Jessica Slice, author of Unfit Parent, shares her profound insights and experiences on disability and parenting, breaking down stereotypes, addressing ableism, and showing what disabled parents can teach us all about resilience, adaptability, and embracing life's challenges.Full Show NotesIn our conversations around parenting, we often have a narrow definition of what abilities and physical capacities are required to be a “good” parent. From movies and advertisements portraying mothers and fathers effortlessly multitasking and holding toddlers on their hip, to parenting talks describing the chaos of carpool lines and daily errands, the portrait of parenting we encounter every day seems to leave out those with disabilities or physical limitations. As a parent, what do you do when your experiences don't match up with these cultural representations? How can each of us benefit from broadening our understanding of what it truly means to be an effective caregiver? In today's insightful episode, we're joined by writer and disability advocate Jessica Slice, author of Unfit Parent: A Disabled Mother Challenges an Inaccessible World. Jessica became disabled at age 28 and has experienced firsthand how our cultural perceptions about motherhood often exclude people with disabilities. Through her writing and advocacy, she passionately argues that disabled parents have powerful insights to offer all parents, and she exposes the ableism and biases in parenting culture. Jessica's eye-opening perspectives invite us to consider how embracing a broader definition of parenting can benefit everyone. What Disabled Parents Can Teach All of UsEarly in our conversation, Jessica describes how attending a typical parenting talk left her feeling like an imposter because none of the descriptions matched her own parenting reality. In writing openly about her experience, Jessica discovered a community of disabled parents who shared similar feelings. But what began as a revealing essay soon transformed into a broader mission: to show how disabled parents actually contribute unique abilities and insights to parenting.Jessica points out how disabled people grow adept at solving practical day-to-day problems surrounding movement, food, rest, and more. Such problem-solving skills translate directly into caring for a newborn, making disabled parents often surprisingly adept at navigating early parenthood. Moreover, disabled parents have already learned powerful lessons in letting go of expectations, embracing uncertainty, and adapting to changing circumstances—qualities that deeply serve all parents as they navigate the complexities of raising children.Ableism and Our Culture of Fear Around DisabilityJessica thoughtfully unpacks ableism: the deep-seated, often unconscious biases and fears that lead society to view disability through a lens of pity or disdain. She explores how ableism shapes everything from medical care to reproductive rights—and even the way parenting itself is structured and evaluated. One of the episode's most fascinating discussions focuses on Jessica's research around early transitions into parenthood for non-disabled families versus disabled families. Remarkably, Jessica discovered that disabled parents tend to adjust far more easily and report fewer incidences of postpartum depression—despite often facing greater physical health challenges. She explains how our cultural fear of disability makes this early period harder for non-disabled parents: society conditions us to dread having bodies that are weak, fragile, or dependent on others. Disabled parents, meanwhile, have already accepted and adapted to these realities, making the transition less shocking and chaotic.Overcoming Barriers in Parenting SystemsThroughout our interview, Jessica candidly describes how social systems and institutions—from reproductive health practices to the foster care system—are often ill-equipped for disabled people. She discusses the enormous challenges and fears disabled parents face when navigating the foster adoption process, including inaccessible mandatory classes and intense scrutiny about physical fitness to parent. Despite these obstacles, Jessica demonstrates the incredible resourcefulness and creativity that disabled parents show in developing customized solutions for caring for their families.Jessica's story about becoming a parent through fostering and surrogacy illustrates poignantly both the systemic barriers disabled people face and their impressive capacity to advocate for themselves, adapt, and thrive. She insists that disabled parents' lives are not tragedies to be pitied; instead, they exemplify adaptability, patience, and the courage to embrace life's unpredictability. In the Episode…Beyond these deeply insightful conversations, our discussion with Jessica covers much more, including:How Jessica's disability shifted her perspective from striving and achievement to genuine contentmentThe critical importance of accessible and inclusive sexual education for disabled teensThe ongoing practice of invention and creativity disabled parents rely on to accomplish everyday caregiving tasksThe connection between productivity, capitalism, and society's attitudes toward disability and human worthJessica challenges and expands our cultural notion of what it truly means to be a capable, loving, and effective parent. Her journey offers invaluable lessons, not only for the disabled community, but for parents everywhere. What does it mean to lead with both heart and results? How do strong leaders build teams that thrive while ensuring business success? In this episode of Leadership With Heart, I have the pleasure of speaking with Susan Valverde, Brand President of Sylvan Learning, whose leadership journey