This week, we bow down and raise up the almighty guitar heroes! The foundation of Rock n' Punk n' Metal is the guitar and the amazing sounds that those who wield them can make. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? There's some kinda voodoo in their hands, and we set off on a journey to raise some of the 70s shredders that you may have forgotten! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old 70's Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Songs this week include: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush – “Electric Reflections Of War / The World Anthem / The Answer” from Live (1978) Rory Gallagher – “Shadow Play” from Photo-Finish (1978) Tommy Bolin – “Teaser” from Teaser (1975) Robert Fripp – “Disengage II” from Exposure (1979) Wild Horses – “The Rapist” from Wild Horses (1980) Dixie Dregs – “Punk Sandwich” from Night Of The Living Dregs (1979) Alice Cooper – “Devil's Food / The Black Widow” from The Alice Cooper Show (1977) Al Di Meola – “Race With Devil On Spanish Highway” from Elegant Gypsy (1977) Check us out on the Boneless Podcasting Network: https://bonelesspodcasting.com/ Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. This episode is a new installment of The Drum Panel, and it's Part TWO of TWO of diving into Chick Corea's Cheap But Good Advice For Playing Music in a Group. I'm joined by good friend of mine Rafa Vidal, who also plays with the band Almost Monday, who are currently killing it, and of course Eric Somers-Urrea is back on the panel. In Part One, we covered numbers 1 through 6. Today, we're finishing the list with numbers 7 through 16, which get into some really good stuff: balance, intention, taste, space, relaxation, ego, and what it actually means to serve the music. As always with The Drum Panel, we're not pretending to have all the answers. We're just using these ideas as a jumping-off point to talk about playing music, being in bands, staying creative, and trying to become better musicians without losing our minds. ——— Chick Corea's Cheap But Good Advice For Playing Music in a Group. Play only what you hear. If you don't hear anything, don't play anything. Don't let your fingers and limbs wander. Place them intentionally. Don't improvise on endlessly. Play something with intention, develop it or not, then end off and take a break. Leave space. Create space. Intentionally create places where you don't play. Make your sound blend. Listen to your sound and adjust it to the rest of the band and the room. If you play more than one instrument at a time, like a drum kit or multiple keyboards, make sure they are balanced with one another. Don't make any of your music mechanically or just through patterns of habit. Create each sound, phrase, and piece with choice, deliberately. Guide your choice of what to play by what you like, not by what someone else will think. Use contrast and balance the elements: high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft, tense/relaxed, dense/sparse. Play to make the other musicians sound good. Play things that will make the overall music sound good. Play with a relaxed body. Always release whatever tension you create. Create space. Begin, develop, and end phrases with intention. Never beat or pound your instrument. Play it easily and gracefully. Create space, then place something in it. Use mimicry sparsely. Mostly create phrases that contrast with and develop the phrases of the other players. We also get into a Rafa's new endeavor called Touch Grooves. Check out more information on that HERE --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today

Chick Corea- Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (Solid State Records) Released December 1968 Now He Sings, Now He Sobs captures Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitouš, and Roy Haynes in a rare moment of complete musical connection and creative freedom. Although somewhat ignored upon release, the album has since become one of the defining piano trio recordings in modern jazz history. Corea's compositions balance angular post-bop lines, open improvisation, rhythmic experimentation, and abstract textures, while Vitouš brings the fearless intensity of a young bass virtuoso and Haynes supplies his legendary snap-crackle rhythmic imagination. Tracks such as “Steps – What Was,” “Matrix,” and the title tune reveal a trio functioning as a single organism rather than a pianist backed by rhythm section players. The music channels the adventurous spirit of Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet and the Bill Evans Trio while pushing the piano trio format into more exploratory territory. This is not casual background jazz or music aimed at mass appeal. It demands attention, openness, and patience. For listeners willing to engage with its intensity and complexity, the album remains one of the true masterpieces of late-1960s modern jazz. (S5-EP 19)
In this episode, Carl interviews legendary Cuban-born jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa who spent over a decade alongside the great Dizzy Gillespie and has performed with icons like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Clark Terry, and Jaco Pastorius. Born into a distinguished Cuban musical family, Ignacio fell in love with jazz at age 11 after his father brought home a Glenn Miller Orchestra record, and he never let go of the dream, even when the regime he lived under made loving American music a punishable offense. Ignacio opens up about what life was really like inside Castro's Cuba: the state surveillance, the religious suppression, the secret nights spent tuning his radio toward Key West to catch Willis Conover and the Voice of America Jazz Hour. He shares the heartbreak of tasting freedom on tours through Spain and knowing he had to return to a country that felt like a prison, and the impossible loyalty that kept him from defecting because two people he loved would have paid the price. When the Port of Mariel finally opened in 1980, his cousin flew from New York and waited in the harbor for a month to bring him home. The conversation moves from the personal to the prophetic as Carl and Ignacio discuss the truth about Marxist regimes that today's young Americans never learned in school, the lessons of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, the four and a half years Ignacio's wife and son were held in Cuba as hostages while he tried to make it in New York, and why he believes the Cuban people deserve nothing less than full freedom. With his memoir The Path I Chose: My Story now available on Amazon, Ignacio offers a powerful testimony of resilience, faith, and the unstoppable pursuit of a dream.

