Aerotude: The Story Behind the Whisky Origins of Aerotude Aerotude was born in the skies, inspired by its founder, David Dobson, a pilot who combined his love for whisky with the flavors of his global travels. His vision was to break whisky stereotypes, creating a drink that is easy to enjoy and versatile for a wider audience. The name "Aerotude"is derived from the words Aeroplane and Attitude. In aviation, attitude refers to the orientation of an aircraft in relation to the horizon, but it also reflects a person's way of thinking—making it a clever play on words. Aerotude is crafted for the rule breakers, those who dare to challenge the norm. The Launch Range The Aerotude launch range offers a Taste of Cape Town, featuring four unique variants: - Beachside Days - Ruby Spice - Fynbosity - The Original Flyer Additionally, Aerotude has introduced "Karoo Kiss", a 100% Karoo Agave spirit. Spotlight on Beachside Days Currently the bestselling whisky spirit aperitif, "Beachside Days" is known for its smooth and refreshing profile. It is infused with "Naartjie, Pineapple, and Ginger", making it the "Ladies' Choice". This variant pairs well with tonic (similar to a Gin & Tonic) or lemonade, though many also enjoy it neat due to its smoothness. How to Enjoy Beachside Days Aerotude embraces the philosophy: "Shake It, Mix It, Share It – Whisky Your Way!" Beachside Days can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed with tonic or lemonade for a refreshing twist. Crafting Aerotude Aerotude's range is made using a "3-Year Single Grain Whisky", meaning the whisky comes from a single distillery. The maturation process involves finishing the whisky in "American Medium Toast Oak Casks". For "The Original Flyer", the whisky undergoes an additional finishing process in "French Oak, Cape Brandy, and Sherry Casks", enhancing its smoothness and flavor complexity. Behind the Scenes Aerotude is proudly produced in "Woodstock, Cape Town". The brand remains committed to authenticity, infusing its whisky with "only natural ingredients", ensuring no artificial flavors are used. Hard Truth Distilling Co. began distilling in 2015 in the small upper rooms of Big Woods Pizza Co. in downtown Nashville, Indiana. The tiny craft distillery quickly grew, and, by 2017, construction had begun on a new facility set on a rolling, wooded, 325-acre property about a mile away from Hard Truth's original home. That property became the gorgeous Hard Truth campus, with the Hard Truth Tours & Tastings Center being the first building to open its doors to guests at the very end of 2017. The following summer, the Restaurant at Hard Truth opened to hungry guests. And, in the fall of 2018, Hard Truth Distilling Co. made the move to its brand new, state-of-the-art, sweet mash distillery, where it's been producing Hard Truth spirits ever since. Over the past few years, our teams have continued to develop the property that surrounds the Hard Truth distillery with new tours and activities, festivals, and a major expansion at Hard Truth on the Rocks — a terraced, outdoor area with a stage for live music, food truck, and bar that operate seasonally. The Hard Truth distilling team continues to work diligently, crafting a range of premium spirits, including popular crowd-pleasers like Maple Bourbon Cream and Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum and, of course, remarkable sweet mash whiskeys — the first of which, Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey, was released in November 2021. Hard Truth Distilling Co. is part of the BWQOHT, Inc. family of brands, which also includes Big Woods Restaurants and Quaff ON! Brewing Co. Sweet Mash Bourbon Sweet Mash Bourbon marks a new chapter for Hard Truth. When we built our still in 2018, Bourbon was the first whiskey we barreled. It's the one we've been waiting for the longest, and now, it's here — Bourbon, authentically made from grain-to-glass by Hard Truth in Brown County, Indiana. Nothing, from start to finish, was left to chance. From high-quality Indiana grains, our continuous column still custom-made by Vendome Copper & Brass Works, and barrels specifically produced for each unique mash bill — every step of our bourbon-making process was pioneered by Master Distiller Bryan Smith to bring you a whiskey unlike any other. Why sweet mash? Every batch of Hard Truth Sweet Mash Whiskey begins with entirely fresh ingredients, known as the sweet mash process. Where sour mash reuses a portion of each previous batch, it also mutes some of the flavor. By using sweet mash, we're able to highlight the complexity and pleasant flavors from our grains and reach the peak flavor in our new, charred American oak barrels. French Oak Harvest Rye French Oak Harvest Rye is the third release in a limited, four-part, collectible series from Hard Truth Distilling Co. and Mellencamp Whiskey Company. The unique mash bill was first featured in the original Harvest Rye (fall 2023) and is composed of 100% Indiana-grown rye and corn. This expression, rested in new, charred French Oak barrels, offers additional dimension to that first release. The French Oak shifts the flavor dynamic, leaning into and highlighting fruit-forward notes within the whiskey. Tonight, our wine-tasting duo takes part in our first-ever head-to-head challenge. We will examine the differences between the two wines and help you decide which wine is right for you. Pinot Noir is the wine that made Burgundy France famous, but what about Pinot from the New World, specifically, California and Oregon. Oregon is known for its Pinot, and its cooler climate has perfect growing conditions. Oregon Pinot is known for its earthiness, minerality, and fruitiness. California Pinot is often a slightly heavier body, darker, and more fruit-forward wine. Tonight, we taste:1. 