On this episode, Marc talks with Angela Jaeger, author of “I Feel Famous: Punk Diaries 1977-1981,” released on February 4th, 2025. It's a compendium of her diary entries when she was a teenager living in New York and London, going to see punk bands at CBGB's, Max's, Tier 3, and many other places. Jaeger seemingly saw and met every band around, forging friendships with the Cramps, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, X-Ray Spex, the Raincoats, and the Clash, among many others. Her diary entries rush with the excitement of getting to see new music every night at a time when bands were seemingly forming every minute. As Jaeger writes, "When I see myself jumping back and forth between New York and London, going out all the time to see bands, joining bands, starting college, stopping college, etc, it leaves my head spinning. And yet I see the motivations behind my moves–wanting to figure out who I was on my own terms, not always pleasing my parents or even myself, but curious to grab the moment, tell the story here and now.”You can buy Jaeger's book here: https://hatandbeard.com/products/i-feel-famous-punk-diaries-1977-1981We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Angela Jaeger!

Today's guest is Celeste Bell, daughter of the one and only Poly Styrene, a woman who was an absolute punk icon. If you know that name, then you'll definitely know songs like Art-I-Ficial, Junk Food Junkie and Identity which Poly sang as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through her music Poly Styrene inspired the likes of Neneh Cherry, FKA Twigs and many more, but it wasn't just her music, it was her attitude. Sadly Poly passed in 2011 from breast cancer, but I reached out to her daughter Celeste after seeing the brilliant documentary she directed, entitled Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche. In this episode Celeste shares on her mother's mental health - and how being misdiagnosed made things worse - as well as the things that made Poly happy, such as makeup, dressing up, reading magazines and enjoying a spa day. Celeste also shares her own experiences of motherhood, which inevitably draw comparisons with how she was raised by a mother who was often overwhelmed by life. By the way, right near the end Celeste shares a hilarious story about women in punk, so be sure to keep listening! TW: themes of religion, cults, mental health. By the way, look out for my video on Poly, especially if this is the first time you're learning about her. I'd love to know what you thought of this one, so if you're listening on Spotify be sure to drop a comment, as I can actually respond now! We're back on the albums again! Part Fourteen, 170-161. This week features Ms. Aretha Franklin (again), Oasis, X-Ray Spex and seven other artists to continue this massive undertaking. Hmm, who else could there be? ;) - There are some conflicting feelings that may come to you as you consider these 10 albums. That was definitely my experience. It left me asking, more than once, the age-old question: Can you separate the art from the artist? - Production Note: No cut offs this time! Hooray!! If you're still smarting from last week's album ep getting cut off at the end (like I am), go and listen to this past Monday's show (Fireside Chat) for an explanation and some related remarks. I purposely let go of Poetry Time again today; no worries, I always choose one as a part of the structure of the show and I like this one for its symbolism and brevity: ____________________________________ Artichoke O heart weighed down by so many wings by Joseph Hutchison ____________________________________ - Oh it's a major endeavor, alright. I'm going to try to listen to at least 10 albums a week for the rest of the year! Yeah, I'm not joking. Media, art, and entertainment publication Paste Magazine came out with a list of the 300 best albums and we're going to go through them all! Well, I'm going to. And then we're going to talk about it! Great tracks, themes, history, info, related artists, cultural context, personal experiences- they're all going to play a part in these reviews. Totally stoked because I love music. (And a little intimidated! Because this is a lot to process) - If we keep up with an episode per week featuring 10 albums each, we'll just about finish by the end of 2024. We're doing this! Yay!! Thrilled you're along for the ride. I'll see you Monday, C

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we have guest David Newton from the Mighty Lemon Drops. A pivotal moment for David happened when he was just a schoolboy and went on a field trip to the Rock Against racism concert in London's Victoria Park. Over 100,000 people were there to protest the rising number of racial attacks that were occurring in the United Kingdom -as well as to see bands like The Clash, Steel Pulse, and X-Ray Spex. This moment not only raised his awareness of political issues, it began a lifelong love of music and inspired him to form his own band.   Musical credits: "Gymnopedies 2" by Blue Dot Sessions "Crime and Corruption" from The Lowest Class Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! Their 1979 album, 'Beat Rhythm News,' stood out. After a long hiatus, Essential Logic returned in 2022 with 'Land of Kali.' Essential Logic are an English post-punk band formed in 1978 by saxophonist Lora Logic after leaving X-Ray Spex. The band initially consisted of Lora on vocals, Phil Legg on guitar and vocals, William Bennett (later of Whitehouse) on guitar, Mark Turner on bass guitar, Rich Tea (Richard Thompson) on drums and Dave Wright on saxophone. Turner was later replaced by Sean Oliver (later of Rip, Rig & Panic) on bass. The band split in 1981 and reformed in 2001.

