LGBTQ+ seniors in Indianapolis are at the center of a new effort to ensure they're not left behind. The Elder Pride Indy Collaborative just released results from a key community survey. The survey, led by the Damien Center, is part of a larger plan to close gaps for the LGBTQ+ older adults. Now that the responses are in, organizers say it's time to act.The needs assessment also revealed concerns such as the lack of LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare, mental health support, fears of discrimination in long-term housing, and difficulties connecting with local resources. Many people said they wanted a dedicated community center. The organization is considering forming an advocacy network that includes representatives from various local groups to address ongoing needs. They're also planning to create an information hub to help people stay informed and connected.Another public survey will likely be conducted next year.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A FACT CHECK at the White House website proclaims “President Trump will always a protect Social Security and Medicare.” It goes on to quote Elon Musk saying “The waste and fraud in entitlement spending — which is most of the federal spending is entitlements — so, that's, like, the big one to eliminate. That's the, sort of half-trillion, maybe $6-700 billion a year.” After a list of “facts” about fraud, improper payments to deceased individuals and improper payments to both SSA and Medicare and Medicaid services, the page goes on to ask “What kind of a person doesn't support eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending that ultimately costs taxpayers more?”Link to the Whitehouse web site:https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/03/fact-check-president-trump-will-always-protect-social-security-medicare/Am I missing something? First, Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements, they are services for which older Americans have paid for by deductions from THEIR salaries. And , second, where is, in this so-called Fact Sheet, plans for how President Trump is going to preserve Social Security and Medicare except for a statement that reads “The Trump Administration will not cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. President Trump himself has said it (over and over and over again).”Conversely, President's Trump's budget seeks to reduce or eliminate the Older Americans Act, to dissolve the Administration for Community Living, and cut funding to critical services that help older adults to live independently. In order to be able to understand more completely what's going on, we called on Nathan Boucher, to explain the effect of Trump's real budget proposals on senior care. Nathan is Associate Research Professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy and Duke University faculty at Sanford School of Public Policy, the Medical School, and the Nursing School. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Duke Center for the Study of Aging & Human Development as well as Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy Core Faculty. Nathan and I talked about the Older Americans Act and the Administration for Community Living which provide services like Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Care, Falls and Elder Abuse Prevention and Respite care as well as services for younger people with disabilities. We discussed that despite reassurances that Medicare and Medicaid will not be touched, plans are in the works for reducing Medicaid and adding a work requirement and more difficult paperwork which would affect at least 7.6 million people.

The healthcare system is complex and challenging to navigate, especially for seniors and their caregivers, but preparation and knowledge can help you maintain control, advocate effectively, and achieve better outcomes during healthcare transitions.KISMETWhile most assume senior care facilities and nursing homes operate based on modern nutritional science, many still follow outdated dietary guidelines based on the food pyramid, which may negatively impact metabolic health when seniors need more protein and healthy fats for optimal recovery and function.EPISODE SUMMARYIn this episode, master's prepared nurse Cheryl Field shares insights from her 36 years of experience in senior care. She discusses how understanding the healthcare system can help aging adults maintain control during transitions like emergency room visits and hospital stays. Field explains the critical differences between traditional Medicare and managed care options that seniors must navigate when turning 65. She offers practical advice on preparing for healthcare events, including what to bring to the emergency room and how to approach rehabilitation stays positively. Field emphasizes the importance of advance directives, creating a supportive home environment, and embracing a mindset that accepts assistance when needed. The conversation also explores how improved nutrition and metabolic health can benefit both seniors and their caregivers, potentially reducing medication dependence and improving quality of life.NOTABLE QUOTE"A hundred percent of us will experience a sudden change in health. As life expectancy increases, so do the financial challenges of retirement. In this insightful episode of the Senior Matters Podcast, host and estate planning attorney Mark E. Wight sits down with fiduciary advisor Scott Summerlin of Starlifter Wealth Management to unpack the new financial realities facing today's retirees. The conversation begins with a striking shift in retirement demographics—retirees in the 1970s lived to about 71. Today, a healthy 65-year-old woman can expect to live to 85 or longer. That's 20+ years of retirement, and without the right planning, inflation and taxes can steadily erode retirement savings. Scott explores how healthcare and long-term care costs are among the biggest threats to retirement. While Medicare covers many health needs, long-term care requires separate planning. Scott urges listeners to plan at least 10 years in advance due to Medicaid and Medicare look-back periods, especially since healthier individuals have more options in their 60s. The conversation also addresses how the financial industry has evolved, with long-term care insurance shifting from expensive, use-it-or-lose-it policies to hybrid options embedded in annuities or life insurance. These changes offer more value and flexibility to today's retirees. Scott then tackles market volatility, explaining how a once-manageable 5% withdrawal rate can spike to 8% in a downturn, leading to rapid portfolio depletion. With examples like a $1M nest egg dropping to $600K, Scott illustrates how volatility can directly affect lifestyle—and why retirees need certainty-focused investments such as bonds and annuities. Listeners will also learn how mainstream financial news often misleads by focusing solely on the stock market. Scott recommends a more balanced strategy that includes fixed-income products and a long-term outlook. Finally, Scott offers guidance on finding the right financial advisor, suggesting listeners lean on trusted professionals like estate attorneys and CPAs, and always verify credentials through FINRA's Broker Check.
