We are in the middle of a 'creativity crisis' - with so many people are distracted, unable to focus and lacking in connection. So what to do about it? Here to help me unpick how we can find more flow, creativity, connection, peace and ease - is Chris Smith, an award-winning author, broadcaster and stand-up comedian. For many years we sat alongside each other in the Newsbeat studio on BBC Radio 1. We discuss: How to get into flow and tap into the 'intelligent unconscious' The relationship between unplugging and creativity Why we love losing ourself in what we are doing, and how modern life is killing that Recognising that the future is never as bad as we fear it will be when it arrives as 'the present' How to develop a different relationship with our thoughts How to cultivate the space for true creativity to arrive The value of having a sauna I am creating a course about Banishing Burnout and Finding Flow - which I will be sharing more about that over coming weeks and months. Together we can create a new way of being - one that is less distracted and combative, and has more flow and peace. “Once there were three baby owls: Sarah and Percy and Bill. They lived in a hole in the trunk of a tree with their Owl Mother…” [1] These are the first lines in the children's picture book Owl Babies. One night the three children wake up and find that their mother has gone. The older two siblings have theories about where their mother went and wavering confidence that she will return. The youngest one Bill just repeats “I want my mommy.” It is a simple story about growing up, about the difficult task of learning to become separate from our parents. Sweet Alexandra loved owls, animals, babies and the experience of childhood itself. This was her favorite story and the basis for her nickname “Owlexandra” or just plain “Owl.” It is hard to move gracefully from being a child to adulthood. It is hard to leave behind our childhood especially when we are very well adapted to it. It is hard to care for children in this time of transition. It is hard to be a child, or the friend of a child, who is becoming an adult. Stories help to guide us as we make our way. Alexandra loved stories like Frozen, Wicked, and Hamilton. Her mother is American and her father is from England so they read quite a variety of stories including those of the British author Enid Blyton (1897-1968). In Five on a Treasure Island the first book in the Famous Five series, Julian, Dick and Anne are on their way to spend their first summer away from their parents, at the seashore home of their uncle and aunt, and their cousin Georgina and her dog Timmy. “The car suddenly topped a hill – and there was the shining blue sea, calm and smooth in the evening sun…” At the house they meet their aunt for the first time (and they “liked the look of her”). She says, “Welcome to Kirrin [Bay]… Hallo, all of you! It's lovely to see you… There were kisses all round, and then the children went into the house. They liked it. It felt old and rather mysterious somehow, and the furniture was old and very beautiful.” [2] These books are filled with secret passageways, hidden treasure, stolen goods, old maps, smugglers, spies and suspicious strangers. But ultimately bravery, perseverance, kindness and loyalty are always rewarded. In the end everything is perfectly resolved and clear. You know where everyone stands. There is no gray area or ambiguity. You might say that real life is not like this and you would be right. Each of us is a mixture of good and bad. But we need each other to remind us to feed what is good in us every day so that we grow in kindness. I love the way Alexandra's parents talk about her as a “gift from God” and uniquely filled with Christmas magic. In London her older sibling asked Father Christmas (or Santa Claus) for a little sister and ten months later she arrived. Alexandra was an angel in our Christmas pageant right here where I am standing. At the age of three she fell in love with the realistic looking babies in the FAO Schwartz store window. She loved children and animals. The Marin Primary motto is “treasuring childhood” and Alexandra did. She participated in theater, sports like cross country. She made art including a painting based on the work of Keith Haring. One of the greatest treasures in this Cathedral is a triptych that Keith Haring (1958-1990) finished only weeks before his death from AIDS. It shows a mother holding her baby surrounded by joyful angels. Alexandra knew that the most important question for a child is not what do you want to be when you grow up. It is who do you want to be; or better how do you want to be. Alexandra was empathetic, a thoughtful caregiver who valued kindness above everything else. This way of being matches the values of this Cathedral where it is not about who is in or out, who is good or evil, who is saved or damned. The style of faith here is not about condemning other people or other religions. It is not overly preoccupied with the sin which is so evident in the world, the cruelty and unkindness that lead to tragedies like a young person's death. Instead we believe that God loves everyone without exception. We hold a faith that arises chiefly out of gratitude, out of an experience of nature's beauty and the simple pleasure of being kind and helping the people who travel along with us. Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart… Blessed are the peacemakers” and we try to be people who build bridges and look for the best in others. We sing “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.” And in the midst of terrible tragedy we remember what a gift our life is. At the end of the service my friend Luis will sing a poem by the sixteenth century Anglican priest George Herbert. It ends with these words. They are a kind of invitation to God. “Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a Joy, as none can move: Such a Love, as none can part: Such a Heart, as joys in love.” Love and joy – these are the qualities exemplified by God. They are the possibilities that we realize in our own life. Jesus does not say much about what happens after we die, about what the poet Mary Oliver calls “that cottage of darkness.” But he does say over and over that God is like a loving parent, an Owl Mother if you will, who always returns, who cares for us as every day of our life as we face the struggles of maturing. And I imagine heaven as like the opening of an Enid Blyton book, the beginning of summer when suddenly we come across “the shining blue sea, calm and smooth in the evening sun,” and we are welcomed with “kisses all round” into an old house and a new adventure. And we will see again our lovely Owl as a kind of angel filled with kindness and the magic of Christmas. [1] “Once there were three baby owls: Sarah and Percy and Bill. They lived in a hole in the trunk of a tree with their Owl Mother. The hole had twigs and leaves and owl feathers in it. It was their house.” Martin Waddell, Illustrated by Patrick Benson, Owl Babies (Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press, 1992). [2] Enid Blyton, Five on a Treasure Island Illustrated by Ellen A. Soper (NY: Hatchette Children's Books, 1997 originally published in 1942), 7-9.

Nellie McClung was a provocative woman, stirring up controversies and column inches in her own lifetime and in all the years since she died. Arguably Canada's most famous first-wave feminist, her efforts guaranteed that Manitoba's women won the provincial vote in 1916, a first in Canada. She was also one of The Famous Five, the group of activists who won the right for Canadian women to be considered as legal ‘persons' under the law. On the other hand, Nellie is also the first woman we've featured on this podcast to have been literally burned in effigy—and many of her opinions from the 1910s and 1920s are roundly criticized today. Controversial? Chances are, Nellie ‘Shanty Irish' McClung wouldn't have had it any other way.

In 1996, Sue Stockdale achieved a remarkable feat: she became the first British woman to set foot on the Magnetic North Pole, a journey she never thought possible. What followed was a realisation that her success held a profound purpose—to inspire others to venture beyond their comfort zones and unearth their untapped potential. Sue's captivating memoir, "EXPLORE: A Life of Adventure," chronicles her life's journey, commencing from challenging beginnings and extending into a lifetime of intrepid exploration in some of the world's harshest environments, including the North Pole, Antarctica, and Greenland. Within these epic adventures lie invaluable life lessons that Sue readily shares, illustrating how the mindset, discipline, and commitment honed in the crucible of extreme exploration are equally applicable in the professional sphere. "EXPLORE" serves as a wellspring of inspiration, urging all of us to embark on our personal odysseys of self-discovery. Sue firmly believes that no endeavour is too daunting when undertaken with determination, a well-conceived plan, and a readiness to embrace discomfort. *** The Tough Girl Podcast is being sponsored throughout January by ZOLEO. #ChallengeWithZOLEO ZOLEO connects with your phone to provide seamless global messaging that follows you in and out of mobile network coverage — plus added safety features you can count on worldwide including industry-leading SOS alerting features. 