I'll say right upfront that this is a different kind of episode for the podcast, but stick with me, because today, we're diving into digital decluttering. I know firsthand the toll digital clutter can take. Raising neurodivergent kids means managing a ton of information — from school communications and teacher emails to scheduling appointments, handling assessments, and organizing documentation. It's a lot to keep track of, and it can really weigh us down. If you can relate, this episode is for you. I invited tech and productivity coach Amanda Jefferson, affectionately known as the Tech Whisperer, to help us tackle digital clutter. Amanda guides busy people through streamlining their digital lives and speaks about silencing society's noisy “shoulds.” She's a TEDx speaker, one of the world's first KonMari consultants, and co-host of the Good Enough-ish podcast. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Real Simple, Harper's Bazaar, and Good Day Philadelphia. In our conversation, we discussed the importance of digital decluttering, particularly for neurodivergent families. Amanda shared strategies for securely storing essential documents, organizing email to reduce stress, managing passwords, and using what she calls “free assistants” on our devices to make daily routines run more smoothly. Even if you consider yourself tech-savvy, I think you'll learn something new in this episode. Enjoy, and hopefully, you'll walk away with some actionable steps! The Fashion Fête, a three-day event at the Ritz Carlton in New York, began on 4th November, 1914, offering New Yorkers their first glimpse of what we would now understand as a fashion show. With Parisian ateliers shut down due to the First World War, the U.S. editor of Vogue, Edna Woolman Chase, had proposed the event as a way to showcase the work of American designers: a novel concept in an industry that traditionally looked to France for inspiration. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Conde Nast (the man) was originally unsure about the precedent Conde Nast (the brand) would be establishing; reveal how Woolman Chase encouraged high society ladies to participate; and reveal how the War also led to other fashion breakthroughs including New York Fashion Week and the Met Gala… Further Reading: • ‘The fascinating history of the catwalk show' (Harpers Bazaar, 2022): https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/a35783366/history-catwalk-show/ • ‘As Seen in Vogue: A Century of American Fashion in Advertising, By Daniel Delis Hill' (Texas Tech University Press, 2004): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/As_Seen_in_Vogue/MvilOZhaRkAC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=fashion+fete+1914&pg=PA29&printsec=frontcover • ‘Paris Fashion in 1917 - AI Enhanced Film during WW1' (Glamour Daze, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pjw12GSNBM Love the show? One of our favorite power couples is back! The AP first dubbed them the Transgender Power Couple. Journalist Erin Reed was formerly the digital director of The American Independent. She currently writes for the Los Angeles Blade and Harpers Bazaar.. She is a researcher who tracks anti-LGBTQ+ legislation around the world and helps people become better advocates for their queer family, friends, colleagues, and community. Reed also is a social media consultant and public speaker. Her fiance is Zooey Zephyr, member of the Montana House of Representatives from the 100th district. Zephyr was a vocal opponent of multiple anti-LGBT bills introduced during the 2023 legislative session. During a floor debate on April 18, 2023, Zephyr admonished those who supported Senate Bill 99, which prohibits gender-affirming medical and surgical care for minors. She first commented, "If you are forcing a trans child to go through puberty when they are trans, that is tantamount to torture, and this body should be ashamed." When this remark triggered an objection from Republican majority leader Sue Vinton, Zephyr replied, "The only thing I will say is if you vote 'yes' on this bill and 'yes' on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands." This led to a massive attempt by the state Republicans to censure her and silence her. Months ago we enjoyed a rigorous conversation with these two about the state of transgender rights, and today we get their insights on that subject from the purview of the DNC, plus discussion on current issues.

Raised in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia, she oozes style and creativity. With an early interest in fashion, design and art, she left school to work for top advertising agency Mojo. Soon after marrying and starting a much desired family, she was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's in her twenties and dedicated her future to raising two equally artistic daughters and advocating her health experiences for people living with her condition, positively impacting her community far and wide. Her reach has been instrumental as a participant in a pioneering Parkinson's drug trial under the leadership of principal neurologist Dr Victor Fung. This groundbreaking and newly approved device recently named VYALEV was funded through pharmaceutical company ABBVIE, also involved in other major groundbreaking Parkinson's genetic scientific research trials through Neura Australia with significant funding through the Michael J Fox organisation.' It has over the past three years been the answer to her regaining her mobility and giving her life back. With featured interviews on major television news channels she has now, along with a handful of selected inclusivity models, walked the esteemed Australian Fashion week for multi-disciplinary designer Jordan Gogos in his latest collection and further interviewing for and gracing both Vogue and Harpers Bazaar editorials. Ever keen to give back, her volunteering efforts have been awe inspiring including three years at the Sydney Writers' Festival, perfectly suited to this bookwork with her instagram page Books to Beaches spanning a plethora of publications, in particular shining a deserved light on home grown Australian authors. There are not enough adjectives to adequately praise and present this super woman but to say she is....a woman, a mother, an artist, a friend, an inspiration and a survivor.

