There are only three words — and Jesus said them in the middle of a conversation about the end times, almost as an aside. But nothing Jesus says is random. “Remember Lot's wife.” Of the possible 170 women mentioned in the Bible, she is the only one Jesus ever told us to remember. Not Eve. Not Sarah. Not Esther. Not Deborah. Not even his own mother. One woman. Three words. And Christine Caine believes Jesus meant every one of them for you. In week 4 of our summer series, Christine opens Luke 17 and Genesis 19 to ask the question Lot's wife couldn't answer: what happens when your longing for what you're leaving behind becomes greater than your trust in what God has promised ahead? In this episode, Christine Caine unpacks the story of Lot's wife — a woman with no name, a single cameo in the Old Testament, and one of the most arresting warnings in all of scripture. Drawing from Genesis 19:15–26, the talk underscored the certainty of God's word, the spiritual cost of “glancing back” to old sins or attachments, and the rightness and reward of pressing forward in Christ. The instructor wove together scripture (Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 55:10–11; Psalm 103:17–18; Matthew 7:13–14; 1 Peter 5; 1 John 2:15–17; 2 Thessalonians 1:8–9; 2 Timothy 4:7–8; Matthew 28:20; 2 Peter 3:10–12; 1 Thessalonians 5:2–3) with practical examples, including a personal story about leaving a crude group chat and later restoring friendships through honest conversation. "The start of a new year is the traditional time to take stock of our lives and see where we are going, measured against the backdrop of where we have been. I don't want to talk to you about New Year's resolutions, because you only made five of them and you have already broken four. (I give that remaining one just another week.) But I do want to talk to you about the past and the future, not so much in terms of New Year's commitments per se, but more with an eye toward any time of transition and change in your lives—and those moments come virtually every day of our lives. As a scriptural theme for this discussion, I have chosen the second-shortest verse in all of holy scripture. I am told that the shortest verse—a verse that every missionary memorizes and holds ready in case he is called on spontaneously in a zone conference—is John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” Elders, here is a second option, another shortie that will dazzle your mission president in case you are called on two zone conferences in a row. It is Luke 17:32, where the Savior cautions, “Remember Lot's wife.” Hmmm. What did He mean by such an enigmatic little phrase? To find out, I suppose we need to do as He suggested. Let's recall who Lot's wife was. The original story, of course, comes to us out of the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, when the Lord, having had as much as He could stand of the worst that men and women could do, told Lot and his family to flee because those cities were about to be destroyed. “Escape for thy life,” the Lord said, “look not behind thee . . . ; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed” (Genesis 19:17; emphasis added). With less than immediate obedience and more than a little negotiation, Lot and his family ultimately did leave town, but just in the nick of time. The scriptures tell us what happened at daybreak the morning following their escape: The Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities. [Genesis 19:24–25] Then our theme today comes in the next verse. Surely, surely, with the Lord's counsel “look not behind thee” ringing clearly in her ears, Lot's wife, the record says, “looked back,” and she was turned into a pillar of salt. In the time we have this morning, I am not going to talk to you about the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, nor of the comparison the Lord Himself has made to those days and our own time. I am not even going to talk about obedience and disobedience. I just want to talk to you for a few minutes about looking back and looking ahead. One of the purposes of history is to teach us the lessons of life. George Santayana, who should be more widely read than he is on a college campus, is best known for saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (Reason in Common Sense, vol. 1 of The Life of Reason [1905–1906]). So, if history is this important—and it surely is—what did Lot's wife do that was so wrong? As something of a student of history, I have thought about that and offer this as a partial answer. Apparently what was wrong with Lot's wife was that she wasn't just looking back; in