24/7 monitoring and 24/7 access to non-emergency medical advice, check-in and weather forecasts. Richard Sparks has been successful in so much of his work from writing The Schoolmaster, performed by Rowan Atkinson, to aiding an opera singer to launch her career. The one area he couldn't seem to get into was fiction writing, until now that is. On today's episode, I am so excited to have writer and author Richard Sparks on the show to discuss his prior pieces of work as well as his new fantasy novel! Richard shares what it was like to work with John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, and others. At the end of the episode, we hear a clip from his new fantasy story, New Rock New Role that talks about a man who gets sucked into a video game and is trying to understand how he got there. This is Richard's take on how it would feel to be a character in one of the games that he frequently plays. The clip we hear is from early on in the book and series, and there is more to come! Grab a free audio book chapter and ebook chapter or buy the full novel released December 12 on his website - www.richardsparks.com! IN THIS EPISODE:[1:37] Richard tells us about what he's been doing and the work he's done with John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson and others.[6:38] A clip from The Schoolmaster by Richard Sparks and Rowan Atkinson.[10:14] Richard tells us about his experience in the music industry. [11:58] Richard shares about his new project, a fantasy, and how it was inspired from real life. [19:45] A clip from New Rock New Role read and written by Richard Sparks. KEY TAKEAWAYS:Richard doesn't take credit for launching people off into their careers, he says they are all a collaborative relationship, where both sides are needed to be successful. Comedy is fear and pain and misery and disasters and things going wrong and people falling into puddles and betrayals and miscommunications and what good adventure isn't full of that.Richard struggled to become a fiction writer because he couldn't connect with the content. He has now finally embraced fiction writing now that he can use his own voice.Check out HelloFresh and use my code truefictionprojectfree for a great deal: https://www.hellofresh.com/Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.com/Fiction and Schoolmaster Credits:Excerpt written by: Richard SparksExcerpt narrated by: Richard SparksSchoolmaster Clip performed by: Rowan AtkinsonSchoolmaster Clio written by Richard SparksBIO:Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he read English), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine o'clock News. WARREN CUMMINGS REMEMBERS PARKINSON First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 26th 2023 Back in August this year, the lights came down on yet another of the broadcasting giants from the younger lives of many of us, when MICHAEL PARKINSON, the person who many considered to be one of the greatest television interviewers ever, passed on at the grand old age of eighty-eight. A cornerstone of British television throughout the 1970s and beyond, “PARKY” was a no-nonsense Yorkshireman whose journalistic career took him from the Manchester Guardian via CINEMA on Granada Television, all the way to the BBC where he was finally given his eponymous chat show PARKINSON which ran from 1971 to 1982, and again from 1998 to 2007. In his own distinctive style, he interviewed many of the most famous people in the world, including many of the brightest stars from the golden era of Hollywood that he would have grown up watching in the cinemas of Barnsley, in shows that have since become some of the most memorable and valued video documents of their time. And whilst his presenting skills were utilised on radio in DESERT ISLAND DISCS, and in many television shows such as GIVE US A CLUE, meaning he has over 450 television presenting credits to his name, including a memorable acting turn in the VISION ON SOUND favourite GHOSTWATCH, he was also one of the “Famous Five” who helped set up GOOD MORNING BRITAIN in 1983. Anyway, WARREN CUMMINGS is a huge fan of dear old PARKY, and so we got together a few weeks ago and had a good old reminisce about our own memories of watching MICHAEL PARKINSON's television interviewing career, and we also talk a little about the legacy he left, and the current state of the art of the television interview. No matter how hard you may try, it's impossible to ignore the imminent arrival of Christmas markets to Germany. While we look forward to the lovely treats on offer, Dili is preoccupied with the availability of roasted chestnuts, and whether they will be better than the ones she's been making at home. Famous for the largest Christmas market in Germany, we turn to Nürnberg, but less for the festive cheer and more for some sheepy visitors to the city centre. From Christmas cheer to financial blackholes, Nic takes us through this week's political trauma in Germany after a court ruling created a €60 billion gap in the government annual budget. We discuss how politicians managed to make such a massive error, and why Germany decided a policy of