Welcome to the 20th episode of the Alts Pulse, a collaboration between iCapital x Alt Goes Mainstream. In the latest episode of the Alts Pulse, we were live from iCapital Connect. iCapital Managing Director, Head of Private Asset Research & Model Portfolios, Kunal Shah, and I had a conversation about how to marry an institutional allocator's mindset with the nuances of serving wealth clients.Kunal brings an institutional allocator's mindset to the wealth channel. At iCapital, he's focused on the identification, selection, and due diligence of private equity funds offered on the Flagship Platform. Prior to iCapital, Kunal was a Principal in the private markets group at Meketa Investment Group, a leading global investment consultant serving pension funds, endowments and foundations, and family offices. In that role, Kunal was responsible for leading and managing private equity fund investments. He joined Meketa in 2006 and invested globally, covering buyouts, venture capital, private debt, natural resources, and infrastructure investments. He also developed and led Meketa's secondary funds purchase practice. Kunal has also served on various LP advisory boards. Prior to Meketa, Kunal was an analyst at The Vanguard Group. Kunal and I finally turned all those hallway conversations we had at iCapital's old office of 441 Lexington into a podcast! We had a fascinating discussion about how to evaluate alternative asset managers and what makes a great manager. We covered:How should wealth managers approach private markets? Why it's important to “always be committed” rather than try to time vintages. Are evergreen structures a “game changer” for the wealth channel and a foundational piece for model portfolios? What features does a GP need to run an evergreen fund structure? What does the centralization of the CIO function and OCIO consolidation in the wealth channel mean for GPs?Thanks, Kunal, for sharing your passion, wisdom, and expertise at the intersection of private markets and private wealth, and for a great conversation that tied together how private markets and private wealth are changing as new product structures and product innovation take shape.

Sean Standerwick opens up about building a wealth management business from £20 million to over £260 million, and the lessons learned along the way about money, discipline, and long-term thinking. What started as a traditional, hands-off advisory firm evolved into a modern, high-touch service built around ongoing relationships, smarter investing, and helping clients actually understand how to build real wealth. At its core, it's not just about numbers - it's about financial peace of mind, structure, and making better decisions early. But behind the growth is a much bigger conversation around the realities of money in the UK today. From rising taxes and shrinking allowances to the pressure on business owners and high earners, Sean breaks down how the landscape has shifted - and why so many people are unknowingly leaving money on the table. Simple habits like using ISAs, pensions, and tax-efficient strategies become the difference between stagnation and serious long-term wealth.Alongside this is a deeply personal journey - navigating a complex family management buyout, balancing business with life, and dealing with the emotional weight of taking over something built by a parent. What followed was a year and a half of intense negotiation, pressure, and growth - ultimately reshaping not just the business, but relationships and perspective. Now, Sean focuses on helping entrepreneurs and founders build wealth the right way - starting early, thinking long-term, and avoiding the common mistakes that cost people years. It's a grounded look at money, business, and the habits that quietly separate those who build lasting wealth from those who don't.This is the eventful life of Sean Standerwick. In times of uncertainty, we need reminders of what truly matters. Today's episode is a profound lesson in hope, love, and perspective—one that gently calls us back to presence, connection, and grace. This is a re-release of my conversation with Bill Valentine, who passed away peacefully at home on October 21, 2022. I felt deeply called to bring this episode forward again. It's exactly what we need right now. This conversation isn't about fear or loss—it's about living without regret, being fully present because life is fleeting, and holding hope for the future. Many people say the most precious gift we can give is our time. Bill understood this in a way few ever do. When we recorded this episode, he was living with stage four terminal pancreatic cancer, and he chose to spend some of his remaining time with us.Bill was the only guest I've ever interviewed without doing extensive research beforehand. I wanted to meet him heart to heart. As it turns out, that choice mirrored one of his greatest realizations: who we truly are has nothing to do with what we've accomplished.Bill was a husband and a father of four boys. His focus had narrowed to what mattered most—love, relationships, and presence. In this conversation, Bill shares what his days looked like, what cancer was teaching him, and the lessons he wanted his sons to carry forward. He speaks openly about participating in his own living funeral—receiving love, hearing how he mattered, and discovering that he was, and always had been, enough. He also shares how psilocybin treatment helped him come to terms with his diagnosis and arrive at a simple, powerful truth: the meaning of life is to give and receive love. This is the legacy he left behind.“It shouldn't take a terminal disease for you to wake up to your obligation to live a full life—and at the center of that are other people.” — Bill ValentineBill was one of the greatest teachers to ever join Cracking Open. His wisdom, humility, and open heart continue to ripple outward.Rest in peace, Bill.Thank you for everything you taught us.

