In this latest episode of our series, Patrick Kennedy and Paul K. Chappell explore more thoroughly the compelling nature of Virtual/Extended Reality and its potential to become the most addictive phenomenon ever created. A key component of the Peace Literacy curriculum is building the capacity to recognize what our true non-physical needs are: belonging, nurturing relationships, expression, inspiration, explanation, etc. Addressing these needs in ways that allow our traumas to be disentangled, and ultimately healed, will be critical to meeting the challenges and opportunities presented by this evolving technology.”The more that our humanity is not developed, the greater the consequences and the greater the debt we are going to owe to Nemesis as this technology matures.” Paul K. In this second conversation on extended reality with Paul K. Chappell, Patrick asks him to share his vision for more deeply understanding what is happening in our time with the technological advances, particularly from the past 100 years. What Paul shares is something like a divine-moral cosmology: what once were the powers of the (Greek) Gods are now in mortal, fallible, vulnerable human hands. According to Paul - and the Greeks - the most powerful God was Hypnos, the God of dreams and sleep. According to Paul, it is this God's powers which are coming into human hands in the digital form of virtual and augmented reality. It is this power that Paul sees will put before us the greatest challenge to our humanity, providing a powerful trial in which we might feel the necessary force of our nemesis in order to heed the call to unfold and evolve our shared humanity. Please see more of what Paul and his team are doing at the Peace Literacy Institute and consider supporting their work. Many thanks to Elliott Chamberlin who composed the theme music, “Seeking Together.” You can find more of his music here. Thanks also to Camilla Lake for the show notes and Patreon/Podcast communications and production. The Light in Every Thing is a podcast of the Seminary of The Christian Community in North America. In this first of a short series of conversations, Patrick speaks with Paul K. Chappell, executive director of the Peace Literacy Institute, about the challenges that “Extended Reality” will pose to humanity. They set the stage to understand the appeal of virtual reality: how trust among people and in institutions is at an all-time low; how we are motivated by “non-physical” needs, which can be easily co-opted when tangled up with trauma; and how despair and a sense of betrayal has grown and intensified over the past decades. “As our technology becomes more powerful, we have to make our humanity more powerful to compensate for that.” - Paul K. Chappell Many thanks to Elliott Chamberlin who composed the theme music, “Seeking Together.” You can find more of his music here.
