This episode features a conversation with Momin Sheikh, exploring the intersection of faith, culture, and identity within the Muslim community, particularly focusing on the experiences of first-generation American Muslims. The hosts discuss the nuances of being "Pakistani Muslim" versus strictly religious, addressing how cultural practices often blend with and sometimes overshadow core Islamic tenets. The conversation navigates through personal faith journeys, the challenges of maintaining religious identity in a Western context, especially post-9/11, and the evolving interpretation of Islamic practices. They examine the importance of spirituality, good works, and ethical conduct as expressions of faith, while grappling with prescriptive religious practices and the diversity of beliefs within Islam, advocating for a more inclusive and action-oriented approach to faith. Momin Sheikh is an entrepreneur and real estate developer based in Philadelphia. At Frankel Management Company (FMC), he leads development efforts with his team to deliver 100-200 multi-family residential units and over 250,000 sq. ft. of commercial space annually. His work focuses on fund strategy, capital raises, and investor relations, bringing transformative projects to life. Beyond real estate, Momin is the founder of Open Admissions, an edtech company dedicated to expanding access to higher education. Through technology-driven solutions, the platform empowers students to navigate the college admissions process with confidence and clarity. Previously, he founded MerakiCMO, a consulting agency that served over two dozen multinational clients. Before launching his own ventures, he held senior finance roles at JP Morgan, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, gaining extensive experience in investment banking, private equity, and commercial lending. That background shaped his ability to structure deals, underwrite investments, and foster strong relationships with stakeholders. Momin is also deeply committed to philanthropy. He co-founded Friends For Good, a nonprofit that connects young professionals to charitable causes, and serves on the boards of organizations such as CareLink, Down North Pizza, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he mentors and contributes to community-driven initiatives. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, collecting art, and supporting causes close to his heart. In 2019, he was honored with the Philadelphia Business Journal's 40-Under-40 award, recognizing his contributions to business and the community.

After dealing with the effects of tick-borne Lyme disease for years, Bucks County native James Calcagni was inspired to help others battling their own health struggles. In February, the Temple University grad founded Liquid Limbs, a prosthetic device company designed to improve mobility for those with lower leg amputations. Dubbed the “Navigator,” Liquid Limbs' patent-pending prototype consists of a nonslip foot, side handle and shin plate. The goal of the product is to offer stability for people walking or showering without their everyday prosthetic, which often cannot get wet because of the metal materials in them. So far Liquid Limbs has secured $21,000 in winnings from pitch competitions, including a second-place finish in Temple's Be Your Own Boss Bowl in April. The CEO of the early stage startup was recently named one of the top innovators in Philadelphia under the age of 25 by Philadelphia Business Journal, and is now looking to secure additional funding to help with the manufacturing and launch costs of the company's flagship product. There is no denying that understanding various personality types helps reduce and resolve drama in the workplace, and any areas of life for that matter. Understanding how others are wired gives us major clues on how to interact with them and leads to empathy instead of frustration during times of conflict. With there being so many different personality quizzes out there, it can become overwhelming to know which ones to pay attention to, but the DISC framework is very easy to understand, and widely used in the workplace. Today's guest found a way to make these personality types even more interactive by bringing them to life and teaching others how to better communicate and foster an engaging culture. Merrick Rosenberg reinvented how people learn about themselves through the power of personality. He is the CEO of Take Flight Learning and author of five books about the Eagle, Parrot, Dove, and Owl styles, which you will learn about today. Merrick has worked with more than half of the Fortune 100 companies in the U.S. and around the world. Under Merrick's leadership as CEO of Take Flight Learning, his company has been selected as the New Jersey Business of the Year by NJ Biz Magazine and has repeatedly been named as one of the Fastest Growing Companies and Best Places to Work in the Philadelphia area by the Philadelphia Business Journal. In this episode, Merrick explains the idea of the “platinum rule”, which is to treat others how they want to be treated, instead of how you want to be treated. This idea is crucial because not everyone engages the same way, and learning to communicate with others based on their personality helps us to better get our message across and reduce conflict. This idea isn't just applicable for leaders, but is also a very important concept for relationships in general whether it's with a partner or our kids. Merrick shares very exciting news about an upcoming project he has been working on, and you don't want to miss this one. Key highlights:How Merrick got into DISC personality traitsThe importance of communicating according to personality typesThe platinum rule: treat people how they want to be treatedWhy Merrick chose DISC personality type framework instead of others out thereMerrick's favorite results that he gets from training companiesHow does implementing the birds get rid of drama? The U.S. Presidents and their styles: which personality types win every election? The recent shift in common personality types of CEOsYour style doesn't determine your success but it does determine how you are going to go about being successfulWe need to understand people and their style instead of trying to change themMistakes Eric made before learning about the importance of personality stylesHow do you get in front of and sell to your ideal client? How Merrick landed a Tedx talkQuote from the episode:“Once we have awareness, we can change what we're doing.” - Merrick RosenbergConnect with Merrick Rosenberg:Website: merrickrosenberg.comTake the assessments: takeflightlearning.comTwitter: @MerrickRInstagram: @merrick_rosenbergFacebook: Merrick RosenbergYouTube: Take Flight LearningConnect with Eric:Be sure to connect with me in the Lead Sell Grow - The Human Experience Mastermind Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadsellgrow/Pick up your copy of B2B Sales Secrets HereLearn more about our services: www.TheGoalGuide.comImprove your sales and stay connected – Free Gifts Here https://shor.by/TheGoalGuide

