STEVE HATCHER returns to tell us all about NIGEL KNEALE's work in the 1960s. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 17th 2024. Following our recent conversation about NIGEL KNEALE'S BEASTS anthology from the 1970s, STEVE HATCHER and I thought we might continue discussing the career of NIGEL KNEALE, as STEVE has been systematically working his way through such television programmes as still exist from this great writer's works, although he has been particularly focussing on the ones that mostly involve themes of science fiction, fantasy, magic, and folk horror – basically the kind of subjects that are most of interest to him, which seems a perfectly reasonable way of choosing what you want to watch to this old viewer. Anyway, this week we're going to focus mostly on NIGEL'S work from the 1960s, the period following the fifties successes of the first three QUATERMASS serials, the significant contribution to TV history that was his adaptation of George Orwell's NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR, and fascinating lost gems like THE CREATURE, but before the seventies which would bring the classic that is THE STONE TAPE, BEASTS, of course, and, later the fourth of the QUATERMASS stories, which starred SIR JOHN MILLS in the title role. The nineteen-sixties would bring a whole lot of fascinating works including lost classics like the nuclear nightmares of THE ROAD, the Cold War terrors of THE CRUNCH, a different version of NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR, and the prescient broadcasting allegories of THE YEAR OF THE SEX OLYMPICS. We also take some time to discuss NIGEL'S film writing which involves several famous films that it might come as some surprise to you that he was involved in, as well as perhaps some less unexpected dabbles with science-fiction and fantasy with THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and THE WITCHES, as well as the inevitable QUATERMASS AND THE PIT remake. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

"Natural Magick" Formed in the mid '90s in London, Kula Shaker emerged as one of the most dynamic and engaging musical acts around. Mixing psychedelia with traditional Indian music and pop, Kula Shaker tore it up right out of the gate, with their debut album K hitting #1 and making them immediate superstars. Over the course of their career they played Glastonbury, T in the Park, the V Festival, and they supported Oasis at their legendary Knebworth shows. Singer Crispian Mills is the grandson of the Academy Award Winning actor Sir John Mills and the son of director Roy Boulting and actress Hayley Mills, who you might remember from the 1961 film The Parent Trap. Mills got into ancient Sanskrit texts as a young man and carried their wisdom into his adulthood. He also got into psych music as well as The Doors. He's played with X-Ray Spex and appeared on the Prodigy's The Fat Of The Land album and when Kula Shaker were on hiatus, he played in a band called The Jeevas. Also, he's a writer and director; he wrote and helmed the Simon Pegg film A Fantastic Fear Of Everything and has other projects in the works. With Kula Shaker he's put out six marvelous albums, including K, Pilgrim's Progress, 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Hugs and their brand new one, Natural Magick. A riveting return to form, Natural Magick finds the original Kula Shaker lineup reunited and the results are stunning--this album is an energetic blast of psych pop redolent with rich hooks, textured instrumentation and melodies galore. It's fabulous work. www.news.kulashaker.co.uk www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @embersditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
This edition I re-visit the world of Sherlock Holmes and review Peter Cushing's last outing as the great consulting detective, whilst giving a little background to the great man himself. The Masks of Death television movie was made in 1984 which pairs the great Cushing with Sir John Mills as Doctor Watson. The year is 1913 and the dark clouds of war are looming on the horizon. Iconic actress Hayley Mills shares personal memories from her storied childhood, growing up in a famous acting family and becoming a Disney child star, trying to grow up in a world that wanted her to stay forever young. The daughter of acclaimed British actor Sir John Mills was still a preteen when she began her acting career and was quickly thrust into the spotlight. Under the wing of Walt Disney himself, Hayley Mills was transformed into one of the biggest child starlets of the 1960s through her iconic roles in Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, and many more. She became one of only twelve actors in history to be bestowed with the Academy Juvenile Award, presented at the Oscars by its first recipient, Shirley Temple, and went on to win a number of awards including a Golden Globe, multiple BAFTAs, and a Disney Legacy Award. Now, in her charming and forthright memoir, she provides a unique window into when Hollywood was still 'Tinseltown' and the great Walt Disney was at his zenith, ruling over what was (at least in his own head) still a family business. This behind-the-scenes look at the drama of having a sky-rocketing career as a young teen in an esteemed acting family will offer both her childhood impressions of the wild and glamorous world she was swept into, and the wisdom and broader knowledge that time has given her. Hayley will delve intimately into her relationship with Walt Disney, as well as the emotional challenges of being bound to a wholesome, youthful public image as she grew into her later teen years, and how that impacted her and her choices--including marrying a producer over 30 years her senior when she was 20! With her regrets, her joys, her difficulties, and her triumphs, this is a compelling read for any fan of classic Disney films and an inside look at a piece of real Hollywood history.

