June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the financial exploitation and other forms of abuse that disproportionately affect older adults. Elder abuse can take many forms. It could be physical, emotional, or financial, and it could be due to neglect or due to exploitation. Often, elder abuse goes unreported due to fear, shame, or isolation.  Did you know?  Financial exploitation is the most common form of elder abuse—and it often goes unnoticed until significant damage is done. Scams, fraud, and even manipulation by trusted individuals can leave lifelong financial and emotional impacts.  How you can help:  Learn the warning signs of financial abuse  Financial abuse doesn't always look obvious—and that's what makes it so dangerous. It can start subtly: a sudden spike in withdrawals or transfers, unfamiliar charges, or changes in spending patterns that just don't seem to add up. You might notice unpaid bills piling up—even though your loved one has more than enough money to cover them. Other warning signs include new names appearing on accounts, unexpected changes to wills or power of attorney, or unfamiliar individuals accompanying your loved one to financial appointments and speaking on their behalf.  Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it's worth taking a closer look. Staying informed about these red flags is one of the most powerful ways to step in early and help protect someone you care about.   Learn more about common ways older adults may be at risk and get access to helpful resources from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at consumerfinance.gov or use the link in the show notes.  Check in regularly with older family members  Consistent, meaningful connection is one of the strongest defenses against financial exploitation. Social isolation can make older adults more vulnerable—not just to scams, but to manipulation by people they trust. That's why regular check-ins matter so much.  These don't have to be formal conversations about money. A simple phone call, a coffee visit, or asking how things are going can open the door for your loved one to share concerns. Over time, these check-ins build trust and create a safe environment where they feel comfortable speaking up if something doesn't seem right. It's not just about vigilance—it's about showing care, maintaining dignity, and helping them feel supported every step of the way.  Report suspicious financial activity  If you notice something unusual—whether it's account activity that doesn't make sense or changes in behavior that raise concern—don't wait. Acting quickly can prevent further loss and protect your loved one from deeper harm.  Start by contacting your financial institution to flag the activity—they can often help monitor accounts, stop transactions, or add safeguards. You can also reach out to your local Adult Protective Services, who are trained to investigate and intervene in cases of suspected abuse.  Speaking up might feel uncomfortable, but it can make a critical difference. Reporting concerns is not about causing trouble—it's about protecting someone's well-being and ensuring they have the support they need.  Together, we can help protect the financial independence and dignity of older adults in our community. To learn more about how to recognize, help prevent, and respond to elder mistreatment, visit the National Center on Elder Abuse at elderjustice.usc.edu or check the link in the show notes.  Need help or have concerns?

In this episode of Scam Rangers, host Ayelet Biger-Levin sits down with Charles E. Wallace Jr., author of The Caregiver's Game: The Caregiver's Game: Unraveling Financial Deceit in the Shadows of Dementia. Charles turned into a fraud investigator after his mother fell victim to financial elder abuse. Together, they pull back the curtain on the subtle, malicious ecosystem of caregiver grooming, which drained hundreds of thousands of dollars right under the noses of family members and financial fiduciaries.Charles discusses the "paradox of modern banking", how digital transaction networks fail to capture age-based vulnerabilities or notice when an elderly person's life savings are systematically bled dry through discount retail stores and unauthorized credit accounts. From the devastating isolation tactics used to separate his mother from her family to discovering a trail of prior victims left by the very predator hired to protect