André Ward never played house when he was little, but he always played “New York City Apartment”, and with impressive Broadway credits, he can fully say he's finally living in the midst of his dream. Growing up a “talkative” child, his teacher recommended he might need to find a way to work out some of his excess energy, and so they sent him to a children's theater company and hasn't stopped performing since. He also delves into the challenges of transitioning between theater and film, highlighting the differences in performance styles required for each. Currently playing as Toulouse-Lautrec in "Moulin Rouge! The Musical," Andre takes glee in the opportunity to showcase both his comedic and emotional range. He opens up about his fears and aspirations regarding directing and writing, his dream of playing a sci-fi character, and why he continues to strive for balance between work and his personal life. André Ward is a seasoned Broadway actor with an impressive Broadway resume dating back over 24 years or so, beginning with “Saturday Night Fever”, “Xanadu”, “Rock of Ages”, “Something Rotten”, and “Escape to Margaritaville”. He wrote and produced the Welsh-language feature films Y Sŵn (2023) and Gwledd (2021). “Y Sŵn” won the BAFTA Cymru award for best feature film in 2023 and received a nomination for the Broadcast and Celtic Media Festival awards. The horror film Gwledd premiered at the SXSW festival, is distributed in North America by IFC and in Britain by Picturehouse. He has received awards in numerous festivals including BiFAN, Motel X and Neuchâtel. His TV series “Bang” won best series at the Bafta Cymru and Celtic Media Festival in 2018, for which Williams received a nomination for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain award. His television work includes the original series “Gwaith/Cartref” and “Tir” for Welsh-language broadcaster S4C and numerous other English-language creations for broadcasters BBC and Channel4.Every language achievement is always a starting point, never a point of arrival. The political strength of a minority language is measured not only by its ability to build social and cultural cohesion, but also by the courage and determination with which it succeeds in facing the challenges of the present and the future. A language endures if it can speak to new generations and thus if it's able to regenerate and absorb new languages, meaning if it can make itself speak. Roger Williams' movies, in recounting the political struggle over the creation of the S4C television channel, with its entire programming schedule in Welsh, tells an exemplary story in this respect, not only for its own community. Because it testifies to how important a media perspective that is not purely conservative, but flexible andinnovative, politically useful in the daily struggle that languages sustain in order to maintain themselves as a historical culture and restore their own worldview.IL POSTO DELLE PAROLEascoltare fa pensarewww.ilpostodelleparole.itDiventa un supporter di questo podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/il-posto-delle-parole--1487855/support.

Dorian Harewood's career journey is anything but ordinary, and he's got three wonderful women (and luck) to thank for it. And after over 45 years, he's back on the Broadway stage as Older Noah in “The Notebook”. He shares what made him want to come back, owing it to his manager who pushed him to audition for the role. With almost 200 credits under his name, he looks back on what got him to performing – from starting as a singer and auditioning for a four-year scholarship as advised by his teacher to moving to New York at 22 and doing a musical with the legendary Bette Davis, who also became his acting mentor. He looks back on his first acting role, “Don't Call Back”, and why even though the show opened and closed the same night, it led him to even better opportunities. Being in an industry inherent to rejection and hardship, he discusses the necessity of having hobbies outside of one's profession and pursuing one's passion to help navigate life's challenges. Aside from theater, he actually has more passions: bowling, pool, and blackjack and shares the importance of respecting passions other than theater, whatever they may be, in order to stay happy and healthy. Currently starring as Older Noah in Broadway's “The Notebook”, he talks about the challenge of keeping performances fresh for the audience and the communal experience live theater offers. With so many accomplishments and lasting legacy to leave behind, Dorian isn't done learning new