her heart she wanted to go back. It would appear that even before they were past the city limits, she was already missing what Sodom and Gomorrah had offered her. As Elder Maxwell once said, such people know they should have their primary residence in Zion, but they still hope to keep a summer cottage in Babylon (see Larry W. Gibbons, “Wherefore, Settle This in Your Hearts,” Ensign, November 2006, 102; also Neal A. Maxwell, A Wonderful Flood of Light [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1990], 47). It is possible that Lot's wife looked back with resentment toward the Lord for what He was asking her to leave behind. We certainly know that Laman and Lemuel were resentful when Lehi and his family were commanded to leave Jerusalem. So it isn't just that she looked back; she looked back longingly. In short, her attachment to the past outweighed her confidence in the future. Today, let us continue here in Philippians chapter 2, verses 3 and 4. In the firsttwo verses Paul has been talking first about the right motives for spiritualunity and a submissive mind (vs. 1-2a). Then he talked about the right marks ofspiritual unity and a submissive mind (v. 2b). Now we are talking about theright means—the right means of spiritual unity (vs. 3-4). First,in verse 3a, Paul speaks of the negative and he says, “Let nothing be donethrough selfish ambition or conceit.” That is the negative. We are to makesure we do everything in humility and that we do not have vain conceit as we dowhat God wants us to do with a submissive mind and with unity in the Spirit inthe body of Christ. Nowin verses 3b-4, Paul goes on and deals with the positive and the practical. “…butin lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each ofyou look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interest ofothers.” This is humility in action. Humilityis not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. OswaldChambers put it this way: “It is not thinking of yourself at all.”Because as you are displaying the mind of Christ, living for Him, servingothers, and putting others first, you do not have time to think about yourself. Yourprayers can, of course, be personal, asking God for grace and help in time ofneed. But at the same time, your prayers will mostly be intercessory. You willbe concerned about the needs, hurts, pains, and sorrows of others. This ishumility in action. “Esteemingothers better than yourselves” does not mean pretending others are morecapable or more gifted. It means choosing to treat them as more important. I liketo put it this way: Make sure every person—from the youngest baby and child tothe oldest person around you—is treated as a person of tremendous value. Theywere created in the image of God, and God loves them. With God's love, weshould love them. And when you meet a believer, you are meeting Christ Jesus! RememberSaul's (Paul's) experience in Acts 9:4-5: “Then he fell to the ground, andheard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecutingMe?" And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said,"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick againstthe goads." In other words when you mistreat a believer, Jesus Himselfhas said that you are mistreating Him! Think about that! Myfriend, this practically means rejoicing when others succeed, honoring themabove yourself, and wanting what is best for them no matter who they are. Thatis what you pray for. That is what you desire. You see them, as Oswald Chamberssays, as they are in Christ. This is exactly what Jesus did. ThenPaul adds, “Look out for the interests of others.” This does not mean ignoringyour own needs. It means not stopping there. It means living with a broaderperspective. Lot lived for himself. Remember Lot, Abraham's nephew? He chosethe land that looked like Egypt, near Sodom and Gomorrah, and he losteverything. Abraham chose to go the other way, wherever Lot did not go. Helived for others and became a blessing to the nations. Myfriend, this is the submissive mind—not me first, but others next. When achurch lives this way, joy overflows, unity is preserved, and the gospeladvances with power. Here is a simple challenge this week: Ask the Lord to showyou one specific way to put this into practice. Maybe it is yielding apreference. Maybe it is encouraging someone you struggle with. Remember Romans12:21: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Jesus said thesame thing in Matthew 5:43–44. Pray for someone who maybe irritates you. Putthis into practice, and if we do that, we will fulfill Paul's joy. Remember hesaid, “Do these things; fulfill my joy.”

