Rizzuto is back from France, which means it's finally time to answer the question nobody asked: Can one man visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world and still come home with enough complaints to fill a morning show? Oui.Episode 114 begins back home in St. Louis with an Amber Alert that woke up half the city before taking a bizarre turn, plus Scott's live music adventure at Copper Fire, where the performance went great once the minor technical issue of the speakers actually producing sound was finally addressed. We also learn that Rizzuto is approaching the end of age 47, supposedly the happiest year of his life. Great news to discover right before it expires.Then comes important local Italian-American business: the world's oldest ravioli maker is opening its first U.S. manufacturing facility in St. Charles. Naturally, Rizzuto immediately begins wondering why his invitation to the ribbon cutting hasn't arrived. If there's a giant ravioli involved and this man isn't allowed to emerge from it holding an oversized pizza cutter, then frankly, what are we even doing here?But the main event is Rizzuto's triumphant return from Paris.He kept notes.A lot of notes.There are positives. The Paris Catacombs were incredible, featuring the bones of millions of people and the mildly unsettling realization that apparently enough tourists try to steal human remains that bags need to be checked on the way out. A nighttime river cruise delivered gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower. There were baguettes. There was an absolutely elite steak sandwich. And yes, Paris itself occasionally managed to impress our extremely difficult international correspondent.Unfortunately for France, this is a comedy podcast, so we also need to discuss the complaints.Why is getting cold water apparently an international negotiation? Where is the ice? Why won't restaurants bring the check? Why does everything close when Rizzuto needs something? Is air conditioning merely a rumor Europeans started to make Americans feel comfortable booking flights? Is the Mona Lisa overrated? Is the Eiffel Tower overrated? Is the food overrated? And why did an Airbnb leave the family sweating in a hallway for 45 minutes while they tried to figure out how to get inside?Then there's transportation.One cab driver allegedly takes the scenic interpretation of “wrong direction,” keeps the meter running, and eventually gets into a heated French argument with Rizzuto. Rizzuto attempts to hold firm on the fare and ultimately negotiates himself a breathtaking discount of roughly fifteen bucks. International diplomacy is alive and well.The crew eventually tallies Rizzuto's Paris complaints, because apparently his vacation needed independent auditing.Travel chaos continues with a kid refusing to buckle a seatbelt and helping get an entire flight canceled overnight. From there, we examine airport security and the long-running liquid restrictions that have forced generations of travelers to choose between personal hygiene and bringing enough shampoo to survive Tuesday.Somehow this becomes a discussion involving Die Hard with a Vengeance, Jeremy Irons, TSA logic, confiscated hairspray and the exact amount of liquid apparently required before civilization collapses.And after all the monuments, bones, baguettes, questionable air conditioning, transportation drama and French customer service, Rizzuto finally lands back in St. Louis and realizes something important:He loves it here.Nothing makes home look better than an international vacation and a lukewarm glass of water.It's travel stories, St. Louis nonsense, weird news, daily humor and several completely unnecessary arguments packed into another comedy podcast from The Rizzuto Show.Come for the Paris vacation recap. This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we complete our accidental trilogy of “third things.” After covering Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the midweek show, we turn to Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi's third Evil Dead film, and use that as an excuse to dig into the noble, messy and often suspicious art of the threequel.There is no formal intro this week — time has apparently been attacked by Deadites — so we open with a catch-up on what everyone has been watching. Reegs has been busy with Backrooms, Obsession, Disclosure Day and Apple TV's Cape Fear, which gets a recommendation so long as you know going in that it is extremely ridiculous. Sidey has finally finished The Pit, finding the second season weaker than the first but still worth the time, and has also watched Backrooms and started The Mandalorian. Dan has finished series five of Slow Horses, which he continues to push as an absolute treat, and has also seen The Odyssey at the cinema, where three hours apparently went by surprisingly quickly.That leads us into the usual wandering preamble: 4DX screenings with shaking seats, water and wind; panoramic side-screen cinema formats; the Sphere in Vegas; Sidey somehow still not having made it to IMAX; Spider-Man: Brand New Day and big cinema opening weekends; Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal on Hot Ones; and the general horror of people getting overconfident with hot sauce before reality arrives in liquid form.The Top 5 this week is third films in a franchise, which gives us one of those lists where genuinely great films sit shoulder to shoulder with absolute nonsense. Dan opens strongly with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, a film that swept the Oscars so hard it practically brought its own broom. Sidey goes for Toy Story 3, remembering Lotso, Spanish Buzz, the