This morning, we will continue our Lenten series, The Seven Last Words of Jesus, by examining Jesus' last words from the Gospel of John, "I thirst." In these words, Jesus' humanity and divinity are on display, as well as the deep desire and faithfulness that brought him to those final moments. As we worship, we will reflect on the nature of faithfulness and how we bear witness to the pain and thirst of the world. Sermon on John 19:28-29, delivered by the Reverend Mary Newberg Gale on April 6th, 2025.

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss how for many Americans, Easter is one of the few times in the year they show a willingness to attend a church service. If they do, they'll likely hear about an empty tomb and the significance of the resurrection of Jesus thousands of years later. For many, the hope of new life in Jesus is enough to propel them to faith or to a deeper commitments to Jesus; but for others, they may be left with lingering questions that will serve as stumbling blocks to faith. Questions like: So what? How is this relevant for my life? And can I even believe this happened? So the question for the church is how are we going to answer those questions - what evidence can we offer for the resurrection of Jesus? Episode Links There are several series that Dr. White has given at Mecklenburg Community Church if you want to take a deeper dive into the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion and His resurrection. These include: “The Passion,” “Risen,” “Seven Last Words of Jesus,” and “Why Believe.” And in case you did not know, past messages given by Dr. White are arranged by category at Church & Culture HERE. You'll find series on specific books of the Bible, on evangelism and apologetics, cultural topics and more. When discussing Jesus' death on the cross in today's episode, Dr. White mentioned an article from the Journal of the American Medical Association written by Dr. William D. Edwards and titled “On the Physical Death of Jesus Christ.” For those interested in reading this article, you can find it HERE. “The Resurrection of the Son of God” by N.T. Wright was another resource that Dr. White discussed, and you can find his book HERE. And one more book that we'd strongly recommend is written by Dr. White himself: Christianity for People Who Aren't Christians. It offers incredibly helpful explanations of the most common questions that people have when it comes to the Christian faith. You can find it on Amazon HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. On today's Open Line Tuesday, Fr. Wade help us prepare for the Easter Triduum with an insight on The Seven Last Words of Christ and the seven times our Lord shed his blood.
Sermon from the pulpit of Falls Baptist Church
This morning, as we celebrate Palm Sunday, we will hear Jesus' words from the Gospel of John again. In John 19:30, after receiving the sour wine, Jesus said, "It is finished." Those standing at the foot of the cross would have certainly been confused. What exactly was finished? As we worship, we will explore the tension of Jesus' words spoken into our world and our lives. How is God's power made known in endings, and how do the words of our Lord prepare us for Holy Week? Sermon on John 19:30, delivered by the Reverend David J. Powers on April 13th, 2025.
"The Words from the Cross: 7 last sayings of Jesus"--5th Sunday of Lent (C) Lenten preaching series: "the way to Calvary" FatherSteve.net
This morning, as we mark the midpoint of our Lenten journey, we will hear Jesus' cry from the cross captured in the Gospel of Matthew, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Our Lord will express his sense of abandonment by recalling the words of the psalmist found in Psalm 22. As we worship, we will reflect on both the agonizing nature of abandonment and the purpose of the words Jesus chooses to express his heartbreak. Sermon on Matthew 27:45-46, delivered by the Reverend David J. Powers on March 30th, 2025.
As we mark the third Sunday of Lent, we will turn our attention to the words of Jesus from the Gospel of John. While he hangs on the cross, Jesus looks down to see the beloved disciple standing with his mother, Mary. Jesus says to Mary, "Woman, here is your son," and to the beloved disciple he says, "Here is your mother." As we worship, we will wrestle with the significance of Jesus naming a new relationship between his mother and the beloved disciple. The scripture lesson will teach us about the power of relationships born from the shared experience of Jesus. How does shared suffering bind us to one another, and how do the resurrecting power of God shape our relationships? Sermon on John 19:26-27, delivered by the Reverend David J. Powers on March 23, 2025.
The Seven Last Words of Jesus From The Cross: Lenten Conference #3 From Mercy to Completion: A Journey Through the Seven Last Words This conference is a theological reflection centered on the Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross, . . . . . . contemplated as we Prepare Our Hearts for Holy Week observances. This reflection emphasizes the theological and spiritual significance of these words, portraying them not merely as the last utterances of a dying man but as intentional, revelatory statements that encapsulate God's mercy, justice, and salvific plan. Key themes include: * The weight of last words and how they convey enduring significance. * Jesus as the full revelation of God, more than just the Bible as a text. * The Cross as both pulpit and altar, a place of suffering and profound proclamation. * The structure and liturgical framing of Jesus' crucifixion within the hours of prayer, aligning with scriptural tradition. * The seven words reveal both divine truth and human nature, each framed by prayer and deeply meaningful: 1. “Father, forgive them…” – a prayer of mercy. 2. “Today you will be with me in paradise” – a gift of salvation to the repentant. 3. “Woman, behold your son…” – establishing new spiritual relationships. 4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” – the cry of all human suffering. 5. “I thirst” – expressing a longing to fulfill God's will. 6. “It is finished” – the completion of redemption. 7. “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” – returning to divine rest. The conference weaves biblical symbolism, liturgical tradition, and pastoral insight, helping us all to understand that these words were not only spoken to those present but continue to speak across time to all humanity. We proclaim your death and profess your resurrection until you come, …. and there is various formula by which we say that, but the sentiment is all the same. The mystery of faith is the victorious death and resurrection of the Lord who will come again. And so, then if we look at The Cross as the high point of revelation, it is not simply then a matter of saying that's Jesus' suffering for our sins and saving us. It is also recognizing God is saying something to us during The Seven Last Words of Jesus on The Cross!

How can I approach Lent with a spirit of hope? What do I need to repent of this Lent? Discussion Questions: What is your current understanding of the Jubilee? How have you experienced interior miracles from the Lord? What stuck out to you from Dr. Bergsma's statement: “The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a perpetual Jubilee”? What is a miracle you want to pray for this Lent? Quote to Ponder: “I'm convinced in my heart that the proper response to the announcement of Jubilee 2025 should be joy, hope, and excitement. Lived well, this Jubilee Year can be a moment of miracle and grace for all of us, a kind of yearlong spiritual Christmas season in which we daily awake to open the gifts of grace that God our Father so lovingly gives us.” (Dr. John Bergsma) Scripture for Lectio: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.” (Isaiah 61:1-4) Sponsor - CORDA: CORDA translates the stories of the saints into scents, and handcrafts those scents into gorgeous Catholic candles.
