Paul Hynes, Trent Catanzariti, and Ben Hamilton head a stunning line up reviewing last week's games. We have a trip to Greenwich to contend with, and a belting from a team that contains friends of one of our former league skippers Freddie Mills. But did even turn up this season? On this episode, I had Paul Hynes back on the podcast to discuss what might be seen as the dichotomy of following a structured program and moving intuitively. We talked about what we both value about these concepts, and how they can, in fact, go hand in hand. Towards the end of the episode we also talked about empowering clients and what it really means to be a coach and educator. Paul Hynes is an experienced strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer in Toronto, ON. He trains individuals of all ages and levels. Paul is also a competitive powerlifter. In episode 002, I am interviewing Coach Paul Hynes from Hynes Performance. Paul is a former art school nerd. When he first entered the weight room, he was a skinny guy who was looking to build some muscle. Now, he works as a Strength and Conditioning coach with clients from all walks of life. Paul believes that training should be an enjoyable, yet challenging process, and is all about meeting people at their starting point and moving forward from there. When I started training with Paul, I had a shoulder injury that made it painful to lift my arms over my head. I couldn’t take my own sports bra off without pain. Oh, and I was twelve weeks pregnant. Today, we talk about how training does not have to look any ONE way, how best results are often found when a coach meets their clients where they are at, and exercising through injury. You can find out more about Paul Hynes here:Website: www.hynesperformance.caInstagram: @hynesperformance @paul.hynesFacebook: Paul Hynes
Paul Hynes is a Toronto-based trainer who started strength training during his college years as an art student, where he walked into the gym as a skinny guy looking to “get jacked.” He lifted some weights, made some mistakes and saw some results which encouraged him to keep going. That early experience in the gym instilled a drive that helped Paul discover his true calling: Coaching. Paul loves coaching! This profession has allowed him to work with people from all walks of life with a variety of goals. Whether people are training for looks, injury prevention, strength or just life improvement, Paul’s goal is to help them achieve their goals in a safe and sustainable way. In this episode, Paul and I discuss: * Paul’s start in fitness & why he loves coaching * How art skills apply to fitness * How biases and assumptions affect coaching * Client-centered coaching * What to look for in a trainer * Training for the long game * Adaptability in a training program * Developing awareness * Internal vs. external cues * Considerations for exercise selection * Backing off 10% * How to train with injuries * The mental aspects of pain * Language & beliefs surrounding pain * Paul’s experience in powerlifting * Why there’s no such thing as a “good” or “bad” exercise Learn more about Paul and Hynes Performance: hynesperformance.ca Find Paul on Instagram: @paul.hynes Find more resources on pain: greglehman.ca/blog
