In Gospel of Mark chapter 11, we encounter a King who refuses to fit our expectations. As Jesus rides into Jerusalem to shouts of “Hosanna,” the crowd waves palms and projects their hopes of political victory onto Him. But this is no campaign rally—this is a confrontation. From the fig tree with leaves but no fruit, to the temple full of activity but empty of prayer, Jesus exposes a surface-level faith that looks alive from a distance yet withers up close. The message is clear: religion without repentance is nothing but leaves. Trusting Jesus isn't meant to fit neatly into our routines, playlists, or Sunday schedules—it's meant to overturn tables in our hearts and transform us from the inside out. In this powerful teaching, we're reminded that what isn't rooted in Christ will ultimately wither away. Jesus invites us beyond performative faith into a life marked by real fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Prayer isn't about bending God to our will; it's about aligning our hearts with His. Mountains move not because we name and claim, but because we trust and surrender. The question before us is simple but searching: are we asking Jesus to fit our lives, or are we surrendering to let Him change them? May our faith be more than leaves. May it bear fruit that lasts.

In this sermon, Jesus message to the church in Thyatira is meant to encourage faithfulness in the face of strong pressure to compromise devotion to Him with work, security, and cultural expectations. In this sermon, believers are called to trust Jesus fully with their future, rejecting God-and living, because He alone is the true Son of God and promises both victory and His presence to those who remain faithful.

One of the most ancient questions in the world was asked by Job in the old testament - "How can a man be just with God?" Or maybe we could say "How can I have my sins forgiven? How can I know that I will be in heaven?" The Lord Jesus told a story to illustrate what the answer was. You see, the answer to God's ancient question is Christ himself. It is through Christ that we are justified and cleared of all guilt. It is through Christ that we have peace with God.

In John 7:53–8:11 and 8:12–32, we encounter Jesus not only as teacher and defender, but as the very life of God walking among us. This episode invites us to consider the Main Point: Life with God means trusting that Jesus is God's life embodied on earth—more than we trust ourselves. If Jesus is the Light of the World, then His light reframes our instincts, our reasoning, and even our view of ourselves. We close with two reflection questions:Where am I leaning on my own understanding?God, adjust my sight with Your light—where are You leading me, and to whom?
Pastor Mark challenges us to choose calling over comfort. Based on Matthew 14, this sermon reminds us that true faith begins where comfort ends—and that the safest place to be is wherever Jesus is.

Scripture Text: Luke 5:1-11 Sunday, August 17, 2025 Sermon Discussion Guides Morningside Church, Tallahassee (morningsidetlh.org)
Throughout the first half of his gospel, Mark repeatedly shows us how the crowds and the disciples misunderstood Jesus' identity. Last week, we reached a key moment when Peter and the disciples finally recognized and confessed that Jesus is the Christ. Mark introduced this turning point by showing Jesus heal a blind man in two stages. Jesus' first touch caused the blind man to see, but he could not see clearly. The second touch healed the man completely (8:22-26). Just as the blind man, Peter, and the disciples could now see that Jesus is the Christ, they still did not fully understand what the Christ had come to do. When Jesus tells them He came to suffer and die, Peter rebukes Him. The disciples expected the Messiah to be an earthly conqueror who would bring victory, abundance, and glory, as in the days of Solomon. Following Him would mean reigning with Him as He conquered the occupying armies and led Israel to fulfill God's covenant promises. Hearing that the "son of man" must suffer and die was not what they expected. We ended in verses 31-33 with Jesus chastising Peter for denying that the Messiah must suffer. This Sunday, Jesus continues teaching that not only must the Messiah suffer and die, but following Him also means walking that same path. Trusting Jesus is to follow Him as He walks the way of the cross. This passage speaks to everyone who confesses that Jesus is the Christ, as Jesus says, "If anyone would come after me..." It is not just for the elite Christians or the 12 disciples. Jesus says that anyone following Him must deny themselves and take up their own cross. After making this statement, Jesus gives four "for" statements (v. 35-38) explaining why it is necessary to take up the cross and deny self. On Sunday, we will unpack these statements and show that the way of the cross is the only path of true discipleship. This is a crucial section in Mark's Gospel, and from this point, the focus shifts to what it means to follow Jesus. To prepare for Sunday, read Mark 8:27-9:1 so you understand the context of what we will examine in 8:34-9:1. I. What Following Jesus Entails (v. 34) II. Why Following Jesus Is Necessary (v. 35-38) III. Where Following Jesus Leads (9:1)

Episode SummaryIn this insightful episode, Dr. Jim Van Gelderen reveals one of Satan's most effective tactics: convincing believers to trust in themselves. Through a gripping story from a Vietnam War veteran and powerful truths from Ephesians 6, he shows how self-reliance—rather than strength—is often our downfall in spiritual warfare. If you've ever felt defeated despite trying your hardest, this message will open your eyes to the real source of strength: moment-by-moment dependence on Jesus Christ.Topics DiscussedRevival updates from Michigan and upcoming ministry in ColoradoA wartime illustration of enemy deceptionWhy self-dependence is spiritual sabotageWhat “be strong in the Lord” really means (Ephesians 6:10)The role of English grammar in understanding the BibleHow human strength fails under spiritual pressurePersonal reflections on a lifetime of weakness and God's faithfulnessPrayer as the breath of dependenceThe connection between pride, self-reliance, and defeatHow to face spiritual battles with real powerKey TakeawaysSatan doesn't need to overpower you—he just needs you to trust yourself.Real strength isn't self-generated.