The AP dubbed them the Transgender Power Couple. Today we talk to them both about the wave of oppression and intolerance against trans kids and adults, and their mission to defeat it. With co-host Brody Levesque

Plan on watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation this holiday season? Listen to the film's director Jeremiah Chechik talk about the impact that movie has had on him and on our holiday entertainment traditions. He'll talk about the making of the film and why the Griswold Family have become a staple in holiday viewing. This episode was originally released on December 2, 2019. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/323_-_Encore_-_Christmas_Vacation_Movie.mp3 Are there any movies you just have to watch every year during the holiday season? Maybe you like to watch Frank Capra's classic called It's a Wonderful Life that featured Jimmy Stewart. Or, perhaps your favorite move is one of the Home Alone films, written of course by John Hughes. Or, just maybe your holiday season wouldn't be complete without inviting Clark Griswold and family into your home. It's been 30 years since John Hughes wrote the script for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which itself was the third sequel in a series of National Lampoon Vacation films, starring Chevy Chase. The film was based on a short story that John Hughes wrote for National Lampoon in December 1980. That story was called, “Christmas '59.” The movie was no small budget affair. And it featured an ensemble cast of already established actors, and a few who would become A-list Hollywood stars. In addition to Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo played Clark's wife Ellen. Juliette Lewis played their sarcastic teenage daughter. Johnny Galecki played their son, Russ. Randy Quaid delivered an unforgettable performance as Cousin Eddie, and he was joined by an all-star ensemble cast that included Miriam Flynn, who played his wife, and John Randolph, Diane Ladd, E.G. Marshall, Doris Roberts, who played the parents of Clark and Ellen. Other notable actors who made their mark on the film were William Hickey, Mae Questel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brian Doyle-Murray. Christmas Vacation debuted at number-2 at the box office, grossing nearly $12 million that opening weekend. It would top the box office charts three weeks later, eventually grossing over $71 million in the United States. And that was before it hit the home video market and landed its place on our list of holiday season traditions. For Jeremiah Chechik, it was his first chance to direct a full-length feature film, and a comedy. Links National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, IMDB Jeremiah Chechik An Oral History of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Rolling Stone Christmas Vacation Movie Facts, Good Housekeeping About this Episode's Guest Jeremiah Chechik Jeremiah Chechik was born in Montreal, Canada in the fifties and grew up surrounded by books, home made radios and every issue of Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. He got himself a scholarship to McGill University in physics but at the last moment shifted his major to the arts. He was active in the anti-war movement and filmed documentaries on the Black Panthers. He directed plays, studied with John Grierson, the father of the documentary film and later became his assistant. After graduating, he moved to Toronto, worked as a master printmaker for the rare books library at University of Toronto, experimented with coupling the photographic processes to stone lithography and helped start a gallery (A-Space). He received Canada Council Grants, had many solo shows and became one of the first artists to work in laser holography. His success as a fine artist brought him to the attention of advertising agencies and fashion magazines and before long he moved to Milan and began a career as a fashion photographer for Italian Vogue. Jeremiah photographed editorial for Vogue and Harpers Bazaar as well as fashion and beauty campaigns worldwide eventually bringing him back to Canada to begin his evolution into film as he continued to work in photography but without exhibiting. Soon he moved to New York and began a meteoric ris...

No matter how you slice it, wedding photography is a fancy business. On this week's podcast, we take that fancy up a notch in a conversation about luxury wedding photography with James Christianson and Otto Schulze. These former competitors took a giant leap to reinvent themselves as the collaborative partnership James x Schulze, while also adapting their sales strategy to a marketplace where the driving force is want rather than means. Listen in as they describe how they balanced economic risk with the creative freedom to chase small moments and beautiful light. You'll also gain insight into how a luxury client's buying psychology differs from the norm, and the essential importance of taking a client-first approach to projects. “Confidence is the currency of the successful,” explains Christianson about the necessary shift in mindset. “If you can bring confidence in who you are and what your skills are—whether that's with a camera, or skills with people, or both—that will take you a long way in being able to move through any room.” Guests: James Christianson and Otto Schulze Top shot © James x Schulze Episode Timeline 2:55: The logistics of and locations for the luxury wedding photography market. 6:38: Balancing the economics of a collaborative business with the creative freedom and flow of chasing small moments and beautiful light. 10:42: Shaking the middle-class sales mentality and adapting to the buying psychology of luxury clients. 14:45: Put your client first by asking open-ended questions and taking a genuine interest in connecting to best identify their wants. 17:56: The logistics of working with wedding planners in the high-end photography market. 21:40: Destination weddings in a post-COVID world, and the luxury client as a recession proof market for wedding photography. 26:10: James X Shulze's go-to camera gear—from the medium format FUJIFILM GFX to the Leica Q—yet always being mindful of the special atmosphere of the venue. 31:27: Episode break 32:32: Introducing James X Schulze's education brand Sage. Tap into the mindset and confidence needed to cultivate luxury wedding photography clients. 37:14: Distinguishing between premium and luxury wedding clients, and the relative budgets for each 40:10: Develop the story the client wants to tell with their wedding, rather than approaching the wedding as just a photo shoot. 45:14: James and Otto's approach to education involves more than great photographs. Equally important is being a better business owner, and consistency in putting in the work. Guest Bios: James Christianson started his career as an educator and entrepreneur. He has more than 20 years of photography experience under his belt combined with a business and education background that brings a distinctively clear voice to his work. This week I spoke to writer Nada Alic. She's the author of Bad Thoughts and working on a forthcoming novel. We recorded in the height of a heatwave here in LA and it all felt like a fever dream. I came over in the morning, left in the late afternoon. We hung out for an hour or two then recorded for nearly three more. I found listening to her comforting, so I'm breaking it into two parts. As you'll hear, she's incredibly intelligent and clearly creative, yet so humble and funny. She's one of those rare people who are as cool as they seem online, yet also so warm, inviting, and genuinely kind. In this second part, we take questions from some mutual friends, and she talks about her somewhat secret 3:00 ritual, her thoughts on comparisons to other artists, romantic relationships, meeting her husband, friendship, novel research wormholes, and more. In part one last week, we covered everything from our first communions and lingering Catholic guilt to shadow integration, how she ended up in LA, disembodiment, body image, and cancel culture.
