Known as the "Vampire Rapist" or "Strangler Bill" for his distinctive modus operandi, Wayne Boden would rape, strangle, and bite the breasts of his victims. His rampage would continue in two cities over three years, only caught by superior evidence-gathering and the help of an orthodontist. The book asks the question, "How do we really know our boyfriend or lover when we either don't want to ask the questions not only because we don't want to know the answers for what it will tell us about them, but because of what it tells us about ourselves?"True crime author Alan R. Warren takes you through the details of the case including the dental impressions used in court to convict Boden, a first in Canadian history, as well as Boden's escape from a maximum-security prison. This book is available in Kindle, paperback, and audiobook editions on Amazon.https://amzn.to/4oqaJmVBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Miroslav Volf confronts Schopenhauer's pessimism and unquenchable thirst with a vision of love that affirms the world.“Unquenchable thirst makes for ceaseless pain. This befits our nature as objectification of the ceaseless and aimless will at the heart of reality. ... For Schopenhauer, the pleasure of satisfaction are the lights of fireflies in the night of life's suffering. These four claims taken together make pain the primordial, universal, and unalterable state of human lives.”In the second installment of his 2025 Gifford Lectures, Miroslav Volf examines the 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's radical rejection of the world. Through Schopenhauer's metaphysics of blind will and insatiable desire, Volf draws out the philosopher's haunting pessimism and hatred for existence itself. But Schopenhauer's rejection of the world—rooted in disappointed love—is not just a historical curiosity; Volf shows how our modern consumerist cravings mirror Schopenhauer's vision of unquenchable thirst and fleeting satisfaction. In response, Volf offers a theological and philosophical critique grounded in three kinds of love—epithumic (appetitive), erotic (appreciative), and agapic (self-giving)—arguing that agape love must be central in our relationship to the world. “Everything is a means, but nothing satisfies,” Volf warns, unless we reorder our loves. This second lecture challenges listeners to reconsider what it means to live in and love a world full of suffering—without abandoning its goodness.Episode Highlights“Unquenchable thirst makes for ceaseless pain. This befits our nature as objectification of the ceaseless and aimless will at the heart of reality.”“Whether we love ice cream or sex or God, we are often merely seeking to slake our thirst.”“If we long for what we have, what we have never ceases to satisfy.”“A better version is available—for whatever reason, it is not good enough. And we discard it. Send us a text“Spiritually Thirsty? Come to the Waters” — Isaiah 55:1 | 5-Minute Devotional with Reverend Ben CooperDo you feel spiritually dry, like your soul is stuck in a desert without rain? Are you going through the motions of religion but finding no refreshment? In this deeply moving five-minute devotional, Reverend Ben Cooper brings biblical clarity and spiritual hydration straight from Isaiah 55:1, where God issues a timeless invitation:“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!” — Isaiah 55:1 (NIV)This episode cuts through empty routines and surface-level spirituality to reach the heart of those who are weary, discouraged, or burned out. Reverend Ben speaks to the modern-day believer who's been drawing from dry wells—religious traditions, spiritual expectations, worldly distractions—yet still feels unsatisfied. Through compassionate prayer and Scripture reflection, you're invited to drink from the living water that only Jesus can provide.Life Application & Biblical Insight:Like the Samaritan woman in John 4:7–14, many of us return to dry wells expecting change. But real transformation begins when we come to Christ directly—not through ritual, not through rules, but through relationship.“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst…” — John 4:13–14 (NIV)This five-minute daily prayer is a divine reset. It's a chance to stop, breathe, and rehydrate your soul. If you're feeling spiritually depleted—emotionally drained or disconnected from God's presence—this short time with God could be the oasis you've been longing for.Call to Action:If this ministry blesses your walk with God, please help us reach more souls worldwide by giving just £3/month via Buy Me a Coffee at rbchristianradio.net. Our guest is Suzie Shin, a designer, educator, and artist who moved to Chicago after studying at RISD, drawn by the city's community of small design studios and creative collaboration. In this episode, Suzie speaks with host Christian Solorzano about her journey from aspiring illustrator to discovering her voice through collage and color. She shares insights about her analog-to-digital design process, where handmade work becomes the foundation for larger-scale projects, and how she creates parameters that allow for intuitive flow.Suzie discusses her experience as a new typography instructor at DePaul University and how persistence led to her internship at the renowned Chicago studio, Thirst. She opens up about her current collaboration with Rick Valicenti on an Alexander Girard exhibition in Columbus, Indiana, and how Girard's approach to color and joy influences her own pursuit of work. The conversation explores Suzie's creative philosophy—using collage as a thinking tool rather than an end goal—and her current transition away from traditional graphic design toward fine art and textiles. She reflects on finding balance between making and documenting, the challenges of graphic design's increasing association with marketing, and what grounds her outside the studio: reading, cooking, and learning to quilt.