things. He shares his philosophy of viewing every day as a "birthday" and a new beginning, expressing gratitude for life itself. Dorian Harwood made his Broadway acting debut in the 1971 production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”. His additional Broadway credits include “The Mighty Gents”, “Streamers”, and “Don't Call Back”. He pivoted to TV and film for almost the next 50 years, racking up a total of 187 credits on IMDb. His film credits include “Gothika”, “Levity”, “Pacific Heights”, and “Full Metal Jacket”. His TV credits include “7th Heaven”, “Criminal Minds”, “Twelve Angry Men”, and “The Roots: The Next Generations”. He's a voiceover artist for cartoons and video games and is now a Tony-nominated actor for his role as Older Noah in “The Notebook” on Broadway, which also happens to be his first time back on the Broadway stage since 1978. Andrew Samonsky believes that Jerry Garcia's death (yes that Jerry Garcia) may have instigated his performance career in some way. From being a “deadhead” to becoming a Broadway actor, Andrew opens up about his years of following the Grateful Dead and dealing with drug problems that led him to go to rehab. Lost and feeling helpless, he decided to pray to help find his path. He soon received a letter from his old voice teacher encouraging him to pursue a career in singing, and the rest is history. He looks back on his childhood, his love for singing despite being a shy kid, and how, ultimately, theatre and its community are what saved him during his troubled years. Currently playing as Tadeusz Lempicki in “Lempicka”, Andrew shares the story behind his cosmic connection to the show, which goes all the way back to 22 years ago and a random interaction with the Peace Corps. He discusses the challenges and joys of originating a role, the importance of trust and collaboration between actors and creative teams, and the feeling of gratitude for the opportunity to bring characters to life and how it can impact audiences. Andrew Samonsky made his Broadway debut in the 2008 production of “South Pacific” and has additional Broadway credits, including “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”, and “Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson”. His TV credits include “Madam Secretary”, “It Could Be Worse”, and “Elementary”. He can now be seen as Tadeusz Lempicki in the Broadway production of “Lempicka”. Feeling Future Shocked? Got the certainty-addiction blues? This episode dives deep into the ever-shifting currents and consequences of work and innovation. Listen to AQ expert Ira S Wolfe and Michael Lee, a maestro of adaptability, creativity, and innovative thinking. Whether you're staring down the barrel of a job change, wrestling with the march of AI and automation, or simply seeking to thrive in our fast-paced world, this episode is your beacon. Here are eight tremendous takeaways you'll learn about the power of adaptability: “Future Shock” published over 50 years ago, warned us about the paralysis that comes with excessive change, and here we are, dealing with that reality as we look towards the future of employment. The tech tsunami is coming for sure. But remember, the 4th and 5th industrial revolutions are set to create more jobs than they wipe out. Ride the wave with adaptability, not get wiped out by it. The ability to adapt, or what we're calling the 'Adaptability Quotient,' will be an essential skill as we face technological changes that disrupt the job market. The greatest challenge for leaders in the future will be to manage not only their own adaptability but to nurture an environment that supports adaptability in their teams. Future-proof your psychology: Understand how acknowledging the Dunning-Kruger effect can lead to monumental personal growth. The mere thought of adaptability is scarier than the actual hustle of change. It's the boogeyman in the closet of our minds. Creativity is no lone wolf; it runs with a pack called ‘innovation and adaptability'. Together, they're the ultimate dream team for the future of work. Adaptability isn't just about grit; it's knowing when to pivot and how to roll with the punches. *** Michael Lee is the Creative Breakthrough Catalyst, a working creative professional who facilitates breakthroughs for leaders and their teams. Today's guest is screenwriter Brian Herskowitz. He wrote the book called Process to Product: From Concept to Script: A Practical Guide for the Screenwriter. Like millions before him, Brian Herskowitz moved out to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He soon learned that