Pastor Ed Crenshaw continues the "Good Neighbors" series from the book of James, exploring why we struggle to be good neighbors despite our best intentions. He provides a deep psychological analysis of the root causes of conflict in relationships, identifying three primary enemies: our own flesh (fallen nature), the world system with its corrupt values, and the devil who exploits our weaknesses. The sermon emphasizes that bad relationships start with bad desires within us - when someone stands between us and what we think will bring us pleasure, status, or fulfillment, we begin to fight and quarrel. The solution involves daily submission to God, resisting the devil, drawing near to God through worship, and humbling ourselves before both God and others.

Jesus teaches that experiencing life to the fullest requires loving both God and our neighbors. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, He challenges us to extend mercy beyond our comfortable boundaries, helping anyone in need regardless of social divisions. The religious expert knew the right answer intellectually but struggled with the practical application of loving those different from himself. True neighborly love transcends cultural categories and divisions, flowing naturally from a right relationship with God. When we align ourselves vertically with God first, we become better equipped to love horizontally across all dividing lines.

September 28-October 5th is Good Neighbor Week. Signed into law in 2022, Missouri Good Neighbor Week encourages citizens of Missouri to “participate in events and activities to establish connections with their neighbors.” In honor of Good Neighbor Week, we're sharing a conversation held during our 2025 Humanities Symposium: Ozarks Engaged: Citizenry and the Future of Our CommunitiesThis session is titled Engaged Neighbor, Engaged Citizenry: How Neighboring Strengthens Civic Life. Its goal is to highlight key findings from The State of Neighboring in Missouri (2022-2024) study, exploring shifts in community connection, the impact of declining personal interactions, and local initiatives—like Missouri Good Neighbor Week and the Engaged Neighbor Pledge—that are helping rebuild trust and civic engagement. Our conversation included David Burton from University of Missouri Extension and author of the State of Neighboring Report, and Michael Brittain from Restore SGF and Neighborhood Advisory Council Clean Committee. This conversation was recorded on April 5th, 2025, in Springfield, MO.

Ever wonder why you still know every word to a jingle from the '80s? In this episode of The Music in Me, I take you on a fun, nostalgic trip through the catchiest and most unforgettable commercial jingles of all time. From the very first Wheaties tune in 1926 to cultural hits like “I Want My Baby Back Ribs,” “Meow Meow Meow Meow,” and yes—even the love-it-or-hate-it “Kars-4-Kids”—we'll explore the songs that got stuck in our heads and changed advertising forever. Plus I share a hilarious personal story about creating her own jingle in college (spoiler: her family still remembers it). We'll also look at how jingles evolved into today's sonic branding, and why these little earworms are still so powerful. So, get ready to laugh, sing along, and maybe get a tune or two stuck in your head.JINGLES MENTIONED...Wheaties - "Try Wheaties" credited as the 1st radio commercial jingleCoca Cola - "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke"Nationwide Insurance - "Nationwide is on Your Side"Kit Kat - "Gimme a Break"Folgers Coffee - "The Best Part of Waking Up"Alka-Seltzer - "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz"State Farm - "Like a Good Neighbor"Oscar Mayer Bologna - "My Bologna Has a First Name"Chilis - "I Want My Baby Back Ribs"Kars4Kids - "1-877-Kars-4-Kids"Meow Mix - "Meow, meow, meow, meow"Toys "R" Us - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up, I'm a Toys "R" Us Kid"What did you think of this episode? LOVING LIFE AT HOME - Christian Marriage, Faith-Based Parenting, Biblical Homemaking, Purposeful Living

Since September is National Good Neighbor Month, I thought this would be the perfect time to share some ways to be a good neighbor. Compiling this list of ideas was easy. Our family has been blessed with lots and lots of wonderful neighbors throughout the years, so it was a simple matter of remembering all the kind things they've done for us along the way. Show Notes VERSES CITED: - Colossians 4:5-6  tells us to “Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” - Hebrews 13:2 - “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”  - Isaiah 58:10 - “Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.” - Proverbs 27:14 -“If someone blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be counted as a curse to him.” - Romans 12:16, 18  - “Live in harmony with one another…. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people.”  - Luke 1:58 - "Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.” - Romans 12:15 - “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” - Romans 12:12 - “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer.” - Galatians 5:13 - “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” - 2 Corinthians 9:8 - “God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.” - 1 Timothy 5:13 - “... going around from house to house; but even worse, they learn to be gossips and busybodies, talking of things they should not.” - Philippians 2:4 - “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” - Proverbs 27:10 - “Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.” - James 2:15-17 - “If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,' yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? In the same way, faith also, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” - Romans 12:10-11 - “Outdo yourselves in honoring one another. Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” - Romans 10:14 - "But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?”  - Matthew 22:37-39 - "This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”" RELATED LINKS: - EP 78 –  How to Deal with Unneighborly Neighbors  - Free Resource Library  STAY CONNECTED: - Subscribe: Flanders Family Freebies -weekly themed link lists of free resources - Instagram: @flanders_family - follow for more great content - Family Blog: Flanders Family Home Life - parenting tips, homeschool help, printables - Marriage Blog: Loving Life at Home- encouragement for wives, mothers, believers - My Books: Shop Online - find on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble, or through our website

