No outward sign, like that of circumcision, can fix you if your heart is not close to God. Colossians 2:6 is the perfect text to show us that the modern-day evangelist's altar call, inviting us to "receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior" is actually quite blasphemous! The need for covering for sin goes back as far as Adam and Eve, where an animal had to be slain to cover them.  The book of Leviticus spells out that the only atonement for sin is through sacrifice and the spilling of blood.  Each of the sacrifices was a type that pointed to Christ.  When Christ fulfilled the law with His sacrificial death and His Resurrection, the need for blood to be spilled stopped.  Those who do not look to Christ for redemption cannot be cleansed by good deeds or ceremonies, because there is no salvation apart from Christ.  Those who do look to Him in faith have an eternal inheritance. Continuing the excursion on angels, it is clear that there are many references to angels through the Scriptures. The elect, un-fallen angels that remain holy and dedicated to God carry out His will, deliver messages, and give guidance and help to humans as His representatives. As background to the teaching Paul had to do to counter the false doctrine of angel worship, we can look to the Scriptures, especially the Pentateuch, to make sure we understand the nature and role of angels. Doing some detective work outside the text of Colossians 1:13 where "the kingdom of his dear Son" is referenced, we can better understand what that should mean in its magnitude for us.
