Remember Lot's wife- We can know all about the return of Christ, but it will not make any difference if it is just knowledge without action. Lot's wife knew about the judgment that was coming, but her heart longed for worldly things.

Luke 17:20-18:14New King James Version:The Coming of the Kingdom20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, ‘See here!' or ‘See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”22 Then He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look here!' or ‘Look there!' Do not go after them or follow them. 24 For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.31 “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”37 And they answered and said to Him, “Where, Lord?”So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”The Parable of the Persistent Widow18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.' 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.' ”6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will loseit, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.  Luke17:30-36 describes what will occur when Jesus Christ returns in judgment todefeat His enemies and establish His kingdom on earth (Rev. 19:11-20:6).Believers in every age of the church can take warning from these verses, butthey apply in a special way to Israel at the end of the age (see Matt.24:29-44). When Jesus comes for His church and takes it to heaven, it willhappen "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" (1 Cor.15:52). Nobody taking part in the rapture of the church need worry about beingon a housetop or in a field and wanting to get something out of the house! However, when the Lord returns to the earth, His coming will first be precededby a "sign" in heaven (Matt. 24:30-31), and some people might try tohurry home to rescue something. "Remember Lot's wife!" Theverb taken in Luke 17:34-36 does not mean "taken to heaven" but"taken away in judgment" (Matt. 24:36-41). The person"left" is a believer who enters into the kingdom. Noah and his familywere "left" to enjoy a new beginning, while the whole population ofthe earth was "taken" in the Flood. In spite of their sins, Lot andhis daughters were "left" while the people in Sodom and Gomorrah were"taken" when the fire and brimstone destroyed the cities. Thefact that it is night in Luke 17:34 but day in Luke 17:35-36 indicates that thewhole world will be involved in the return of Jesus Christ in glory. "Behold,He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him" (Rev. 1:7). Threetimes the disciples had heard Jesus talk about people being "taken"and "left," so they asked Him a most logical question: "Where,Lord?" Our Lord's reply has the sound of a familiar proverb: "Justas the eagles [and vultures, Matt. 24:28] gather at a corpse, so the lost willbe gathered together for judgment." The description of the last battlein Revelation 19:17-21 certainly parallels the image of carrion-eating birdsgorging themselves on flesh. Inother words, when the Lord Jesus returns to judge His enemies, there will be aseparation of the saved and the lost. Whether it be day or night, whetherpeople are working or sleeping, the separation and judgment will come. Thosewho are saved will be left to enter the glorious kingdom, while those who arelost will be taken away in judgment. Eventhough the primary interpretation of these verses is for Israel in the endtimes, they do emphasize for the church the importance of being ready whenJesus returns. We must not be like Lot's wife whose heart was so in Sodom thatshe looked back in spite of the angels' warning (Gen. 19:17, 26). There aremany professed Christians today whose plans would be interrupted if Jesusreturned! (note 1 Thes. 5:1-11) Our Lord's warning in Luke 17:33 findsparallels in Matthew 10:39; Luke 9:24; and John 12:25, and is a fundamentalprinciple of the Christian life. The only way to save your life is to lose itfor the sake of Christ and the Gospel. Jesuspictured civilization as a "rotting corpse" that would one day beripe for judgment. The discerning believer sees evidence of this on every handand realizes that the "days of Noah" and the "days of Lot"are soon on us. Our Lord can return for His church at any time, so we are notlooking for signs; but we do know that "coming events cast their shadowsbefore." As we see many of these things begin to come to pass (Luke21:28), we know that His return is nearing. Arewe looking for His return, and do we really want to see Him come? Remember, Lot'swife, and don't look back but be looking up! Godbless.

