Matthew Garcia has been in jail for 26 years for second-degree felony murder. He didn't even have a gun, yet he has a life sentence. As an adopted child from North Philadelphia, Matthew has turned his life around in remarkable ways. He is a published author with a book called "Raw Reflections" and graduated with college courses from Villanova, St. Joseph's, Bryn Mawr, and Widener University. Matthew also created his own mentoring program called the Real Rap Program and has scholarships for at-risk youth with Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Despite these achievements, he remains behind bars due to Pennsylvania's harsh felony murder law. This petition seeks to change the felony murder law in Pennsylvania to make lifers like Matthew eligible for parole. His case shares similarities with Derek Lee's case that the PA Supreme Court is ready to rule on, including 17 amicus briefs filed on behalf of individuals like him. Please support Matthew Garcia by signing this petition and advocating for fairer sentencing laws in Pennsylvania! If you would like to help Matthew out, the petition is below https://www.change.org/p/change-pennsylvania-s-felony-murder-law-to-allow-parole-for-lifers?recruiter=1338786924&recruited_by_id=1f98e0d0-13f6-11ef-8e42-110cd3ef6ae3&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard&utm_medium=copylink#FREEMATTHEWGARCIA

Charles Walden was raised in the rough and tough inner city of Philadelphia and had to struggle and survive like any other kid in the inner city. He got No breaks just because he had Cerebral Palsy. He was not babied at all by family, friends, or the community. He had to put his pants on one leg at a time like every other boy or man. He had to overcome many obstacles. There was a lot of mental and physical pain he endured from living and growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia. The death of his mother crushed him, but he kept going. She was his rock. Many years have passed since her death and the pain never goes away but he keeps going. Charles' greatest pleasure is when he's on stage performing as he gives his audiences the most inspirational laughing good time they've had in a long while. Charles Walden is not embarrassed or ashamed of his Cerebral Palsy and has incorporated his condition in a unique way into his standup comedy show. Charles is proud to say stand up comedy has giving him the opportunity to perform on some iconic TV shows and stages such as BETs Comic View, Martin Lawrence 1st Amendment and even Def Comedy Jam's All-Star Season, to name a few. Charles is a requested favorite to perform at colleges, universities, comedy clubs, churches and military bases across the Country. On today's show we are taking a short walk through the history books. As some of you know, I've been building apartment buildings in Philadelphia for much of the 2010's. We assembled numerous properties over the span of several years. Many of these homes in North Philadelphia were built in the early 1900's. These homes were very traditional townhouses that were made of structural brick. The party walls were supporting walls for the homes on either side of the walls. If I compare construction of similar vintage in other cities, the method of construction was vastly different in Philadelphia, and other cities.-------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Fallingwater's listing the in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The State Museum of Pennsylvania has an exhibit honoring the place that held so much significance. According to Dr. Curt Miner, the Chief of Interpretation and Senior History Curator for the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the exhibit will be on display until January 5, 2025. "One of the things that we did in the course of researching this project is come across what I think is an absolutely fascinating fact. I believe it would be, which is that falling water in surveys is often ranked as the most recognized private residence in the world. Let that sit in for a little bit in the world. This building, this house that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1938 for Edgar J. Kaufmann, who was, by the way, a department store magnate from Pittsburgh, has been heralded as the most recognized and most famous private residence in the world. And where is it? It's in Pennsylvania. It's in the small town of Mill Run, which is in in Fayette County in southwestern Pennsylvania." Dr. Miner also highlighted "A Place for All Exhibit. This exhibition tells the history of three integration efforts in Pennsylvania after World War II. These stories testify to the courage of those who sought to end racial segregation in all of its forms. "The subtitle of that exhibit is "Three Stories of Integration in Pennsylvania." The genesis of that exhibit actually goes back two decades. We had a curator on staff. His name was Eric Ledell Smith. He was a specialist in African-American history. And he came up with an idea for us and it presented to the curatorial staff and to the museum eventually. And he said, I think we need to tell the story of the civil rights movement in Pennsylvania. And his premise was that the Civil Rights Movement is often thought to be the story that takes place in the American South. When you think of civil rights and the movement led by Martin Luther King and others, you think of places like Little Rock, Arkansas, Birmingham, Alabama, Greensboro, North Carolina. You don't think about places like Levittown, Pennsylvania, and Bucks County or Girard College in North Philadelphia, or the Highland Park swimming pool in Pittsburgh. And yet, Eric argued correctly, Those were all places where the struggle for racial equality in the north took place. It was simply the idea that racial discrimination, and segregation did not stop at the Mason-Dixon Line. It went North even in places like Pennsylvania."