This brewery has been super lucky as it has grown in a Milwaukee Suburb. What started out as a house the brewer/owner and his family lived in later turned out to have been zoned as a brewery 100 plus years earlier when the house was built. This home brewer who found his passion for beer at a Friday Night Fish Fry at another Milwaukee brewery. Each Friday he would stop in for fish, ask a lot of questions and then spend the weekend brewing. The more he brewed the greater his passion for brewing grew. He finally found a job at a brewery in Illinois that would help him to experience how to run a brewery and help him on his path to his own brewery. With a brewery in his basement, licensed and permitted to sell packaged beer, he started to sell barrel aged beers in bottles out of his house on Saturdays once a month. You had to pre-buy and drive by to pick up your beer during the hours they had specified. If this sounds a little rigid, it is because they started selling beer during the global covid pandemic. If you were going to open a brewery, this was definitely the route that you'd want to take. You could almost say that the planets started to align for this brewer as he and his wife discussed the future of their home, and the business. But I don't want to ruin the story. Listen in as Danielle and Travis talk to this new brewer about his unique entry into the world of brewing and brewery ownership.
After two years of selling bottles from what is essentially his front porch, Rob Brennan opened the doors to his Milwaukee taproom in 2022 - and his rustic farmhouse beers are absolutely worth a trip. For this episode, we drink through four funky and beautiful Supermoon bottles that show artistry beyond what you might expect from such a young brewery. Also, Craig has a bounce in his step (and not just because of the house cultures); Ryan shares some moon facts and comes up with the perfect collaboration; and we're both aching for that Yanni/Bootsy/McD collab to drop. Beers Reviewed Saison Bay View (Farmhouse style saison brewed w/ pilsner, malted spelt and oats) Oaxen (Abbey Style Pale Ale brewed w/ aged hops & fermented w/ Brettanomyces Bruxellensis in neutral French Oak) Epitope (Bière de Coupage - Young saison blended w/ French oak fermented saison aged for 3 years) Marbelle (A blend of mixed culture saisons fermented in French Oak aged 12 months, refermented on Petite Pearl wine grapes & Tart Montmorency cherries)
An oasis in a month of enormous beers, this episode resets our palates to ready us for the remainder of Barrel-Aged December. But that's not to say that saisons don't have quite a few tricks up their sleeves, like the five on this show certainly do. We also are introduced to Milwaukee's Supermoon Beer Company, and Craig grabbed an interview with co-founder Rob Brennan. Additionally, we have surprising strolls through the mall, and Craig tells you where he'll take his glitter. #DrinkSaisons Beers Reviewed Supermoon Beer Company - There Is A Plot (Gin Barrel Blended Saison) Keeping Together - It Was Like A Holiday (Barrel-aged Saison w/ toasted coconut, lemon, orange, and honey) Werk Force Brewing Company - Barrel-Aged Farmhouse Vultures (Saison w/ blackberries and raspberries aged Cabernet Sauvignon barrels) Zero Gravity Craft Brewery - Après Vous (Gin Barrel-Aged Saison) Lawson's Finest Liquids - Saison Aged in Barr Hill Tom Cat Gin Barrels
In this episode, Sam meets Rob Brennan, owner of Supermoon Beer Company. They chat about the start of the brewery, brewing beer with wild yeast, his inspiration from Belgian breweries, beer having a sense of place, his first beer memory, jam bands, working at Penrose Brewing Company, not having to be Michael Jordan to be happy, working with Third Space Brewery, great local produce in Wisconsin, where the name Supermoon comes from, and the fascinating science behind pellicles.