Sermon Notes 5/3/26 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” 22 And he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.[i] 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. 35 There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”[j] 37 And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse[k] is, there the vultures[l] will gather.” Luke: 17: 20-37 We, innately, have a longing for a king and powerful leader and the influence that brings to us individually. . In this verse, Jesus starts with addressing those on the outside first - the Pharisees - telling them the kingdom is not a physical place, or one of worldly influence. Jesus says that his kingdom does not display what we assume kingdoms should. If we go looking for the kingdom of God in the places we expect a kingdom to be. Any kingdom we find that promises everything we want, and claims to have Jesus, is nothing more than a house of cards. Instead, the kingdom of God is in the “midst of you.” The Pharisees are told, point blank, that the Kingdom is not within themselves, but rather standing physically among them at that very moment! It is Christ Jesus! The kingdom of God is not locked up in political power, or a location, but in a “Who.” To see the kingdom of God, look to Jesus and not take our eyes off of Him. . Then Jesus turns his attention to the disciples. He uses this as a moment to warn us. Hardship has a tendency to make us desperate. Struggle will increase, and in your longing, false prophets will tell us “the end of your struggle is over there.” But Jesus tells us, DON’T GET DISTRACTED! Many of us define God’s will by the path of least resistance. That’s why we’re so easily distracted and lead astray. In our desperation and longing for Christ, we are easily distracted by counterfeit christs who offer us ease, and require nothing of us. Stay. On. The. Path. Don’t turn to deception in our exhaustion, because that’s when deception is at its strongest. Christ gives us several descriptions to protect us! He tells us when He comes back, everyone will know. It will be undebatable. There will be NO room for skepticism. None will foresee it, but everyone will see it at once. He also tells us that His return will come with suffering and persecution. Jesus tells us His kingdom will come through suffering. So, the return of Christ will NOT come with ease and everything we want. So we should not lose focus on Christ in our own suffering. When you suffer for Jesus, it doesn’t mean you are outside of God. It means that you are most likely, right where you need to be. And we should remain undistracted by the normal good of life. The pursuit of the normal good life can be incredibly distracting. When Christ comes back, life will be normal. We’re living, working, playing, eating and drinking, and we’re in relationships. It’s SUPER easy to build a life without Christ. People think that there’s going to be a lead up to the return of Christ - things changing, stuff start shutting down. But it’s going to be abrupt. That’s what Christ is telling us here. The normal good life carries the ability to mask our pursuit of Christ. Jesus will one day show up, and the life we live with is the life we will be judge by. The normal good life doesn’t sound too evil. But if we’re hypnotized by it, and we have no energy placed in the pursuit of Jesus when He shows up, then we’ll lose our life and the life we hoped to live. Lastly, the arrival of the Kingdom will cause separation. Many, in the end, will cling to the life behind us. We shouldn’t. In order to say hello to the kingdom of God, we must say goodbye to the kingdom of men. And not be surprised when we must cut ties with people who love us and things we love. The king you were made to long for is not any person who exists in your time. You were made to long for Christ. Keep your eyes fixed on Him through the distractions.
Sermon Notes 5/3/26 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” 22 And he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.[i] 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. Remember Lot's wife- We can know all about the return of Christ, but it will not make any difference if it is just knowledge without action. Lot's wife knew about the judgment that was coming, but her heart longed for worldly things.

On This Week at Charlestown Road, Jason and Roger think through Jesus' warning in Luke 17:32, “Remember Lot's wife,” and what it still means for us today.
This fascinating sermon begins with a contrast between Abraham and Lot, so much so that Spurgeon reminds us that his text is not, “Remember Lot,” but, “Remember Lot's wife.” However, by the end of the sermon he has deliberately returned to the first idea, and in between he has made a careful survey of the relationship between Lot and his wife before concentrating on the way in which she perished in her sin. That brings him back to Lot, because one of the themes of this sermon is the way in which the lives of a husband and a wife are closely intertwined, and have a mutual spiritual impact. More specifically, Spurgeon emphasises the responsibility of a godly man to lead his family righteously. A sermon like this involves some ‘reading into the white spaces' of the history, some holy speculation and careful surmise, but the overall effect is to bring the teaching of this episode close to home, and to force husbands, with their wives, to consider carefully the effect of their example and instruction.
