BASEBALL IN THE ROARING TWENTIES: The Yankees, the Cardinals, and the Captivating 1926 Season by Thomas Wolf (University of Nebraska Press, September 1, 2025) Quick recap The discussion between Brian and Tom Wolf centered on Wolf's new book about the 1926 baseball season, which explored notable players like Babe Ruth and the competitive dynamics between teams that year. The conversation delved into the broader sports landscape of the 1920s, including the rise of different sports and the challenges faced by black baseball players during this era. The discussion concluded with an examination of key figures in baseball history, including Rube Foster's role in forming the Negro Leagues and the alleged scandal involving Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker. 1926 Baseball Season Highlights Tom Wolf discussed his new book, BASEBALL IN THE ROARING TWENTIES, focusing on the 1926 season, which he selected for research related to his previous book, The Called Shot: Babe Ruth, the Chicago Cubs, and the Unforgettable Major League Baseball Season of 1932 (Nebraska, 2020). He highlighted the compelling nature of the 1926 season, which featured notable players like Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby, and explored their rivalry despite never playing against each other in the same league. Tom noted that the season's dynamics, including the Yankees' and Cardinals' intense competition, made it particularly interesting. The discussion focused on the 1926 baseball season, particularly the dramatic career turnaround of Babe Ruth, who went from a poor 1925 season to lead the Yankees to first place in 1926, marking the beginning of his second-half career dominance. The conversation also explored the broader context of 1920s sports, including the rise of college football, boxing, and horse racing, as well as the emergence of the Negro Leagues and the challenges faced by black baseball players during that era. The discussion highlighted how the Black Sox scandal and Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis's opposition to integration effectively halted the progress toward racial integration in baseball, despite early efforts by managers like John McGraw and Connie Mack to sign black players. Rube Foster's Vision for Integration The discussion focused on Rube Foster, a pivotal figure in the formation of the Negro Leagues in 1920, and his vision for integrating baseball. Foster's health crisis in 1926 led to his decline and eventual death. Still, his legacy includes the first colored World Series in 1924 and an 11-game World Series between the Chicago American Giants and the Atlantic City Giants. The conversation explored Foster's ultimate goal of integrating the major leagues, which began to happen with Jackie Robinson in 1948, and his proposal for exhibition games between Negro League teams and Major League teams, which was rejected by MLB owners concerned about the impact of integration on their bottom line. 1919 Black Sox Scandal Investigation Brian and Tom discussed the alleged scandal involving Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker, which Dutch Leonard claimed was a fixed game in 1919. They explored the history of the scandal, including Cobb and Speaker's retirements under pressure from Commissioner Landis, as well as the $20,000 in hush money paid to Leonard by Ban Johnson. The conversation highlighted the complex relationships and power dynamics between baseball executives and players during this period. 1926 Baseball Rivalry Insights The discussion turned to the rivalry between the American League and the National League. Tom and Brian explored the careers of several legendary players, the 1927 Yankees' dominance, and Babe Ruth's controversial stolen base attempt in the 1926 World Series. They also discussed the different styles and strategies of the two leagues, emphasizing the historical significance of the World Series when the leagues were more distinct in their approaches. # # # Ready for insights reserved for serious listeners only? 1926 was one of the most dynamic and exciting seasons in baseball history, featuring legends like Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, Grover Cleveland Alexander, and Ty Cobb. It saw a gambling scandal involving two of the greatest players in baseball history, a mid-season acquisition that changed the history of a franchise, and a parallel season in the Negro Leagues with some of the all time greats in Black Baseball history. And it all ended with an epic seven game World Series between the Yankees and the Cardinals. Everyone knows John Fetterman here in Western PA — he was the Democratic mayor of nearby Braddock, rose to lieutenant governor under Tom Wolf, and now he's the commonwealth's senior U.S. Senator — in part, because he rode a progressive blue wave. But these days, the Harvard-educated AmeriCorps alum is increasingly aligned with MAGA Republicans. Ahead of a ticketed event in Pittsburgh this weekend, we're teaming up with City Cast Philly's Matt Katz and Philadelphia Inquirer political reporter Julia Terruso to talk about Fetterman's evolving priorities and what they could mean for us here in Pennsylvania. Fetterman's event will be co-hosted by fellow U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA) to promote McCormick's new book about mentorship, “Who Believed in You.” The location is still TBD, possibly because some groups in Pittsburgh are planning to protest. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Free Store, founded in 2012 by Gisele Barreto Fetterman, who is also on the schedule to attend. Former Congressman Conor Lamb, who lost the Democratic primary against Fetterman in 2022, has been a vocal critic of Fetterman's lately. He's holding his own town hall in State College on Saturday with the Centre County Democratic Committee.  Learn more about the sponsors of this March 27th episode: Pittsburgh Opera History UnErased Become a member of City Cast Pittsburgh at membership.citycast.fm. When thieves made off with Darcie Bell's rented U-Haul truck, the San Francisco woman put out a call for help on X: “If you see a 26 foot uhaul truck with the Arizona plate AL50003- would you let me know because it had like everything I own on it.” The post went viral, but not for the reason she hoped for. Bell spent years posting left-wing “Defund the police” views — and users across the site blasted and mocked the activist. “Anti Police activist begs the police to help,” jeered the X account Bay State of Mind, which comments on San Francisco Bay Area politics. Tom Wolf, an addiction recovery advocate who has nearly 30,000 followers, posted a screenshot of a previous post in which Bell blasts the San Francisco police, alongside a screenshot of her recent plea. “Shot. In September of 2022 before leaving office, then Gov. Tom Wolf announced the creation of three new state parks. Susquehanna Riverlands in York County, Big Elk Creek in Chester County and Vosburg Neck in Wyoming County. While these new state parks were quickly opened following the announcement, they have not taken their final form. Before they can be completed – or really before they even start – these parks must go through a rigorous master planning process with numerous phases. There's the planning phase, the design phase, the engineering phase and the construction phase. But in between those phases and additional processes, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources must seek public input, hold public forums and receive feedback from various stakeholders. The opening of the state parks to the public was the easy part. But, now's the hard part. The amount of questions that must be answered and properly addressed can be stagging. Our season finale is meant to let listeners know when the various phases will be complete, what sort of activities and camping options will be available and what the future holds for our three newest parks. And for this large task I wanted to go straight to the source. On this episode, I speak with John Hallas. Can a balanced approach to harm reduction and recovery really save lives? Join us in a thought-provoking conversation with Tom Wolf, a member of the Recovery community from San Francisco, offering a raw and unfiltered critique of today's drug policies. We scrutinize Vancouver's harm reduction model and its alarming overdose death rates, while Tom passionately argues for recovery-focused solutions in the face of new proposals advocating "safe" drug-use spaces and other radical drug provisions. This episode sheds light on the crucial need to integrate more sensible harm reduction interventions with prevention, treatment, and recovery initiatives for a more humane and effective drug policy.Dive deep into the broader debate on drug policy strategies as we question advocates' desire to legalize all drugs, scrutinize the opioid crisis, and expose the cultural influence of big corporations on advocacy. With Tom's powerful insights, we explore how recovery voices must lead the way in policymaking. Listen as we highlight real-life advocacy successes from San Francisco and discuss the vital role of individuals in recovery in shaping policies that truly address addiction. This episode is a comprehensive examination of the pressing issues in drug policy, offering a blueprint for a balanced and recovery-centric approach.Follow the work of SAM and FDPS below:https://learnaboutsam.org/https://gooddrugpolicy.org/https://thedrugreport.org/On X: https://twitter.com/learnaboutsamhttps://twitter.com/GoodDrugPolicyhttps://twitter.com/KevinSabethttps://twitter.com/LukeNiforatosOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learnaboutsam
