Why were they casting their clothes at Saul's feet? It'd be easier to stone someone with less clothing on. They wouldn't be as warm and could move easier. The stones were not rocks, they were very large. The fulfillment of Acts 1:8 was done in Acts 8:1. The church as a whole, was scattered. Saul was going into people's houses and dragging them out of their homes forcibly and putting them into prison simply because they were Christians. God hates sorcery. Simon was using sorcery and therefore he was outside of God's will. He was so far out there that he had people thinking that he is the great power of God. Then Philip was preaching and they believe what he told them and were baptized, including Simon! Signed gifts were from God to show that God has chosen them to be the leadership authority of the New Testament Church. It was God's sign to the people that they could follow those men.

How does the Holy Spirit respond to the world’s opposition? When Christians are forced to flee Jerusalem, the end result is the gospel reaching Judea and Samaria. Come see how the Holy Spirit carries out the mission of Jesus in the face of opposition.

In this sermon on Acts chapter 8 Pastor Mike Ward explains that the sovereign Spirit of God directs the Churches mission. And The power of God is freely given to all who receive it by faith. Believers are empowered by the Spirit but they are never masters over the Spirit.

Like the new believers in the first part of ACTS 8, many believers today have been baptized in water but have not yet received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as promised in the Scriptures. Listen to this teaching and discover what you may be missing.

THINK 1. As you think about this message, think, “how does God want my beliefs and or actions to change? What is one thing I can do to bring about this change? 2. Why did you become a Christian? What were the specific reasons? Were any of the reasons selfish? Were you trying to please someone, impress someone, or satisfy your own desires? 3. Simon the Sorcerer believed and was baptized. Why did he believe in Jesus Christ? What was his motive? 4. Peter says that Simon’s motive was bitterness. What was he bitter about? 5. Have you known someone who became a Christian for purely selfish reasons? What was the result? 6. Have you ever been fooled by someone, even someone close, you thought was a Christian but in the end really wasn’t? How did this impact you and your faith in Jesus Christ? 7. Why can’t you buy the gift of God with money? How do you then receive it? PRAY Jesus- I want to believe and follow you because I need you and your gift of grace. I’m so sorry for any selfish motive I might have had in following you and being a part of your church. I thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Thank you for giving it freely. In your name I pray. Amen. LIVE Do a gut check: Why do you believe in Jesus? Why do you continue to follow him? Is it out of an expectation that you’ll receive something or is it because you really need him?

While preaching the gospel in Samaria, Phillip encounters a pagan magician Simon who professes faith in Christ and is baptized. But then, Simon asks Peter and John to buy from the ability to give the Holy Spirit to people. While Simon seems like a believer for a time, he shows that despite early indications he did not know the Lord. We, too, should test to see if we are in the faith.
