Welcome to Day 2707 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2707 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 84:1-12– Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2707 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2707 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today's Wisdom Nugget is titled: A Thirst for Your Presence – The Pilgrim's Joyful Journey - A Trek Through Psalm 84:1-12 Guthrie Chamberlain: Welcome to Wisdom-Trek, your compass for navigating the profound landscapes of faith and life. I'm your guide, Guthrie Chamberlain, and today, we begin a new and deeply moving journey, a beautiful pilgrimage through Psalm 84 in the New Living Translation, encompassing its entirety, verses 1 through 12. Psalm 84 is one of the most beloved psalms in the Psalter. It is attributed to the Korahites, a family of Levites who were gatekeepers and musicians in the Temple. It is a psalm of pilgrimage, a song of ascent, meant to be sung by those making their way up to Jerusalem for one of the three major annual festivals—Passover, Pentecost, or the Feast of Tabernacles. This psalm is a beautiful and welcome contrast to the communal laments we've recently explored. After the national despair of Psalm 79 and the urgent pleas for restoration in Psalm 80, Psalm 84 bursts forth with a joyous and profound yearning for God's presence. It shifts our focus from the desolation of a city to the spiritual longing of a soul, reminding us that even in times of national turmoil, the faithful heart finds its ultimate desire in God Himself and in the joy of drawing near to Him. This psalm is a timeless ode to the incomparable value of God's dwelling place and the blessings that flow from His presence. So, let's join the psalmist on this pilgrimage, feeling the heart of a traveler yearning for home, a home found only in the presence of God. The Soul's Deep Thirst for God (Reads Psalm 84:1-4 NLT) How lovely is your Tabernacle, O Lord of Heaven's Armies. My soul longs, yes, faints with longing for your courts. My heart and body cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds a nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven's Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises. Interlude Guthrie Chamberlain: The psalm begins with an exclamation of pure admiration for God's dwelling place: "How lovely is your Tabernacle, O Lord of Heaven's Armies." "Tabernacle" here refers to God's sanctuary, the Temple in Jerusalem. "Lovely" (yādîd) implies something dear, beloved, and full of affection. The psalmist is expressing a deep, heartfelt love for this physical space, not for the building itself, but for what it represents—the tangible presence of God. The title "Lord of Heaven's Armies" (Yahweh Sabaoth), used three times in this psalm, is significant. It reminds us that this beloved...

Our friend, physicist and economist Erald Kolasi, stops by the Macro N Cheese clubhouse to talk with Steve about the profound effects of AI on the energy grid, water resources, and societal infrastructure. The discussion focuses primarily on large-scale corporate AI, such as generative AI. Erald's work bridges physics, economics, and ecology, revealing how AI's rapid expansion is not just a technological phenomenon but a biophysical crisis – one that's easy to overlook. Cloud is such a gentle word. Diaphanous. It sounds harmless. Lovely, even.“When you're in front of your computer and you're just typing away and you're asking these systems to do all these magical things for you, it can seem like it comes out of nowhere. But no, in reality, all of this stuff takes enormous energy.” AI's dematerialized facade obscures its physical infrastructure. It's a classic capitalist contradiction where "progress" accelerates ecological breakdown. Erald and Steve talk about the race to the bottom, as states and municipalities trade public health for tax revenue. Regulatory enforcement is absent. While exploiting labor and plundering nature, the costs are socialized as these companies use public water and energy grids. Elon Musk's xAI Colossus is based in Tennessee. (Remember the TVA, that impressive example of depression-era federal works? Help yourself, Elon.) It's not just that they use public water and energy, it's the vast and growing amounts of these resources, as Erald explains. The conversation also touches on the AI arms race, as the US competes with China, using “national security” as an excuse to justify resource wars. From energy consumption to water depletion, from labor displacement to geopolitical tensions, this episode exposes the contradictions of AI under a system that prioritizes profit over sustainability. Erald Kolasi is a writer and researcher focusing on the nexus between energy, technology, economics, complex systems, and ecological dynamics. His book, The Physics of Capitalism, came out from Monthly Review Press in February 2025. He received his PhD in Physics from George Mason University in 2016. Jack Cashill-Ron Brown's Body / Blood Thirst: Alan WarrenThe mysterious death of Ron Brown has caused much controversy and suspicion, and in this investigative book, Cashill takes a close look at Brown's checkered career as Clinton fund-raiser and commerce secretary and consequently exposes the Clintons' dirty, relentless practices for getting financial backing. Cashill answers the most trenchant questions surrounding Brown's rise and fall: Why did his plane crash? Why did the White House suppress an investigation? What was the purpose of Brown's trade missions? And what larger forces caused the Clintons to seek international cash? Using the case of Ron Brown's untimely death as a touchstone for the Clintons' unseemly and unsavory practices in the White House, Cashill explores the seedy depths of the most corrupt adminstration in American history during its two most desperate years and focuses directly on the machinations of the direst threat to today's political scene, Hillary Clinton.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

I would also like to mention a poetical phrase, one of Prabhupāda's penchant for phraseology that especially lends itself to mantras and the brief presentation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness in such a way that people can assimilate it that I found at text number SB 10.1.34, in the second paragraph. Prabhupāda writes, "The entire world is suffering because of spiritual thirst." I don't know about you, but I hate being thirsty. Sometimes I wake up at night and I'm thirsty, and it's a real bummer. So if there's thirst, that means thirst can be quenched. If anybody wanted to know why people are anxious? Why people are morose? Why is there morosity in the world? Why is there anxiety in the world? What is the cure for it all? It's to quench the thirst with Kṛṣṇa kathā. And once people are in the shelter of the sound vibration, "satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ" or "mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ." Kṛṣṇa says, "If you're in the association of mahātmās (great souls), what are they doing? "Satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ taj-joṣaṇād āśv apavarga-vartmani śraddhā ratir bhaktir anukramiṣyati (SB 3.25.25)." Kapiladeva says, "Here's what devotees do. They're always engaged in hearing and chanting about Kṛṣṇa." Satāṁ prasaṅgāt, if you sit with sādhus (saints), you are going to hear something that is spiritually melodious, and it's no ordinary melody. It's not a titillation of the sense for hearing, something which one may grow tired of, but he says it goes in the ear, and then from the ear, it goes in the heart, and it acts like medicine to overcome the attachments one has to the bhava roga or the constantly changing, treacherous material world. And then step by step, just by that process of sitting with sādhus... ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Miroslav Volf confronts Schopenhauer's pessimism and unquenchable thirst with a vision of love that affirms the world.“Unquenchable thirst makes for ceaseless pain. This befits our nature as objectification of the ceaseless and aimless will at the heart of reality. ... For Schopenhauer, the pleasure of satisfaction are the lights of fireflies in the night of life's suffering. These four claims taken together make pain the primordial, universal, and unalterable state of human lives.”In the second installment of his 2025 Gifford Lectures, Miroslav Volf examines the 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's radical rejection of the world. Through Schopenhauer's metaphysics of blind will and insatiable desire, Volf draws out the philosopher's haunting pessimism and hatred for existence itself. But Schopenhauer's rejection of the world—rooted in disappointed love—is not just a historical curiosity; Volf shows how our modern consumerist