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the winter of 1995, Joyce Dennis was killed during her closing shift at a laundromat in North Philadelphia, PA. Police then rounded up a group of teenagers and, over the course of several months, got them to implicate two of their friends for the crime, including Eddie Ramirez. Despite the fact that no physical evidence tied him to the murder scene, Eddie would spend 27 years in prison for a crime he's always maintained he did not commit. Ever had that moment when you realized you needed glasses for the first time or found yourself relying on coffee just to get through the day? This episode is an honest exploration of the Hip Hop genre's 50-year milestone and the aging of its trailblazers. We contrast the often negative views of aging in American society with biblical teachings that celebrate growing older as part of the path to wisdom and spiritual growth. Our discussion navigates the complex intergenerational dynamics within hip hop, examining how older artists strive to stay relevant instead of embracing maturity. We touch on the disconnect between maintaining a youthful image and the respect that should accompany age, highlighting timeless virtues like self-control and dignity. As we reflect on the beauty of aging with grace and wisdom, we suggest that aging can add meaningful depth to our lives. The episode wraps up with a hopeful prayer for aging gracefully to the glory of God, encouraging you to embrace your journey with dignity and grace. Blend all the ingredients together until smooth. If still grainy, add a little more water. 2. Chill before using. Broccoli Salad Ingredients: 2 heads broccoli 2 medium sweet potatoes 1 red onion 2 medium carrots 1 medium apple 1 cup cooked farro Smokey tofu “mayo” dressing (see above) Instructions: 1. Cut broccoli florets into bite-sized pieces. * 2. Dice onion, carrots, and apple into 1⁄4” pieces. 3. Dice sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch pieces. Boil until fork tender, drain well, and roast to get some color in a 425 F oven (15-20 minutes). 4. Toast 1⁄2 cup of farro in a dry pan until fragrant. Add 1 1⁄2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, fluff with a fork, and then cover for another 5-10 minutes. 5. Toss all the ingredients in the creamy dressing and chill before serving. *If you prefer your broccoli not as raw tasting, blanch for 1 minute in hot water then shock in ice. Trim off the more fibrous outer portion of the stem and make sure to chop up and include this portion in your salad. Note: preparing this a day ahead optimizes the nutrient punch of many of these ingredients. The sweet potatoes and farro will develop more resistant starch content and the broccoli will contain more of the amazing health-promoting compound, sulforaphane. In this episode, we reflect on the continual learning and relearning essential for a vibrant spiritual life. From the importance of Bible reading and prayer to the vital role of church involvement, we discuss how life's trials and busyness can cause these practices to gradually wane. Maintaining them is crucial for spiritual health. We share practical insights on integrating the spiritual and secular aspects of life, prioritizing communion with God, and starting each day in His presence. Drawing inspiration from Jesus' early morning prayers, we illustrate how adopting such habits can deeply enrich one's walk with the Lord. We also look at how the natural world's inherent rhythms are part of God's design and how routines teach us to seek nourishment and joy from Him continually. Unlike physical hunger, neglecting spiritual disciplines can lead to a diminished sense of need for God— even an increased appetite for worldly things, fostering a false sense of self-sufficiency. Conversely, consistently tapping into the means of grace, such as prayer and scripture, can increase our spiritual hunger and desire for God. Ultimately, spiritual disciplines are not mere obligations but opportunities to grow closer to God and delight in His presence. In the early 2000's, the unlikely alliance between predominantly White Reformed evangelicals and the African American Christian hip-hop community shattered conventional church norms. Together, they embarked on a bold experiment to model unity in Christ across ethnic lines. Yet these partnerships faced multifaceted challenges. The optimism of the early 2000s gradually dissolved into frustration, significant fragmentation and disillusionment. This was largely fueled by the varying responses to the backdrop of ethnic tension in our culture. We dissect the painful yet crucial conversations that these tensions provoked within multi-ethnic congregations. And seek to offer an honest look at the relational strife that emerged, stressing the urgency for a reset and a renewed commitment to love and understanding. Our conversation delves into historical perspectives and the power of viewing each other through the gospel and New Creation lenses. Reflecting on figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and contrasting with Malcolm X's approach, we discuss the importance of rejecting demonization of others and bearing witness to God's kingdom. In this episode, we navigate the emotional journey of fatherhood, from the initial excitement of expecting a child to the overwhelming sense of responsibility that comes with it. I share my personal story of preparing for the birth of my first child, reflecting on my own upbringing without a father figure and the anxiety that ensued. My friends Ben and Duce also share their own experiences — both the good and the difficult. Reflecting on our fathers' influence, we discuss the balance of discipline and love that shaped our upbringing and how it has informed how we father our own children. We also explore the elements of fatherhood and parenting that are needed to raise a godly generation. There is a critical importance of understanding fatherhood through scripture rather than cultural norms so we highlight how earthly fatherhood reflects God's design — we, as earthly fathers, have the privilege and responsibility to mirror God's fatherhood. And by God's grace we will be faithful to model that incredible reality. The conversation ranges widely as Abby, Patrick, and Joseph discuss