austerity should be enshrined in the constitution. We finish on the topic of books as Simon discusses public bookshelves on the streets of Germany, why The Famous Five shouldn't be considered a classic, and how free books can boost your language skills. GRAHAM WARD ON RICHARD CARPENTER First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 12th 2023 This week, we welcome GRAHAM WARD, yet another new voice to the ever expanding list of contributors to the VISION ON SOUND pool of talent, and, whilst we do start off today with my usual introductory interrogation about his own fascinating earliest television memories and so forth, we very swiftly move onto the topic that he primarily wanted to talk very fondly about, which is the television screenwriting career of RICHARD CARPENTER, who, after a brief career as a jobbing actor in the 1960s, is possibly best known to the general public these days for his work on HTVs stunning ROBIN OF SHERWOOD. That particularly high profile 1980s hit still appears regularly on the daytime ITV channels, but, of course, fans of his work will also remember such delights as CATWEAZLE, THE GHOSTS OF MOTLEY HALL, THE ADVENTURES OF DICK TURPIN, a large contribution to THE ADVENTURES OF BLACK BEAUTY, and THE FAMOUS FIVE, and the swashbuckling adventures of SMUGGLER and ADVENTURER, and he could very much stake a claim for having reimagined the children's historical adventure series, most often on the ITV channels, for more than one generation. RICHARD CARPENTER sadly passed away in 2012, but leaves behind him a huge legacy of television work which, whilst remaining much loved by generations of Archive TV fans like the people who listen to this show, is still being discovered by new generations of fans even today. On this day in legal history in 1929, the Privy Council of the United Kingdom declared women officially “persons” under the laws of Canada. Which is good, that's a good thing to do, generally. People should be persons. On October 18, 1929, a landmark decision by the Privy Council of the United Kingdom fundamentally altered the legal status of women in Canada. On this day, the Privy Council overturned a ruling made by the Supreme Court of Canada in the case of Edwards v. Canada. The case was initiated by Emily Murphy, the first female magistrate in the British Empire, and four other women—Henrietta Muir Edwards, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Nellie McClung—who collectively came to be known as the Famous Five. A lawyer had challenged Murphy's right to preside over a court on the grounds that she wasn't a "person" under Canadian law, leading the Famous Five to challenge this narrow interpretation of the term "persons" as outlined in the British North America Acts, the governing laws of Canada at the time. The Supreme Court of Canada initially ruled against the Famous Five, upholding the traditional interpretation that excluded women from the definition of "persons." This decision mirrored societal prejudices that marginalized women, relegating them to domestic roles and barring them from public life. However, the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, which served as Canada's final court of appeal at the time, reversed this ruling. They declared that the exclusion of women from public offices was a "relic of days more barbarous than ours," offering a more progressive and inclusive interpretation.Lord Sankey, who delivered the Privy Council's judgment, questioned why the term "persons" should not include women, framing it as a matter of logical and moral imperative. This decision dramatically expanded the range of professional and public opportunities available to women in Canada and had ripple effects across the globe, inspiring movements for gender equality.Today, October 18 is celebrated as Persons Day in Canada, marking the victory of the Famous Five and commemorating the broader fight for gender equality. The decision serves as an enduring reminder for legal scholars, activists, and students about the power of the legal system to redefine societal norms and advance human rights. The issue of the state-and-local tax (SALT) deduction cap, instituted by the GOP in 2017, is becoming a contentious point in the upcoming elections, particularly for blue-state Republicans. The cap limited the SALT deduction to $10,000 and was initially opposed by several House Republicans from high-tax states. Although many of those opposing Republicans are no longer in office, a new batch of lawmakers from blue states is fighting to restore the full SALT deduction, albeit without success so far. This situation is giving Democrats an advantage, as candidates vow to make the removal of the SALT cap a priority if elected.Democrats' message that Republicans are responsible for a tax hike has resonated in previous elections and appears