Time 4 Change is a city-wide partnership of churches pursuing racial reconciliation in the Church. For Time4Change Sunday, Owen Hylton of Beacon Church Brixton came to help us on our journey towards being a truly reconciled church.
Guest speaker Owen Hylton continues our series looking at the book of James.
On Wednesday 15th July 2020 we had the privilege of hearing from two excellent speakers Angela Kemm & Owen Hylton on the subject of 'The Reconciled Church - The Battle to work out one new humanity in Christ"'. Owen Hylton - Owen serves as the full-time pastor of Beacon church and is part of the Newday management team. He is married to Pauline and they have three daughters. Before leading Beacon, Owen was on the full time staff team of Kings Church in Catford. Owen also spent 14 years working in the civil service and is author of the book ‘Crossing the Divide – a call to embrace diversity. Owen firmly believes that: "The battle for our generation is not multisite churches, large numbers being gathered and excellent (professional) meetings that look diverse. Come on, God’s purpose is way bigger and better than that! The scary truth is you can build all those things, without any help from God! The previous generation battled for a new expression of church life (the charismatic) and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. In God’s economy, that is the perfect foundation for building truly diverse churches that have gone some way to deal with issues of racial injustice and inequality; the impact of which is far greater than we might imagine." Angela Kemm - Angela grew up in South Africa and pioneered mission work into townships in Cape Town, she saw amazing things happen! She worked for years in solidarity with a squatter community in KTC (a high density informal settlement in Gugulethu). Together their effort eventually won the Tambo Square community land in and houses in what is now Tambo Village. Angela is now based in Cambridge, UK and travels serving churches in various ways. She is particularly gifted in the Prophetic - bringing fresh vision and helping others to do the same. She also loves seeing God move in people’s lives bringing freedom and breaking strongholds. She is passionate about serving the poor and seeing people lifted out of poverty! You can access the books recommended in this video by visiting: www.christcentralchurches.org/books The Reconciled Church was organised by churches in the North West region of ChristCentral on behalf of the ChristCentral Team. ChristCentral is a family of churches served by an apostolic team led by Jeremy Simpkins. This team works with over 275 churches in more than 25 nations and is part of the wider Newfrontiers family. We carry the prophetic call that ‘we can do more together than apart’ and are now serving many churches & church plants in various parts of the world. 'JYKL + HYD' is a song that sheds light on a part of youth culture. A part of youth culture that affects our community and which is permeating into wider society. Owen Hylton picks out the elements of truth spoken by Dave but also explains that God is, and can do, much more than Dave understands.
'I'm only human after all' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3wKzyIN1yk is an honest song about the human condition: an acknowledgement of a mixture of failure and fear and of deflecting blame. Owen Hylton observes that our culture puts the human at the centre and ends up in the grip of human failings. If we put God at the centre, we gain His love and comfort. This is expressed in the song 'Living Hope' by Phil Wickham.
Owen Hylton speaks on one of our foundational truths: creating and keeping a culture of grace. He reflects on God's acceptance of us through the death of Jesus; and how our acceptance by God allows us to grow in grace and to bring its fruit into our lives (in humility, freedom, devotion and service); and how the fruit of grace will also be reflected in how we extend grace to others.

Owen Hylton interviews Jeremy and Laura Webb who tell how God met with them and changed them in their ministry in South Africa. They tell of how their struggles led them to a deeper and richer understanding of their walk with God and how essential it was to have worship at the heart of all they did and to allow the prophetic to operate. Owen opens by reflecting on the death of Nelson Mandela and wonders if all that he represents in the eyes of the world, the pinnacle of humanity, is really the point.