her, Charles explains why the financial industry must shift away from administrative silos and move toward behavioral, real-time transaction monitoring. We also explore the gaps in standard Adult Protective Services investigations and why Charles believes banks need to give families better collaborative dashboard tools to monitor and protect generational wealth before it's too late.A link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Caregivers-Game-Unraveling-Financial-Dementia/dp/B0G322349CAbout the HostAyelet Biger-Levin is the Founder and CEO of RangersAI and the host of Scam Rangers, a podcast exploring the human side of scams and the people working to protect consumers from financial and emotional harm.Through her work at RangersAI and her leadership within the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, Ayelet partners with financial institutions, policymakers, and advocates to elevate scam prevention beyond controls and technology toward trust-based, customer-centric protection.Be sure to follow her on LinkedIn and reach out to learn about her additional activities in this space:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ayelet-biger-levin/RangersAI: https://www.rangersai.com/

Send us a textThe most dangerous scam isn't the one you've never heard of, it's the one that feels urgent, secret, and strangely personal.  Take It To The Board host Donna DiMaggio Berger sits down with Paul Greenwood, who led San Diego's elder abuse prosecution unit for 22 years, to unpack how fraudsters weaponize emotion, AI, and routine technology to separate people from their savings. From “Granny, I'm in jail” calls to deepfake audio, from bogus jury-duty warrants to polished romance profiles, they trace the tactics that work across ages and communities—and show you how to avoid disaster. Together, Donna and Paul explain why the core script rarely changes: act now, tell no one, pay in untraceable ways. He shares the S.C.A.M. method—Stop, Check, Ask, Mention—as a simple, repeatable defense that anyone can use before clicking a link or transferring funds.  They dig into voice cloning, video generation, and how call centers in repurposed casinos run large-scale romance-investment schemes. You'll hear why isolation is a critical red flag, how caregivers and even professionals can exploit access, and how a short letter to your parent's bank can trigger real oversight. They also describe the first-hour playbook if you've been hit: contact your bank, file a police report, and submit to ic3.gov while reaching out to merchants or crypto kiosks to freeze wallets fast. For condo and HOA leaders, this conversation doubles as a toolkit for community safety: host fraud-prevention workshops, use clear language in newsletters, and create a simple reporting pathway that protects privacy while mobilizing help. Paul's courtroom stories reveal the true cost of fraud—lost homes, shattered health, and lingering shame—and why judges, banks, and families must treat it with the seriousness it deserves. You'll leave with practical steps, tested scripts, and resources to share with parents, neighbors, and boards. Conversation Highlights:A breakdown of the most common scams targeting consumers todayThe three red flags every listener should memorize before answering a call, opening an email, or clicking a linkHow victims can move past shame and take action—reporting scams and starting the recovery processWhich scams are surging right now (romance, tech support, government impostors, investment and crypto) and what makes each one so convincingThe one bank or retailer safeguard that could prevent a significant portion of scam losses if implemented tomorrowDebunking the myth that only older generations fall victim to scams—and how Millennials and Gen Z are targeted differentlyHow HOAs and condo associations can play a meaningful role in fraud prevention, from newsletters and lobby screens to manager trainingRed flags that expose illegitimate door-to-door contractors after storms—and what associations should communicate to residents right awayA one-minute checklist listeners can use to protect themselves and their families, covering phones, email, banking, passwords, and credit freezesThe single scam line everyone should hang up on immediatelyRelated Links:Resource: Common Frauds and ScamsArticle: Government Issues Scam Alert for Corporate Transparency ActResource: What are some common types of scams?

