YWGO, today, I'll be sharing a recent coaching call I had with my new coaches, Sage and Sandi of Higher Running. I've been following each of them for years, so when it came time to start thinking about how to approach a PB attempt I'd like to make for the London Marathon, they were my first choice of coaches to work with. I'm about halfway through my training for London, so I thought this would be a good time to check in with them to talk about how things are going. We'll talk about tough workouts, being uncomfortable, and nutrition. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Sage and Sandi. 0:00 intro 0:31 How did they write the plan 4:24 Why I Wanted a Coach 8:48 How I'm dealing with the faster shorter reps 12:35 I don't like longer reps 15:23 A workout is just information (make clip) 17:53 Pivoting to more race-specific work 21:56 What's the point of running between easy and marathon effort in a long run 25:38 How Many Gels 31:41 Pros get 8 bottles per race 35:03 Should I be taking in salt during a race? If so, what was your experience like? -How did you initially get into coaching? What has the process been like of owning an online-based coaching business and getting to help other athletes along their running journeys? -You've been featured on GoDaddy's GoForth Series and shared that freedom is one of your top values. Can you share more about the "why" behind starting your business and what freedom means to you? -What is it like owning a business with your partner? Any advice/words of wisdom to those looking to do something similar? -You've discussed the importance of discussing body image in sport, pay equality, and many other not-often-discussed topics. The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) has historically been a place for ultra runners to test their skills and endurance against the best in the world and a beautiful and challenging location for a long unsupported run. It's a classic Fastest Known Time (FKT) Route and the Canyon is a place of unparalleled beauty. The route is approximately 42 miles from South Kaibab Trail to North Kaibab Trail and back to South Kaibab with almost 11,000 ft of climbing. The long descents and ascents have beaten many a runner into a "death march" aka walking the final miles and the extreme heat and cold (depending on the time of year) can also take their toll. In this episode we hear stories from the current women's record holder, Taylor Nowlin, as well as a man who set an OKT (only known time) for a QUADRUPLE (or 8x R2R) for a total of 168 miles in one go, Christof Teuscher. Stories also from Sandi Nypaver and previous record holder Cat Bradley (a Western States 100 mile Champion). Cover photo by Nico Barraza. Music by Summer Heart.

Joining the panel are Heidi Kumm, Sarah Pizzo and Sandi Nypaver. In a couple of short years, Lucrezi has amassed a following of tens of thousands of tank-top-and-trucker-hat-wearing women who feed off each others’ energy and encouragement and take to the trails all across the country - and increasingly the world. The panel discusses everything from running on menstruation cramps to safety on the trails and tips for running hills.

Sandi Nypaver is an accomplished ultrarunner. She did her first 100 miler at 21 years old and has been on a running journey through life ever since. She recently qualified for the USA's Long Distance Trail Running Worlds team and was injured just days before the race. Most people (including a younger version of Sandi) would be demoralized and have trouble shaking that experience. But when I asked today’s Sandi how she feels about it, she said, “It’s all better…actually I think I’m now running better now (more efficiently) because it happened.” But Sandi didn’t always see the world in a positive way. Her journey to love and acceptance started young and is admittedly ongoing, but the strides she’s taken to pull herself away from self-hate and into self-love are worth sharing for anyone else who believes you are not valuable. Today we talk about: Finding a place of peace in life - the long winding path to self-love What we say matters: How words from others formed her self-image as a young girl The identical twin experience Exercise addiction Social anxiety Cutting to numb the pain How to change your self-image from hatred to love Volunteering gives people purpose Connecting the dots: Each experience leads to greater understanding of yourself Sage: How her boyfriend helps her look at the world in a more positive way This is such a great episode: it's raw and filled with deep emotions yet hopeful that change can happen. Please take a moment to share this episode with someone who needs it, because at the end of the day, we're all in this together.