My guru sent me an email that I can't stop thinking about. It was simple, almost blunt, but it explained why most of the suffering we experience today is unnecessary. It wasn't a long teaching or a sacred text—just a reminder of how easy peace can be if we understand what's really going on.Buddhism, he wrote, is one of the oldest spiritual paths in the world. It started with the Buddha, a man who saw that life is full of suffering but also that suffering can end. His message was simple: suffering happens when we cling to pain and fight against life. Peace comes when we stop clinging and learn to let go.My guru broke it down even more. He said there are only a handful of things that truly cause suffering. In fact, he said you can fit them into one easy-to-remember list called THE SHIT:Thirst. Hunger. Exposure to the elements. Sickness. Horniness. Injury. Tiredness. And then there's one more: Your Brain. For most of human history, these things were everywhere. People suffered from thirst because they didn't have clean water. Hunger was constant. Exposure to the cold or heat could kill you. Sickness and injury were deadly because there were no doctors or medicine. Life was hard and short. But my guru reminded me that for most people in the modern world, these problems don't have to control us anymore. Clean water is at the turn of a tap. Food is easy to find. Most people have roofs over their heads, clothes to wear, and access to medicine when they're sick. Even horniness, injury, and tiredness are things we can handle. Modern life has removed most of the pain that haunted our ancestors.Thirst? Drink.Hunger? Eat.Exposure? Go inside.Sickness? Take care of your body, see a doctor.Horniness? Take care of it or let it pass.Injury? Be careful.Tiredness? Sleep in your safe bed.If all that is true, why do we still suffer so much? Because of the last one: Your Brain. The brain is ancient. It evolved to keep us alive when the world was full of threats. It constantly looks for danger, imagines problems, and creates fear to keep you alert. That was useful when tigers lurked in the bushes. Today, it's mostly noise. The brain still invents suffering even when you're safe. It whispers lies about what's wrong and what's missing, dragging you away from peace. The Buddha taught that suffering comes from attachment—clinging to thoughts and feelings as if they are permanent truths. My guru said that most of the time, our brains feed us suffering because we don't question it. We believe the fear. We believe the story. We forget that we're already safe, already okay, already living better than almost anyone who came before us.The truth is, for many of us, life is already as close to paradise as humanity has ever known. You're alive, reading this, likely in comfort, with clean water and food nearby. This is already what the Buddha called Nirvana—freedom from suffering. The only reason it doesn't feel like it is because we let our brains drag us back into fear and want.My guru said that Nirvana isn't some faraway place or something only for monks. It's here, now, waiting for you to notice it. It's what you feel when you take care of your body and stop believing the false stories your brain spins. It's not complicated, but it takes seeing things clearly.Sadly, most people don't want to give up their suffering. They cling to it because it feels familiar, because it gives them something to hold. They say they want peace but keep choosing pain. That's their choice. But you don't have to. You can handle THE SHIT—thirst, hunger, exposure, sickness, horniness, injury, tiredness—because our world makes that easy. Then you can start to tame the brain, the last and biggest source of suffering. When you stop letting your brain lie to you, suffering fades. You realize peace was always here. Nirvana is not something you earn—it's something you see. It's been waiting all along.

