Tulsa, Oklahoma artist Arthur Haywood is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other artists and twelve other writers at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 25th. He illustrated the story, "Imagalisk" by Galen Westlake who is a Writers of the Future winner himself. The illustration and story, along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which were officially released on May 7th. Arthur Haywood was born in 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Arthur's father is Pennsylvania State Senator Art Haywood. Creating graffiti murals as a teenager with his teacher, Pose 2, inspired him to share his work publicly in murals. Having a father who has organized reading camps as a State Senator, and a mother who has been president of the local school board showed him the influence of reading on the lives of students. Being an avid reader, who judged books by their covers, led him to sharing stories he loves with others through illustration. He is focused on making book covers, murals for libraries and schools to engage youth in reading. He earned a B.F.A in Illustration from The Maryland Institute College of Art, before furthering his study of classical art at Cambridge Street Studios in Philadelphia and Grand Central Atelier in New York. His paintings are seen in Space and Time Magazine, murals for the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, St. Joseph's University, Elkins Park School, Summer of Soul film, and his book, The Great Library. He is a recipient of the 2020-2021 Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris. There he developed murals with students at Lycée Paul Lapie, Ecollectif and André Malraux Elementary school depicting students of diverse origins reading and the stories that have engaged them to encourage learning and cultural appreciation. He is a recipient of the 2022 - 2023 Tulsa Artist Fellowship where he is continuing his series of paintings for public schools and book covers to inspire reading. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Mississauga, Ontario writer Mr. Galen Westlake is a winner in the L. His family of four, however, confidently assures him the less he says the better. To this end, he more quietly expresses himself by writing stories during his daily commute on the train. When the stranger sitting next to him stops reading over his shoulder, he knows his tale needs a little something extra. Galen's fiction has appeared in Galaxy's Edge and Unidentified Funny Objects. His most recent legal writing may be found in Advocates' Quarterly, if someone were so inclined. Galen was awarded the Silver Play button by Google (they have yet to ask for it back) and he once competed in a Mud Hero-Ultra race event without dying. For a decade, Galen alternated as the VP and treasurer of a nonprofit, operating a nursery school for inner-city children in Toronto. He has been a janitor, a camp counselor, and once spent a summer mining a cryptocurrency that may or may not have actually existed. His laser tag score is outstanding.

Joe Boruchow is a Philadelphia based muralist and paper cutout artist whose site- specific work is designed to fit into architectural niches and public spaces. Born and raised in the Washington DC area, he moved to Philadelphia in 1997.The self-taught artist started working in paper cutout in 2003 and has been consistently exploring ways to transcend the traditional medium, translating his designs into large scale murals, graphic novels, fine art prints and metal wall hangings. Inspired by his surroundings, current events and architecture, his black and white installations have become iconic in the Philadelphia region.His work explores themes of race, sexuality, politics, history and art, all through the subtractive art of paper cutout. His designs are all created from a single piece of black paper where all the white sections are excised by hand with an exacto blade and all the black sections must connect to the whole. Often quite small, the original paper cutouts are scaled up to fit their intended space.He was a finalist for Pew Fellowship and has worked on major murals with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. His graphic novel, “Stuffed Animals” was awarded a Xeric Grant for graphic fiction. As a visiting artist, he is often called upon to lecture and instruct at colleges such as The University of the Arts and institutions such as The Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His commissioned and uncommisioned work have gained a large regional following and has been covered by national and international press and blogs.Exhibitions of his original paper cutouts continue to astonish followers of his work with their intricacy and craftsmanship. The intimate scale of the paper cutouts contrasted with his monumental murals, create a tension between the private and public aspects of the work. Mural Miles is a social and educational club that runs miles to murals in Philadelphia - a city with over 4,000 murals and more public art than any other in the world. Craig's group learns about art while on the move and builds community through runs that are catered to all fitness levels. Just wait until you hear what's next for this club! Eric is a lead muralist with Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and has over 150 public art commissions throughout the Northeast United States, as well as murals in Hawaii, Spain, Jordan, and Norway. Eric has seen his projects provide a sense of inclusion and accomplishment amongst its participants that in turn empower entire communities. Tribute to Lillian Marrero by Danny Torres and Peter Pagast is a mural at the intersection of N 6th St and W Lehigh Ave. Completed in 2005 by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the painting honors Lillian Marrero for her work and dedication to the North Philadelphia community. Marrero was a librarian, advocate, and community leader. In 2006, the neighborhood library where Marrero worked, across the street from the mural, was renamed in her honor. In this episode, we’ll speak with three of our colleagues from the Lillian Marrero Library: Tania Maria Rios Marrero, daughter of Lillian Marrero and Community Organizer, Mieka Moody, Library Supervisor, and Natalie Walker, Digital Resource Specialist. McCray was born in North Philadelphia in 1953 and raised in Brewerytown, a neighborhood of North Philadelphia. During the late 1960s, he and a group of friends started doing graffiti in Philadelphia, by writing their monikers on walls across the city. The movement spread to New York City and blossomed into the modern graffiti movement, which reached its peak in the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and then spread to Europe. Since his tagging days, McCray has developed a close relationship with The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. He is a public speaker and a youth advocate. • #ArtAboveReality

Jane Golden is a powerhouse. An artist, visionary, activist, educator, author and expert on urban transformation through art, she is the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. It began in 1984 as an anti-graffiti initiative and under Jane's direction has created more than 38-hundred landmark works of art. It is the country's largest mural program. We couldn't be more thrilled that she shares her story with us!