cravings mirror Schopenhauer's vision of unquenchable thirst and fleeting satisfaction. In response, Volf offers a theological and philosophical critique grounded in three kinds of love—epithumic (appetitive), erotic (appreciative), and agapic (self-giving)—arguing that agape love must be central in our relationship to the world. “Everything is a means, but nothing satisfies,” Volf warns, unless we reorder our loves. This second lecture challenges listeners to reconsider what it means to live in and love a world full of suffering—without abandoning its goodness.Episode Highlights“Unquenchable thirst makes for ceaseless pain. This befits our nature as objectification of the ceaseless and aimless will at the heart of reality.”“Whether we love ice cream or sex or God, we are often merely seeking to slake our thirst.”“If we long for what we have, what we have never ceases to satisfy.”“A better version is available—for whatever reason, it is not good enough. And we discard it. This is micro-rejection of the world.”“Those who love agape refuse to act as if they were the midpoint of their world.”Helpful Links and ResourcesThe World as Will and Representation by Arthur SchopenhauerParadiso by Dante AlighieriVictor Hugo's Les MisérablesA Brief for the Defense by Jack GilbertShow NotesSchopenhauer's pessimism as rooted in disappointed love of the worldGod's declaration in Genesis—“very good”—contrasted with Schopenhauer's “nothing is good”Job's suffering as a theological counterpoint to Schopenhauer's metaphysical despairHuman desire framed as unquenchable thirst: pain, boredom, and fleeting satisfactionSchopenhauer's diagnosis: we swing endlessly between pain and boredomThree kinds of love introduced: epithumic (appetite), erotic (appreciation), agapic (affirmation)Schopenhauer's exclusive emphasis on appetite—no place for appreciation or unconditional loveModern consumer culture mirrors Schopenhauer's account: desiring to desire, never satisfiedFast fashion, disposability, and market-induced obsolescence as symptoms of world-negation“We long for what we have” vs. “we discard the world”Luther's critique: “suck God's blood”—epithumic relation to GodAgape love: affirming the other, even when undeserving or diminishedErotic love: savoring the intrinsic worth of things, not just their utilityThe fleetingness of joy and comparison's corrosion of valueModern desire as invasive, subliminally shaped by market competitionDenigration of what is in favor of what could be—a pathology of dissatisfactionConsumerism as massive “micro-rejection” of the worldVolf's call to reorder our loves toward appreciation and unconditional affirmationTheology and metaphysics reframe suffering not as a reason to curse the world, but to love it betterPreview of next lecture: Nietzsche, joy, and the affirmation of all existenceProduction NotesThis podcast featured Miroslav VolfEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Taylor Craig and Macie BridgeA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/giveSpecial thanks to Dr. Paul Nimmo, Paula Duncan, and the media team at the University of Aberdeen. Our guest is Suzie Shin, a designer, educator, and artist who moved to Chicago after studying at RISD, drawn by the city's community of small design studios and creative collaboration. In this episode, Suzie speaks with host Christian Solorzano about her journey from aspiring illustrator to discovering her voice through collage and color. She shares insights about her analog-to-digital design process, where handmade work becomes the foundation for larger-scale projects, and how she creates parameters that allow for intuitive flow.Suzie discusses her experience as a new typography instructor at DePaul University and how persistence led to her internship at the renowned Chicago studio, Thirst. She opens up about her current collaboration with Rick Valicenti on an Alexander Girard exhibition in Columbus, Indiana, and how Girard's approach to color and joy influences her own pursuit of work. The conversation explores Suzie's creative philosophy—using collage as a thinking tool rather than an end goal—and her current transition away from traditional graphic design toward fine art and textiles. She reflects on finding balance between making and documenting, the challenges of graphic design's increasing association with marketing, and what grounds her outside the studio: reading, cooking, and learning to quilt.

