On this week's show ask the question: “What Happened to DLNA Technology” We also read your emails and the week's news. Also, say hi to Evelyne, our virtual news reader. News: Plex warns users to update systems immediately after detecting worrying security issue Samsung's $30K Micro RGB TV Is Here Sling TV launches single day, weekend, week-long pass options Apple's new ‘Charismatic' smart home OS is getting set to take on Alexa and Google What Happened to DLNA Technology? DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology, once a popular standard for sharing media like photos, videos, and music between devices on a home network, has largely faded from prominence. Here's a concise overview of what happened: Peak Popularity (2000s–Early 2010s): DLNA, introduced in 2003, enabled seamless media streaming between certified devices like TVs, computers, smartphones, and gaming consoles. It was widely adopted by manufacturers (e.g., Sony, Samsung, LG) and supported by software like Windows Media Player. By 2010, millions of devices were DLNA-certified, with a focus on interoperability and ease of use. Decline in Relevance: Rise of Proprietary Ecosystems: By the mid-2010s, companies like Apple (AirPlay), Google (Chromecast), and Amazon (Fire devices) pushed proprietary streaming protocols that integrated tightly with their ecosystems, offering smoother user experiences and cloud-based features DLNA lacked. Complexity and Inconsistency: DLNA's interoperability was hampered by inconsistent implementation across devices. Some devices supported only specific file formats or had clunky interfaces, frustrating users. Shift to Cloud and Apps: The rise of streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube shifted media consumption to app-based, cloud-driven platforms. DLNA's focus on local network sharing became less relevant as users prioritized internet-based content. Emerging Standards: Technologies like Miracast, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth offered simpler or more versatile alternatives for device-to-device connectivity, further eroding DLNA's niche. DLNA's End (2017): The DLNA organization officially dissolved in 2017, ending certification and development. While some devices and software (e.g., Plex, VLC) still support DLNA for backward compatibility, it's no longer a focal point for manufacturers or consumers. Current Status: DLNA remains functional on older devices, but it's largely been supplanted by modern protocols and platforms. For example, smart TVs now rely on app ecosystems or protocols like Google Cast. Some enthusiasts still use DLNA for local media servers, but it's a niche use case. From our archives (June 2012) What's missing? So if you've tried any of the DLNA servers out there, you've probably seen how bare they are. With so many consumer electronics devices supporting DLNA playback, it seems a really good DLNA server would sell like hotcakes. Here's what we think the perfect DLNA server would do. Support Transcoding. Some DLNA Servers support transcoding, but not all of them. Transcoding allows the server to change the format of the video your watching or song you're listening to to something that the player can actually play back. Otherwise you'll get a bunch of failures trying to play back stuff like DivX and Xvid. Support Cover Art. Most DLNA servers will just grab a video frame out of a movie file and display it as a thumbnail. Why not replace that with the actual cover of the movie? They're easy to find online. It might take a little more setup up front to get all the covers downloaded and in the right place, but it would be worth it. Categorize videos. A few of the servers support a limited amount of categorization for video files, but what you'd really like to do is tag a movie with a genre, a year, rating, actors, director, producer, etc. and use any of those pieces of information to find the right movie. Built-in DVD backup. Consumers want a way to backup their movies. DVDs don't last forever. Allow a user to create a backup copy of their DVD on a hard drive. Of course they'll also be able to watch it from any network connected DLNA player, but that's just a slight benefit of the nifty backup feature. Of course, if you could then provide the built-in... Connection to IMDB. Allow users to automatically populate cover art and meta data info by selecting the correct movie from an online database like IMDB. This would greatly simplify the chore of adding movies to a video library. While this tends to be a one-time event (once per movie at least), it can be painful and tends to wear on you after a while. Support online sources. Right now PlayOn is the only server we've found that supports online video sources. It, however, doesn't support local sources. It looks like that functionality will be coming soon, but the two ideas need to merge for a really great product.