Various reasons: to prevent embarrassment, the person is unknown or sometimes used as a literary device. Examples of the later could be to 1) elevate a universal significance as with the Shuminite woman, which provided a lesson in hospitality, 2) bring divine action to the foreground or 3) deliver a dose of irony. Today's lesson focused on 3 unnamed women in the Bible: Lot's wife: turned into a pillar of salt. She made a choice that had consequences. Luke 17:32-33 Jephthah's daughter: a rash vow causes his daughter to be a burnt offering. The widow of Nain: Jesus demonstrated compassion for her situation. Points for home: Remember Lot's wife Pursue God Don't be an idiot Never doubt the compassions of God Listen to Mark teach insights into unnamed women in the Bible. This fascinating sermon begins with a contrast between Abraham and Lot, so much so that Spurgeon reminds us that his text is not, “Remember Lot,” but, “Remember Lot's wife.” However, by the end of the sermon he has deliberately returned to the first idea, and in between he has made a careful survey of the relationship between Lot and his wife before concentrating on the way in which she perished in her sin. That brings him back to Lot, because one of the themes of this sermon is the way in which the lives of a husband and a wife are closely intertwined, and have a mutual spiritual impact. More specifically, Spurgeon emphasises the responsibility of a godly man to lead his family righteously. A sermon like this involves some ‘reading into the white spaces' of the history, some holy speculation and careful surmise, but the overall effect is to bring the teaching of this episode close to home, and to force husbands, with their wives, to consider carefully the effect of their example and instruction. In Genesis we have been reading the account of the flood that wiped out all the descendants of Adam and Eve except Noah, his wife, 3 sons and their wives.  Archaeologists have come across many ancient records of other nations with memories of a massive flood, although these accounts are embellished with lots of fanciful features. Both Jesus [Luke 17 v.27] and Peter [1 Peter 3 v.20] refer to the flood as an historic fact and as a lesson of God acting as a result of total ungodliness.  The end of Genesis Ch. 7 tells how “the waters prevailed on the earth for 150 days” blotting out all life and covering all the mountains. The next chapter (8) begins in an odd way in most Bibles. We read “But God remembered Noah and all the beasts …. “ It should not be understood as meaning God had forgotten them and suddenly remembered!! We humans sometimes do that! It is a translation of the same Hebrew word as we read 2 days ago in the Psalms, “what is man that you are mindful of him”   [Psa.8v.4]  We read in Malachi last week how God has written a “book of remembrance” [3 v.16], those whom he bears in mind, he is the Creator who sees and knows all things. .  How utterly wonderful to have the Creator bear you in mind!  Thus when Noah is again on dry land God makes a covenant with him that “never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” [9 v.9]   The rainbow is the sign to confirm this covenant – and of course the earth was not destroyed, only the people. The letter to the Hebrews praises Noah for his faith [Ch.11 v.7]. We read, “By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household … and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith”  Faith is an active principle that causes you to do things. Jesus warns us that conditions on earth when he is about to return will be like they were in Noah's day and Lot's day, when “they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building” [Luke 17 v.28]  There is nothing wrong with that, but this is what they totally focussed their lives upon!  Then Jesus says, “Remember Lot's wife!”  Be mindful of what happened to her [Genesis 19 v.26] when she was reluctant to leave that way of life. Jesus then comments [Luke 17 v.33] “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it”    How do we understand that?  Well, Lot lost all that he had, and so did Noah, he did not seek to preserve that way of life, he put no value on it.  Things which have everlasting value must be in the forefront of our minds –  the way we live our lives will show this..

Since we're right around the corner from The Kerygma Summit '24 where 1,500 ministry leaders and Bible-loving chicks from three different countries are gathering here in Franklin, TN for a 3-Day spiritual boot camp, I thought it'd be fitting to spend today's conversation on Back Porch Theology with one of the most gifted Bible expositors and evangelists I've ever met, who just so happens to be one of my best friends, Christine Caine. And I can't wait for y'all to lean into this episode because Chris is going to wrap historical context and practical theology around one single verse in the Gospel according to Luke that can have a resurrective kind of impact on our future. In Luke 17:32, Jesus spoke three interesting words: "Remember Lot's wife." We don't know her name, history, or all the details of her story. All we know is that when she was fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah with her husband Lot and their two daughters, she intentionally disobeyed God's clear command to not look back and was consequently zapped into a pillar of salt, making her the first Scary Spice several millennia before the girl band borrowed that moniker. Mrs. Lot is one of the more infamous women in biblical narrative and out of the 170 women referred to in Holy Writ, she's the only one Jesus told us to remember. If you're feeling stuck this season – mired in all-too-familiar feelings of shame, discouragement, resentment, unforgiveness, apathy or just wishing the reality of your life bore more resemblance to the life of your dreams, I believe today's conversation could be the catalyst Holy Spirit uses to lift you out of the spiritual doldrums and back into the hope-filled future God promises for all of us through the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah. So please grab a cup of your favorite beverage and your Bible – unless you're weaving through a herd of anxious cows on a scooter of course – and come hang out on the porch with us.

Last week, I gave a speech to a group of CEO's and I think it was the first time I wasn't liked by the audience. A good portion of the audience seemed uncomfortable as I talked to them about the big sort. I shared how America is being sorted psychologically, psychographically, and spiritually. I do think there is a final sorting of America taking place and I want to dig into why I believe this is. To me, this is all coming to a very binary decision, to follow God or don't. It all becomes very spiritual.I don't' think most people see the level that we have fallen to as a nation. A GENERATION OF PEOPLE WHO WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH BIG MEDICINEWhat does God's Word say? Luke 17:22-36  22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!' or ‘Here he is!' Do not go running off after them. 24 For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot's wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”  Episode 1,531 Links:Is The New ‘Civil War' Movie Another Hollywood Exercise In Leftist Propaganda?Who's Leaving Where? The problem is there's a normalcy bias. I was invited to give a speech to a group of CEOs in Spokane. I am addressing something called the Big Sort and the parallel economy. What I want these CEOs to understand is what is going culturally through a political and spiritual lens. We have corrupt ideas that have sorted Americans into different groups. Corrupt policies have physically sorted Americans. Corrupt education has sorted Americans physically and behaviorally. Many will no longer trust doctors. And, the media has sorted people and created a very diffuse network of influencers. It is important for these CEOs to understand that they will have to learn to play in this society. Then, there is the eternal sort. In Luke 17, the Bible demonstrates this permanent great sort. What Does God's Word Say?Luke 17:22-3722 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!' or ‘Here he is!'