to be effective again. Republican representatives such as Mike Garcia of California have admitted that winning would be easier if their party agreed to lift the cap. The upcoming elections are critical for future tax policy discussions, as many elements of the 2017 tax law, including the SALT cap, are set to expire in 2025.By way of brief background, the SALT cap deduction refers to the limitation placed on the amount of state and local taxes (SALT) that can be deducted from a filer's federal income tax. Implemented as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the cap is currently set at $10,000 for both single filers and married couples filing jointly. The SALT cap has been a point of debate, as it disproportionately affects taxpayers in states with higher income and property taxes–those states where more folks are likely to be exceeding $10,000 in property tax.Democrats have successfully used the SALT issue to gain an edge in previous elections, unseating Republicans who opposed the 2017 tax law due to the cap. Some candidates have characterized the 2017 law as a "weaponization of the tax code" against Democratic states. However, it's worth noting that not all Democrats are united in removing the cap. Progressive Democrats argue that the SALT deduction disproportionately benefits the wealthy and have resisted attempts to eliminate it from the Build Back Better legislation.Even as some Republican candidates try to align their party's stance with raising or eliminating the SALT cap, they face internal resistance. The issue has even stalled GOP efforts to pass tax bills, as some refuse to vote for any package that doesn't address the SALT cap. As it stands, the SALT cap issue remains a potent weapon for Democrats, particularly in high-tax states, and could significantly influence the electoral outcomes in the 2024 elections.SALT Cap Haunts GOP House Candidates as Democrats Turn TablesThe Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has notably excluded environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing from its focus areas for 2024, a shift from previous years when it was listed as a priority. The agency's Division of Examinations priorities for the year did not make any direct mention of ESG, even though the topic was a key area of scrutiny in reports for 2021, 2022, and 2023. An SEC spokesperson clarified that the published priorities for 2024 are "not exhaustive" and other issues could still be addressed. This change comes as the SEC seems to be distancing itself from the ESG label in the context of corporate disclosures. An agency official mentioned that the commission is focusing more on "emergent risks" rather than using the ESG terminology. The label itself has come under scrutiny and has been politicized, leading companies like BlackRock and McDonald's to drop or downplay the term. For 2024, the SEC has shifted its focus to anti-money laundering controls, cryptocurrency, and cybersecurity. Despite this shift, it's worth noting that the SEC's Climate and ESG Task Force has been active in enforcement, settling cases with Goldman Sachs, Bank of New York Mellon, and Deutsche Bank over allegations of improper ESG investment claims and procedural failures. The SEC's deprioritizing of ESG in its 2024 exam priorities does not necessarily signal an abandonment of oversight in this area but indicates a shift in the regulatory landscape.SEC Drops ESG From List of Compliance Priorities in 2024Google has requested a California federal court to dismiss a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging that the tech giant's data scraping activities for training its AI systems violate people's privacy and property rights. The company argues that using public data is essential for training AI technologies like its chatbot Bard. Google contends that the lawsuit could significantly harm not just its services but also the development of generative AI as a whole. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco by eight unnamed individuals, accuses Google of improperly using content from social media and other Google platforms for AI training. The suit is part of a broader trend of legal complaints against tech companies for allegedly misusing various types of content, such as books, visual art, and personal data, for AI training without permission. Google's general counsel, Halimah DeLaine Prado, dismissed the lawsuit as "baseless," stating that U.S. law permits the use of public information to create new beneficial uses. She also refuted allegations that the company uses non-public information from services like Gmail for AI training without consent. The lawsuit covers a wide array of content, from photos on dating websites to Spotify playlists and TikTok videos. One plaintiff, described as a best-selling author and investigative journalist, claimed