there was a dearth of roles for shorter leading men and began searching for other outlets for his creative passions. In 1980 he wrote his first screenplay, an action thriller about a young man who moves to Tokyo to train for the Olympics in Judo and gets caught up in an intrigue with the Yakuza. Through that script, based on his true-life experience as an international judo competitor, he uncovered a knack and passion for writing. As a writer, Brian has completed well over a dozen feature films. His first produced feature was a low budget slasher titled DARKROOM. He currently has several projects in active development including, THE ABDUCTION, THE EMPRESS OF ELSEWHERE (co-written with Theresa Nelson based on her best selling novel), TAKE A RIDE, and FAIRIES (co-written with Pam Dawber and Andy Tobey). His TV credits include a staff writing position on the NBC sit-com BLOSSOM, multiple episodes of the syndicated series HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS, and ACAPULCO HEAT, the HBO hit comedy DREAM ON, CBS's RENEGADE, THE EXILE, MURDER, SHE WROTE, the FOX Network's YOUNG HERCULES, and CBS's critically acclaimed was series TOUR OF DUTY (associate producer). Brian co-wrote the FOX pilot MANTIC with Jason Alexander. In addition, he worked as a punch-up writer on BOB PATTERSON, and LISTEN UP.Brian currently holds the title of lead faculty in screenwriting for the prestigious BOSTON UNIVERSITY IN LOS ANGELES - WRITER IN HOLLYWOOD PROGRAM. Brian has taught online for UCLA EXTENSTIONS and has had students from every corner of the earth. Enjoy my conversation with Brian Herskowitz.
Chris Martin! Comedian! Friend! Guy with a new album out called "Above Ground Comedian" right now! Delight! And more! We have a great chat! You can have a great listen! And this is only the first HALF of our conversation. For the second half, subscribe via Apple Podcasts OR click on over here to Patreon! ABOUT CHRIS MARTIN: “One of the UK's best young observationalists” according to The Guardian, Martin's Edinburgh Comedy Festival shows have repeatedly sold out with dates added. His personal, anecdotal comedy has earned him numerous invitations to the New Zealand and Melbourne Comedy Festivals. His international touring continues to yield a diverse, unique, and growing collection of stories Martin loves to share with audiences around the world. Chris Martin has toured in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. His TV credits include The Late Late Show with James Corden (CBS), I Think You Should Leave (Netflix), Live at The Comedy Store (Comedy Central), Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, and ITVs Horrible Science. His first original podcast (The Carl & Chris Comedy Podcast) was invited to be part of Bill Burr's podcast network All Things Comedy. Now living in Los Angeles, Martin was recently a writer on the The Late Late Show with James Corden as well as XO KITTY on NETFLIX. AND FROM THE PRESS RELEASE ABOUT HIS NEW ALBUM: Blonde Medicine and Chris Martin are pleased to announce the Friday, February 23, 2024 release of Martin's sophomore full-length comedy album Above Ground Comedian, available everywhere streaming audio is enjoyed. It has been just about two years since the release of his debut album All Over the Place, and since then the U.K.-bred Martin has been observing and cataloging hilarious stories about the shortcomings of veganism, surviving marriage and long trips to Vegas, and living in Los Angeles as a Brit: “I have a small dog and I'm vegan so I've really assimilated to the culture. I just need some Botox to complete my hat trick of the ‘most-LA' stereotypes”. Martin deftly mines his cultural assimilation, how his parents inform his own recent foray into parenthood, and of course….his dog's butt. A stand-up veteran of nearly two decades, Martin was mesmerized as a teen by Eddie Murphy's Raw. “I wanted to be able to do that. I wish I could pull off the shiny purple tight-outfit but sadly my legs are too skinny to make it work.” Martin leaned on these years of experience when, the night before recording Above Ground Comedian, he performed a warm-up show in Baltimore that he purports to be his worst show in ten years. A late-show at a venue that never does late-shows, a blind-drunk audience… “When I was newer as a comic I would have been annoyed, but the gig was so unplayable I just started laughing on stage at how bad it was. I knew at the very least my album recording would be better than that!” We're happy to report that the taping was fabulous, and the proof is Above Ground Comedian!