How to Stop Suffering: A Simple Lesson From a Modern Guru

ChrisCast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2025 34:06

My guru sent me an email that I can't stop thinking about. It was simple, almost blunt, but it explained why most of the suffering we experience today is unnecessary. It wasn't a long teaching or a sacred text—just a reminder of how easy peace can be if we understand what's really going on.Buddhism, he wrote, is one of the oldest spiritual paths in the world. It started with the Buddha, a man who saw that life is full of suffering but also that suffering can end. His message was simple: suffering happens when we cling to pain and fight against life. Peace comes when we stop clinging and learn to let go.My guru broke it down even more. He said there are only a handful of things that truly cause suffering. In fact, he said you can fit them into one easy-to-remember list called THE SHIT:Thirst. Hunger. Exposure to the elements. Sickness. Horniness. Injury. Tiredness. And then there's one more: Your Brain. For most of human history, these things were everywhere. People suffered from thirst because they didn't have clean water. Hunger was constant. Exposure to the cold or heat could kill you. Sickness and injury were deadly because there were no doctors or medicine. Life was hard and short. But my guru reminded me that for most people in the modern world, these problems don't have to control us anymore. Clean water is at the turn of a tap. Food is easy to find. Most people have roofs over their heads, clothes to wear, and access to medicine when they're sick. Even horniness, injury, and tiredness are things we can handle. Modern life has removed most of the pain that haunted our ancestors.Thirst? Drink.Hunger? Eat.Exposure? Go inside.Sickness? Take care of your body, see a doctor.Horniness? Take care of it or let it pass.Injury? Be careful.Tiredness? Sleep in your safe bed.If all that is true, why do we still suffer so much? Because of the last one: Your Brain. The brain is ancient. It evolved to keep us alive when the world was full of threats. It constantly looks for danger, imagines problems, and creates fear to keep you alert. That was useful when tigers lurked in the bushes. Today, it's mostly noise. The brain still invents suffering even when you're safe. It whispers lies about what's wrong and what's missing, dragging you away from peace. The Buddha taught that suffering comes from attachment—clinging to thoughts and feelings as if they are permanent truths. My guru said that most of the time, our brains feed us suffering because we don't question it. We believe the fear. We believe the story. We forget that we're already safe, already okay, already living better than almost anyone who came before us.The truth is, for many of us, life is already as close to paradise as humanity has ever known. You're alive, reading this, likely in comfort, with clean water and food nearby. This is already what the Buddha called Nirvana—freedom from suffering. The only reason it doesn't feel like it is because we let our brains drag us back into fear and want.My guru said that Nirvana isn't some faraway place or something only for monks. It's here, now, waiting for you to notice it. It's what you feel when you take care of your body and stop believing the false stories your brain spins. It's not complicated, but it takes seeing things clearly.Sadly, most people don't want to give up their suffering. They cling to it because it feels familiar, because it gives them something to hold. They say they want peace but keep choosing pain. That's their choice. But you don't have to. You can handle THE SHIT—thirst, hunger, exposure, sickness, horniness, injury, tiredness—because our world makes that easy. Then you can start to tame the brain, the last and biggest source of suffering. When you stop letting your brain lie to you, suffering fades. You realize peace was always here. Nirvana is not something you earn—it's something you see. It's been waiting all along.

A crisis-level shortage of clergy in North American Reform and Conservative synagogues has led to a fascinating new phenomenon – an exodus of Israeli-born rabbis moving to the United States and Canada to serve as spiritual leaders. On the Haaretz Podcast, Judy Maltz, Haaretz’s Jewish world editor who has reported on the trend, explains how these Israelis are filling an ever-growing need as fewer and fewer young North American Jews are training to be rabbis in non-Orthodox movements. Meanwhile, the number of Israelis receiving rabbinic ordination has grown. “I think what's luring them abroad primarily is the salaries and the conditions,” Maltz told podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, adding there was another extremely appealing factor: respect. “A woman rabbi who had recently taken a job in New York said to me ‘I no longer have to prove I'm a rabbi here.’ That is a very appealing factor: being admired and accepted for what you are and your profession, and that you don't have to constantly fight for recognition and legitimacy.” By contrast, in Israel, they are still battling for that legitimacy and even face mockery. The Israeli imports are helping to solve the “very huge shortage of rabbis” to serve U.S. congregations in the non-Orthodox Jewish community “because nobody really wants to go to rabbinical school anymore and the whole business of organized synagogue life has become less appealing,” Maltz explained. With liberal Jews affiliated with Jewish organizations (like synagogues) are having fewer and fewer children, she said, it has also been more difficult for Reform and Conservative congregations to sustain their traditionally strong youth movements “which have been the pipeline tor rabbinical school.” The new imports, Maltz noted, are not only breathing new spiritual life into their new congregations “but since October 7, these Israeli rabbis find themselves serving as a kind of bridge between their congregations and Israel – and as an important resource on information about what's happening in Israel where the news changes so quickly. They are finding themselves in this new and rather unexpected role of explaining what's happening.” Subscribe to Haaretz.com for up-to-the-minute news and analysis from Israel and the Middle East in English.
