Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. SlumberCBN There's no denying that sleep is one of the most powerful factors to upgrading your overall health and running performance. We all know it by now, but sometimes no matter how well-intentioned we are; getting good, quality sleep doesn't come easy. Sometimes you can't get your mind to relax, other times you toss and turn all night. One way or another, it all leads to poor quality sleep. That's why we've partnered with Slumber, the leader in science-backed sleep supplements using CBN. CBN is a hemp-derived melatonin alternative which promotes rest, relaxation, and sleep. And it works. In a recent 2024 study, participants who used Slumbers Deep Zzzs CBN Gummies for 30 days reported significant improvements in time to sleep, got 72 minutes of extra deep, and reported waking up 1.5 less times per night on average. What I love most is that you can mix and match different formulations to specifically address your goals or your own struggles with sleep. What if you could take a long break from running and not lose any fitness? The theory is simple; train harder now so that you have mileage “banked” for later when you might be training less. We'll look more closely at whether this could be an effective strategy with topics including: Why mileage matters for building aerobic fitness How long it takes to lose fitness during a break from training What is supercompensation and whether it helps you to hold onto fitness longer Whether it matters how you spread mileage across a training cycle or if it's only the total volume that counts Whether banking mileage is an effective strategy that you should consider adopting Don't let a break eat into your fitness and find out if you can really bank fitness beforehand. Sadie Engelhardt returns to the podcast today. Back on the podcast is the 18-year-old American track and field mega-star from Ventura, California. Sadie is a senior at Ventura High School, where she has had a storied career and is considered one of the best high school runners ever. The NC State commit (and only the third girls competitor from California to be named Gatorade Best Player of the Year) has excelled in both cross country and track and field. Most recently, she came in 11th at the Girls XC Nationals on December 7. She has also maintained a 4.59 GPA in the classroom. Sadie has even found time to volunteer locally on behalf of Runners For Public Lands, helping to clean trails and other places to run around Ventura County. With all that said, it's the oval where she truly separates herself from the rest. Her PRs include times of 2:03.46 in the 800m, 4:08.86 in the 1500m, 4:28.46 in the mile, and 9:50.69 in the 3200m. The aforementioned mile time was a national high school record in the outdoor mile. Sadie has had three consecutive 1,600m state titles, and she helped her school win a state championship in the 4x800 relay. In 2024, Sadie ran in her first professional outdoor meet at The TEN, where she stunned the world by running a 4:09.7 in the 1500m. She then zeroed in on three professional meets to try and make the Olympic qualifying standard, and at the Portland Track Festival on June 9 she pulled off a 4:08.86 in the 1500m, earning her spot at the qualifier–becoming the third high school athlete to ever qualify for the 1500m in the Olympics. While Sadie only competed in the preliminary round, it was a valuable experience for this rising phenom to keep in her arsenal. In today's conversation, Sadie shares reflections from her XC season, her hopes and dreams for the 2025 track season, insights from her training, how she plans to go out with a bang in HS, and so much more. Today's podcast is an exploration and deep dive into how to go from "good" to "great" in the sport of running in the coming months, and many insights on training, racing, and well-being. All with Coach Patrick Henner, one of the greats. If you're not familiar with Coach Henner, Coach Henner has coached Mike Smith (current coach of NAU), Chris Miltenberg (current coach of UNC, formerly Stanford), Brandon Bonsey (current coach of Georgetown), and more in his tenure. He has also coached studs Isaiah Jewett and Will Sumner over the past few years. This past year, Coach Henner worked extensively with Hobbs Kessler going into his performances at the US Olympic Trials, where he placed in the top-3 in both the 1500m and 800m to send himself to the Paris Olympics, where he then went on to place 5th in the 1500m. Prior to successful coaching stints at Georgia & USC, Henner was the director of track and field and cross country at Georgetown from 2007-15, and prior to that he had spent eight seasons as the Hoyas' head men's cross country coach and assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field team. Henner's coaching resumé also includes a nine-year stay at James Madison, where he led both the men's and women's cross country teams to their first CAA titles, trained 28 track and field All-Americans, and was twice named CAA Coach of the Year. He began his coaching career at Blacksburg High in Blacksburg, Va., where both the men's and women's teams won state championships in 1984, 1985, and 1986. In today's conversation, Coach Henner and I dive-deep into training theory, speed development, the things great athletes do during this next month of the year, his thoughts on racing, lessons and insights from working with Hobbs Kessler, and so much more. Today on the podcast is the elite duo of Parker Wolfe and Ethan Strand. If you're not familiar with Parker or Ethan, they are two of the greatest (if not THE) runners in Tar Heel history. Parker won the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Title in the 5k, taking down debately one of the most stacked fields of all time. Parker also placed 9th at the 2023 NCAA XC National Championships and 7th at the 2024 edition, and placed 2nd in both the 5k and 3k at the 2024 NCAA Indoor National Championships. Ethan has the school record in the Mile running a 3:54.62, is an ACC Champion, NCAA All-American in both track and XC, a finalist in the 1500m at the 2024 US Olympic Trials, and most recently placed 8th at the 2024 NCAA XC National Championships. Both are also NIL athletes