2019 Talbott, Kali Hart Pinot Noir. https://www.talbottvineyards.com/ Purchased from Costco for $17.49. James Suckling gave this wine a 93. Wine Enthusiast rated it a 92. It comes from Monterey, Central Coast, California. Estate-grown, fruit-driven with just a touch of French Oak. Wine Enthusiast said aromas of cedar, grilled strawberry, and cracked pepper. Flavors of mace and cumin.2. 2021 Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir. https://www.wvv.com/ Purchased from Costco for $17.00. This wine comes from the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The Vineyard has iron-rich volcanic soils. They thin the grapes to increase the intensity of the grapes. It has raspberry, strawberry preserves, cardamom spice, and earth aromas. Another source says aromas of dried dark cherries, cinnamon, and cranberry. Taste of cherry, leather, tobacco, and fresh acidity. Ph of 3.33 - 3.50. Stainless steel barrels are used for fermentation. Next week we will have a Bargain Hunt Show looking for great tasting white wines under $10. The wines will include:1. 2022 Bouchard Aine & Fils, Chardonnay, purchased at Costco for $9.99.2. 2023 Famille Perrin, Cotes Du Rhone from Costco for $9.99.3. 2023 Vignobles Lacheteau, Sauvignon Blanc purchased at Trader Joe's for $6.99.

03:35.00 - You mentioned different types of wood barrels - French, American, Hungarian, etc. You did a great job breaking the differences down between these. My question is that under these types of wood - like French Oak - are their different barrel types, construction materials, etc that make each French oak barrel different? And how do these things change the wine? 10:53.00 - We love the MTGA Pinot Gris at our house. You mentioned it was a 60/40 split on wood vs stainless aged (I think that was the ratio). Is the difference in the product coming out of these two aging methods a stark one? Or is it not as noticeable as you might think? 17:02.00 - Have you gotten a chance to experiment with a concrete amphora yet? I agree they sound like a pain to clean. Wondered if you had tried anything with those yet in the last year since that first episode aired. 20:38.00 - What effect will the Vintage Wine Estate bankruptcy have on the industry? 28:24.00 - After the "shopping for additives" episode why do you mention multiple items as being "okay" but you would not use them?
Forbes once described Jean-Charles Boisset as “The James Bond of Wine,” a title befitting of the Frenchman, who embodies elegance and sophistication. But at his core, Jean-Charles is fond of nourishing others and sharing his passion for high-quality beverage and food with anyone he encounters. Jean-Charles and his sister Nathalie lead the current generation of his family's business, Boisset Collection, a global company that owns dozens of wineries across the world, including in California, France, England and India. According to Forbes, Boisset Collection generates annual sales of around $200 million and has an estimated value of $450 million. While his primary business is wine, Jean-Charles is also a spirits entrepreneur whose latest project has reunited him with The Beckmann Gonzalez family, known for their extensive history in tequila, in particular as the creators of Jose Cuervo. The partnership yielded Casa Obsidiana, an ultra-premium tequila brand that unites the collective expertise of its founding team. Created using estate-grown, 100% Blue Weber agave, the tequila is aged in French Oak wine barrels that once contained Chardonnay from a Boisset Collection winery in Napa Valley. Available in Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo expressions, the tequilas are bottled in Mexican-made hand-crafted ceramic bottles and feature the brand's namesake obsidian stone. In this episode, Jean-Charles speaks about how he identifies opportunities to innovate and why he emphasizes taste, not trends, when planning new business ventures and developing new products. He also discusses lessons from prior experience in the spirits industry and how historical context is at the heart of the company's communication strategy. Show notes: 0:35: Interview: Jean-Charles Boisset, Co-Founder, Casa Obsidiana – Jean-Charles talks about his childhood dream to become a professional soccer player and why he chose to join the family business instead and why he doesn't live with regret. He also shares his observations on the current market for beverage alcohol and state of drinking culture, how premiumization impacts innovation, how to create “extraordinary” products and why he stresses the importance of affordability and accessibility. He also explains how the history of the Beckmann Gonzalez family is at the core of Casa Obsidiana's brand story, the impact of/influence on finishing the tequila in wine barrels and why he and his team thought the artisanally-inspired bottles would be “a wild success or abject failure.” Brands in this episode: Casa Obsidiana, Lunazul, Jose Cuervo

Tasting Notes: I didn't think I would love this whiskey, but boy was I wrong. This is a 12yr old Buffalo Trace aged in French oak barrels. Some other French oak whiskies tend to be overpowering, but this was just the right amount of silkiness, mouthfeel and richer vanilla and red fruit flavor that I love. It somehow manages a sweet mouthfeel without tasting sweet and also manages a fairly heavy oak profile without tasting too heavy. Nougat, caramel, vanilla and a very finely wrought and subtle oak note throughout. Label is kind of a mess, but the whiskey inside is fantastic. Very elegant.