Our show's 75th episode has a special guest in Jayson Stark, one of the most well-respected, well-liked baseball writers for more than 40 years. His passion for the game and craft shines through as he discusses growing up as Stan Hochman's pen pal, studying Peter Gammons early in his career, and mentoring other young reporters. Jayson has some wild tales – including a near punch by Dickie Noles, and Dallas Green's special gift – from being a beat writer covering the early '80s Philadelphia Phillies. Hear how Jayson developed his weekly baseball column, renowned since 1983 for humor, oddball stats and offbeat facts. He tells us about a World Series game that he considers the best in history. And there's even a story connecting a Sammy Sosa homer and a certain Frenchman. The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Stark the 2019 winner of its Career Excellence Award, which he received at the Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Jayson worked 21 years at his hometown Philadelphia Inquirer, first serving as the Phillies' beat reporter (1979-82) and then becoming the paper's national baseball writer and columnist in '83. His Baseball Week in Review column proved so popular in syndication that it continued after he was hired by ESPN in 2000. For the next 17 years, Stark served as a senior baseball writer for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine while making regular appearances on the cable network's TV shows “Baseball Tonight,” “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines,” as well as regular ESPN Radio guest spots on “Mike and Mike” and as co-host of a weekly radio show during the baseball season on ESPN Radio's affiliate in Philadelphia. His TV work includes appearances on Major League Baseball Productions, NFL Films and Philadelphia's Comcast SportsNet. He is also a former baseball analyst for the Sports Fan radio network and a commentator on the Phillies' pregame radio show. Despite his popularity and proficiency, Stark was laid off by ESPN in April 2017. He has been covering baseball at The Athletic and MLB Network since 2018. Jayson also served as a columnist for Baseball America for 16 years and has written for Sports Illustrated, Sport, Inside Sports, Sporting News, Men's Fitness and Athlon. His first job in journalism was at the Providence Journal (1975-78). Stark has won an Emmy for his work on "Baseball Tonight," has been inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and is a two-time winner of the Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year award given by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was a finalist for that group's National Sportswriter of the Year award in 2017. Stark was honored by Penn State's Foster Conference for Distinguished Writers in 2010. He has won several awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, and he was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. That year, Topps issued a Jayson Stark baseball card. Jayson is the author of three books: “Wild Pitches: Rumblings, Grumblings, and Reflections on the Game I Love” (2014) “Worth The Wait: Tales of the 2008 Phillies” (2011) “The Stark Truth: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players in Baseball History” (2007) Stark earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Syracuse University in 1973. He was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the city's Northeast section. His mother, June Herder Stark, wrote for the Philadelphia Record and worked alongside legendary sportswriter Red Smith. She later edited the Philadelphia edition of Where Magazine. You can follow Stark on X: @jaysonst Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The towering TV writer/producer died last week at 101. He created All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude, and a lot more. His TV shows used humor to address subjects not typical for television: racism, homophobia, politics, and generational conflicts. His most enduring character, Archie Bunker, the bigoted father of a working class family in Queens – was partly based on Lear's own father. We'll listen back to our interview with Lear, as well as with Esther Rolle. Initially, she was reluctant to play the role of the maid, Florida, on Maude, but that led to her own spinoff series, Good Times. And we also hear from TV director John Rich, who directed All in the Family.

We've had a lot of different feelings about Johnny Depp, the May 1990 cover boy, over the course of our lives, and while we might want to distance ourselves from the people we were in May 1990, when he was about as hot and sexy as he would ever be...we can't; we have to talk about him -- not only because there's a feature profile on him, but because he's all over the rest of the magazine too! His TV show, 21 Jump Street, comes up in What Now as the source material Dick Wolf's Nasty Boys is obviously ripping off! His new movie, Cry-Baby is reviewed in Watch It! Even his fiancée, Winona Ryder, comes up in the blurb on One To Watch Samantha Mathis! And then the profile itself is almost all just first-person quotes from Depp himself. It's a Deppth charge of complicated memories, and we do our best to sort through them in our latest Pop Culture episode! QUICK LINKS
