Sermon originally preached March 12, 2017. If you’re looking for black or white answer to politics here, I don’t think you will find it. If you’re looking for peace with politics, I think you WILL find it.

Pastor Jared Chrestman continues with Part 42 of the current series that is an epic journey through the New Testament Gospel of Mark, verse by verse. The book of Mark was most likely the first one written, and is generally attributed to John Mark, a close associate of Peter, and also of Paul and Barnabas. The Gospel of Mark is all about Jesus and the good news (Gospel) of the kingdom of God. Who was Jesus really, and why exactly did he come? Last time Pastor Marc spoke on the parable of the leased vineyard. In today's message Pastor Jared teaches through Jesus' answer to the question "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" How did Jesus address the issue of politics in His day? Pastor Bobby teaches us about it from Mark 12.
In the book of Mark we see Jesus’ enemies trying to trap him with a question about paying taxes. In his reply, Jesus reveals three important lessons about God’s priorities and the created order He established. Listen as Pastor Jeremy teaches from Mark 12:13-17 in the message: Ownership, Direction and Belonging: OWNERSHIP – God owns us. We belong to Him and are made in His image. DIRECTION – God’s ownership of your life determines your destiny. BELONGING – If God owns you, then He is responsible to keep you. You can be assured that the Good Shepherd is going to take good care of you.

An important part of serving God involves understanding and submitting to governing authorities in ways that honor Him.
Rev. Stone continues in our series on the Gospel of Mark. How does our identity in Christ shape how we live? We find ourselves in a tension between our identities as Christians and the government and culture around us. Four implications: 1. God has established legitimate government authorities so we should both honor our leaders and obey the laws of the state. 2 There is a distinction between church and state. 3. there is always a tension between our citizenship in the Kingdom of God and our national citizenship. 4. We need to render our lives to God.
Sermon on Mark 12:13-17, where the enemies of the Lord Jesus once again seek to trap Him in His words, only to walk away confounded. Here Jesus addresses the proper relation between the church & the state, and tells us of our obligation both to the state (e.g. taxes) and to God (everything).

Today, we take most of our pictures on our phones. And we see the image instantly. Very few of us, if any, develop the pictures ourselves. However, if you did, you would discover the time-consuming and delicate process required to achieve the desired outcome - a perfectly developed picture. The photographer takes his time when developing a picture. In the same way, it takes time for God to continue His work in developing one into the image of His Son. Who are you during this time. Do you have the same patience.

How do we as Christians navigate the racial and political tensions that exist in our world, our nation, our homes and even our church. As we constantly find ourself facing situations where it feels like every choice we make has the potential to be the wrong one? In Mark 12:13-17 we see Jesus facing a similar problem and with 13 words, He turns our world upside down. "Render to Caesar what is Caesar's and render to God what is God's"