Today’s conversation is another one of those times when I feel profoundly grateful that I get to close the loop with someone that takes me back ten years or more—to when a seed got planted, or a relationship got established, and a decade later we’re able to look back and connect the dots on a story that would have been impossible to imagine playing out the way it did. It’s a reminder for me that I get every so often of the importance of doing good, human, connective things with our work even, and maybe especially if, we don’t know how it’s going to effect someone. But if we do get a chance to see the end result—or at least a milestone—it can be incredibly edifying and soul-confirming. That’s not to say that what Rob Brennan of Supermoon Beer Company is doing is the end of anything—in fact, it’s just about to begin. But as you’ll hear in this conversation, so much of the way in which he tells the story of Supermoon involves telling the story of others, and how they were a kind of spiritual journey to where he ended up—even if many of the people in his life suspected it the whole time. Rob’s journey to Supermoon takes place within a community of people that admired him. My own witness to his journey started at a home-brew party threw with some friends. It was a high concept affair that I’ve never really encountered the likes of since. And it showed how much Rob cares about the beer, but also the context and experience of that beer. He came to Good Beer Hunting’s annual camping trip called Olly Olly, which we host with our friends at Camp Wandawega each fall—although certainly not this fall—in which he met the co-founding team from Penrose Brewing, Tom Korder and Eric Hobbs, and so began his inevitable journey into the professional side of brewing. He was a stop of the Joshua-Bernstein-inspired tour we hosted in Chicago called Homebrew-to-Pro, featuring people who had started breweries, or “gone pro” from their home brewing roots - like Jerry Nelson of Une Anne and Gary Gulley of Alarmist Brewing. But after he cycled out of Penrose and moved north to Milwaukee, it started to seem like the vision for starting a brewery that most of us, his friends had, was maybe also cycling out. Maybe that’s just what we wanted for him—but it wasn’t what he wanted. Maybe we were gonna have to let it go and let him live his life. But a couple months ago—something popped up on his Instagram that looked suspiciously like something that might become a brewery after all. And I can tell you that my heart skipped a beat. It’s about a week away from opening. And the beers are fantastic. This is Rob Brennan of Supermoon, listen in. One quick note before we jump in: this is being recorded during the now worst spike of the pandemic—so me and Rob were being extremely cautious—which means we recorded this outside in the cold, so you will hear some background noise here and there—a breeze, some chirpy birds, a contractor hammering down the street and a car or two driving down the alley we were next to. We did our best dear listener, so thanks for your generosity.

On this episode of Brandstorm, Co-hosts Dan Trzinski and Nancy Christopher are joined by Rob Brennan and Tyler Schmidt, two digital marketing specialists at Platypus Advertising + Design, to talk about geofencing and OTT. We’ll find out the benefits to marketers and how it is used in advertising. What is Geofencing and OTT? Geofencing uses location-based technology, like GPS or WiFi, with mobile devices like your smart phone to serve messages to consumers within a targeted geography or area of high relevance. A geofence is a virtual perimeter around a real-world geography. It could be one or more physical locations like a store, a zip code or even the addresses of those on an email list. When someone with a mobile device enters that targeted location, the geofence acts as a trigger to serve an ad. Its uses in advertising are endless...from promoting a product or service with special discounts or offers and encouraging visitors to go to a special attraction to inviting people to your booth at a trade show or pampering your fans with loyalty rewards, for example. OTT stands for “over-the-top,” the term used for the delivery of film and TV content via the internet, without requiring users to subscribe to a traditional cable or satellite pay-TV service like a Comcast or Time Warner Cable. OTT and Geofencing work well together. You can set up fences within homes with streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire. Advertisers can follow consumers based on specific demographics and criteria no matter what they are watching. Benefits of Geofencing Relevancy and value are the biggest benefits of geofencing, according to Rob. If you have done your homework and know your target audience, it is possible to serve the right message to the right person at the right time. The more defined your target audience is, the more relevant your message will be to them. Value is also significant. Geofencing allows marketers to deliver massive amounts of impressions to targeted audiences at a fraction of cost of traditional media. In the Milwaukee area, the cost is typically between $7 to $10 per thousand, but it will vary in other markets. Targeting Audiences While advertisers can target customers using demographics like age, gender and household incomes, Tyler says geofencing enables you to dive deeper using contextual search, interests and purchasing, browsing and behavioral history. With this criterion, advertisers can get specific. For instance, if you are in a car wreck, you might receive messages from a rental car company, a car dealer, an auto shop, or a personal injury attorney. Privacy Issues Your phone is a GPS unit. While you can limit the number of in-phone apps you are using, you can never be completely off the radar. Smart phones can still be tracked even if all location services and GPS have been turned off. If you want complete privacy, Rob suggests that you buy a burner phone. Questions to Ask Your Geofencing Vendors There are a lot of media outlets, including television stations, radio stations, billboard companies and newspapers, getting into geofencing as an extra revenue stream. There is nothing wrong with this, however you may be spending more for your services going through second, third and fourth parties who are reselling the service. Ad agencies, like Platypus, have direct access to data providers. Secondly, digital marketing in general is not the primary service these media outlets provide. Ad agencies, like Platypus, have digital marketing specialists like Rob and Tyler, whose sole responsibilities are working with you to develop campaign strategies and manage your ad accounts every day. So, here are two important questions to ask your potential vendor: What is your company’s core business? What is your access to the data provider’s inventory? Are there any limits or competitive disadvantages when bidding on the inventory? ROI Geofencing can be easily tracked based on what you need to measure success, be it the number of impressions, click-thru-rates or number of conversions. The real exciting point is that it answers an advertiser’s question of whether a consumer has seen an ad and responded. It can actually track a potential customer going into your business and making a transaction. And geofencing works no matter what size your company is. For as little as $2,000/month, you can achieve amazing results.