Once upon a time in England, a teenager named Susan Murphy brought her saxophone to audition for a new punk band called X-Ray Spex- a group that was not looking for a sax player. Despite that fact, she made the cut, and like her fellow new band mates, she adopted a stage name: Lora Logic was born. When her tenure with the band was unexpectedly cut short, a friend with a studio encouraged her to forge her own path, and in 1979 the underground scene was introduced to her next project Essential Logic- a groove-laden and experimental sort of progressive punk rock. Somewhere along the way she became a Krishna devotee and let her music career take a back seat, re-emerging on occasion with a new set of songs. Nearly 50 years after it all began, Essential Logic is back with a new album called “Land of Kali,” and a box set called “Logically Yours.” Dylan Shearer co-hosted this episode, and we spoke with Lora at length about everything- how it all began, how things have changed, her nuanced collaborative relationship with X-Ray Spex vocalist Poly Styrene, why she plays the sax, her travels to India, and collaborating with her daughter on the latest iteration of Essential Logic. Lora also shares a favorite vegetarian recipe.

"Natural Magick" Formed in the mid '90s in London, Kula Shaker emerged as one of the most dynamic and engaging musical acts around. Mixing psychedelia with traditional Indian music and pop, Kula Shaker tore it up right out of the gate, with their debut album K hitting #1 and making them immediate superstars. Over the course of their career they played Glastonbury, T in the Park, the V Festival, and they supported Oasis at their legendary Knebworth shows. Singer Crispian Mills is the grandson of the Academy Award Winning actor Sir John Mills and the son of director Roy Boulting and actress Hayley Mills, who you might remember from the 1961 film The Parent Trap. Mills got into ancient Sanskrit texts as a young man and carried their wisdom into his adulthood. He also got into psych music as well as The Doors. He's played with X-Ray Spex and appeared on the Prodigy's The Fat Of The Land album and when Kula Shaker were on hiatus, he played in a band called The Jeevas. Also, he's a writer and director; he wrote and helmed the Simon Pegg film A Fantastic Fear Of Everything and has other projects in the works. With Kula Shaker he's put out six marvelous albums, including K, Pilgrim's Progress, 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Hugs and their brand new one, Natural Magick. A riveting return to form, Natural Magick finds the original Kula Shaker lineup reunited and the results are stunning--this album is an energetic blast of psych pop redolent with rich hooks, textured instrumentation and melodies galore. The government is today unveiling the first ever national Kinship Care strategy, aiming to bring more awareness and more money to family members looking after children that aren't theirs. Kinship care is when a child lives full time, or most of the time, with a relative, be it grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, or someone in the wider family network, because their own parents can't care for them. Anita talks to David Johnston, the Under Secretary of State for Children, Families and Wellbeing at the Department of Education about the new strategy.Shane MacGowan, the legendary songwriter and frontman with The Pogues, died on 30th November. As the classic Christmas anthem Fairy Tale of New York reaches number one in Ireland, Anita speaks to his widow, Victoria Mary Clarke about their life together, his music, his addictions and his legacy. It has been a year and a half since Roe vs Wade was overturned in the United States, ending the constitutional nationwide right to abortion for millions of women. It remains an issue that divides opinion. Anita talks to the British writer Nazrin Choudhury, the director of a new short film on the subject; 'Red White and Blue,' follows the character Rachel Johnson, a single mother in a precarious financial position, who is forced to cross state lines from Arkansas in search of an abortion. Musician Lora Logic was the woman behind the iconic saxophone that was a part of the British Punk-Rock band X-Ray Spex. After almost 30 years, the band are re-releasing their second album, Conscious Consumer. Lora joins Anita to talk about the album, what she's up to now and what lead singer Poly Styrene would have thought of the re-release.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt Studio manager: Sue Maillot

