We catch up with show friend, Sage Canaday, and discuss his recent Boston Marathon experience and what's next! One of our favorites.
This week we start off by giving everyone in Florida our well wishes during this tough time with Hurricane Milton moving through. Then we discuss Courtney Dauwalter continuing her dynasty of high profile race victories by winning Nice Cote d' Azur (UTMB) 100 mile and she was not far off from first place overall. Then we go over the Saddles 100 and 50 mile races in Prescott, AZ where two of our friends and favorite Ohio trail runners Chad Trumbo and Jay Smithberger competed in those races and did very well. We also discuss race resultrs from Cuyamaca 100K, Spooner's Cove 50K, DC Peaks 50, Hennepin 100, Shawnee 50/50, Arkansas Traveller 100, and Yankee Springs Fall 50K. There is a new self-supported FKT on the 1,444 mile Buckeye trail. We take a look at Nedd Brockman from Australia who is trying to break Yiannis Kouros's long standing 1,000 mile record of 10 days 10 hours 30 minutes and 36 seconds. Nedd is 6 days in and 900K deep so he has some ground to make up in the next 4 days. We end the show talking about the Taco Bell 50K race in Denver that Sage Canaday participated in recently. Sounds like you need an iron stomach to get that done. Johnny revisits a 50K that he did with some friends in Columbus where they stopped at multiple breweries throughout the run. YWGO, today, I'll be sharing a recent coaching call I had with my new coaches, Sage and Sandi of Higher Running. I've been following each of them for years, so when it came time to start thinking about how to approach a PB attempt I'd like to make for the London Marathon, they were my first choice of coaches to work with. I'm about halfway through my training for London, so I thought this would be a good time to check in with them to talk about how things are going. We'll talk about tough workouts, being uncomfortable, and nutrition. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Sage and Sandi. 0:00 intro 0:31 How did they write the plan 4:24 Why I Wanted a Coach 8:48 How I'm dealing with the faster shorter reps 12:35 I don't like longer reps 15:23 A workout is just information (make clip) 17:53 Pivoting to more race-specific work 21:56 What's the point of running between easy and marathon effort in a long run 25:38 How Many Gels 31:41 Pros get 8 bottles per race 35:03 Should I be taking in salt during a race? Welcome to Day 3 of Good Morning, Mont Blanc. This is the inaugural year of Freetrail's daily morning show, kicking off with the 20th anniversary of the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc (UTMB), the most important global event in the sport of trail running. The show is hosted each day by professional athlete, Dylan Bowman. Dylan is joined on Day 3 by elite athletes, content creators, and fan favorites in the sport of trail running: Sally McRae, Sage Canaday and Billy Yang. Sage joins us fresh off his race at TDS, which he finished last night. TDS is now nearly 100 miles and 28,000 feet of climbing, the trails are very technical, and it was even more challenging with the weather. They talk about his pulmonary embolism, his overall health and how he's feeling physically. Fun fact: The pack that Sage wears during TDS is the Zephyr Pro Vest, the same pack we're giving away 10 of for Freetrail Fantasy! Sally and Billy talk about their friendship, Billy's recent pacing of Sally, Billy's fun surprise this week, their past experiences at UTMB and how the race and community has changed over the past decade. Everyone talks about UTMB, past races and what the courses and trails are like here in Chamonix. The panel previews the OCC race. Who are they key players? Who do we think will win? If you're interested in playing Freetrail Fantasy this week, make sure to tune in! Finally, Tim Perry, who works in product and brand at CamelBak joins the panel to talk brand, product, UTMB partnership, and athlete strategy for the brand. Sage's Strava 2023 OCC Route Dani Moreno's OCC File Editor's Notes: There are 118 nations participating in UTMB this year. Courtney is actually Bib #1, not Jim. Freetrail Fantasy Make sure you play Freetrail Fantasy and pick 10 deep for both men and women for each participating race (OCC, CCC and UTMB). Go get your picks in. Make sure to stay tuned for the rest of the Good Morning, Mont Blanc shows this week where we will be doing race previews for all three races, and interviews with top contenders. Fantasy Prizes We have amazing prizes for Freetrail Fantasy this week. 10 winners will receive head to toe Hoka kits including footwear, a CamelBak Zephyr pack, Ketone shots from HVMN, and Freetrail swag. Please note: We do our best to ship prize packages outside the US, but cannot guarantee it due to shipping costs and logistics. Hoka and UTMB were born in the Alps - fueled by the thrill of flying up and down mountains. Trail running is in Hoka's DNA, and they are proud to be the 2023 UTMB World Series Premier Partner and help share the sport with as many people as possible Check out Hoka's AR experience and join athletes like Jim Walmsley for a run in the alps. CamelBak invented the hydration pack category a couple decades ago and has remained on the forefront of innovation for this very important product sector. Outside of footwear, the pack is the most critical piece of running gear and you'll see a bunch of people trusting CamelBak throughout race week out on the trails around the Mont Blanc. If you're here in Chamonix, there is a public event hosted by CamelBak on Thursday from 6-8pm at Folie Douce Hotel in Chamonix – there will be a panel discussion, followed by an open bar/mixer. They will also be previewing some of their 2024 products in the space. Again it's open to the public so feel free to stop by on Thursday, the Freetrail team will be there. If you can't make it, they have a booth at the expo, so stop by and check it all out.
