaper strip heroes and decided the responsible thing to do was throw them all in a blender. Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, and the Phantom. A spaceman, a stage hypnotist, and a guy who lives in a skull-shaped cave and inherited his job from his dad got drafted into a single Saturday morning cartoon called Defenders of the Earth on the apparent theory that if the Avengers could do a team-up, so could three guys who had never met before that year and shared nothing except a syndicate contract. Then, because nothing from the '80s was allowed to stay just a cartoon, Defenders of the Earth became a video game in 1990, courtesy of Enigma Variations, for the exact kind of home computer that made you type a magic incantation and wait: Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Amiga, and, for the three people on Earth who owned one, the SAM Coupé. You play Flash, sneaking through Ming's castle dodging security cameras, occasionally calling in Mandrake or the Phantom to open doors, because apparently that's what magic and jungle-honed strength were for in these days. Helping make sense of this glorious pile of licensed heroes is Ryan Estrada, who's written comics for Star Trek, Popeye, Garfield, and, fittingly, Flash Gordon itself, having contributed to Papercutz's newer Flash Gordon Adventures line. Ryan's also built a reputation for tucking real hidden puzzles and messages directly into his comic pages, in plain sight, daring anyone paying close enough attention to find them. Which feels like exactly the right skillset for an episode about a security system that apparently only a few specific comic strip disciplines can defeat. So track down a joystick you no longer own, adjust to a universe where Flash Gordon answers to a management structure that includes a professional hypnotist, and let's find out whether the Defenders of the Earth earned their game, or whether Earth would've been just fine handling Ming on its own. Learn such things as: Is it really a team game if you only get to play as one member? Why should you learn another language that uses a different alphabet? What are some of the special rules with making licenses comics? And so much more! You can find everything you could ever want to know about Ryan on RyanEstrada.com. Let's see if anyone can pick out my favorite part. I'll give you a hint, it's on the home page. The dynamic comics writing duo of Jeannine Acheson and Thomas Sniegoski return to the show to chat with Byron about their highly anticipated new middle-grade graphic novel project Nothing Can Stop The Ape from Papercutz. Tom reveals the original concept three decades in the making, a project which initially struggled to find its footing as an adult oriented book but with Jeannine's help eventually found its place in the middle-grade market embracing a nostalgic Hanna Barbera filter celebrating the cartoons we all grew up loving. Tom's website Jeannine's website From the publisher A raucous tale in the tradition of the classic saturday morning cartoons— Jonny Quest, The Herculoids, Space Ghost, and The Mighty Mightor— Nothing Can Stop...The Ape! This mini-series tells the story of Maxwell Morgan, a twelve-year-old boy who will go to any lengths to save his mom (who has been possessed by the spirit of Thuuna, an angry primordial goddess), even going as far as freeing the goddess's immortal enemy from his magical prison. With his faithful french bulldog and four primitive cave people gifted with the powers of the elements, Maxwell must convince the newly-released gorilla god of chaos, Ghraagg'endah, to help them save the world from Thuuna's genocidal intentions and free his mother from the goddess's clutches. Paying homage to the Hanna-Barbera animated shows of the late sixties, Nothing Can Stop. . . The Ape!  is a story for all ages. When mom and dad go to war, it's the children who suffer the most. Family tension bleeds into every aspect of their lives, and frequently, they have nowhere to hide or even space to process the external and internal strife. As a kid, we fled to stories. Whether it was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial or Mrs. Doubtfire, fiction helped us process the big emotions we witnessed flowing from our parents. This week on the podcast, we're talking with collaborators Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin about their new all-ages graphic novel, Penny and the Yeti. It's a comic designed to help kids navigate the world when the adult voices in their home get too darn loud. Currently, divorce rates in America fall between 40 and 50 percent. Whether a kid is personally affected by this rate or not, they'll certainly encounter divorce among friends. They will rely on stories like Penny and the Yeti to clarify this reality. And creating such stories bears an incredible responsibility. With Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin, we discuss Penny and the Yeti's origins, its ties to Gaspero's own daughter, and the joys of visualizing cryptids. Why a Yeti? If you know Jimmy and his work as a podcaster and journalist, you know the answer already. And we get into that specific aspect of his life as well. Penny and the Yeti is out now from Papercutz. It's written by Jimmy Gaspero, illustrated by Amber Akin, color flatted by Charlie Akin, and lettered by Buddy Beaudoin. You can continue this conversation by following Jimmy Gaspero on Instagram and BlueSky and Amber Akin on Instagram and BlueSky. We are flipping the script and doing something new today to celebrate our 450th episode as I welcome my co-host Jimmy Gaspero on for the very first time as a guest of the show to celebrate the release of his debut graphic novel project Penny and the Yeti from Papercutz.    I've known about some of the origin story of the project but not all of it that started as a simple bedtime conversation with his daughter, Penny, and somehow became a fully-fledged graphic novel with artist Amber Akin. We do a deep dive into that transition, the relatable real life parental struggles woven into the fabric of the story, and Jimmy shares some of his all-time favorites from cryptids to plays.  Jimmy on BlueSky Buy Penny and the Yeti From the publisher YETI OR NOT, HERE WE COME! Penny and Yeti are pretty typical best friends: they go to school together, play together, and have fun adventures. The twist? Yeti's a living breathing myth!  Before Yeti, Penny had a super normal life with her big sister Peri and their parents, Fenton and Maxine. Penny thinks life is pretty great, especially when Peri draws and colors with her—Peri draws the best monsters called “cryptids!” The only real problem is Penny's parents argue…a LOT. Penny wishes her parents would stop, but what can she do? That's when Yeti shows up, right out of one of Peri's drawings and smack into Penny's life! With Yeti's help, Penny comes up with a plan to get her parents to stop fighting. Penny, however, soon finds out that her parents may need more help than even a magical Yeti can provide… Follow Comic Book Yeti