Straight out of Philly is Billy "Shoes" Johnson, one of my favorite drummers of all time on today's show. He was the MAN playing with Santana during the Supernatural tour and the sound on Da Le Yaleo! Billy riffs about his favorite musicians including Stanley Clark, Chick Corea, George Howard, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and Jerry Brown. We are talking music history and Billy was in the jam. Billy pays homage to his parents, siblings and Grandparents for listening to his drumming in his early years. "Put your ego in your back pocket and serve the music"....says Billy....inspired by Steve Gad. Hear the inside story of touring with Santana and going to school off of percussionists Karl Perrazo and Raul Rekow. Their chemistry made Supernatural .....well supernatural! Learn the lesson of creating space with your drumming, especially with Santana. Remember, when you are playing drums, you are playing time. Find space in your time. Think of the big picture and the overall sound. Pay attention and listen. And remember, don't box in your lead guitarist...or anybody....especially if his name is Carlos Santana. A special thanks to our mutual friend, Mr. Dan Ashley, world class broadcaster at ABC, musician, and mentor for connecting us. Charlie Puth joins Switched On Pop in Studio A at Power Station at Berklee NYC, live before a room of current students, ten days after performing the national anthem at Super Bowl 60 and weeks before releasing his fourth album, Whatever's Clever. The conversation is grounded in one question: how do you absorb the music you love and turn it into something that actually sounds like you? Puth traces his national anthem arrangement through a lineage running from Jose Feliciano's 1968 World Series performance to Marvin Gaye's 808-driven 1983 All-Star Game version to Whitney Houston's 1991 Super Bowl rendition. The through-line: citation is letting your influences dissolve into your hands until they become unrecognizable. That principle runs throughout the new record, from the Quincy Jones guitar tone on "Cry" to the Chick Corea quotation buried in "Boy" that Puth didn't realize was there until after writing it. From these podcasts, the actual vinyl LPs played in this show go back to the 1950s – I am enjoying these discs some 70+ years after their production date. Tangible music, always available great quality. … I’m your host, Brian Frederick. WELCOME to this episode of Vinyl … Vibrations. ABOUT TODAY'S PROGRAM ABOUT THE ARTIST Today our featured artist is Jean-Luc Ponty – He is a French JAZZ-ROCK and JAZZ FUSION violinist and composer, born in 1942. Ponty graduated from Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with the PREMIER PRIX the first prize, a great accomplishment. Then he was hired by Orchestra Lamoureux. He also had a side job playing in a college jazz band and he evolved and developed a jazz interest. In his 20's, Ponty went on to play at jazz clubs in Paris as the “JAZZ FIDDLE” role. Ponty was at the right time and the right place. In 1965, the VIOLIN did not have a place in the jazz world or in the jazz sound. Ponty has a unique sound, and he has made a huge impact in JAZZ-ROCK and in JAZZ FUSION. (pause) One characteristic of Ponty's style is his spared use of vibrato. His style favors powerful long notes, with just a trace of vibrato.. Another characteristic is that he plays the electric violin, and thirdly, he uses effects processing. He is truly a modern and pioneering violinist with his jazz and fusion roots starting in the 1960s. In the1970's he collaborated as sideman with FRANK ZAPPA- and with CHICK COREA- and with the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA- resulting in 18 sideman records between those three groups. Before that PONTY had many recording accomplishments – with 8 recordings as LEADER going back to 1964 when he released his premier record [JAZZ LONG PLAYING] In 1967 he played at the MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL, and this landed him a recording contract with the WORLD PACIFIC label. In 1970, he was working with Frank Zappa on the KING KONG album, and working with Elton John on the HONKY CHATEAU album. I was lucky and thrilled to see PONTY live in 1972 at the BROWN SHOE, a bar in the Chicago Old Town neighborhood. He played an electric violin, and had floor pedals with basic effects, and played a mind-boggling 45-minute set of ROCK FUSION music. That was during his MAHAVISHNU-ZAPPA-COREA days. I had my proof, he was the real thing. And now, let's go into the music of Jean Luc Ponty. In today's podcast I review three records of Jean Luc Ponty AS LEADER, his early years, 1970 to 1975. Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. This episode is a new installment of The Drum Panel, and it's Part One of Two diving into Chick Corea's Cheap But Good Advice For Playing Music in a Group. I'm joined by good friend of mine Rafa Vidal, who also plays with the band Almost Monday, who are currently killing it, and of course Eric Somers-Urrea is back on the panel. We start off reacting to a post from Tommy Igoe about drum education and who should really be setting the agenda in lessons. That opens the door to a bigger conversation about intention, listening, and what it actually means to function inside a band. From there, we break down the first six pieces of Chick's advice and what they look like in real life: Play only what you hear. If you don't hear anything, don't play anything. Don't let your fingers and limbs just wander—place them intentionally. Don't improvise endlessly—play something with intention, develop it or not, but then end off, take a break. Leave space—create space—intentionally create places where you don't play. Make your sound blend. Listen to your sound and adjust it to the rest of the band and the room. We also get into a Rafa's new endeavor called Touch Grooves. Check out more information on that HERE --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today
