New research has revealed over 300 species of Australian marine species are declining at a rate that threatens them with extinction - including the Weedy Seadragon. The research, which draws on Australia-wide data collected by the Reef Life Survey over the past two decades, looked at populations of over 1,000 species of seaweeds, fish, corals and other invertebrates. He researched the 'virtuous cycle': how and why people get engaged with ocean conservation and how it really makes a difference. John went on a roadtrip from Port Stephens to Perth to find out what factors make people care. One of the outcomes of his work was that marine sanctuaries make it much easier for people to care. And if they do, marine biodiversity increases measurably. So policy makers aren't off the hook. Good policy sets the scene to encourage people to act on ocean conservation.