How can coffee change the world? According to Saxby's CEO and Founder, Nick Bayer, it begins with educating young entrepreneurs. This week Laura and Nick discuss how Saxby's is empowering young people to embrace the humanity of the hospitality industry and build a business that creates an impact.   Here are a few things you'll learn during this conversation: How Saxby's created an academic experience while building real businesses Why every young entrepreneur needs a course in critical thinking skills for business How to develop your empathy skills Why Saxby's made B Corp status a priority What you can do to hold your team accountable to your mission and values   During the 24-Hour Influence Challenge, Nick encourages you to respond to all digital communication within 24 hours and evaluate how it impacts trust and relationship building.   Nick Bayer has always been in the business of bringing people together, whether it's as one of Philadelphia Business Journal's "Most Admired CEOs" or as a consummate team captain since Little League. So when he created Saxbys in 2005, Nick never really considered it to be a coffee company — instead, it's a social impact company fueled by amazing food, beverage, and hospitality. Saxbys has since grown from one corner café to a nearly 30-unit, Philadelphia-based business with a singular mission: Make Life Better.   For Nick Bayer, “making life better" began by fostering an O.D.D (outgoing, detail-oriented, and disciplined) team, committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and aligned by their shared entrepreneurial spirit and Saxbys' core values. Today, that team spans over 500 members across the Northeast that represent the change-makers of tomorrow. To that point, Bayer introduced Saxbys' pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) in 2015 in partnership with Drexel University — the nation's first entirely student-run cafe where students earn full academic credit and wages through a university cooperative education program.   Bayer's vision for the program is to embolden the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing undergrad students with tangible experience as a supplement to traditional classroom learning. In five short years, one ELP cafe has blossomed to a dozen, with five more partnerships opening in the Fall of 2021.   Nick is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, an adjunct professor at Drexel University and the Executive in Residence at Temple University's Fox School of Business.   He serves on the Board of The Franklin Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University's Close School of Entrepreneurship and Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center, as well as being a Corporate Council Member for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been recognized as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, EY's "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" and among the “100 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Philadelphia” by the Philadelphia Business Journal.   He resides in Center City Philadelphia with his wife Haley and son Luke.   You can connect with Nick in the following ways: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickbayer6/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsnickbayer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/nickbayer Company Website: https://www.saxbyscoffee.com/   To learn more about Dr. Laura Sicola and how mastering influence can impact your success go to https://www.speakingtoinfluence.com/quickstart and download the quick start guide for mastering the three C's of influence.   You can connect with Laura in the following ways:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlaurasicola LinkedIn Business Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/vocal-impact-productions/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/VocalImpactProductions Facebook: Vocal Impact Productions Twitter: @Laura Sicola  Instagram: @VocalImpactProductionsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Education Evolution
106. Creating Global Citizens Starting in K-8 with Dr. Naomi Johnson-Booker