Google copied her book to train its chatbot. Google responded that such use falls under the fair use doctrine of copyright law and criticized the lawsuit for lacking specific details on how the plaintiffs were harmed.Google says data-scraping lawsuit would take 'sledgehammer' to generative AI | ReutersIn the ongoing fraud trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, defense lawyers are challenging the portrayal of the company's investments as "reckless and frivolous." This comes after testimony from Nishad Singh, FTX's former engineering chief, who described the company's spending on marketing and celebrity endorsements as excessive. Singh, who has pleaded guilty to fraud and is cooperating with prosecutors, testified that he thought FTX could survive despite a $13 billion shortfall in customer funds, a point that could support Bankman-Fried's defense.Bankman-Fried is in his third trial week, facing charges related to allegedly looting billions from FTX customer funds for various investments and political donations. He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mark Cohen, pressed Singh on the business benefits of marketing expenditures, potentially framing them as good-faith business decisions rather than fraud.Singh also testified about a deal FTX had with investment firm K5, which he had previously described as "toxic" for the company's culture. Cohen pointed out that K5 helped with more than just celebrity endorsements; it also assisted in investing in a tequila brand run by a celebrity. A lawsuit against K5 alleges that a Bankman-Fried-controlled company used $214 million in FTX funds to buy a stake in celebrity Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila brand, valued at just $2.94 million at the time.Bankman-Fried's defense maintains that while he made mistakes in running FTX, he never intended to defraud anyone. Jurors have also heard from other former executives who have pleaded guilty to fraud and are cooperating with the prosecution. One significant point came when Singh acknowledged buying a $3.7 million home using FTX customer funds, stating he was "ashamed" and had agreed to forfeit the property as part of his plea agreement.Sam Bankman-Fried's lawyer says FTX investments were not 'reckless' | ReutersA California state judge has ruled that the $90 million legal dispute between Elon Musk and law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz should go to arbitration rather than be settled in court. Judge Richard Ulmer agreed with Wachtell's argument that both parties had "clearly and unmistakably" agreed to let an arbitrator decide on the claims subject to arbitration. Elon Musk, who renamed Twitter to X after acquiring it, had filed a lawsuit against Wachtell to recover $90 million in fees, accusing the law firm of receiving an "improper bonus payment" that violated its fiduciary and ethical duties. The judge's decision to compel arbitration was made without objection from either party, and the merits of Musk's claims were not addressed in this ruling. Wachtell, which represented Twitter in the acquisition deal, has denied Musk's allegations. A spokesperson for Wachtell declined to comment on the ruling, and attorneys for Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In the lawsuit, Musk claimed that Twitter executives "ran up the tab" by designating large amounts of money as "success" or "project" fees for law firms involved in the deal. Musk argued that Wachtell unfairly profited from the transaction. In response, Wachtell stated that Twitter's board had approved their fee, arguing that they had facilitated a deal ensuring "billions in value for Twitter's stockholders." The case is known as X Corp v Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in the San Francisco Superior Court.Elon Musk's Twitter fee fight with law firm Wachtell belongs in arbitration, judge says | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Why is Yr. Obt. Svt. not part of this podcast? Aren't you glad I'm not?The Culture Clash series has – from the feedback we've heard – been well received. Thus far it's been Americans talking to our comrades in performance management arms about their experience in their home country and in North America. What we've not had is someone from another country talking to his countrymen. This podcast deviates from that model because my Objectively Younger, Taller, Smarter and Subjectively Better Looking Brother From Other Parents is from India and is speaking with two of his Indian friends, Kishore Mukkamala and Sumit Deo. It was – and this was quite difficult for someone who has figuratively kissed the Blarney Stone – my idea to redact myself and Natalie and Tim from the podcast as we simply don't have the background to do justice to this episode, thus, Celvin as the host. One of the things that makes