Welcome to Episode of 71 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring pro-runner, coach, and plant-based athlete, Sage Canaday. Sage has been running for over 20 years, and is known for his “any surface any distance” motto. He started out his professional career on the roads, and is a 2-time US Olympic Trials qualifier in the Marathon and a top 20 overall finisher at both the Boston and Chicago Marathons. In 2012, he pivoted to mountain ultra trail running, with many wins and podiums in the years that followed.Sage was raised as a lacto-ovo vegetarian. He experimented with adding meat, poultry and fish to his diet at various points throughout his life, but he found that this “foreign cuisine” didn't appeal to his tastebuds or seem to offer any noticeable performance benefits in his N=1 experiment. So he concluded that it wasn't for him, and ultimately decided to became a vegan instead. We discuss what led him to take this next step, and how he has fueled his long and diverse running career while following a vegetarian/vegan diet. You'll hear him talk about a typical day of eating, his go-to performance nutrition strategies, how all of this has evolved over his 20+ years of running, and much more. And lastly, because I always like to put things in context, we recorded this interview in early June. He's had a busy summer of training, and will be running TDS by UTMB on Aug 28th. We hope you have an amazing time in Chamonix, Sage!Links & Resources:Sage's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Vo2maxProductionsSage's coaching business: https://higherrunning.com/Follow Sage on Instagram, Facebook, and TwitterAnnouncements:Have nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Welcome to Episode 64 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! As many of you know, I was at the Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB on April 29th to run the 50k. Canyons is a large international event, as it is a qualifier for both the UTMB World Series Finale in Chamonix, France as well as of the Western States 100, so Auburn was buzzing ALL weekend long with amazing athletes. Not long after I finished my own race, I decided to make the most of the fact that I was surrounded by so many big names in trail and ultra running and see if anyone would be up for a mini race nutrition interview! Turns out, quite a few athletes were happy to chat with me. I interviewed 11 finishers - 6 pros and 5 recreational - including Cole Watson (1st male in the 100k), Priscilla Forgie (2nd female in the 100k), Hayden Hawks (1st male in the 50k), Eric Lipuma (3rd male in the 50k), Heather Jackson (1st female in the 50k), Abby Levene (7th female in the 50k), Michel Poletti (Co-founder of UTMB), Elise Mordos (100k), Shannon Hataway (50k), Josh Downey (50k), and my husband, Eric Fullenbaum (50k). I also chatted briefly with Sage Canaday and Corrine Malcolm - they didn't race but were spectating / commenting on all the action of the weekend.I go over a few themes that I observed - the big one being related to the insane heat of the day and how it affected everyone's nutrition strategies. The main takeaway, as always, is that there is no one best way to fuel. Not surprisingly, everyone used different products and approaches. Shoutout to all the companies these athletes mentioned, including Precision Fuel Fuel & Hydration, Spring Energy, Skratch, Naak, Never Second, GU, Maurten, and Herbalife CR7. For the second half of the show, I go into great detail about my own race, including what the scene was like in Auburn, live clips from the trails and my finish, and of course, my nutrition before, during and after my race. It was a fantastic weekend, and overall, I'm really pleased with how it all went. Thank you to all the athletes who let me shove my phone in their faces right after they ran to chat about performance nutrition! I hope you enjoy the episode. And if you do, PLEASE show your support by subscribing to the show, sharing it with friends, and leaving a rating / review wherever you listen to your podcasts. I need your help to keep this show going!Announcements:Photo Credit: Will MatthewsMusic Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Sage and Sandi have had quite the year with medical emergencies and their home burning down, but the couple have managed to power through adversity and keep a positive outlook despite the setbacks. We welcome both onto the show today to catch up on life, health and training/racing updates. This should be a great show!
In episode 102, I speak with Stephen Gnoza who is a professional video producer and amateur runner (marathon best of 2:55) currently based out of Boulder, Colorado. After a decade of working in corporate video, Stephen has begun to explore more creative video projects. One of his YouTube series, Serious Runner, caught my attention. All great comedy is a reflection of life, and I could see myself doing some of the things, that The Serious Runner character does in the videos. The series features cameos from elite runner Sage Canaday which definitely adds an extra bit of realism to proceedings. The Serious Runner videos provide a glimpse at common quirks and social media habits of very passionate amateur runners, probably things most runners are guilty of! Myself included. The humour is predicated on how the character reacts to things, and it is not based on any judgement on others. Stephen is also a partner in MUT Running, a media company focused on providing media coverage to sub-ultra trail races. When not running, Stephen dabbles in web development and is an aspiring screenwriter. Whilst we cover some light hearted topics, we also cover some serious topics, no pun intended. But beneath the comedy the character of The Serious Runner holds a mirror of self reflection back at ourselves. You can follow him on Instagram or YouTube. ————————————————————— This episode is supported by Tracksmith, a brand which actively represents and supports the development of a runner's life in the running community. Sage has been racing at the top level in World Ultra and Mountain Races for over 10 years whilst frequently transitioning over to running road marathons at a very high level with a personal best of 2:16 in 2011 and a 16th position in the 2016 Boston marathon running 2:19 which Sage rates as one of his best performances due to the less than perfect weather conditions and time spent running solo. Sage has won numerous trail races around the world and competed in the most iconic and toughest races on the calendar such as UTMB and Western States.
