It's bonus episode time! I got to chat with Sifu Alex Richter (aka The Kung Fu Genius) about Wing Tsun, Bruce Lee, Shaw Brothers, the Venoms and much more. Alex is a wealth of knowledge, especially on Wing Tsun and Bruce Lee, having taught Wing Tsun for decades now. Not only is he knowledgeable, he knows how to tell one hell of a story! If you're wondering why I'm typing "Wing Tsun" and not "Wing Chun," listen to the episode! You can check out Alex's Wing Chun school at www.citywt.com You can watch episodes of his podcast at The Kung Fu Genius (audio version available on all good podcast platforms) Follow him on all social media: The Kung Fu Genius
Alex has been studying martial arts since the age of eight. By the age of fifteen, he already earned a black belt in Taekwondo and was completely obsessed with Bruce Lee. During his late teen years, he began training in wing chun, grappling, and other kung fu systems. By age twenty, Alex started training in Sifu Leung Ting's brand of wing chun know as Wing Tsun (WT). This art would become his life's passion. His dedication to this art has made him one of the most high-profile Wing Tsun instructors in North America. His specialty is seamlessly blending the Hong Kong-style Wing Tsun with modern Western teaching systems and progressions. Sifu Alex's attention to detail, coupled with his intense knowledge of Chinese culture has put him into his own category. His hard work and development has not gone unnoticed. His City Wing Tsun Athletic Association has the most members of any WT association in North America. Wing Tsun devotees from all over the world fly to the NYC HQ to learn from him, even if for only one class. In recent years Sifu Alex has graced the cover of Wing Chun Illustrated and been featured in major martial art publications internationally. Outside of the martial arts press he has been featured in Harper's Bazaar, USA Today, The Discovery Channel, and PBS. Recently Vice Magazine did an entire feature on Sifu Alex's life and school in NYC. It’s time to pick up your slice of humble pie and buckle up to listen to Lee Kemp, multi-award winning national wrestling legend, talk with me about the challenges and thrills he’s faced during his decade-spanning career. An overarching theme of our conversation today is on the subject of humility, especially why this is such an important trait to have as an athlete. We touch on Lee’s incredible past and what some other vital traits athletes should have in order to succeed. A little known fact about Lee Kemp is that he actually didn’t like wrestling when he first joined his high school wrestling team. Struggling with disappointment over not making the basketball team, Lee joined the wrestling team as a freshman, two years after most kids start learning the sport. But when he started winning matches almost immediately, his feelings towards wrestling changed from indifference to love. In this episode, Lee and I talk about disappointment and why it will probably still live with you even decades after the event. It’s okay to still feel that disappointment, but it’s not okay to have it dictate your life. Lee has used his Olympic disappointment to help him coach athletes and make a difference in their lives. We also look at the baggage we all carry around. We all usually attribute baggage to negative life experiences, but that’s not always the baggage we have. Sometimes, our baggage is our positive life experiences that we’re not living anymore. But a big theme in this episode is humility. Learning to be humble is one of the most important things you can do in life. Humility will positively impact your life at all points: your professional career, in sports, and your personal interactions. How do you stay humble? Have you suffered a huge disappointment? Do you make a point to celebrate other people’s success? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: How to deal with massive disappointment and loss, even decades after it happened Why you can often get more satisfaction watching someone else’s success How baggage can be more than just negative past experiences Why it’s so important to stay humble for both your career and personal life Why you need to have a sense of arrogance in sports, especially wrestling How to handle abrupt changes in your life Quotes: “Just keep it moving forward instead of looking back. Because, for some people, that’s all they have [an accomplishment] from 20-30 years ago.” (18:14) “If you don’t pay your rent today, you’re out. Doesn’t matter what you did yesterday, the rent’s due every day. And if you’re not prepared to go to work tomorrow, you’re not gonna have the success. And life is that way. You’ve gotta put that effort into everyday living. You have to put it into relationships.” (20:53) “Anyone can be beaten, even you.” (30:06) “Take the focus off of yourself and try to help other people.” (42:04) Links Find Lee Kemp Online Follow Lee Kemp on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Watch Wrestled Away: The Lee Kemp Story If you liked this episode, you should probably check out these past episodes: 018: How To Turn Tragedy Into Fuel For Living Your Best Life w/ Steve Datte 005: Why You NEED To Learn How To Set & Enforce Strict Boundaries w/ Kyree Oliver 002: What It Looks Like To Keep Fighting When Times Get Tough w/ Sifu Alex Richter Come hang out with an amazing group of badass women in a private, supportive community, Bad-Ass Women Owning Sexy Check out the full show notes for this episode! Coming to terms with your identity can be a struggle in and of itself, but when you add the perceived and real reactions of the people around you, it can seem nearly impossible. Brandon Meneses is a bright, caring, and spiritual young man who is full of life, energy, and focuses on being intentional and manifesting the life he wants to live. But he wasn’t always this way. Brandon struggled with his identity since he was in kindergarten. Realizing that he