All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome the founders of Activity Connection as our guests. Today, Activity Connection supports thousands of activity directors and eldercare staff with a comprehensive library of digital tools, including monthly calendars, cognitive fitness resources, multicultural content, sensory stimulation programs and customizable printables. The platform continues to innovate while staying true to the Ewalds' founding mission: to empower caregivers and bring joy, dignity and connection to the lives of older adults. About Nancy Ewald: Nancy Ewald holds a Bachelor of Science in medical technology and a Master of Science in allied health education. Her early “activities” involved teaching microbiology and working with test tubes, pipettes and Bunsen burners. However, while taking time off to raise three children and care for two ailing seniors, Nancy discovered her true passion and made a midlife career change. She returned to the workforce as an assistant activity director for a full-service senior community. Her innovative programming quickly gained recognition, leading her to author six manuals for national providers and eventually serve as a national director overseeing training and program development for 170 communities across all levels of care. Motivated to solve the everyday challenges she had seen firsthand, Nancy left the corporate world and devoted herself to expanding Activity Connection into the robust platform it is today. She now lives in Winter Garden, Florida, where she enjoys spending time in her garden—her personal escape and creative inspiration. About Doug Ewald: Doug Ewald, a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in studio arts and art history, spent nearly a decade in retail business management within the popular media arts industry. A lifelong enthusiast of computers and digital media, Doug recognized early on the internet's potential to transform how information and resources could be accessed and shared. In 1999, he built the first iteration of the Activity Connection website. Since then, Doug has served as CEO, leading the company's growth into a trusted, widely used digital platform that now benefits more than 1.5 million seniors each month. He lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and two children. About Bob Ewald: Bob Ewald joined Activity Connection part-time in 2003. After retiring a few years later from the corporate world, he stepped into the role of full-time chief financial officer. A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in accounting (Bob, Doug and Nancy are all proud Hoosier alumni), Bob worked as a certified public accountant in the insurance industry for 36 years. He welcomed the shift from large corporations to small business life, knowing his work was making a direct difference. Bob is an avid history buff and enjoys chasing his grandchildren around the playground. About Activity Connection: Activity Connection is a trusted leader in life enrichment programming, serving nearly 20,000 senior living communities. Each month, the platform delivers over 400 original, high-quality resources across nearly 40 categories—including themed activities, crafts, games, trivia, reminiscence programs, Montessori-based engagement, lifelong learning, virtual travel experiences, holiday celebrations, and more. In this essential episode of the Senior Matters Podcast, host Mark E. Wight is joined by fiduciary financial advisor Scott Summerlin from Starlifter Wealth Management for a discussion about retirement planning, investment strategy, and the evolving needs of seniors. Scott brings over two decades of experience and holds both Series 7 and Series 66 licenses, giving him the expertise to offer personalized, relationship-based financial advice—free from commission-driven product sales. This episode opens with a clear explanation of what it means to be a fiduciary and why those standards matters so much, especially for retirees who are relying on fixed income, drawing down assets, and navigating unpredictable markets. Scott explains how the financial industry has shifted away from transactional sales to focus on long-term relationships and trust, and how that benefits clients over time. Listeners will gain valuable insight into the differences between pre-retirement and post-retirement financial strategies. Unlike younger investors who have decades to rebound from market dips, retirees must manage monthly withdrawals while preserving long-term value. Scott breaks down how market volatility impacts older investors and why timing and recovery windows matter more in retirement. The conversation also highlights the risks of DIY investing for seniors. From following outdated advice to misjudging market trends, Scott discusses why self-managing finances can be dangerous without a full understanding of evolving products, tax implications, and age-specific needs. He also notes how communication preferences shift with age, with many retirees needing more frequent and supportive interactions than younger clients. Scott and Mark discuss common investor behavior pitfalls, especially the urge to sell during downturns. Scott emphasizes the importance of staying invested and explains how professional investors outperform retail investors by about 3% annually, not through secret formulas, but through disciplined, long-term strategy and avoiding emotional decision-making. As inflation and taxes continue to affect retirees' purchasing power, Scott explores how conservative investments can actually lose money in real terms. He explains how Treasury bonds and diversified stock portfolios can help offset inflation if used strategically, while also balancing risk. This episode is a must-listen for retirees, pre-retirees, and anyone supporting aging family members. Whether you're worried about inflation, market fluctuations, or making your savings last, Scott Summerlin offers practical, expert guidance to help you make sound financial decisions in retirement.

One Senior Care, based in Erie, PA, serves seniors in Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky and soon-to-be northeastern Ohio. Because its population base is rural, one of the unique services One Senior Care provides is driving to seniors' homes and transporting them to PACE services, Chief Operating Officer Craig Worland said. One Senior Care's promise is to do what it can to let seniors stay in their homes and communities. PACE is a bipartisan issue, Worland believes. Republicans and Democrats as well as bureaucrats have a favorable view of PACE. With the restructuring of the Department of Health and Human Services, oversight of PACE likely will move to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). Worland is not so concerned about where PACE is housed, but he wants the government to be aware that PACE is “not an experiment.” Barriers — particularly enrollment ones — need to be removed to grow the program, he said. PACE organizations, as opposed to states, should control eligibility to cut down on red tape and facilitate easier enrollment into the program, he said. He'd like to see every state offer PACE in coming years.Follow us on social media:X: @McKHomeCareFacebook: McKnight's Home CareLinkedIn: McKnight's Home CareInstagram: mcknights_homecareFollow One Senior Care on social media:LinkedIn: One Senior CareShow contributors:McKnight's Home Care Editor Liza Berger; Craig Worland, Chief Operating Officer, One Senior Care