daycare escape, the furnace sequence and the emotional finality of Andy giving up his toys. Reegs makes a spirited defence of The Matrix Revolutions, arguing that its uneasy truce ending and refusal to give everyone a simple victory has aged better than its reputation suggests.From there, we move through Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Sean Connery, River Phoenix and the Holy Grail; The Bourne Ultimatum, which Sidey remembers as peak Jason Bourne closure and kinetic shaky-cam action; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, praised by Reegs for Rocket's unexpectedly emotional backstory; The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, because Frank Drebin remains Frank Drebin; and Die Hard with a Vengeance, which gives Sidey an excuse to talk about Zeus, Simon Says, Jeremy Irons and New York puzzle chaos.There are plenty of other third-film detours too, including RoboCop 3, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Alien 3, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Back to the Future Part III, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Cornetto trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Blade: Trinity, Karate Kid Part III and Ocean's 13. Sidey bends the rules by choosing the third episode of Twin Peaks, “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer,” while Dan lands on Before Midnight, the third film in Richard Linklater's Before trilogy.Eventually, we arrive in 1300 AD for Army of Darkness itself. Dan has not seen it, but has correctly gathered that this is not really the same kind of horror film as The Evil Dead. Reegs, who has seen it many times, explains the tonal journey of the series: the first film as bleak, grimy horror; Evil Dead II as a genuine horror-comedy masterpiece; and Army of Darkness as the point where Ash becomes the full cartoon version of himself — part action hero, part idiot, part Bruce Campbell chin-delivery system.We talk about Sam Raimi's direction, Bill Pope's cinematography before The Matrix, Danny Elfman's contribution to the score, and the way Raimi's visual energy clearly echoes forward into later filmmakers such as Edgar Wright. The plot is gloriously simple and gloriously stupid: Ash is dragged through time after Evil Dead II, lands in the middle of a medieval conflict between Lord Arthur and Henry the Red, gets thrown into a pit, fights Deadites, reclaims his chainsaw hand, introduces everyone to the boomstick, and immediately becomes insufferable once the locals start treating him as their prophesied saviour.The film then sends Ash off to retrieve the Necronomicon, with one very clear instruction: say the words “Klaatu barada nikto” before taking the book. Naturally, Ash being Ash, he half-remembers, fudges it and unleashes the titular army of darkness. Along the way we get the windmill sequence, tiny mirror Ashes, Three Stooges slapstick, bad Ash splitting out of good Ash, Sheila falling for exactly the worst man available, and a castle siege finale full of skeletons, homemade weapons, a modified car and Ray Harryhausen-style chaos.We also get into the two endings: the darker UK/director's cut version, where Ash takes too many drops and wakes up in a ruined future, and the more crowd-pleasing US S-Mart ending, where he returns to work, tells the story and gets one last heroic Deadite showdown. Reegs prefers the bleaker ending because it feels funnier and more in keeping with Ash's ability to mess up almost everything.The verdict is affectionate, even if slightly qualified. Reegs still thinks Evil Dead II is the one to watch if you only watch one Evil Dead film, and he does not think Army of Darkness is great in quite the same way. But it is funny, quotable, inventive and packed with cult moments: the boomstick, S-Mart, “primitive screwheads,” bad magic words, skeleton armies and Bruce Campbell at maximum Ash. Sidey thinks Dan would probably enjoy it, describing it as something like The Princess Bride with Ray Harryhausen effects and comedy horror nonsense thrown in.So the final recommendation is simple: if you only watch one, Reegs says watch Evil Dead II. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay are back from suspension, and are on the case to talk about one of the sweatiest action movies of all-time, 'Die Hard with a Vengeance.' Andy kicks off the episode by recalling when he saw this movie with his grandpa and it led to his school bringing in a social worker. Then the boys borrow a quarter to make a call on a payphone and tell the audience how this belongs in the annals of the franchise's original entry as a masterpiece. John McTiernan lends his steady hand to the proceedings, as the movie catapults the viewer straight into the uncontained action sequences captured with real location shots in '90s New York. Some of the location action is so insane it seems that stunt people (or extras) were certainly maimed while filming. The guys also talk about the sandwich board scene which led to the second funniest edited-for-TV moments in 'Die Hard' history. Bruce Willis' John McClane may have been suffering through a hangover the entire movie, but fortunately this movie was shot back when both Willis and Samuel L. Jackson gave a damn. Along with the chemistry of the two leads is a wonderfully hammy performance from the usually-refined Jeremy Irons as the baddie. The cast is then filled out with incredible character actors, and a number of real-life New Yahkers who capture the powder keg feeling that can only be emulated in the streets of NYC. This episode's so good that you'll be calling your ex at the end to tell them you love them, and they should listen too. 

