POPULARITY
It has been scientifically proven that we tend to overvalue our losses and undervalue our wins, which can affect our future decision-making. The good news is that people usually only remember your wins, not your losses, and Richard Branson is a perfect example. My guest, Dr Jesse Green, is no stranger to the Podiatry Legends Podcast. He has been a guest on episodes 144 and 200, and I've asked him to come back to talk about why people focus so much on their losses and not enough on their wins. Dr Jesse Green runs Practice Max, one of Australia's largest Dental Coaching Organisations and hosts the Savvy Dentist Podcast. This episode is a dual episode that Jesse and I decided to use on both shows. In this episode, we discuss the following: A new word - PISSOFFEDNESS. Why do we over-value our losses in life yet undervalue our day-to-day wins? The reason people keep on hanging on to losses is that they don't want to admit that they've made a mistake. And it will hold them back from making the next decision! A good decision can still lead to a poor outcome. So what can you do in this situation? Expect that some of your decisions will be wrong the further you try to predict the outcome. What will happen in a week is much easier than what will happen in twelve months. CAPACITY PLANNING - Using numbers to make your decisions based on past decisions and future predictions. You're working on the balance of probability. So if you've had a few things go wrong and are a little bit 'gun-shy', what can you do to get back to making decisions and moving towards more wins? Remember, every big business you know of today … once started as a 'small' business. And every big business still makes mistakes as the company grows larger. When things go wrong, instead of just saying I knew that was going to happen and not learning from it, document what you learned in a BRAIN BOOK or journal and then use this information in the future. The people who do well in their business practice over-value their wins and under-value their losses as a general habit. MATHEMATICAL FORMULA FOR SERENDIPITY - More Swings = More Hits. The longer you take to start something, the less chance you have of actually doing it. Dr Jesse Green was my guest on Episode #12: The Recovery Paradox and after we concluded that particular episode we kept talking and eventually moved onto the subject of branding and his favourite band ACDC and what he believes made ACDC one of the biggest bands in the world. I asked Jesse if he minded if I pushed record and fortunately he said yes because we have captured some absolute gems in regards to branding, brand personality, living up to your brand and how he uses ACDC in his business to connect with his clients. Authenticity is Critical Branding, when done right, creates an emotional response whenever you see that brand, which is why you must always tell the truth. If your brand tells the truth you never have to think about your story. Living Up to The Image Whatever image your brand puts out to the world it has to be one that you can easily live up to. Never make out that you're perfect when you're not. Be honest about your successes and also your failures. If your brand was a person who would it be? Dr Jesse Green is in partnership with his wife and admits that if his dental business was a person it would be Audrey Hepburn. His consulting business, however, has a different brand personality, but in a lot of cases, your brand is going to be an extension of the owners' personality. ACDC has been on brand for 40 years, which is why they have been so successful. If they suddenly started dancing on stage, like a boy band it would just be wrong. It's About Connection Dr Jesse Green openly admits being a mad ACDC fan and if he can he will play their music in his dental business and also at his Practice Max events. Connecting with people, patients, clients and customers is about being real and being human. Naysayers Don't give criticism too much weight and always ask yourself if their comments are valid. Never get hung up on, or try and make changes based on the opinion of one or two people. Instead, listen to the hundred who talk positively. Final Piece of Advice Focus on the fundamentals and understand what drives your business forward. It's all about managing your TIME, ENERGY and PRIORITIES. To learn more, check out Dr Jesse Green's Website and tune into his weekly podcast show The Savvy Dentist.