for NIKE. In today's conversation, Parker and Ethan recap their XC season, including exclusive insights and stories from the ups and downs of the season. We also dive into their friendship and how that has evolved over the years, how they've become leaders within the UNC program, their ambition for their track season, their bet going into the BU 3k this weekend, and so much more. This conversation was both insightful and a ton of fun. I hope you will take the time to be enlightened by the wisdom of two of the best NCAA runners we've seen in quite some time. THE EMILY SISSON SPECIAL Emily Sisson is one of the greatest US Distance Runners of all-time, and she still has her best running ahead of her. At every level, Emily has been ABSOLUTELY dominant. In high school, Emily qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships all four years, a feat that has barely been replicated throughout history. In college, at Providence College, Emily was a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in the 5000m at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in 2015. She also set a collegiate indoor record for the women's 5000m with a time of15:12.22 at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships. Emily turned pro in 2015 with New Balance and continued to train under her college coach, Ray Tracey, and has all the way up to the present day. As a pro, Emily has set multiple American Records, including the American Record in the Marathon, which stands to this day. It was set at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:18:29. Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February. In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more. I absolutely loved this conversation and the opportunity to pick Emily's brain on so many topics. This one is packed with wisdom! Take the time to listen to it. Tap into the Emily Sisson Special. Professional runner for Brooks Erika Kemp shares how it all went down at the 2024 USATF 10k National Championships, held Sept. 21 in Northport, NY, at the Cow Harbor 10k. This is Kemp's second appearance on WRS, and I am so happy to have her back. In this episode, Kemp shares what's been happening in her racing and training life this year, leading up to this 10k championship event. This includes training for and racing at two US Olympic Trials, in February and June; taking a much needed break; and returning to training in August. You'll hear how, even without yet being in peak racing fitness, Kemp was able to deliver an incredible 10k performance, and why training and racing with friends and teammates is always a welcome boost. Erika is a two-time national champion, in the 20k (2021) and 15k (2019), and just last year raced her first marathon: the 2023 Boston Marathon in April. There she ran an incredible 2:33 which qualified her for the 2024 Olympic Trials and made her the fastest American-born Black women to ever run the marathon. With that, Kemp tops The List, an accounting of all the American-born Black women who've broken 3 hours in the marathon. This story is all about how hard work, year after year, does pay off, and the power of having great support. This episode is part of the WRS Race Report series. Each episode features a top 10 performer sharing her experience at one of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF Running Circuit championship series of races happen throughout the US all year long. Each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race being run. The 5k National Championships, the last race of the 2024 series, is next: November 2. Dakotah Lindwurm is a professional distance runner for the Minnesota Distance Elite Team, sponsored by Puma. Her specialty is the marathon. Just a few short weeks ago, Lindwurm became an Olympian. This is Dakotah Lindwurm's Olympic dream story. It begins with the moment that sparked this dream, way back in childhood. Lindwurm shares how, despite not showing obvious potential in her early running, she continued to dream big: through her walk-on DII collegiate running days; turning pro; the US Olympic Trials in Orlando, Florida, back on February 2, 2024, where she was considered a strong underdog; to making Team USA; and up through racing on the greatest stage of sports: The Olympics. Lundwurm's story is all about big dreams that weathered big challenges, bolstered by the power of support and self-belief. Lindwurm ran an incredible race at the Paris Olympics, where she placed 12th. She was the top American finisher, running 2:26:44. And, she's already looking ahead: Lindwurm will be lining up at the 2024 NYC Marathon on November 3. One fact is now clear, Lindwurm is no longer underdog: she is and will forever be an Olympian. The Notre Dame men's swimming program has been suspended for a minimum of one academic year after an investigation into potential gambling. The men's swimming and diving programs are coming off their best combined finish at NCAAs in school history as they were 10th at the 2024 NCAA Championships. Just after U.S. Olympic Trials in June, the school announced that the law firm, Ropes & Gray LLP to conduct an external review after “potential issues with the culture” of the team. Sources have told SwimSwam that the investigation has been ongoing at least since January and authorities were allegedly monitoring activity during US Olympic Trials. The review found that gambling was an occurrence for most of the team members that were set to return for this upcoming season. Swimmers place “over/under” lines on swims at meets. One former member of the team says they even took wagers on “how many women would cry after their races.” In addition to betting on swimming, some of the athletes participated in betting on other sports such as the NCAA March Madness tournaments.

At most US Olympic Trials, you earn your spot by being the top finisher. In sports like track & field and swimming, it's the top finishers who get to compete at the Paris Games this summer. Gymnastics doesn't work that way –– but some people think it should. Unpacking this messy, subjective process are two guests: Dvora Meyers, author of The End Of The Perfect 10, and Emily Giambalvo, reporter at The Washington Post. Learn more about your ad choices.