Over the past few years, Over the past few years, several Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) brands have collaborated with various spirits companies over the past few years, some utilizing barrel-aged tobacco. In 2022, Macanudo became one of the STG brands using barrel-aged tobacco for its Macanudo Estate Reserve Flint Knoll. For this project, Macanudo engaged with the Napa Valley-based winery Flint Knoll. Compared to other STG barrel-aged collaborations, this project was unique because Macanudo collaborated with a winery rather than a distillery. Additionally, the tobacco aging barrels used were made of French Oak and were previously used in aging Flint Knoll's single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. PCA 2024 Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-sqh

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes you on a ride to Lexington, Kentucky and introduces listeners to RD1 Spirits. He chats with Co-Founder and Owner, Barry Brinegar. Barry and Big Chief sit down in front of a live audience at Longhorn Liquor in Beaumont, Texas to discuss how RD1 Spirits got started and discuss the history of the name. They also sample five single barrels with the help of the audience and pick a barrel to be released at Longhorn Liquor locations across Southeast Texas. They start the show with a dram of RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and the Big Man gets a hint of Corn Pops on the nose from this one. They finish the first portion of the show with an RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished with French Oak that seems to tame the spice. In the second half, Barry and Big Chief start with the RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in Brazilian Amburana cask which the Big Man said was finished to perfection. They then move on to the RD1 Maple Finished Bourbon which is spiced dessert in a glass. To finish the show Big Chief invites the audience to help him pick a barrel from five different expressions. A barrel strength Amburana finish won the day. This ride on The Whiskey Trip gave 30 whiskey enthusiasts an experience they had never had in picking a barrel. Cheers!

The trend of cask finished whiskey is here to stay. It's run rampant over the past few years to the point that every single company has one. But how are barrels sourced? How many times can a barrel be used before it longer gives off those different flavors? To answer these questions and a lot more, I've invited Jessica Ann from H&A Barrel Management on the show. We've had the pleasure of knowing Jessica for many years. She recently got herself into the market of brokering barrels for different cask finishes. Jessica gives us the low-down on wine and exotic oak finishes and how difficult they can be to attain. There's a lot to break down such as types of oak, toast level, and if cooperage reputation has any prestige. With the wide variety available, we're going to see even more trends hit the market soon. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks if Pappy is a NDP. How did you and Fred connect? How many times can a barrel be used for wine aging? Why is French Oak the preferred type for wine? If I need barrels, what do you have readily available? What does STR mean? How are different barrels valued? How many times can those barrels be re-used? In the used barrel market are there cooperages that have more prestige? What are some of the newest barrels people want that aren't common? Do customer's ever request different toast and char levels? How do you properly read a wine barrel? Talk about your barrel leasing program. How do you find out about the various oak species available? @bourboninsider Support this podcast on Patreon
Tom Dunne was joined by Jean Smullen, Chris Wasser, Sarina Bellissimo for another edition of movies and booze, with thanks to Marks and Spencer.Today's wines are listed below:2022 Ben Marco Plata Special Edition Malbec €12.00The grapes for the Ben Marco Plata are grown in Uco Valley in Mendoza at an altitude of 1,050 metres (3,445 feet) above sea level, which is what gives this wine its elegant finish. It was aged in French oak barrels for 8 months. With red fruit aromas and a hint of mocha there is also a lovely spiciness from the oak ageing. It bursts into life when you taste it, red cherry with a hint of chocolate and ripe firm tannin, the perfect wine to serve with beef. It is also a good match for hard cheeses like Parmesan, Emmental, or goats cheese.Stockists: Selected Dunnes Stores (30), Nationwide 2019 Portia Crianza €18.00This superb red is made from 100% Tempranillo aged in French Oak. This is a serious high-quality red wine, the judges tasting notes state: Ruby red in colour with a hint of garnet, lively juicy fruits. An inviting nose of vanilla and black fruits with good structure, soft tannin, and length. Best in Show!! Easy to see why this is the overall winning wine. Superb! Stockists: Independent Off Licences, Nationwide