La memoria oral indígena y nuevas investigaciones muestran cómo las misiones jesuíticas en Paraguay no solo fueron un refugio sinónimo de progreso para los guaraníes, sino que también fueron un instrumento de control, despojo de tierras, trabajos forzados e imposición cultural. Hoy, guías guaraníes empiezan a contar su propia versión en las ruinas, completando una historia que durante siglos fue narrada casi exclusivamente por voces europeas. Un reportaje de Santi Carneri. Cuando pensamos en las Misiones Jesuíticas solemos recordar la película La Misión, estrenada en 1986 y protagonizada por Robert De Niro y Jeremy Irons. Algunos recordarán iglesias monumentales, esculturas barrocas y coros indígenas interpretando música sacra. Durante siglos, la historia oficial de la Iglesia Católica contó que los jesuitas llegaron para salvar a los guaraníes de la esclavitud, enseñarles nuevos oficios y construir junto a ellos una experiencia de hermandad entre europeos y nativos. Algo extraordinario en la América colonial. Todavía hoy miles de turistas recorren las ruinas de Trinidad, Jesús o San Cosme y Damián en Paraguay para admirar ese legado. Pero existe otra versión de la historia. Una que rara vez aparece en los libros escolares. Una historia transmitida por los propios guaraníes de generación en generación y refrendada por historiadoras y antropólogos de ambos lados del Atlántico. Porque aquellas misiones no sólo fueron iglesias y prosperidad. A comienzos del siglo 17, los jesuitas fundaron una red de pueblos que se extendió por los actuales territorios de Paraguay, Argentina y Brasil. En total llegaron a consolidarse 30 reducciones, llamadas así porque reducían a un pequeño espacio a miles de familias guaraníes que solían vivir en el bosque en grandes extensiones de tierra. “Quizás fue la mejor opción” La versión tradicional de los hispanistas religiosos y nacionalistas españoles explica que estos pueblos nacieron para evangelizar y proteger a los indígenas. Una versión que sigue en boga entre influencers y guías turísticos. “Allí se crearon 30 reducciones jesuíticas, donde convivieron con el mismo estatus social los padres jesuitas y los indios guaraníes, protegidos por las leyes de la corona española que prohibían la esclavitud, la explotación y otras injusticias similares”, afirma un influencer. Ana Belén Espinosa, coordinadora de Patrimonio de las Misiones Jesuíticas de Paraguay, explica a RFI que “estas misiones jesuíticas nacen con el objetivo de evangelizar a los nativos y protegerlos también en lo que era esta selva antiguamente. En esa época los guaraníes estaban expuestos a ser llevados, a trabajar como esclavos por los bandoleros portugueses o a ser sometidos al sistema de encomienda”. “Entonces, si bien por ahí esa evangelización significaba una ruptura de la propia cultura de los indígenas, algo negativo por decir, en esa época quizás fue la mejor opción, ya que los indígenas estaban también expuestos a estos otros peligros”, subraya. La amenaza era real. Durante décadas, los colonizadores españoles y grupos armados portugueses conocidos como “bandeirantes” penetraron en la región para capturar a indígenas y venderlos esclavizados. Varias misiones fueron atacadas y saqueadas. Ante esa situación, los jesuitas ofrecían refugio. Pero los trabajos de historiadores como Pablo Rodríguez Pérez, de la Universidad de Salamanca, o la antropóloga argentina Laura Szmulewicz, recuerdan que las reducciones también respondían a otro objetivo: concentrar a poblaciones indígenas dispersas para facilitar su control. No eran solamente refugios, también eran instrumentos del proyecto colonial.   “Nuestra sociedad y nuestras sociedades están tomando esa historia de las misiones jesuíticas con los guaraníes y otros pueblos indígenas, como una historia según el gusto. Para algunos es una historia difícil y conflictiva, para otros es una historia feliz", dice a RFI Benno Glauser, investigador de origen suizo afincado en Paraguay que trabaja con pueblos indígenas desde hace más de 30 años. Glauser destaca que la actividad de los religiosos europeos trajo una modificación profunda - hasta tergiversación - del idioma guaraní en sus variados dialéctos hablados por los diferentes pueblos guaraníticos. La modificación refleja la religión y cultura de los misioneros. Para dar un ejemplo: el sufijo "-mi" en el idioma Mbya- Guaraní