this such an interesting episode is that Celvin really understands the immigrants journey – all three of them have had very different experiences and yet all three have had ones that are awfully close. Because of this, I think you, oh Gentle Listener, will find nuance and understanding in this episode that may very well be unique. They came for opportunity. They left for family. One of the things that I found so interesting about this podcast (your hosts and our guests listen to all of our episodes before they go live, the former for OMG-is-this-any-good and the latter for OMG-am-I-going-to-get-fired-over-this-content) is the effort and challenges Sumit and Kishore underwent as they came to the States and built a life only to return to their homeland. Their reasons differ slightly but commonly share the threads of family ties and duty. One cannot but admire their undoubtedly hard (have a listen to what they had to go through to get into this country and work here – it ain't easy) decisions, for this is what real men (and women but c'mon, they are quite literally guys) willingly sacrifice for their families.Their paths here (and I include Celvin) are interesting, their careers varied, their love of Essbase similar. They are inspiring stories and (for once) I as a listener was quite moved. I am sorry they left the States as I would very much like to meet them in person. A couple of key things to listen for: guns, sports (American sports), movies (Hollywood is more accurate than one might imagine), personal space, Americans' openness and friendliness, and just where are the servants. A world united by Enid BlytonAt the end of every episode we (well, Celvin this time) ask our guests who in history they'd like to have dinner with, what they like to read, and the movies that they like in an attempt to know the real person.I am as a native born American, somewhat taken aback by the well-read nature of our guests in this series. Kishore and Sumit are from their answers, people whose interests go far beyond just work and sports (I fear I do a disservice to my fellow Americans but let's be real: how many philosophers does your average USAian list in his I'd-like-to-have-dinner-with-this-person) . But most importantly, how many Americans are fans of the Famous Five? Hah! I am. Well, I think the Secret Seven were better, but the Famous Five are just fine as well. I'm not sure if listening to this podcast will convince you to dive into the really quite magical world of Enid Blyton, but if you have children, I urge you to dip your to

Decades before her fellow members of the Famous Five began their women's rights work, Henrietta Edwards was setting up organizations and helping women gain a voice. We're kicking off 2023 with a bonus episode featuring Tunnels of Fear by Stephen Thraves with art by Terry Oakes. This was one of two fantasy gamebooks published by Hodder and Stoughton in the early 90s (along with a whole host of licensed gamebooks featuring characters like Asterix, The Famous Five, and Biggles). It originally came with a whole bunch of cardboard and plastic peripherals and a special pair of dice. My copy lacks one peripheral and both dice. Will this affect the success of this mission into a haunted mine? Yes. Yes it will. Also this month saw the release of a brand new zine called Sites Unzine featuring an experimental RPG by HJDoom. My lovely patrons at www.patreon.com/hjdoom have already had a copy of this game but if you'd like to support independent creators then you can take a look at issue one here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/420480/SITES-UNZINE-ISSUE-1

Lord Sugar, Gazza, Harry Redknapp, Jurgen Klinsmann and Sir Alex Ferguson…No, this is not the line up for a reality TV show but they are just some of the names that crop up in this week's pod as Darren Anderton sits down with Kammy and Ben. He explains why he rejected Manchester United in the mid-90s and how a cheeky request led to Lord Sugar telling him to get out of his house. He recalls getting words of encouragement from an unlikely source ahead of his England debut, being part of Tottenham's ‘Famous Five', and reveals who came up with Jurgen Klinsmann's dive celebration. He also relays what really went down on the infamous night of the Dentists Chair, tells what it was like being part of Euro 96 and reminisces over his role in Gazza's memorable goal against Scotland. He also talks honestly about his early struggles at Tottenham and how just badly the ‘Sicknote' label affected him mentally during his career. Meanwhile, Kammy recalls the day he surprised Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith before a game at Portsmouth and reveals which Premier League boss locked themselves in their office to avoid a grilling. If you want to ask Ben or Kammy a question, email kammyandben@bbc.co.uk.