A crisis-level shortage of clergy in North American Reform and Conservative synagogues has led to a fascinating new phenomenon – an exodus of Israeli-born rabbis moving to the United States and Canada to serve as spiritual leaders. On the Haaretz Podcast, Judy Maltz, Haaretz’s Jewish world editor who has reported on the trend, explains how these Israelis are filling an ever-growing need as fewer and fewer young North American Jews are training to be rabbis in non-Orthodox movements. Meanwhile, the number of Israelis receiving rabbinic ordination has grown. “I think what's luring them abroad primarily is the salaries and the conditions,” Maltz told podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, adding there was another extremely appealing factor: respect. “A woman rabbi who had recently taken a job in New York said to me ‘I no longer have to prove I'm a rabbi here.’ That is a very appealing factor: being admired and accepted for what you are and your profession, and that you don't have to constantly fight for recognition and legitimacy.” By contrast, in Israel, they are still battling for that legitimacy and even face mockery. The Israeli imports are helping to solve the “very huge shortage of rabbis” to serve U.S. congregations in the non-Orthodox Jewish community “because nobody really wants to go to rabbinical school anymore and the whole business of organized synagogue life has become less appealing,” Maltz explained. With liberal Jews affiliated with Jewish organizations (like synagogues) are having fewer and fewer children, she said, it has also been more difficult for Reform and Conservative congregations to sustain their traditionally strong youth movements “which have been the pipeline tor rabbinical school.” The new imports, Maltz noted, are not only breathing new spiritual life into their new congregations “but since October 7, these Israeli rabbis find themselves serving as a kind of bridge between their congregations and Israel – and as an important resource on information about what's happening in Israel where the news changes so quickly. They are finding themselves in this new and rather unexpected role of explaining what's happening.” Subscribe to Haaretz.com for up-to-the-minute news and analysis from Israel and the Middle East in English. Thirst, Worship, & The Well | John 4:1-42 | Nathan Loxley by 24 church
Previous episodes in our AI series have focused on the evolving features of artificial intelligence itself: its potential to democratize education and to improve city planning and weather forecasting. In this final installment, we examine its costs: the accelerating resource demands of AI and other data-intensive technologies. Maya Chari, this year's Ten Across + APM Research Lab data journalism fellow, recently investigated the true water and energy costs associated with data center facilities in the Phoenix metro area— now on track to become the second largest market in the U.S. Though granular industrial data can be difficult to come by, Maya located a report submitted by Microsoft to City of Goodyear officials, stating that one of their proposed data centers would use as much potable water each year as 670 homes. Amplified across the 140 other data centers currently dotting the state of Arizona alone, the scale of such consumption becomes clearer. As data centers rapidly multiply in response to market demand around the world—often preferring arid places like the water-stressed U.S. Southwest—critical questions are pressed about whether and how such development can be sustained. In back-to-back conversations in this episode, we'll hear from experts involved in managing and reducing the impact of the physical infrastructure behind our digitized lives. Bobby Olsen, chief planning, strategy, and sustainability executive at the Arizona electric and water utility Salt River Project, describes planning to meet staggering levels of projected energy demand. And Dr. Kerri Hickenbottom, principal investigator at University of Arizona's Hickenbottom Environmental Research Lab, discusses working in concert with the public and private sectors to improve water reuse strategies and overall efficiency of data center operations. On our last episode, I welcomed two of our Sullivan Undergraduate Saints Fellows to talk about the pilgrimage through France that our cohort completed at the start of summer. The final destination on that pilgrimage was Lourdes. As follow up to that episode, I want to share with all of you a relatively short reflection on thirst. In particular, I want to talk about a pilgrim's thirst. But in the end, I really want to talk about the waters of Lourdes. This Sunday is Mountain Movers Kids Takeover—a high-energy, whole-family service led by our amazing kids! Our message, “Thirst,” will unpack how only Jesus can satisfy the deep spiritual thirst we all feel with His living water.
Psalm 63, written while David was in the wilderness of Judah, fleeing from Absalom's murderous coup, reveals David's deep longing for intimacy with God. Exiled from tabernacle worship, he knew that intimacy was still possible, and he offers some counsel for all who, like him, seek, thirst, and faint for intimacy with God. We consider this Psalm under four broad headings: 1. Desire God Genuinely (v. 1) 2. Seek God Corporately (vv. 2–4) 3. Be Satisfied with God Privately (vv. 5–8) 4. Celebrate God Consistently (vv. 9–11)

John 19:28. Some of the most important teachings that Jesus did were while He was dying on the cross. In this study, Evangelist Jacob Holman examines two words Jesus spoke on the cross - "I thirst" - and look deeper into their true meaning.
Magnequench: CFIUS and China's Thirst for U.S. Defense TechnologyThe Impermanence of Permanent Magnets: A Case Study on Industry, Chinese Production, and Supply ConstraintsGM to sell Magnaquench| 后期制作 |刘大哭| 声音设计 |刘三菜| 收听方式 |你可以通过小宇宙、苹果播客、Spotify、喜马拉雅、网易云音乐、QQ音乐、荔枝、豆瓣等平台收听节目。| 认识我们 |微信公众号:第一财经YiMagazine联系我们:thatisbiz@yicai.com

Pastor Jesus Arriaga uses the Mandalorian phrase “this is the way” to emphasize that David's declaration in Psalm 63:3—“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you”—points us to making God's love the guiding principle of our lives.

Dave and Chris opine on food criticism and what the ideal food critic would be like. They are then joined by Besha Rodell, the author of 'Hunger Like a Thirst' and a former anonymous food critic. She has an amazing résumé and gives insights into what it is really like to be a food reviewer. Besha, Dave, and Chris discuss food criticism as it has been and its platonic ideal: from honest reviews to what reviewers should be looking for when critiquing a restaurant.