Today's episode is about "Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche", a 2021 doc about the British punk legend and X-Ray Spex leader, directed by Celeste Bell and Paul Sng. The movie was selected by our guests, Sweeping Promises. Check out their outstanding new album Good Living Is Coming for You. Poly Styrene, born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, was the child of a Scottish-Irish mother and a Somali father. Celeste Bell, her daughter, narrates and appears in the film in addition to being its co-director. It's a very personal examination of Poly's life and career as Celeste deals with the aftermath of Poly's 2011 death from cancer. We learn about Poly's challenging youth as a mixed-race child in postwar Britain, her explosion as a teenage icon in the early British punk scene, and the mental health issues that arose as she encountered New York for the first time. If you're looking for a movie where John Lydon and Sid Vicious come off as good guys, this is not the film for you. Poly went through several hospitalizations, became a Hare Krishna, lost custody of and later reunited with Celeste, and continued to pursue her artistic ambitions through it all. It's a beautiful movie and it will hopefully continue to bring more attention to Poly Styrene's life and work. Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard, but Pop Screen says: welcome to our episode on Poly Styrene: I am a Cliche! Co-directed by Celeste Bell in collaboration with Paul Sng, it follows Bell's journey to explore her late mother's iconic time with the punk band X-Ray Spex, as well as her troubled life and - more important than it sounds, this - her one-of-a-kind fashion sense. The documentary is based closely on the book Day-Glo, by Bell and Zoe Howe, and on this episode We Are Cult's Mark Cunliffe joins Graham to discuss what was left out from that text, as well as appreciate Poly Styrene's classic work with X-Ray Spex, her distance from the mainstream British punk scene, the afterlife of her band and her still-underrated solo career. We also pitch an ITV1 detective series starring Kate Bush, although we're still unsure why. It was released in 1997 and features their signature blend of garage rock and punk influences. The album received critical acclaim and helped solidify The Hellacopters' reputation as a prominent rock band in the 90s. If you have any specific questions or need more information about the album, feel free to ask! 7. "Mink DeVille: Cabretta" is the debut album by the American rock band Mink DeVille, led by singer-songwriter Willy DeVille. It was released in 1977 and received widespread praise for its unique blend of punk, rock, and R&B influences. The album includes some of their well-known songs like "Spanish Stroll" and "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl." If you have any more questions or need further details about the album or the band, feel free to ask! 8. “X-Ray Spex: Germfree Adolescents." It is the debut album by the British punk rock band X-Ray Spex, released in 1978. The album is known for its energetic punk sound and the distinctive vocals of lead singer Poly Styrene. "Germfree Adolescents" is considered a classic in the punk genre and includes notable tracks like "The Day the World Turned Dayglo" and "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" If you have any more questions or need further information about the album or the band, feel free to ask! 9. Chesterfield Kings: Let's Go Get Stoned Early period Stones were the most obvious touchstone, particularly singer Greg Provost's obvious Jaggerisms, but they went all in on 1994's Let's Go Get Stoned. From the cover art & title to the appearance of a few Stones covers (and Stones-endorsed blues covers) amidst the rollicking originals, this is a great lost circa-1965 Rolling Stones platter, turbocharged with a clear debt to the Stooges and New York Dolls as well. Is it great? Well, if you like '65 Stones with a touch of the Stooges and the New York Dolls, then, yeah, it's great. (And if you don't... oy, what are we gonna do? Sadly, it doesn't stream, and I don't know if it's available anywhere, but the whole thing is ripped to YouTube. So check it out. 10. 11. PP Arnold, whose real name is Patricia Ann Cole, is often referred to as "The First Lady of Immediate." She gained recognition in the 1960s as a prominent vocalist for the Immediate Records label. PP Arnold is known for her soulful and powerful voice, and she worked with renowned artists like The Rolling Stones and Small Faces during her career. These albums have made a significant impact on their respective genres and are considered essential listens for any music enthusiast. We're signing off Season 9 with a pioneering legend. Here's what the incomparable Vivien Goldman wrote about Lora Logic back in the nascent days of punk: “The remarkable Lora Logic, several phases ahead as usual, proves yet again that she's the best thing that ever played in the Roxy…The woman defines herself, un-pompously fills a cultural vacuum. If there is a modern dance, she's our Ginger Rogers.”I was listening to Lora's back catalogue and I started to think that those cultural vacuums that Vivien wrote about could be those that appear when one movement fades, but the next movement hasn't yet formed