Episode 123: This week, Kyle Van Pelt talks with Tim Thomas, Chief Investment Officer and Wealth Manager at Badgley Phelps Wealth Managers. Tim joined Badgley Phelps in 2008 and brings more than two decades of experience in financial planning and portfolio management. He specialized in security analysis and selection, portfolio construction, asset allocation, and alternative investments. Tim shares with Kyle about the mechanics of modern portfolio construction. He discusses why the financial plan must be the north star for investment strategy, how to navigate the noisy and rapidly democratizing world of alternative investments, and how AI is changing the backend of advisory work without replacing the human connection. In this episode: (00:00) - Intro (01:33) - Tim's money moment (02:57) - Marrying financial planning with investment strategy (03:56) - How investing has changed over time (06:18) - The rise in alternative investments (09:55) - Understanding alts as more than one asset class (16:24) - How Badgley Phelps helps clients navigate the nuances of alts (18:27) - Managing M&A and the acquisition of Marshall & Sullivan (21:45) - How Badgley Phelps approaches holistic planning (23:40) - Tim's thoughts about the future of the industry (27:25) - Tim's Milemarker Minute Key Takeaways Planning is a strategy. Investments are implementation.  The most effective portfolios are built after the cash flow model is complete.  By understanding the client's lifestyle needs and success rates first, you can determine the specific hurdle rate required to achieve their goals.  Democratization of alts is exciting, but operational risk is real. Alternative investments are booming, but they shouldn't be added to a portfolio just because they are trendy or accessible. Customization beats cookie-cutter strategies. Whether it's equities, fixed income, or alts, thoughtful leaders build client portfolios around client-specific needs — income, growth, risk tolerance, or liquidity — instead of defaulting to one-size-fits-all recommendations. The quarterback model vs. the generalist. There is a massive industry push to bring tax, legal, and estate planning in-house. Sometimes, building a bespoke team of external experts serves the client better than a one-size-fits-all internal department. Quotes "Planning has really come to the forefront, and the investments are critically important because that is the implementation of the plan. US equity-index futures jumped in early trading and oil rebounded as President Donald Trump's administration signaled openness Sunday to a deal with China to quell fresh trade tensions while also warning that recent export controls announced by Beijing were a major barrier to talks. Vice President JD Vance called on Beijing to "choose the path of reason" in the latest spiraling trade fight between the world's two leading economies, claiming that Trump has more leverage if the fight drags on. Trump later posted a statement that hinted at a possible off-ramp for Chinese President Xi Jinping while issuing a veiled threat that a full trade war would wound China. For more, we spoke to Paul Dobson, Bloomberg's Executive Editor for Asia Markets. Plus - The bull market in US stocks is having its third anniversary on Sunday, but if history is any guide it needs to broaden out soon to keep running. The S&P 500 Index began its current bull run on Oct. 12, 2022, soaring 83% in that time and adding about $28 trillion in market value. While the gain was 88% before Friday's selloff on President Donald Trump's threat of a "massive increase" in tariffs on goods from China, the benchmark's 13% jump over the past 12 months is still twice the average rise in the third year of a bull market, according to CFRA Research.