is nothing short of inspiring. From starting as a franchisee to leading a national organization, Susan's path is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and people-centered Leadership. Throughout our conversation, Susan shares how her deep belief in her team's potential has shaped her leadership approach. She reflects on how growing up in an immigrant family, learning English alongside her loved ones, and working through challenges instilled in her the importance of collaboration and resilience. That foundation has fueled her leadership philosophy—one rooted in trust, open communication, and the belief that a strong team is the key to sustained success. One of the most compelling moments in our discussion is when Susan recalls not showing up as the leader she aspired to be. She shares a vulnerable story of losing a key team member unexpectedly and realizing, in hindsight, that she had missed critical signs about that person's aspirations. Rather than dwelling on the disappointment, she took it as a lesson to engage more deeply, to ask better questions, and to ensure that every team member has a space to share their goals. This moment of self-reflection has driven her to foster an environment where leaders support business growth and nurture personal and professional development. Susan also emphasizes that leadership isn't about having all the answers but asking the right questions. She highlights the importance of agility in an ever-changing world, especially as Sylvan Learning continues to evolve in the education space. Under her leadership, the company embraces new technologies, enhances learning experiences, and expands opportunities for students across diverse communities. At the heart of it all is a commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of background, have access to quality education. This conversation is a powerful reminder that leadership is an ongoing journey. It's about balancing results with care, making tough decisions while remaining deeply connected to people, and constantly evolving to meet new challenges. As Susan shares her insights, she reminds us that great leaders create space for others to grow, that resilience and adaptability are non-negotiable, and that success is not just about personal achievement. It's about lifting others along the way. What are the leadership lessons that have shaped you the most? How do you create an environment where people feel empowered to grow? Let's continue the conversation.

In this episode of Advancement Amplified: AI for IA, host Dan Giroux sits down with Andrew Gossen, Executive Director of Communications, Marketing, and Participation at Cornell University, to explore how AI is reshaping advancement teams. Andrew shares insights on AI's impact on marketing, fundraising, and engagement, as well as how institutions can balance efficiency with the human connection that remains at the heart of advancement. From predictive analytics to AI-powered donor insights, this conversation highlights key strategies for leveraging AI in higher education advancement.Guest Name: Andrew Gossen, Executive Director for Communications, Marketing, and Participation (Division of Alumni Affairs and Development), Cornell UniversityGuest Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewgossen/Guest Bio: Andrew Gossen is the executive director for communications, marketing, and participation in Cornell University's Division of Alumni Affairs and Development. He joined Cornell in 2010 to integrate emerging digital technologies – among them social media and crowdfunding – into the division's strategic plan. Previously, Gossen spent eight years at the Alumni Association of Princeton University in a number of diverse roles. His focus is using digital technologies and approaches to engagement to build audiences and mobilize them on behalf of a range of causes and organizations. In addition to speaking frequently on this topic to domestic and international audiences, he has served CASE Commission on Alumni Relations, co-chaired the CASE Joint Commission Task Force on Social Media, and received a CASE Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence in 2018. Gossen holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton and a doctorate in social anthropology from Harvard University.Key TakeawaysAI Adoption in Advancement Is Still Emerging – While AI's potential is clear, many institutions are still figuring out how to implement it effectively.Generative AI and Predictive Analytics Are Game-Changers – AI can automate content creation, analyze engagement data, and refine outreach strategies at scale.Personalization at Scale Is the Goal – AI-driven tools can help institutions better segment and engage their audiences while maintaining a human touch.AI Frees Up Time for Relationship-Building – Automating administrative tasks allows advancement professionals to spend more time connecting with donors.Culture and Training Matter – AI adoption requires a mindset shift, continuous learning, and collaboration across advancement and IT teams. The Evolution of AI in Higher Ed AdvancementCornell University has been at the forefront of AI exploration in advancement since 2018. Andrew Gossen explains that while AI has been on the radar for years, the release of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has significantly accelerated conversations. Unlike previous technological shifts, such as the rise of social media, institutions are proactively engaging with AI rather than resisting it. However, many teams are still struggling to determine how AI will fundamentally change their workflows and engagement strategies.Harnessing AI for More Effective Marketing and EngagementOne of the most immediate and tangible