tal como hoy lo encontramos todavía en sus cantos religiosos señalaba algo sagrado; en el guaraní paraguayo de hoy significa meramente "pequeño". “Una imposición de cultura y creencia” Las misiones supusieron también la pérdida de tierras, trabajos forzados, imposición cultural y resistencia, mucha resistencia. Tres siglos después, en Paraguay se da un hecho insólito e histórico: tres guías turísticos guaraníes han comenzado a contar esa otra versión. La que escucharon de sus abuelos. Por primera vez ambas historias pueden escucharse juntas. Entre las ruinas de San Cosme y San Damián trabaja el joven guía Verá Miri, aunque en su identificación laboral aparece otro nombre, Lucas. “Sí, tengo mi nombre guaraní, mi nombre nativo es Vera Mini. Vera Mini. Significa pequeño brillante”, comenta. Verá Mirí vive en su comunidad, no muy lejos de la misión, donde resisten precariamente pese a la enorme riqueza agrícola que los rodea. Todos los grandes hacendados que poseen miles de hectáreas de tierra son de origen español, alemán e incluso ruso. Pero los guaraníes han quedado recluidos en pocas hectáreas. Las únicas, por cierto, donde se conserva el bosque nativo. Cuando explica las misiones a los visitantes, Verá Mirí comienza donde muchos relatos oficiales terminan: en la tierra. “Sí, primeramente en realidad los europeos sacaron tierra de los guaraníes. Anteriormente habitaban solo los guaraníes. Y en realidad fue una invasión para los guaraníes. Y nos quitaron nuestra tierra. Desde ahí los guaraníes ya no pudieron vivir como antes, o sea, como vivían anteriormente. Fue una nueva imposición de cultura, de creencia para los guaraníes”, cuenta. Las impresionantes construcciones que hoy admiran los turistas fueron levantadas por miles de indígenas. Piedras extraídas a kilómetros de distancia y transportadas sin maquinaria alguna. “Los guaraníes fueron los que hicieron las manos de obra. Esa piedra los guaraníes la sacaban de una alquería que está a seis kilómetros de acá”, explica el guía. La historiografía tradicional suele destacar la prosperidad económica de las misiones. Los guaraníes producían ganado, cultivaban alimentos y desarrollaron plantaciones de yerba mate. Pero la memoria oral conserva otro recuerdo, apunta Verá Mirí: “Para esa época fue un trabajo pesado para los guaraníes. Y ellos trabajaban como esclavos porque no había tecnología como hoy en día”. Una relación compleja y teñida de resistencia La relación entre jesuitas y guaraníes fue mucho más compleja de lo que sugieren los relatos simplificados. Por un lado, las misiones protegían a los indígenas de los esclavistas portugueses. Por otro, exigían obediencia. Los investigadores han documentado castigos físicos dentro de las reducciones. Algunos jesuitas describieron cómo mujeres y niños eran azotados para corregir conductas consideradas inapropiadas. La vida cotidiana estaba cuidadosamente regulada. Trabajo, oración, horarios y disciplina formaban parte del sistema. “Los europeos ya también usaban armas y sí o sí obligaban a los guaraníes a asistir a la misa, trabajar, y les decían que los iban a proteger también de los bandoleros, porque había grupos que perseguía mucho a los guaraníes”, subraya Verá Mirí. Sin embargo, la realidad no fue igual para todos. Algunos guaraníes encontraron en las reducciones una forma de escapar de la esclavitud. Otros aceptaron la nueva organización social. Pero muchos se resistieron. “La relación entre los religiosos y los guaraníes es un tema complejo, ¿verdad? Porque como todas las historias, tiene sus matices”, comenta Ana Belén Espinosa. Existe una imagen muy extendida e interesada que presenta a los indígenas como espectadores pasivos de la historia. Pero los documentos muestran algo diferente. Cuando los bandeirantes atacaron las reducciones, miles de guaraníes tomaron las armas. En 1641, derrotaron a los esclavistas portugueses en la batalla de Mbororé. Y años más tarde protagonizarían otra rebelión todavía más importante, la Guerra Guaranítica, entre 1754 y 1756. Todo comenzó cuando España y Portugal acordaron intercambiar territorios. Casi 30.000 guaraníes debían abandonar las tierras donde habían vivido durante generaciones. Muchos se negaron y se enfrentaron a los ejércitos de ambas coronas. Los guaraníes no estaban dispuestos a aceptar cualquier decisión impuesta desde Europa. Darle voz a las comunidades