what “trauma” means in popular discourse, literary criticism, and real-world trauma centers; the pleasures of food, video games, and genre expectations; Freud, the family, and authentic human connections sustained online; liberal narratives of universality and the dignity of work; the rhetoric of “boundaries”; and living and working through familial relationships that defy neat categorization and challenge us at every turn.Key texts cited in the episode:Elaine Castillo, How To Read NowOmari Akil, “Warning: Playing Pokémon GO is a Death Sentence if You are a Black Man, “ available at https://medium.com/dayone-a-new-perspective/warning-pokemon-go-is-a-death-sentence-if-you-are-a-black-man-acacb4bdae7fParul Sehgal, “The Tyranny of the Tale,” available at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/07/10/seduced-by-story-peter-brooks-bewitching-the-modern-mind-christian-salmon-the-story-paradox-jonathan-gottschall-book-reviewSehgal, “The Case Against the Trauma Plot,” available at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/01/03/the-case-against-the-trauma-plot Saidiya Hartman, Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth-century America Mat Johnson, Pym Gayl Jones, Mosquito Patrick Jagoda, “On Difficulty in Video Games,” available at https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/699585 Have you noticed that Freud is back? Dan has known of Quincy Stallworth for years, especially for Quincy's job running SoFar Sounds concerts in Philadelphia since around 2018. Quincy sits down to talk about his musical upbringing in the Baptist churches of Southwest and North Philadelphia, his early bands, and how he always excelled at the "business" side of being in a group as much as the musical side. Quincy and many others were all abruptly terminated from SoFar last winter, but Quincy already has his next thing going: Mill Street Music, an intimate listening room over the bridge in Mount Holly, NJ. Dan and Quincy get into a lot: Bowie, cocaine albums, how to keep something from getting too big, the ups and downs of his SoFar journey, and how you'll always find yourself drawn to driven, creative people no matter what. Check out Mill Street Music's calendar, as well as Quincy's photography, and his podcast, Quince Questions.
Stigall got a last minute exclusive Saturday backstage for Trump's North Philadelphia rally. He packed as many questions as he could into a short time. School choice, the border, the debate Thursday night, the Russian ships off Florida's coast, and more. Hear all the details of what goes into the work of these rallies, and the REAL news Stigall says you didn't hear about that event, and the man not nearly enough people know or get to see in person. Plus, Andrew Cuomo and Bill Maher are worried lawfare and a wide open border could cost Democrats this fall. You think?! Elizabeth Warren embarrasses herself trying to defend Biden's border inaction. What happens when you reach the midpoint of your life and look around to realize you didn't know who your true friends were anymore? In this episode, I share my personal journey of navigating the complexities of male friendships post-40, exploring why it's so challenging to establish new bonds at this stage in life. Through reflections on life events, social media influences, and political differences, Ben, Duce and I discuss the reasons behind so many broken relationships. We discuss how men are socialized to prioritize activities over genuine emotional connections, often leading to superficial, transactional friendships. We also hit the value of meaningful friendships within Christian communities — emphasizing the importance of finding a close-knit group of true friends who share the bond of Christ. Moreover, we underline the role of the local church in fostering these connections. Christ during His time on earth modeled what genuine friendship looks like and we want to encourage you to seek for and endure in brotherly bonds that sharpen and encourage you in the Lord. On this episode, I introduce the concept of the "Christo Urbanite," a term that perfectly encapsulates individuals who are immersed in urban hip-hop culture but are transformed by a profound Christian faith. We discuss how iconic albums like Illmatic and hip-hop pioneers like Run DMC coupled with a faith in Jesus Christ led to a synthesis that became the catalyst for the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) movement of the early 2000's — a pivotal period that shaped today's fusion of faith and beats. We tackle the nuances of teaching our kids to view hip-hop through a Christ-centered lens and balancing cultural identity with theological integrity. Sharing personal stories and reflections, we talk about the long-standing conversation on integrating faith with hip-hop, emphasizing the diverse community of urbanites who have embraced this blend. Whether you're an artist, parent, scholar, or professional, this episode celebrates maintaining your cultural and theological distinctives while striving to honor the Lord in every aspect of life. Caring for my mother in the aftermath of her stroke was a crucible that birthed a shift in my perspective on life. The difficulties of that season demanded I consider what I truly valued as I entered the “midpoint” of my life — my halftime. On the Halftime Pod I'll be joined by my good friends Ben Otero and William “Duce” Branch — old friends with a wealth of wisdom. We will explore what it means to be 'Christo-Urbanites' at life's midpoint. And we're not just waxing nostalgic about our early days in Christian hip hop; we're dissecting the teachings of the Bible, contemplating the finite nature of our time here, and the intentional steps we must take as we tiptoe into the second act of our lives. It's a candid conversation, steeped in the realities we all face and the wisdom we hope to pass on to the generations that follow. In an upset on the House floor, the measure, which would extend a section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act known as Section 702, failed what is normally a routine procedural test.