What unfolded was a gritty slog of a game for Seattle, as they fell behind by 10 points in the first half and struggled mightily to move the ball against a stout Colts defense. But the Seahawks chipped away in the second half, relying on the leg of Jason Myers, who delivered a historic franchise-record SIX field goals – including clutch kicks from 47, 52, 46, 32, 30, and the game-winner from 56 yards out with just 18 seconds left. Myers was the undisputed hero, scoring every single Seattle point in a touchdown-less thriller! Seattle improves to 11-3, surviving a nail-biter and keeping pace in the NFC West. He helps clients navigate conservatorships, financial elder abuse, and complex estate litigation. In this episode, Matt discusses the emotional weight of handling kidnapping cases across state lines, the challenge of proving financial abuse when the victim can no longer speak for themselves, and how the Britney Spears case fundamentally changed California conservatorship law. He candidly shares how repeated exposure to family disasters has made him both emotionally hardened to client trauma and deeply committed to preserving his own family relationships. Matt reflects on the importance of getting evidence upfront, managing clients who want to "go nuclear" on family relationships, and why sometimes the best thing for a client isn't indulging their emotions. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome back the team behind the film "No Country for Old People"   About "No Country for Old People":   A filmmaker chronicles her mother's last 6 months in a 5-star nursing home exposing what is a national systemic, deadly, profit-over-people business model. No Country For Old People; a Nursing Home Exposé is a scorching documentary posed to set the long-term care industry, policy makers, and the country ablaze. Shining a much-needed light on what is truly a national human emergency.   No Country for Old People; a Nursing Home Exposé is a 3-part documentary that exposes the dark realities of neglect and abuse in nursing homes and throughout U.S. long-term care industry.   The film answers four questions: What happens. 2. How does it happen? 3. Why does it happen? 4. And how do we fix it?   The film highlights a systemic crisis - the result of corporate greed - that has been taking a devastating human toll within the walls of our nation's long-term care facilities for decades.   The film weaves personal loss with journalistic rigor, exposing a pattern of abuse that is enabled by profit-first models that include chronic understaffing, undertraining, and financial exploitation.   PERSONAL STORIES AND EMOTIONAL IMPACT:   The filmmaker's own experience with her mother along with other emotional testimonies emphasize the human cost of systemic failure and illustrate the severe consequences of poor nursing home care.   The film is both deeply personal and widely resonant — amplifying voices too often silenced and inviting viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about aging, policy, and accountability in America.   About Susie Singer Carter:   Susie Singer Carter is a multi-award-winning, Oscar qualified filmmaker, writer, director, producer, actor, podcast producer, host, and Caregiver Advocate. She is best known for writing, directing, and producing the 2018 Oscar qualified short film, My Mom and The Girl starring Valerie Harper in her final performance, writing and producing “Bratz the Movie” for Lionsgate, and co-producing “Soul Surfer” for Sony.   Susie also produces and hosts the podcast Love Conquers Alz – awarded BEST PODCAST 2020 by New Media Film Festival and is #4 on Feedspots' 2022 25 Best Alzheimer's Podcasts list. Susie is also the co-creator, co-writer, co-star, and director of the outrageous horror/comedy narrative podcast I Love Lucifer, nominated Best Audio Fiction 2023 by Indie Series Awards.   Susie wrote the screenplay, “RUN”, based on the book “Plain Jane” and is attached to direct in spring 2024. She is currently writing, producing, and directing a docuseries, No Country For Old People, which centers on the Nursing Home Neglect and the systemic healthcare crisis responsible for it. She is also a host of the Writers Guild of America West's 3rd & Fairfax Podcast.   About Rick Mountcastle:   Mr. Mountcastle is the former United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia (2017-2018) and is a retired award-winning federal and state prosecutor. He led the prosecution of Purdue Pharma for fraudulently marketing OxyContin, as portrayed in the Emmy-nominated limited miniseries "Dopesick" (streaming on Hulu).   He also led the criminal and civil prosecution of Abbott Laboratories for fraudulently marketing the anti-epileptic, Depakote, for use as a chemical restraint for dementia patients in nursing homes, resulting in Abbott's guilty plea to a felony and payment of $1.5 billion, at the time the largest penalty against a pharmaceutical company for misconduct related to a single drug.   Mr. Mountcastle spent his career prosecuting healthcare companies and executives who exploited vulnerable patients for profit, and brings his passion to change a system that allows such exploitation to this project.   About Don Priess:   For over two decades, Don Priess has shunned sleep in order to become a highly sought-after, award winning writer, producer, director and editor. He co-founded Modern Media, now one of the top marketing and infomercial production companies in the world.   After six years and hundreds of TV and radio commercials, Don decided to spread his wings and since his credits include projects for CBS/Dic Entertainment, Nickelodeon, Buena Vista, American Movie Classics, Lifetime, Hanna-Barbera, Playboy Entertainment and more.   While continuing to work on a wide variety of entertainment projects, Don teamed with the highly energetic and talented Susie Singer Carter as part of Go Girl Media. Together they were the writers and Co-Executive Producers of two series for CBS, “CAKE” and “DANCE REVOLUTION”, SURVIVING HAWKING, and “SILVER LININGS” for Fox Television Studios.