and doesn't have a genre…that exciting, experimental phase – bands like X-Ray-Spex, ESG, Bush Tetras and Lora's own post-X-Ray-Spex band, Essential Logic, were the ones that were always pushing boundaries, doing things a bit differently, never standing still. Her latest album, Land of Kali, released towards the end of last year, is a wonderful odyssey that takes us through the mirror of our own lives into the dangerous and dystopian age of Kali Yuga, ultimately emerging with positivity and hope. There are some people who, through their art, their music or just their whole being, make you feel that, whatever happens to us, things are going to be ok. https://www.heysunday.co/i-wanna-jump-like-dee-deeI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. This episode features singer and saxophonist Lora Logic and it's a wild story. It actually begins with her mother's escape from her rural Finnish farm upbringing. It shaped how she raised Lora. But it was that farm where Lora felt most happy. She talks about going through several instruments before she fell in love with the sax. And then there's her creepy sax teacher who made her really uncomfortable but pushed her into busking and improvising. She joined X-Ray Spex but was canned before the first album was released.  She released the first Essential Logic single and that is QUITE a story! After living the rock and roll lifestyle, having an epileptic fit, and having an out of body experience, she left music completely. Well, not exactly. She DID perform with the band Juggernaut after becoming a Hare Krishna.  Her return to music has been one of reformation. Initially with X-Ray Spex and then Essential Logic. She's released a box set of EVERYTHING she's ever done! You can't get more comprehensive than that. She's also released a wonderful new Essential Logic album called Land Of Kali. The band pushes the boundaries of traditional rock and punk music, blending it with exotic elements to create a fierce and unparalleled version of Tibetan Spy Music. Many worlds converge into the sound of The Swords of Fatima: Bollywood, belly dance, flamenco, punk, surf, garage, country, and dark psyche folk. Some say that they are the only band to play multiple genres in every song. Some call them Tibetan Spy Music. Some try to compare them to something more familiar like Siouxsie and the Banshees, X-Ray Spex, or Dick Dale. Front woman, Buko Pan Guerra, guitarist and singer, previously known as the "Bad Ass Bitch with a Banjo" (coined by Sean Carnage) and as Lady Simmons when she played bass for Lily and the Ladies.  Still attached to her banjo (her best friend for many years), plays her guitar in a banjo-styled tuning. She is fascinated by ancient stories and music from her heritage: Filipino, Turkish, Armenian, Spanish, Malaysian, and Indian. Her main influences for writing music are ancient folktales, caravans in the desert, sails sailing across the sea, Arabian nights, shamans, kundalini text, her grandmother (who is a faith healer), Samurai films, and classical music. Kim Fredrick of Punk Globe says “Buko sounds as though she has twelve hands when she plays.” Nick Scott is the architect behind the drums. Nick has many years developing his craft behind the set with POPDeFECT and Project K. Since forming in 2007, they have crafted the sound of Southeast Asian Disco Surf Punk madness that the band has become today.ArTEEtude is a podcast created and produced by Detlef Schlich that explores the intersection of art, digital culture, and true stories in West Cork. Forged within the punk youthquake in 1977, The Raincoats are one of my favourite bands. I'm not alone in my love of them. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was famously a fan. Sonic Youth too. Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel. But here's John Lydon to articulate the brilliance of the band perfectly. "The Raincoats,” says John, “offered a completely different way of doing things, as did X-Ray Spex, and all the books about punk have failed to realise that these women were involved for no other reason than that they were good and original". Yeah, that'll do.Now, on February 24th, bass player Gina Birch releases her first solo album, I Play My Bass Loud, on Jack White's Third Man Records. She disputes that first point to a degree, but it's certainly her debut release under just her name. I'll let her explain. What took her so long? Celeste Bell's mother Poly Styrene was a punk icon who'd made her mark on music history before Celeste was even born. Her distinctive voice, neon outfits and mixed race heritage made her stand out in a punk scene that was dominated by white men, clad in dark colours and studs. Celeste tells Anu Anand about Poly Styrene's rise to fame with her band X-Ray Spex, why it all fell apart and what it was like to sing with her onstage before she died in 2011. Celeste has made a film about her mum called I am a Cliche.