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief chats with Phil Brandon, Founder and Head Distiller, of Rock Town Distillery . This craft distillery located in the heart of downtown Little Rock, Arkansas produces some great whiskey that has never been done before. Phil takes the Big Man on a journey through his distilling story while also introducing him to unique mash bills that make this distillery stand out. Brandon's whiskey trip has taken him from the big hardwoods of Arkansas so that he understands where his barrels will come from in the future, to the farms of Arkansas, so he knows the hard work of the farmers who grow his grains. In the first half Big Chief and Brandon start with the Arkansas Bourbon which has a mash bill of 82% corn, 9% wheat, 9% malted barley - right up the big man's palate. The second expression they taste is an Arkansas Rice Bbourbon. Arkansas is the number one state for rice production. The rice gives it an extra sweetness. The last expression of the first half is an Arkansas Single Malt. In the second half Phil introduces Mike to their Rock Town Column Still Collection. This collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company will help the company expand their reach across America. They sip on the small batch and then a toasted French Oak expression – a toasted, wheated bourbon to be exact! This ride on The Whiskey Trip highlights David Pickerel's legacy of craft distilleries he helped create across the American landscape. Cheers!
James came back to visit with us, (he may end up on the payroll when we start making money). The man really likes cryptids. He's going to tell us all about Skinwalkers including a bit about the famous SkinWalker Ranch. That place has some stuff going on! Really curious about the mesa and the Triangle area. Guess we will have to wait until they figure it out. We discuss Native American lore about the Skinwalker and the different types from each tribe. Apparently, they're common to many of the tribes with different names and possibly different traits. Tonights beverage is Tram-Mosa, a Virginia white wine. Henry requested wine for tonight so I obliged. It's a bit sweet which he likes. Tram-Mosa is from one of our happy places, Ashton Creek Vineyards. Made from 100% Va grown Traminette grapes, fermented on the skins & aged 3 months in French Oak barrels. Lightly sparkling. Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens Full Details from Oak & Eden: Oak & Eden's proprietary In-Bottle Finishing technique was just the start of the founders' vision. Rooted by the innovative spire, the brand developed Whiskey Customizer, becoming the first national spirit brand to offer single bottle customization for the masses. Whether you're an avid whiskey fan wanting to experiment or looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, Whiskey Customizer has a little something for everyone. To kick off the experience, customers are invited to build their custom bottle by selecting a desired whiskey base out of Bourbon, Four Grain Bourbon, Wheated Bourbon or Rye. Each base has been aged a minimum of three years. All four whiskey bases are available in 90 proof and 114 proof. After selecting the base and proof, builders may then choose the preferred wooden spire to be infused or inserted into the base with no infusion. Wood options include an American Oak spire, lending a sweet and toasty finish, or a French Oak spire, lending a floral and peppery finish. Builders can also select their spire to be infused with Coffee, Vanilla, Grapefruit Liqueur, Orange Liqueur, Pineapple Liqueur, Blackberry Liqueur, Cabernet, Port Wine, Rum, Honey, or Maple Syrup which is then inserted into the bottle. Oak & Eden plans to add to its infusion options, introducing seasonal and limited l-batch options quarterly, making the possibilities with Whiskey Customizer truly limitless. As a final step, customers can make the bottle theirs by personalizing the label or adding someone else's as a great gifting option. Shipping is available nationwide! We recommend that the bottle sit for 3 weeks after arrival to guarantee that the in-bottle finishing process has been fully completed. How much influence does the barrel have on the whiskey you drink? If you talk to a lot of people in the industry you will get a rough estimate of 70% or more flavor gets extracted from the barrel. We've had a few coopers on the show to talk about process, and even today's guest was back on Episode 346. We were so amazed at some of his research we wanted him to come back on the show to talk about more mind blowing stave science. Andrew Wiehebrink is the Director of Spirits Research and Innovation for Independent Stave Company. That means he leads up all the cool advancements on where barrel trends are heading. We talk about the current barrel shortage and if toasted products are the reason to blame, where the future of oak alternatives are heading, and why there is a trend of distilleries moving tog Char 1 vs Char 4. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about warming up your palette. Can you give us a refreshed on how you got into whiskey? How is ISC looking at the current barrel shortage crisis? Is wood growth a problem in getting new barrels? Is there a labor shortage in cooperages? How much has toasted barrels lead to a barrel shortage? Can you explain the seasoning process once again and how that effects the overall flavor? Are you all experimenting with oak alternatives? Why does French Oak have more peaks and valleys for the maturation process? Maker's really pioneered the custom staves but is anyone else doing anything to that level? Why is there a trend of moving towards Char 1 vs Char 4? Does your research show an optimal time of the year to pull barrels? Is there a trend of using smoked barrels? Support this podcast on Patreon
