Accountability is a very important aspect of self improvement and development. Accountability can come in the form of internal and external. Internal accountability is the systems, checks and measures that we develop to make sure we are doing what we have set out to do. In dental school when you prep a crown or remove caries, a clinical demonstrator comes and checks your work (external accountability), but when you graduate and you are working without supervision - it is the level of self accountability (internal) that will determine the standard you hold yourself too. External accountability is important too, we often join a study group or get a gym buddy to help us stay committed and on track. What is your preferred form of accountability? Are you good at holding yourself accountable or do you rely on others to to help push you to achieve your goals? Ray Dalio often talks about one his favourite principles in life being "Pain + Reflection = Progress" As dentists, we are performing challenging procedures day in and day out. It is not uncommon, specially in our early career, to face adversity and setbacks during various clinical procedure. Complications and unexpected outcomes are not pleasant and really pile onto an already stressful job. It's all too easy to fail at a procedure and decide "that's not for me" and stop doing it all together. In this episode I look into this quote from Ray Dalio and talk about strategies for overcoming procedural setbacks. In this week's episode I summarize what I have learned from Angela Duckworth's book Grit. I recently finished this book and it has become one of my recent favourites and so I am excited to share what I have learned from it. Grit - explores what it takes to become successful in any line of work. Is it talent? Is it hard work? Angela Duckworth concludes the following: talent x effort = skillskill x effort = achievement therefore, talent counts once and effort counts twice. She Concludes that grit is the biggest indicator for success and that grit comes from: Develop a fascination1. Aim for daily improvements2. Compete with who you were yesterday3. Dr. Bruce Freeman is the Director of Patient Experience for dentalcorp, helping dentists across Canada achieve clinical success that results in the best experience for their patients. Bruce is an international lecturer on clinical orthodontics, facial pain, patient experience, and virtual surgical planning. He is the co-director of the Facial Pain Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. He further directs the Wellness Program for dental residents at Mount Sinai Hospital, emphasizing how self-care leads to the best patient care. In the first part of this two-part series, we talk about crushing your side hustle — why it is important to keep your fingers in more than one pie, to allow pivots and to keep options open. We finish up by talking about impostor syndrome and the Dunning-Kruger effect, and how these can affect clinicians in all stages of their career. My goal is to know my patients are really happy. My goal is to know that even if I only have five hundred listeners, every week I get a hundred emails saying, ‘Wow you spoke to me today!’” What good is it if you have fifty thousand listeners and nobody ever writes you? And says “Your podcast does nothing for me. It is like I put it on the background while I am vacuuming.” Conclusion Were you inspired by Dr. Bruce Freeman’s story? Welcome to the Noobie Dentist Mentorship Mini Series. In this weeks episode I talk about habits, what they are, and how we can identify and change them. I got introduced to Habits and the important of habits through The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. In this book Charles talks about the habit loop and how our actions are automated responses to certain cues. We're home bored (cue) and so we head into the kitchen and look through the fridge to find a snack (action) and then we enjoy the snack (reward). This Cue-Action-Reward loop underlies a lot of what we do on the day to day basis. Have a think about all your actions in a given day. Why do you do them? Most of our daily actions are routines that we do without much thought. The first step towards change, development and improvement is to identify this and take steps to change it. Website: http://www.noobiedentist.com Instagram: @noobiedentist Headline Quote [08:14-08:55] My first piece of advice is: just act! Too many of us just think, think, think and overthink and overthinking means nothing is getting done. And you’ve just got to act, you’ve just got to back your gut, and you’ve just gotta have a crack at it. So you can tell I’m a bit of a risk-taker. But I haven’t had any regrets from the risks that I’ve taken because it has always led to me putting myself out of my comfort zone and that’s where the most growth in life happens to all of us— whether that’s personally, professionally, mentally, emotionally, psychologically. You have to get yourself out of your comfort zone. Conclusion Were you inspired by Dr. Jalal Khan’s story and yet, find it difficult to “just act” as he recommends? In this week’s episode I sat down with Dr. Ricky Hamami and Dr. Zeyad Hammad. I met these guys when they were first year dental students at Melbourne Dental school and it has been awesome now see them as fresh grads and