Jesus challenges our understanding of neighborliness through the parable of the Good Samaritan. While religious leaders passed by a wounded man, a Samaritan - someone from a despised group - showed extraordinary compassion. This story redefines 'neighbor' not by cultural, religious, or ethnic boundaries, but by showing mercy to those in need. As disciples of Christ, we must focus less on who qualifies as our neighbor and more on being the best neighbor to anyone God puts in our path. Like a MASH unit positioned near battlefields, we are called to care for all who come our way, regardless of background.

“‘Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?’ Jesus asked. The man replied, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Then Jesus said, ‘Yes, now go and do the same.’” (Luke 10:36–37 NLT) *Enjoying Pastor Greg's devotional podcast? Let us know what you think with this quick survey!* In our last devotion, we looked at one role of ministry that’s key to personal revival: being an ambassador for Christ. Today, we’re going to look at a second role of ministry, also from Luke 10: being a neighbor like Jesus. The great evangelist D. L. Moody once attended a conference on reaching the lost world. Soon, however, he grew frustrated with the proceedings because nothing was being accomplished. None of the attendees had come up with any viable strategies for reaching the lost. Moody, a man of action, decided to make a point. He instructed his song leader, Ira Sankey, to meet him at a certain street corner at 6 PM. At the appointed time, Moody placed a little box on the sidewalk and said to Sankey, “Get up there and start singing.” Sankey had an incredible voice, and soon a crowd gathered to listen to him. When he finished, Moody preached for a few moments. Then he said to the crowd, “I want you to go with me down to the civic auditorium, and I am going to tell you more.” The civic auditorium was where the conference was being held. The conference attendees had left for dinner. Moody led the crowd into the auditorium and started preaching. The place was full. When the attendees returned, Moody stopped preaching and said, “We have to close our meeting because our brothers are here at the conference to talk about how to reach the masses. So let’s all go.” He made his point. You guys can talk about it all day long, but this is how you do it. Moody’s emphasis on “doing” echoed Jesus’ message in the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10. In the parable, a Jewish man is robbed, beaten, and left for dead beside a road. Three travelers encounter the severely injured man. The first is a priest, probably coming from the temple. The second is a temple assistant. Both are well-respected in the religious community. Neither lift a finger to help. The third man is a Samaritan. In Jesus’ day, Jewish people hated Samaritans. They considered Samaritans to be a racially impure and inferior people. Yet it’s the Samaritan who stops to help the man. Not just to offer his thoughts and prayers, but to tend to his wounds, transport him to a nearby inn, and pay for weeks of care. Jesus concluded the parable with a pointed question: “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” (Luke 10:36 NLT). The answer is obvious, of course, but the lesson is lost on many people today. Being a neighbor like Jesus has nothing to do with geographic or social common ground. It has everything to do with getting involved in the lives of other people, meeting their needs, and showing them grace and mercy. Being a neighbor like Jesus means sacrificing our time, energy, and financial resources for the sake of others. Your neighborhood is as large as you choose to make it. Reflection question: What would being a neighbor like Jesus look like in your life? In other cases, children's interventions in the cultural politics, economic projects, and diplomatic endeavors of the interwar period revealed that Latin American children saw themselves as modern, professional, participants in forging inter-American relationships. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. It was a frigid December day in a small logging town in Maine, roughly an hour's drive from the US-Canadian border. And despite the falling snow, Christmas shoppers were out in full force. While most of the shoppers hurried from store to store, a small crowd had gathered in front of the police station. The shoppers watched as an officer stapled a poster to a telephone pole. Then, when he was done, they shuffled closer for a better view. The poster contained a forensic artist's sketch of a middle-aged woman. She had a narrow face, thin nose, glasses, and bangs. And according to the text above the image, the police were looking for this woman in connection with a recent double homicide. The murders were shocking, but they were also the most exciting thing to happen in this part of rural Maine for as long as anyone could remember. So despite the cold, the shoppers stood there studying the sketch and discussing whether it looked like anyone they knew. They were so caught up in their conversation, no one noticed a bundled-up figure hurrying past on the sidewalk. This figure slowed just long enough to glance at the poster and recognize the face in the sketch, which bore a striking resemblance to their own. Then, before anyone could notice them, the figure turned and hurried off into the falling snow.