Guests:Kevin Meeker, Bill Elmer, Mike Dalewitz, Jesse Bongiovi Synopsis:This week we're focused on all the greatest hits--meaning some amazing restaurateurs who have adapted their venues (and menus) to come up with delightful dining options that everyone can enjoy! And we love to wet your appetite, so we're plating up those heavenly dishes with a rosé that everyone's raving over!We first spoke with Keg & Kitchen's Chef Bill Elmer and Owner, Kevin Meeker. Although the two have known one another for years, this is the first time Elmer has worked for Meeker. These two friends have years of experience and familiarity with one another, which lends itself to scrumptious results that patrons of Keg & Kitchen can enjoy. Chef Elmer, who is familiar with Owner Meeker's famed Philadelphia Fish Company, designed specials based on the former PFC's menu. Those specials are currently available throughout Lent, Easter, and some will be integrated into their Spring & Summer seasonal menu too. Look for those specials, along with daily Happy Hour options (including General Manager Matthew Marks inventive cocktails and mocktails), and other exciting events happening at Keg & Kitchen!Afterwards, we had an in-depth discussion with Attorney turned Restaurateur, Mike Dalewitz. Dalewitz, who is the Founder of 618 Hospitality Group and Co-Owner of The Borscht Belt, joined us on Food, Farms, & Chefs to chew over how his career path ventured into the hospitality business. The highly driven, and self-motivated entrepreneur had a knack to fish out a niche; one of which led him to meet Co-Owner and Chef, Nick Liberato. And a love of all things delicatessen bloomed, opening The Borscht Belt in Stockton, NJ. Due to certain circumstances the former location of the Borscht Belt needed to be closed, but the pair are excited to announce the launch of The Borscht Belt in Newtown, PA this coming April, and The Borscht Belt Museum will be launching this month in Ellenville, NY along with hosting the first Borscht Belt Fest this summer!Lastly, we hear from Jesse Bongiovi--yes, that name should sound familiar--who invited all of us to spring into rosé season with his latest vintage of Hampton Water. Creative minds must think alike, seeing as Co-Owners Jesse, his father Jon Bon Jovi, and long-time friend Ali Thomas joined forces to create a Rosé with Vintner Gerard Bertrand. Their 'pink juice' was inspired after years of traveling with Jesse's father and indulging in Rosé, oftentimes during visits to the Hampton's. And this is not some insipid label being brandished by someone famous; the Rosé has been awarded 90-Points for every vintage produced since its inception. Hampton Water Rosé is a blend of 60% Grenache; 15% Cinsault; 15% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah which is then fermented inside French Oak barrels--it tastes wonderful on your palate, or feel free to create cocktail using Hampton Water Rosé as your base.

Christi & Alex get into a bargain with the devil & taste wine from Napa Valley's Youngest AVA. (BTW- An "AVA" is an American Vinticultural Area- which is a geographically defined chunk of land used for growing grapes that has been defined as such because of it's special attributes. The soil, the sun, the elevation, the shape of the land- all of what makes the grapes grown there special.) All of which part of what makes this wine it's own, unique thing! So pop in the earbuds, pull open a bottle, and let's Drink Something AMAZING!Winemaker NotesAromas of fresh herbs, pungent cedar, and forest swirl in the glass with more delicate floral notes, black pepper, bittersweet chocolate, and crushed rock On the palate, a little brambly-vine quality clings to blackberry flavors, and warmly spiced dark plum is layered with fresh herbs for a lively, sweet-savory balance. Fine tannins yield satisfyingly rich, velvety textures, while vibrant acidity keeps you coming back for another sip.Faust Winery ( @FaustWines )At Faust, we seek to express the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and the diversity of the Napa Valley by sourcing from our estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford as well as from small lots on Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. After two years of selling bottles from what is essentially his front porch, Rob Brennan opened the doors to his Milwaukee taproom in 2022 - and his rustic farmhouse beers are absolutely worth a trip. For this episode, we drink through four funky and beautiful Supermoon bottles that show artistry beyond what you might expect from such a young brewery. Also, Craig has a bounce in his step (and not just because of the house cultures); Ryan shares some moon facts and comes up with the perfect collaboration; and we're both aching for that Yanni/Bootsy/McD collab to drop.