noobie dentists. Ricky and Zeyad are from Canada and after completing their studies in Melbourne, have moved back to Toronto where they are both practicing in private practice. I connected with these guys due to our shared passion for entrepreneurship and these guys have taken things to another level. During dental school they launched Dentist2b, an online platform designed to helped dental students study for and crush the Canadian Board Exams. In this interview we talk about their journey into and through dental school, their plans with Dentist2b as well as how their first year of practice is going. Ricky, Zeyad and I have been talking and I am beyond thrilled to have them collaborating with me and the Noobie Dentist Podcast. Ricky and Zeyad will be launching their own podcast series called Mastering Dentistry Series. This podcast series will be running in the same thread as the Noobie Dentist Podcast so you can access the episodes everywhere you currently access the Noobie Dentist Podcast. The Mastering Dentistry Series will offer a fresh perspective from to young and ambitious new grads and I am super excited to hear these episodes. So keep an eye and ear out for the Mastering Dentistry podcast series coming out in the next few weeks. This collaboration is hopefully the start of much bigger projects to come in Canada and as always our main collective goal is to contribute to the dental community. Today’s Interview is with Dr. Jihyon Kim @DiscingQueen on Instagram based in Seattle Washington. This interview was recorded a few months ago prior to me heading over to Seattle to attend Kois and I had the awesome pleasure of meeting up with both Dr. kim and Brandon walker (@prosthabilities) for brunch while I was there. We ran into each other again at DIA a few days later where Dr. Kim taught a great session in injection over molding. As promised I am trying to get back to a more regular schedule with posting up interviews and am working on redesigning the website and logo to freshen things up. The podcast has been a big part of my dental career so far and it has allowed me to form so many close friendships and find so many mentors who have helped me along the way. Dr. Kim is no exception, in this interview we talk about several topics including injection over molding restorative technique, how to stay hungry and continue to grow as your progress in your dental career and much more. Dr. Kim has up to so much since we last spoke for this interview. She has launched her own podcast along with Brandon Walker called Dental Disruptors, she has also launched the discing queen academy and institute of IO. Hello and welcome back for another episode of the Noobie Dentist Podcast. This interview is very important for me, it is with someone who I have admired and looked up to for years and having the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with them for this interview was tremendously exciting and a highlight of my podcasting career so far. Today’s guest is The Bloody Tooth Guy. Many will know of him as one of Instagram OG members and many us have benefited from his outstanding content, education and entertainment around Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. In this interview we talk about his journey into dentistry and OMFS, when and why he started the Bloody Tooth Guy and why he decided to stay anonymous for so long. We also went off track a bit and had a good chat about topics we’re both passionate about, watches and sports. This interview was recorded in February before this Covid pandemic changed everything and that is why it is not discussed during this interview. I hope you enjoy this episode half as much as I did recording it, without further delay, enjoy this interview with the man himself, the bloody tooth guy Bloody Tooth Guy: Instagram: @bloodytoothguy Youtube: Bloody Tooth Guy Sponsor Details: This episode is brought to you by Ivoclar Vivadent Ivoclar Vivadent is one of the world's leading and most innovative dental companies, offering a comprehensive range of products and systems that provide you with new opportunities in dentistry – for even more aesthetic and efficient results and better dental care for patients. This week’s interview was recorded an embarrassingly long time ago but nonetheless it is with two of my good friends who I have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know over several interviews on the podcast and then to meet them in person at DIA few months ago was great. I am of coarse talking about Dr. Davey Alleman and Dr. Ryan Nolan. Both these gentlemen are exceptionally bright individuals and for me it was just fun to facilitate a discussion between these guys on this interview. We cover a lot of topics including different approaches to restorative dentistry, future of restorative materials, role of mouthwashes in caries control and much more. I hope you guys enjoy this interview and my promise is that these episodes will be returning on a more regular interval with some amazing guests including Bloody Tooth Guy and many other amazing dentists. As always, if you have been enjoying this podcast, please be sure to share it with you friends, colleagues and classmates. If you’ve got the time, it would also mean a lot to me if you could head over to iTunes and give the podcast a review and a 5 star rating.