Trevor Mueller is the writer of Nexus Point, Re-Possessed, the multi-Harvey Award nominated Albert the Alien, Bat Pat, and many more comics. It feels like this episode has been a long time coming as Jimmy welcomes Trevor onto the podcast for a wide-ranging discussion about making comics, writing all-ages comics including Bat Pat as well as the upcoming Papercutz series: Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society, growing with your audience, his convention experience, inspiring his kids to create their own comics and tell their own stories, and also the movie Alien Nation (1988). Like I said: wide-ranging. Trevor discusses working with Papercutz editor Adam Wallenta on the Secret S.T.E.A.M. Society books (the first is out in February) as well wanting to have a comic for everybody, which is where the definitely not for kids Demon City came from. Read transcriptHoly Gallic mayhem, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're trading our Roman shields for DualShock controllers as we dive headfirst into the digital disaster that is Asterix & Obelix Kick Buttix for PS2 and Xbox – because apparently someone at Étranges Libellules thought the best way to honor René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's beloved comic masterpiece was to trap our favorite mustachioed warriors in a 3D brawler with combat mechanics more repetitive than Obelix's “These Romans are crazy!” catchphrase. Released in 2003 as Asterix & Obelix XXL in Europe before getting the wonderfully ridiculous “Kick Buttix” rebrand for American audiences, this licensed adventure promised players the chance to experience authentic Gallic village life while punching approximately 70 Romans per level across 40 different stages of cartoon chaos. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so mindlessly button-mashy that even Caesar would file a complaint with customer service about the repetitive gameplay loop. Joining us for this Roman-bashing bonanza is the incomparable Chas! Pangburn – a man who when he's not busy lettering the actual Asterix comics from the depths of his creative dungeon, brings his insider knowledge of what makes these characters tick both on the page and in polygonal form. His expertise in both the source material and the art of comic creation makes him the perfect guide through this particular journey from panel to PlayStation. So grab your magic potion and prepare for an episode that's more entertaining than actually grinding through the same three enemy types for hours on end – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar at Vercingétorix levels. Will this portable Gallic adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm and cartoon physics, or will it crash harder than a Roman chariot race gone wrong? Tune in to discover if this comic adaptation belongs in the Hall of Fame… or should be buried deeper than one of those references that you'll only catch if you read this in French! Learn such things as: Can a video game really handle the comedic timing that makes Asterix comics so brilliant? How do you translate cartoon physics into actual game mechanics without breaking the universe? Do magic potions even come with flavor options? And so much more! Happy New Year, Listeners with Attitude! We're kicking off Power Trip 2: Taisaku Sentai Podranger (aka season two) with some comic coverage—but not BOOM! Studios! No, it's Going Green, the last Ranger comic produced before BOOM! acquired the license, and it's…wacky, to say the least. If you heard our episode on The Monster Island Film Vault about “Green with Evil,” then you know this comic is a prequel to that miniseries. It explains how Rita acquired the Green Power Coin—while fighting vegetable people—and chose Tommy as its bearer—after trying to seduce him! Seriously, we're not sure if this is supposed to be a canonical parody or the creators misremembering how goofy the show was at points. Hello, kaiju lovers! In our first Patreon-sponsored episode of season three, Nate is joined by his co-host from The Power Trip podcast and frequent guest, Michael Hamilton, for some TV talk. (Although, first they have to resolve longstanding issues from the…“Yeti incident”). In this case, the epic five-part miniseries from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, “Green with Evil.” This introduced toku-loving kids to Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank), the femme fatale Scorpina, and the iconic Dragonzord. But in true MIFV fashion, Nate and Michael have a deeper-than-you-would-expect thematic discussion about this miniseries and how it shows the corruptive nature of evil—and it includes quotations from J.R.R. Tolkien and St. Augustine! Yes, that's the kind of podcast we are. Strap in, folks! It's morphin' time! Beforehand, Nate receives some voicemails from both Karone and Raymund, with the former giving an update on how she's coping with life after freeing herself from the Board's influence, and the latter making excuses for not finding his Gorenger costume. Also, a drunk WHG3 calls into the show to speak with Michael. This episode's prologue, “Letters from Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars: Celeste Mora as Karone Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin Michael Hamilton as William H. George III Additional music: “Go, Go, Power Rangers” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ.