We made it! The final episode of the first series of 'An A to Z of UK TV Drama' is in the can. Rather than choosing the rather obvious Z Cars we thought instead that with this instalment that we'd take a much overdue trip into the world of ITC with the French Riviera-set crime caper The Zoo Gang. First broadcast in 1974 this series, based on the book by Paul Gallico (The Poseidon Adventure), was filmed in Nice and at Pinewood and starred Sir John Mills, Lilli Palmer, Brian Keith and Barry Morse who played four former resistance agents reunited 28 years after the war. Termed The Zoo Gang because of their codenames during the war: The Elephant, The Leopard, The Fox and The Tiger. A raft of familiar guest stars include Roger Delgado (in his last starring role post-Doctor Who), Jacqueline Pearce, Peter Cushing, and Philip Madoc. Both Andy and Martin find much to enjoy here and not just because they get the opportunity to try out their French or, rather, their French accents! Highlights include the title theme by Paul and Linda McCartney, the performances of the main cast, and the fun heist & hustle plots. Some of the acting isn't that great (coo-ee Ingrid Pitt!) and some of the storylines a bit convoluted but this limited-run 6 episode series still feels like a fun and upbeat way to end our series. This episode was brought to you by the words: malheureusement, maintenant, and perdue. As for 'Another A to Z of UK TV Drama' you'll just have to wait and see.

.We are experiencing 25 degrees each day which we are not geared up to....there are the standard thunderstorms and flash flooding in various parts of the country but mostly blazing sunshine....personally 15 to 20 degrees suits me....but it has worked well for various big events like the tall Ships which have been in Liverpool over the weekend and the Wirral Bikeathon with cyclists hurtling round Birkenhead Park and massive family events with brass bands and those wonderful young ladies marching around and spinning their sticks and throwing them in the air....so for once the weather has been kind. 2.I had to laugh (mainly in despair) when I heard that Stanstead Airport had been brought to a standstill because the unit which refills the planes with fuel had been struck by lightning and was out of action...thus all flights had to be cancelled...then we have the outcry...angry passengers who had been left stranded...and were going to miss their holiday...I'm not quite sure what the airport was supposed to do....perhaps have a word with the lightning and tell it not to do it again....or let them all get on the plane and see if they make it off the ground?...IT'S FOR YOUR SAFETY YOU PLONKERS !!!!....the plane can't fly without fuel...get it? 3.However the nice weather also attracts the morons to the beach where they all gather together in close proximity and eventually go home leaving their trash behind them...ranging from plastic water bottles to baby's nappies....what never ceases to puzzle me is why they all gather in a cluster....we have a 5 mile beach here but the neanderthalls all roll up and set up next to each other....crammed into about 50 yards....with miles of empty beach either side....and the media have been going on about the litter ...coming out with wonderful statements suggesting on the spot fines.......it won't make any difference....you can't legislate for idiots...because they can't see what they are doing wrong....they have yet to evolve. 4.I watched an audience with Cliff Richard from 1999....I must say I enjoyed it...he sings well he moves well ....he looks good and is squeaky clean...so I don't know why I'm not a fan....I did like his early stuff with The Shadows...and his later stuff with those John Farrah productions....but there's something that doesn't quite click with me.....it was nice to see Sir John Mills in the audience...I had the pleasure of meeting him when I worked on Radio Merseyside....he was a delightful man...and I told him how much I enjoyed "Ice Cold In Alex" when he downs that pint of bitter at the end....he put his hand on my arm and said "Lager...it was lager...and the take you saw was about the 15th and I was p****d"....great bloke. 5.The song this week is was the first one I wrote for wrestler Adrian Street back in 1980 and led to a very interesting musical journey....he used this to enter the wrestling ring and we ended up making two albums with me going to the States and appearing on TV....this song and some of the others got MTV coverage and were featured in a film called Grunt-The Wrestling Movie...and all from a chance meeting in a recording studio in Chester.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is Sir John Mills. He was only six when he decided he wanted to be an actor. And now after seventy years in show business he is still touring the world with his one man show. It was the war which made him a star and the films he made then eventually led to Hollywood. There he made friends with Laurence Olivier, Rex Harrison and Noel Coward, to whom he says he owes a great debt.He won an Oscar for his performance in Ryan's Daughter, but one of his favourite films remains Ice Cold in Alex. In it, he got to kiss Sylvia Sims, a scene which was later cut by the censor for showing too much of her cleavage and which had to be reshot with only three buttons undone instead of four.