When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem, he found that the people had slipped from God's ways to their own ways, forsaking the house of God. Standing on scripture and history, Nehemiah's reformations restored the sanctity of God's house, service in the temple, submission to the Sabbath and the standards of God. Today's church needs the same reformation to return back to God's ways and stand on His word. Acting on a principle that God's house will be respected, Nehemiah threw out the enemy who was living in God's house. We show respect for God's house today by 1) recognizing that what we do for God and the way we do it matters more than just getting a job done, and 2) leaving behind our baggage of how things “ought” to be done in God's house. These ideas will not be tolerated; they will be thrown out. VF-2017 Nehemiah 13:1-9 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. The way we remember the people of God is important. The people of God in Nehemiah's day remembered the man of God, David, for what he did to change the course of religion in Jerusalem. In Nehemiah's day, a tithe of the people was selected to live in Jerusalem. They were honored to be in the holy city, to repopulate it and to serve God there. The church today needs to revive the same heart of servitude, and when it does, great things in God's work will be accomplished. Through Nehemiah 9:26-31 and Psalm 106 we have a mirror to show us the wickedness of fallen man and our own sinning ways. Why then, if God knows and sees all this, does He forgive? The book of Judges shows God's sovereignty to choose whom He will to accomplish His purposes. Jephthah is the example of one rejected in man's eyes, but chosen by God as a savior for the people. A mini excursion from Nehemiah into Judges to look at three saviors that delivered the children of Israel. Each savior was raised up by God for a purpose and for a time, and each of them was unique and different from one another. The house of God is designed to demonstrate His will, His day, His way and His work. The people of Nehemiah's day made a pledge of commitment to His House and yet even they fell away after time. This is a call to us today at Faith Center to renew and keep our commitments to the House of our God, putting Him first through our service and giving. We are enabled by God to keep our commitments when we abide in His Word, and when we do, He will never forsake us. Through the Bible God put the gift of His Spirit in human conduits to instruct, to guide, and equip them for service. We see this with the people in Nehemiah's day, with the 70 elders of Israel, Bezaleel, and many others throughout the Old and New Testament. God's still placing the same Spirit in us today. It's not something weird or mystical, but a gift which helps us to grow in the knowledge of Him. A close study of the Hebrew reveals God's plural forgiveness's, demonstrated by the fact that He never forsook the children of Israel despite their continuous rebellion. God's in control. He showed that He's in control of history by His prophecies and use of a heathen king, Cyrus, and He's also in control of your life and mine. The challenge of this message is to consider our ways. Are we striving against God's purposes, talking back to the Potter and saying “He can't with me” or, “What could I possibly do?” Or are we looking at the pattern of God's way with Cyrus and saying, “Lord, Thy will be done. Nehemiah was God's chosen person and because of that he had a burden for God's work. He earnestly prayed for God's people and God's place, and his prayer was answered. As His children, we too need to be prayerful, specifically towards the church of Jesus Christ. Confusion surrounding the emergence and development of Christianity has fueled a great deal of tension between Jews and Christians in our present time. A deep dive into the book of Acts helps us to fill in the gaps and shed light on the early Christian church which in its genesis was made up of Jewish converts who came to view Christ as the Messiah. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the epicenter of Christianity. Jesus foretold of His Death and Resurrection on the 3rd day. There are internal evidences that the New Testament writers were honest reporters of Christ's scourging and crucifixion, His burial, and His appearances after the Resurrection. Understanding why Jesus had to die has many nuances that can be found throughout the Bible. The consequence for our fallen, sin-stained condition is death, but Jesus died as a substitute sacrifice in our place. We escape the curse of the law through His finished work at the cross and the barrier between us and God is gone. We are still sinners, but those who are in Christ will not receive God's wrath. A careful study of God's covenants shows us that God's chosen people are not limited to one singular group of people called “Jews.” The history of God's chosen people shows us that no one has ever kept His covenant. The congressional bill H.R. 6090 references the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, which alludes to the words of Jesus Christ as anti-Semitic. That is impossible because Jesus was a Jew. He criticized the religious leaders of Israel for their failure to teach and lead the people. They rejected Him because they saw Him as a threat to their power. The church of today needs to speak the truth from the Bible without fear or shame and not be intimidated by critics that haven't read the Bible. Celebrating 20 years of ministry, this message looks back at a life lived by faith and the making of a child of God. Hebrews 11 memorializes those in the Old Testament that overcame challenges by faith in God. They are to be examples to us to continue in the faith and stay connected to God and His word. Our attitude towards money says a lot about who we are and how we will be memorialized by God. On one hand, the Bible is replete with references to greed and greedy people. The Passover was instituted in the Old Testament as a remembrance of the deliverance of God's children out of Egypt. It was kept until the last Passover, celebrated by Jesus before His death and resurrection. Then Christ became our Passover through His finished work at the cross. There is no scripture to support the worship of Mary, or the doctrine of the immaculate conception of Mary which paints her as without original sin. So how did the Catholic church manage to convince a whole sea of people that this is the truth? Are Christians just imitating the mother and child worship that is found in every single culture? The answers to these questions might make you angry, but the truth will set you free. A look at church history shows that the date of December 25th came out of pagan traditions that had nothing to do with Christ. The birth of Christ was the fulfillment of a set time. A study of the Old Testament shows there are no feasts or set times that occur in the month of December. In order to fulfill the prophecy of God's set time, Christ had to be born in September. A study of scripture, secular history and astronomical events provide evidence of a September birth and provide a window of time for the year it occurred. When we examine the biblical and historical data, it's very clear that December 25th is not Christ's birthday. While we're not obliged to give an exact date, we can narrow it down to a window and a time: more likely a September date between 7 and 6 B.C., fitting into the set times of God. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke provide different details about the birth and early childhood of Christ. By looking to evidence from the Bible and a variety of external sources, we can begin to learn the truth about His birth. The accounts tell us where He was born and if you read carefully, what time of the year it was. Jesus was not born at Christmas and the Magi did not visit Him at birth, but later when He was a young child.