Education Evolution

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2022 47:57

The ease with which we can travel and connect with others across the globe is mind-blowing, when you think about how people traveled and communicated just a generation or two ago. But yet, in some of the lower-income communities in the U.S., people often live and work within a 10-block radius. That means the children of these communities have their worlds limited to these confines too.   That's what makes what Dr. Naomi Johnson-Booker even more extraordinary. This week on the podcast, Dr. Booker is sharing how the Global Leadership Academy is growing global citizens, starting in kindergarten.   Travel opens up minds and hearts, and it also opens up incredible opportunities for these students, who travel across their state of Pennsylvania, into Canada, and even as far as China, the Caribbean, and Kenya. As K-8 students!   I'm in awe of all that Dr. Booker has been able to accomplish since founding this school and I hope our conversation provides inspiration to you! About Dr. Naomi Johnson-Booker: Dr. Booker is 76 years old and still works with the motivation and strength she had when she first entered education more than 50 years ago. Dr. Booker's claim to fame is that after leaving the School District of Philadelphia where she went from a 3rd-grade teacher to an assistant superintendent, she created the first K-8 public charter school in the United States to send urban scholars on expeditions at every grade level to include international travel.    And this dedicated septuagenarian has more than one job—she is the Founder and CEO of the Global Leadership Academy Charter School West, Founder and Executive Director of Global Academies, and Founder and Administrator of Global Leadership Academy Charter School Southwest. Her scholars come from neighborhoods in which children tend not to travel beyond their 10-block radius. Dr. Booker breaks them out of that radius by taking them to culturally relevant historic sites in Center City such as Mother Bethel AME Church where Richard Allen is buried. With each grade level, the scholars travel further from home on GLA's K-8 designed pathway that includes visiting rural PA in the Amish Country, the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, following the Underground Railroad from the Belmont Mansion to Canada, embarking on a civil rights tour spanning Birmingham, Atlanta, and Memphis where Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered, and in 8th grade, they travel to an international destination based on the school year's studies. These passport-holding young teens and tweens have been to Africa, China, Bahama, Haiti, Jamaica, and will continue to add more nations each year once travel can safely resume. Dr. Booker has received the School District of Philadelphia's prestigious Lindback award, named as a “Woman of Distinction” by the Philadelphia Business Journal, and recognized by the Philadelphia City Council as a “Living Legend.” At the time of this writing, Dr. Booker is completing an application to add a high school. He's the author of four books about tapping into the power of your personality, including The Chameleon and Personality Wins. Welcome, Merrick. Merrick: Thanks for having me. Marlana: So first of all, tell us what these personality types are. Merrick: Well, there's four core styles, and historically; they've been this alphabet soup of letters. And I wanted to make it easier and simple for people to remember. So I linked the four styles to four birds makes it pretty easy and also very obvious too. If you think about an eagle. Eagles are confident, they're assertive, they're take charge, very direct, they like to be in charge. You've got parrots, parrots are fun. They're social, talkative, outgoing, they bring lots of energy and excitement, doves caring, compassionate, or soft spoken. This is that person in your family. They want everyone to get along. They are harmonious and all like conflict. They're the peacemaker. And then you have the owl who's logical and analytical and detail oriented, if they're going to do something, they have a plan. And they do it right. The first time. They're accurate and very systematic, and they ask lots of questions. So we've got four styles. We're not just one, we're a combination of all four, but they play out in everything we do, from our personal relationships to work wherever we go, Marlana: can we be one, but strive to be another? Or it's pretty much inherent in us, whatever the one is? Merrick: There's often one or two styles that are very strong for us. And, you know, they drive our success, they allow us to be who we are, if you work out of your style, and you want it to be something else, it would be exhausting. If you take something like public speaking, well, parrots tend to like to be in front of a group, they love the energy, they like the fanfare. If you took that parrot and put them out on stage, they're loving it, it feeds their soul. But if you put them in a cubicle eight hours a day, and they have crank data in spreadsheets, and have zero human interaction, they would go home exhausted every day. So if you had a parrot who was trying to be more like an owl, they're just not wired for it, it would drain them, and why not do what feeds you instead of what drains you? So be yourself, trying to be somebody else is just going to exhaust you anyway. Marlana: Which that makes perfect sense. So, tell us, what are the strengths of each one? Like how do we lean into that? Merrick: If you look at the strength of the eagle style,...
