Sin is a universal disease for mankind, and we are in an ongoing process of coming short of the glory of God. Though it may not be as clear in the King James English, the text of Psalm 22 in the Hebrew clearly depicts the suffering of Christ. Although the psalm was written by David, the details cannot possibly refer to his own suffering: it is a prophetic picture of Christ written a thousand years before it became history. In the Old Testament, in order to be made right with God, there was a temporary way into God's presence once a year on the day of atonement. It is important to study the Old Testament to understand how God unfolds the revelation of Christ in the New Testament. Even a little pride can be enough to prevent growth. Pride manifests itself as presumption before God, love of human praise, inability to say "I was wrong", and a spirit that appears to possess all knowledge.