liked boys confused him and he was unsure how to approach his new sexuality. This led him down a path of depression because he wasn’t living his fullest truth but couldn’t see how to embrace his identity. His depression took a suicidal turn and in his darkest moment contemplated taking his own life while holding a knife to his wrists. This was a turning point for him and he slowly started coming out to his family and friends. Today, Brandon lives an open, happy, and healthy life as a real estate agent in South Florida. On this episode, we’re talking about why it’s important to live your fullest truth and how you can embrace coming out. Our goal is to help support and shower you with love. To show you that it’s okay to own your sexuality. We’re also exploring how we, as allies, friends, and family, can support someone coming out. Brandon also talks about when, why, and how you can start to come out to your loved ones and what to do if someone isn’t accepting of your sexuality. Have you ever struggled with your sexuality or identity? Do you know how to help someone through difficult times? How do you talk to your children about sexual identity? Leave me a comment on the episode page! In This Episode: What happens when you come out What it’s like to realize the difference between liking hanging out with the guys and liking the boys How being in the closet can affect your mental health and lead to depression How you can help people through a coming out or transition Why it’s important to have open, encouraging conversations with your children How to create safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community and those coming out How representation can help young people learning about their identities can ease the process of coming out Quotes: “Strength and really knowing that you’re enough is so powerful.” (16:12) “I hope that when people hear this podcast they go, “Wow, someone else understands me!” And I think that’s the first step: for people to know that they’re not alone.” (21:13) “Looking back at it, I would tell my mom to just let that little kid be the Queen that he thinks he is.” (28:38) “Once I came out, I could put all of my energy into being the best me I could be.” (39:37) Links Follow Brandon Meneses on Facebook | Instagram Find The J Alexander Group Online | Facebook If you liked this episode, you should probably check out these past episodes: 012: How to Confront Sexual Trauma & The Road to Recovery with Alison Forsyth 010: Finding Your True Light in Darkness with Erica Marie Wigley 002: What it Looks Like to Keep Fighting When Times Get Tough with Sifu Alex Richter Come hang out with an amazing group of badass women in a private, supportive community, Bad-Ass Women Owning Sexy Check out the full show notes for this episode! Martial arts is more than just a drop-in activity where you can get fit. Wing Tsun Kung Fu is a dedicated practice that can change your life, just as it did for Sifu Alex Richter, owner of City Wing Tsun in New York City. In fact, this style of kung fu didn’t just change Alex’s life, it saved it. Since he was 8 years old, martial arts has called to Sifu Alex Richter. Once he left high school, Alex spent 3 years training 30 hours a week at Langenzell Castle in Germany, the former headquarters for the European WingTsun Organization (EWTO). He continues his training by traveling to Hong Kong to study with a Wing Tsun master at least twice a year. I’ve actually known Alex since we were both in school and sitting down to record this episode was a real pleasure. We talked about pursuing your passion, marketing strategies, and then we get intimate and talk about the hard times Alex has been through. Have you ever pursued your passion rather than a traditional career route (school, college, full-time job)? If so, what adventures has that led you on? Have you ever had depression? In This Episode: Who Sifu Alex Richter’s role model is and how he first became interested in martial arts Why Alex decided to ignore the naysayers and pursue kung fu rather than something to fall back on How Alex knew what he was destined to do with his life and when he fell in love with it Why taking a one hour class or tutorial doesn’t mean you’ve learned something, whether that’s martial arts or Instagram marketing What Alex’s turning point was How Alex dealt with the disappointment of teaching outside his preferred demographic What it’s like to lose a close friend and student, and how Alex dealt with feeling responsible for his death How Alex fell deep into depression and what made him finally seek help What skills Alex used to help him overcome his depression Quotes: “Working for somebody else does not give you any psychological security.” 12.35 “You can fail at the thing you don’t want to do, or you can fail at the thing you do want to do.” 13.11 “It’s not up to me to tell someone what the journey’s going to give them at the end. I just provide the vehicle” 22.21 “There are some people who get hit, they get stronger. And there are some people who get hit and they cower” 36.55 “If you go through something at your worst, everything else doesn’t seem that bad anymore.” 1.02.58 Links Check out the full show notes for this episode! Sifu Alex Richter is a martial arts fanatic who authored the critically-acclaimed 'The Little Idea' and also co-hosts the Dudes of Kung Fu podcast. In just a few short years he went from teaching at rented dance studios to developing the biggest Wing Tsun center in NYC. His intense expertise first gained worldwide exposure through his popular Wing Chun series on HowCast.com. Sifu Alex has been featured on VICE, The Discovery Channel, NBC, PBS, Black Belt Magazine, Kung Fu/Taichi Magazine, Wing Chun Illustrated, and Harper's Bazaar. I really enjoyed hearing his story on how he discovered Wing Chun, how he build one of the most successful martial arts schools in New York and how we can make Wing Chun even more relevant in the 21st century.