guaraníes Durante mucho tiempo, la historia de las misiones fue contada principalmente por cronistas religiosos e historiadores europeos. Los guaraníes aparecían en ella, pero rara vez hablaban con su propia voz. Eso empezó a cambiar en 2017. “Empezamos a darle protagonismo a estas personas de las comunidades guaraníes. Empezamos a aprender muchísimo de ellos y eso también transformó las visitas. Si por ahí antes hacíamos visitas que tenían un tenor histórico, arquitectónico, hoy en día se hacen unas visitas que transmiten lo que tiene que ver con el modo de ver, el modo de vivir de las comunidades guaraníes”, detalla comenta Ana Belén Espinosa. Hoy los visitantes no sólo aprenden sobre arquitectura barroca. También escuchan historias sobre el idioma guaraní, los conocimientos ancestrales y la forma en que las comunidades recuerdan aquel pasado. Para Verá Mirí, la supervivencia de esa memoria tiene una explicación sencilla. “Según mi abuelo, me contaron que, los guaraníes no les dan tanta importancia a las reducciones jesuíticas porque fue un lugar donde los guaraníes sufrieron mucho, donde murieron muchos niños, donde fueron esclavizadas muchas personas. Por eso los guaraníes no ven como algo 100% positivo a las reducciones jesuíticas”, afirma. “Los guaraníes que pudieron escaparse, que no se dejaron dominar por los europeos, son los guaraníes que pudieron mantener la cultura y salvaron la cultura guaraní”, recalca. Las ruinas siguen en pie. Las mismas piedras que unos contemplan como símbolo de fe, organización y progreso, y que otros recuerdan como testimonio de despojo, sufrimiento y resistencia. Quizá ambas visiones sean ciertas, porque las misiones jesuíticas fueron muchas cosas al mismo tiempo y durante mucho tiempo. No se trata de borrar la versión oficial, sino de completarla. Porque la historia nunca pertenece a una sola voz, y durante demasiado tiempo, una de ellas permaneció silenciada.

Chris Paul and Burning Bright dig into the 2016 Justin Kurzel film Assassin's Creed, based on the long-running Ubisoft video game series and starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Charlotte Rampling. Both guys agree the movie underdelivers on its concept but is way better than the brutal reviews it received at the time, and the conceptual material gives them plenty to chew on. The conversation winds through how open world game engines build only what the player can see (a great metaphor for our own constructed reality), the eerie 2013 trailer for Ubisoft's The Division that predicted COVID with unsettling accuracy, and how Xbox lobbies and 4chan were quietly red-pilling young men years before MAGA existed. From there they dig into the philosophical heart of the film: the Templars chasing the Apple of Eden to eliminate free will, the assassins as imperfect guardians of human sovereignty, and whether a secret society fighting for the people can ever really be on the people's side. They close with the surveillance state as a counterfeit god, JFK's warning about secrecy, and why morality has to be inherent rather than coded by law.

Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we discuss David Cronenberg, one of the truly great Canadian geniuses and the filmmaker credited with the advent of “body horror” (a distinction he bristles against, for what it's worth). Our B-Sides today include Fast Company, The Brood, M. Butterfly, and Spider. Our guest today is the incomparable Veronica Fitzpatrick, professor at Brown University and Editor-at-Large and Podcast Co-Host at Bright Wall/Dark Room.  We talk about how handsome Oliver Reed is in The Brood, how Cronenberg's films often start with a bang, how misguided M. Butterfly is, and how Fast Company was, in fact, a movie directed by David Cronenberg. There's talk of his novel Consumed, his multiple collaborations with certain great performers like Jeremy Irons, and his incredible, intellectual mind. This is a man who has adapted Stephen King, William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, J.G. Ballard, and Patrick McGrath. What range! There's the real-life French diplomat on which M. Butterfly is based, as well as the metatextual nature of both Cronenberg's adaptation of David Henry Hwang and his later picture A Dangerous Method. It's Cronenberg taking stock of the psychology of his own films! Fascinating. Veronica mentions B.D.
