SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 1:76-79; Matthew 28:1-8; Hebrews 7:15-25 Every Easter we celebrate again Jesus' Resurrection from the grave by "the power of an indestructible life" (Hebrews 7:16). In our Resurrection Sunday message for 2023 & the Year of Perservance, Pastor Court concludes his Passion Week Sermon Series on "Passionate Perseverance" with a focus on the persevering power of resurrection. The 1964 song "Feeling Good" famously includes a chorus proclaiming, "It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life, and I'm feeling good." Though not written with this focus, few words could more succintly describe our joy on Easter morning, when "the light of the Dayspring from on high [shines] on those living in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace" (Luke 1:79) -- for our Jesus "is able to save forever those who come to...Him, because He lives forever to intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25). SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 2:21-40 Our annual Christmas Eve candle lighting service in our sanctuary (& streaming live online) is when we gather as a family of faith to conclude the season of Advent. SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-20 Some of our favorite Christmastime images are postcard-perfect scenes of quaintly lit cabins in the snow & families lounging in the warm glow of a fireside. Yet despite these visions of calm & quiet, our holiday season reality often presents us with pressure & HURRY: the rush & crush of shopping, traffic on the roads, demands of parties & meals, wrapping & decorating, bills & costs...and sometimes a tumult of turmoil even in our souls. None of this seems very conducive to a simple, peace-filled, submitted & attentive lifestyle of spiritual preparation. Yet the Nativity story includes many pressures & urgencies, too, and the people in it reveal how God leads His own in the ways of patient submission to His perfect plan, even in the most pressing circumstances. SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 1:5-79 The Christmas season of December is also the Advent season of preparation, a time in which most of us find ourselves dealing with much PLANNING: of family & work gatherings, shopping & gift buying, festivities & meals, and so on. With our schedules so heavy-laden, we can find the joys of Christmastime overshadowed by stress as we struggle to maintain a spiritual sense of the season. In this message for the second week of Advent, we'll consider the patient hope demonstrated by Zechariah & Elisabeth, parents of John the Baptist, as an antidote to overly-stressed seasonal fatigue & a tonic of spiritual centering in God's word that can remind us of the reason for the season & the higher call of planning for the purposes of the Lord. *For those online: prepare your supplies to join us in Communion. SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 10:25-37 We conclude our sermon series on “Parables of Patience” with one of Jesus' best-known tales, the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10. Though the Jewish people of His day generally distained their northern neighbors (and close cousins) the Samaritans, Jesus framed His story around a Samaritan hero whose kindness to a Jewish stranger forms Jesus' answer to the question “Who is my neighbor?” Thus Jesus underscores that those of genuine faith should prioritize patient sacrifice & care in the Name of the Lord, even unto those who would classify themselves as their enemies. Sadly, in the time of Jesus, those who had the Scriptures and claimed to be the most devoted to God were the very ones who ridiculed, mocked, and rejected Christ above all others. This passage shows the religious leaders treating Jesus with contempt and ridicule. Our Savior responded by rebuking them in love and pointing them to the validity of God's law and the wonderful truth of the gospel. Scripture Text: Luke 16:14-17 Preacher: Dr. Shawn Merithew
The parable of the prodigal son is likely the most well-known of Jesus' parables, but it is really a story about two prodigal sons. We learn here that Christ has come to seek and to save the lost, and He saves not only the rank sinner, but also the self-righteous sinner. In this first sermon, we will focus on the first of the two prodigal sons and see how God is a compassionate Father who runs to meet us at the end of our prodigal road. Scripture Text: Luke 15:11-24 Preacher: Dr. Shawn Merithew
The parable of the great banquet is one of the more tragic parables of Christ. Why? Because it is delivered to Jewish people who think they are headed for the kingdom of heaven, yet it is meant to reveal their lostness because of their love for the things of this world. But the parable ends with a message of hope. The Marriage Feast of the Lamb will be served to the broken, the needy, the poor, the stranger, the foreigner – to all who receive the invitation and come in faith to Christ. SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 24:45-53; Acts 1-2; Joel 2 A fair amount of the Apostle Paul's prolific & influential epistolary ministry (half the books of the New Testament are attributed to him) was composed while in prison. Paul faced repeated incarceration as he travelled the ancient world evangelizing people to the Christian faith that was so persecuted in that era of the Roman Empire. Acts chapters 23-26 describe a period when Paul spent over two years imprisoned in the Praetorium (the Governor's complex) in Caesarea awaiting trial, despite having committed no crime. Rather than despair, Paul saw an opportunity to demonstrate patient faith & to give vibrant witness of God's Good News to his Roman captors. On this occasion, Jesus heals yet another demoniac, restoring the man's ability to speak. By this point in his ministry, many are beginning to wonder out loud if Jesus is indeed the Messiah. The religious leaders, infuriated by such conjecture, respond by spreading a vicious lie – they accuse Jesus of being in league with Satan. Jesus responds by not only revealing the inconsistency and hypocrisy of their thinking, but also by warning that those who are not with Him are against Him. Scripture Text: Luke 11:14-23 Preacher: Dr. Shawn Merithew
When you take the time to really ponder the weight of what Jesus is saying here in this text, you realize that this is one of the most incredible promises of God that you will find in all of Scripture. With these words, the Sovereign God of heaven and earth is inviting us to pursue Him in prayer. Whatever our needs, He is our compassionate Father, and He wants us to depend upon him in faith. But to receive the bounty of this promise, we must humble ourselves and pursue Him with vigor. Scripture Text: Luke 11:1-13 Preacher: Dr. Shawn Merithew
Are you a Mary or a Martha? That is the question we often ask ourselves when reflecting on this passage at the end of Luke 10, but it is based on a very deficient interpretation of the text. The story of Martha and Mary is a story about two godly women who are both seeking to faithfully love Jesus, but one of them struggles with being pulled away. Their story teaches us that dwelling in the Word of God is absolutely essential to a life of active service for the Son of God. Scripture Text: Luke 10:38-42 Preacher: Dr. Shawn Merithew
