Camille Herron is one of the best ultrarunners in the world right now for both women and men. You can find Camille with a big smile on her face while regularly beating both the men and women in ultramarathons. One of her secret weapons is her unwavering positive attitude and a desire to prove her doubters wrong. She has been successful in both road and trail races from the marathon, 100 miles and 24 hour events. Earlier this year she was in a bad car accident that she was lucky to walk away from but this near death experience changed her focus and she's tackling each day with a new energy and appreciation. In this podcast we discuss Camille's near death experience, her records including her World record for fastest marathon in a superhero costume, how she is approaching training, her diet and her favorite fast food. We discuss her preparation this year for the most competitive ultra in the world, Comrades Marathon, and the highly competitive Western States 100 less than one month apart as well as PEDs, supplements, whether women are selling themselves short in competition, her unique running gait, doubters and trolls, and her move to Colorado. Jeff Garmire set the new overall record on the 800 mile Arizona Trail, finishing it self supported in 15 days 13 hours and 10 minutes. That beats the supported record by 9+ hours and 3+days for the self supported record, an impressive effort! Jeff calls the 800 mile Arizona Trail a "short" FKT (Fastest Known Time) route. As unbelievable as that sounds, to Jeff 800 miles is a tiny portion of trails he's accomplished in one go. Since 2011 Jeff has logged over 21,000 miles on America's long trails including completing the Triple Crown in one year which includes the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. He completed all the Colorado 14ers in one year and the prestigious Nolans 14 in under 60 hours. Final HURT 100 Episode: Candice's Story. Part 1: "How the HURT 100 Race turned into a love story" narrated by Candice Burt (story style). Part 2: Interview with Kevin Westlake (pacer/Crew/Airbnb Host). Part 3: Interview with Catra Corbett, Crew and Pacer. From Candice's story: "He was standing near me and just his presence made me feel alive. His fingers clasped in his running vest, board shorts hanging down to his knees looking more like a surfer than a runner. Because, well he IS a surfer. I still wasn’t sure why he was at the race. He wasn’t a runner, I’d just met him days earlier but now he was standing right next to me ready to pace me the final 8 miles to the finish of this 100 mile race in the jungle and I knew I wanted him there but I was worried. I glanced at my legs, covered in mud and sweat and sticky with dreams that slowly seeped from my head where they had been born 6 years earlier settling slowly somewhere in the mud with my ego. I’d be getting my finish but not in the time or place I hoped for."

How does she stay so strong mentally and physically competing against the best runners in the world on the toughest terrain? We talk about the psychology of competing, pain, DNFs, and mental strength.

The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) has historically been a place for ultra runners to test their skills and endurance against the best in the world and a beautiful and challenging location for a long unsupported run. It's a classic Fastest Known Time (FKT) Route and the Canyon is a place of unparalleled beauty. The route is approximately 42 miles from South Kaibab Trail to North Kaibab Trail and back to South Kaibab with almost 11,000 ft of climbing. The long descents and ascents have beaten many a runner into a "death march" aka walking the final miles and the extreme heat and cold (depending on the time of year) can also take their toll. In this episode we hear stories from the current women's record holder, Taylor Nowlin, as well as a man who set an OKT (only known time) for a QUADRUPLE (or 8x R2R) for a total of 168 miles in one go, Christof Teuscher. Stories also from Sandi Nypaver and previous record holder Cat Bradley (a Western States 100 mile Champion). Cover photo by Nico Barraza. Music by Summer Heart.
Bryan Paisley has an incredible story of addiction, overcoming adversity, of learning to live life fully and the day to day challenges of depression and sobriety. Since becoming sober, Bryan has embraced ultramarathons completing a number of 50k, 50 mile and 100k races. We dig into how running helps the recovery process and mental health, why so many ultra runners struggle with depression, using gratitude to find joy, spirituality and the path to finding greater meaning, how to love, his training and upcoming races (he's signed up for the Tahoe 200!).

She runs for Salomon and finished 3rd at the Western States 100 this year in one of the most stacked ultra fields ever. Lucy has a wealth of knowledge and wisdom both in running and in life. We explore topics like women in running, running ultras as a teenager, addictive personalities, eating disorders, plant based diets, her training and favorite workouts, social media the positives and negatives, burnout, bucket list races & 2019 plans, ebb and flow of training and her favorite races in Australia. Visit our website for some of her recipe ideas!
Thanksgiving at Candice's House is a special edition podcast recorded between dinner and dessert on ... you guessed it... Thanksgiving! We put a mic in the middle of the table and recorded a podcast with a bunch of runners (and some family) who I had over for a Friendsgiving feast. Off the cuff, sometimes silly, sometimes hilarious and definitely gross and embarrassing, here's a very candid recording from my table to your ears. Hope you enjoy this bonus (and we think) fun episode! Special Guests: Don Freeman from Trail Runner Nation Podcast, Jenny Low, Chad Neu, Tim Probst, Ken "The Shark" Dam, Ali Riecke and munchkins Charlie, Marina and Stella to add the kid perspective. Cheers!
David Roche is a sought after coach as well as a world class athlete and a writer. David is a wealth of knowledge about training and racing and puts an emphasis on enjoying the process rather than focusing on results. He believes races should be celebrations, not tests. On this episode we dig into David's past as a football and baseball star, how he met his wife Megan, a Stanford MD and also a world class athlete, and the mental side of training and racing including how to deal with race nerves and post race depression, why short, fast sprints will make you faster and so much more. David and Megan have a new book out called "The Happy Runner: Love the Process,Get Faster and Run Longer" and David writes a regular column in Trail Runner Magazine.
Catra Corbett is well known for her crazy adventures, prolific racing, and her colorful look, tattoos, and doxie dog Truman. In this episode we dig into deep topics like how to pee standing up (for the ladies), women in Ultrarunning, why is there a disparity between male/female entrants in ultras and whether that's a problem, what Catra uses for safety on the trails including some info on safety trackers, dealing with wild animals, age and how it relates to racing and recovery, how to get clean and sober and how to stay that way (think: passion), depression and mental illness, sexual abuse and more. We also learn about Catra's crazy routes including her yo-yo of the JMT (424 miles and an FKT!), finishing the Triple Crown of 200s at 53 years young, and plans for a 100 mile/rock climb of the nose in Yosemite.
Courtney Dauwalter has been winning ultramarathons left and right for 3+ years, often outright, beating not only the women, but also the men. Candice Burt, host of Humans of Ultrarunning, sits down with Courtney to discuss her demons, how/why she can go so deep and race for so long and hard, her training, how she recovers and injuries (why she is never injured, knock in wood), diet, FKTs, Barkley, this year's races including Bigs Backyard and the Tahoe 200 and what she is planning for 2019!