This week we welcome onto the podcast performer, activist, and author Jill Nalder. In January 2021 Russell T Davies‘ It's a Sin hit our TV screens. For some, it was a reminder of the pain and prejudice of the AIDs crisis, while for many it was an education. Either way, it captured the hearts and minds of millions across the country. Jill Nalder, a lifelong friend of Russell, was the inspiration for the character of Jill Baxter (and even played Jill's mum in the show!). Now she has put her life and experiences into her own words in Love from the Pink Palace. The podcast is produced and presented by Jack Wrighton @jackwrighton and the team at Mostly Books. Kim's first novel Testament was published in 2018, and was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Award, shortlisted for the Best First Novel Award, and won the Bath Novel Award and the Harper's Bazaar Big Book of the Year. A James Bond fan since a young age, and described as a “Fleming aficionado of the highest order”. Tayo is The Five to Nine Traveller who believes life is more than your 9 to 5. As an adventuring enthusiast she is always on the hunt for adventure both local & global and loves to share her stories to inspire the same in you! She truly believes adventure is what you make it so you can find her hiking up some mountain or discovering the latest immersive cultural experience in the city. Tayo in her own words: My name is Tayo and I am just a regular gal with a job (oh the inconvenience) who exhibits off the scale delight when she travels and explores! I love travelling as it appeals to my inner childhood of being an explorer and finding something new in my surroundings, be it in the city I live or a new destination. As a child I was an avid reader of The Famous Five by Enid Blyton who were always on adventures and I was always exploring around the estate where I grew up. Travelling for me is a collection of interactions, memories and personal development, and tells me more about the world I live in. Some of my most vivid memories from travelling are moments I reflect on and smile, like seeing the gorgeous sunsets over Oxford city to meeting Frank in Cuba who kindly gave me a hat made of local leaves (which I still have to this day and use for fancy dress!) Blogging is my outlet to share my eclectic narratives and photos of the beautiful world I get to see, packed full of adventure! The main thing though is that I hope it inspires you to go out there and have an adventure even with your 9 to 5! Not all travels have to be in far flung exotic places (although that is fun too!) And who says who have to jack it all in to travel? That's what makes me The 5 to 9 Traveller! I developed a tool called The Famous Five (named by a client!) which is loosely based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The Famous Five is so important because at the core this is a tool to assist in regulating the nervous system and cultivating trust with your body. The Famous Five covers: Eating when you are hungry, resting when you are tired, drinking water when you are thirsty, moving every day, and using the bathroom when you notice (no more waiting as long as you can!) This is the number one tool I recommend to clients to learn how to get back into their body, build trust with themselves, and regulate their nervous system. You can find a free downloadable PDF in my bio on my Instagram @sherah.janell Currently, I offer a $99 single session (a $45 discount!) in which we focus in how this integration can change your life. You can sign up for sessions at sherahjanell.com
The Secrets We Share - A mesmerizing, twisty suspense novel perfect for fans of Mary Kubica and Riley Sager from an acclaimed author! Explore the deep bonds—and deadly secrets—between two very different sisters haunted by the crimes of their father murdered nearly twenty years earlier…At first glance, Natalie Cavanaugh and Glenn Abbott hardly look like sisters. Even off-duty, Natalie dresses like a Boston cop, preferring practical clothes and unfussy, pinned-up hair. Her younger sister, Glenn, seems tailor-made for the spotlight, from her signature red mane to her camera-ready smile. Glenn has spent years cultivating her brand through her baking blog, and with the publication of her new book, that hard work seems about to pay off. But her fans have no idea about the nightmare in Glenn and Natalie's past. Twenty years ago, their father's body was discovered in the woods behind their house. A trauma like that doesn't fit with Glenn's public image. Yet, maybe someone reading her blog does know something. There have been anonymous online messages, vague yet ominous, hinting that she's being watched. And with unsettling coincidences hitting ever closer to home, both Glenn and Natalie soon have more pressing matters to worry about, especially when a dead body is found in an abandoned building . . . Natalie is starting to wonder how much Glenn really knows about the people closest to her. But are there also secrets Natalie has yet to uncover about those she herself trusts? For two decades, she's believed their father was murdered by their neighbor, with whom he was having an affair. But if those events are connected to what's happening now, maybe there's much more that Natalie doesn't know. About their father. About their neighbors. About her friends. Maybe even about herself. But there are no secrets between sisters . . . are there?Edwin Hill is the author of LITTLE COMFORT, THE MISSING ONES and his latest Hester Thursby WATCH HER.