uses of AI in advancement is in marketing and communications. AI-driven marketing automation allows institutions to test different content strategies, analyze audience responses, and refine outreach in real-time. At Cornell, the integration of AI with advanced marketing platforms has created opportunities to A/B test content at scale, reducing the manual effort required by staff. This enables institutions to reach donors and alumni with more relevant, personalized messaging—without overburdening their teams.AI's Role in Fundraising: More Insight, Less Administrative WorkFor gift officers, one of AI's biggest advantages is its ability to consolidate and analyze donor data. AI can aggregate trip reports, past gift agreements, and engagement history to generate comprehensive donor profiles in seconds—something that would otherwise take hours of manual research. This allows advancement professionals to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time cultivating relationships with prospects. When used effectively, AI can enhance, rather than replace, the human interactions that drive successful fundraising.Overcoming Barriers to AI Adoption in AdvancementDespite AI's potential, institutions face challenges in implementation, including:Data Security Concerns – Ensuring donor data remains protected when using AI tools is a top priority.Institutional Risk Tolerance – Some universities are hesitant to fully embrace AI due to regulatory and reputational risks. The Need for Demonstrable ROI – Widespread AI adoption will likely accelerate when institutions can clearly quantify its impact on engagement and fundraising.Cornell has addressed some of these concerns by developing an AI Innovation Sandbox, a secure environment where teams can experiment with AI tools while maintaining data integrity. Additionally, an AI Innovation Lab pairs students with departments to explore new AI-driven solutions for university operations. These initiatives help Cornell stay ahead of the curve while mitigating risks. The Future of AI in Advancement: Where Are We Headed?Looking ahead, Andrew is most excited about AI's potential to drive hyper-personalized engagement at scale. With AI-powered audience segmentation, institutions can better understand donor motivations and deliver more relevant outreach. Rather than relying on outdated annual giving strategies, AI enables real-time experimentation, allowing advancement teams to continuously refine their messaging and approach. As AI capabilities evolve, institutions that invest in experimentation and innovation will be better positioned to engage the next generation of donors. The key is to integrate AI in ways that enhance—rather than replace—the relationships that make advancement work so impactful. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. In today's episode Erin Gallardo, PT, DPT, NCS talks with Annie Tapp, PT, DPT, PhD, NCS to discuss her research on the barriers and facilitators to implementing high-intensity gait training for stroke rehabilitation (and beyond). Months ago Annie was recruiting survey respondents for her PhD dissertation study on high intensity gait training in inpatient rehab. NeuroCollaborative allowed her to email and post her survey to our audience and today's conversation is a follow up to see what she learned. Annie's research data revealed common facilitators and barriers to implementing high intensity gait training for clinicians. There were some surprises and she shares what they were as well as future research questions. Does it have to only be done with walking? We discussed the core factors that make high intensity training desirable as well as what to do when you don't have the equipment or an appropriate candidate for treadmill training. You'll learn creative ways to implement high intensity training as well as the reason behind it. We also discuss what you'll also need to add in addition to high intensity training because this impairment does not necessarily improve and needs to be addressed separately. Nervous about taking someone with an acute stroke who may have never worked out before into high levels of intensity? We talk about that too! Art has a unique ability to transcend language, evoke emotion, and bring people together across cultural divides. This idea is embodied in the work of Samra Bashir, whose glass paintings celebrate the rich traditions of South Asian and Islamic art while inviting a broader audience into their intricate beauty. Samra's journey as an artist began as a personal escape—something she turned to during challenging times. But over the years, her work evolved into something much larger. Through her use of glass paint and light, she has built not just an art practice, but also a powerful means of storytelling, connection, and cultural education. In this episode of The Art Biz, host Alyson Stanfield talks with Samra about: How her creative journey started and what led her to glass painting. The role of light in her work and why it's an essential element. How she uses art to foster community and bridge cultural gaps. The importance of stepping out from behind the screen and sharing art in real-life spaces. Samra's story is a reminder that art doesn't just exist in isolation—it thrives in conversation, connection, and shared experiences. 01:50 Samra's Early Inspirations 02:28 Reviving Her Art in the U.S.04:05 Samra's Cultural Heritage and How It Shows Up in Her Work 08:42 Building an Audience and Overcoming Challenges11:37 Balancing Multiple Roles and Art 18:47 The Importance of Community and Teaching Workshops22:43 Connecting Through Art and Overcoming Barriers 26:08 Practical Tips for Artists to Engage with Community 36:50 Conclusion and Practical Applications for You
