What if grief could actually help us do better humanitarian work? In this episode of The Better Samaritan Podcast, Dr. Jamie Aten and Kent Annan explore the idea of lament—or as Jamie calls it, “faithful grief”—and how it can reshape how we approach global challenges and humanitarian aid. Drawing from Kent's book Slow Kingdom Coming, personal stories, and research with Biola and the University of Connecticut, they break down how lament isn't just about sadness—it's about being honest with God through complaint, praise, and asking for help. They also share powerful moments from places like post-earthquake Haiti and the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where leaders model resilience and generosity in the face of scarcity. This episode offers a fresh take on grief, healing, and hope—and how small, faithful actions can lead to significant change in a hurting world. Jamie and Kent conclude with a preview of upcoming conversations on TBS with leaders in different humanitarian sectors, who will be discussing how federal and foreign aid cuts are impacting their area of focus and what may be next. The Ferment Podcast - Conversations About Worship And Transformation
It's season FIVE of The Ferment Podcast, and our friend David Ruis is back to kick it off with a conversation about communal discernment of prophetic words! He and Adam talk about how and why the Lord speaks in a community, the process of discerning the timing and meaning of words, and some lessons they've learned the hard way. David and Anita Ruis have lead, encourage, and empowered the Vineyard in Canada as the National Directors since 2014. David is a well-respected worship leader and songwriter (You're Worthy Of My Praise, Every Move I Make) and has also authored two books: The Worship God Is Seeking and The Justice God Is Seeking. Most recently, he is a contributing songwriter on Vineyard Worship's highly anticipated album “This Joy”, releasing summer 2023! As a team David and Anita are also known to be effective church planters and seasoned pastors, having established churches in Canada and the US. David has also been instrumental in seeing Vineyard communities established in Nepal and India. Much of the Ruises' focus has been in indigenous settings, working with people experiencing poverty and subsequent marginalization. They also have significant experience facilitating leadership development and on the creative side David is known for fostering originality in song-writing and the arts in various cultural settings. A burning passion for the Ruises is both practical and theological integration of creative worship in church community, and deep life engagement with issues of poverty and social injustice. The Ruises currently reside in Kelowna, BC. In their down time they love to be creative and hang with their grandkids. Wendy Thiessen, the Canadian director of PiFò Haiti, has a passion for speaking truth and advocating for how we can help others without the unintended consequence of harming the families, economy, and community we are assisting. She is a very strong advocate for being relational and asking, “what can we do for you”, rather than being churches and individuals collecting clothing, shoes, and toys because it feels good and it's what we “think” they need. PiFò Haiti's programs are completely run by the community in which they serve. In response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti an organization known as Haiti Christian Schools (HCS) partnered together with 4 schools to provide affordable education to a small community on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti. In 2014, with the understanding that moving from emergency relief to recovery is important, the organization began to focus on creating longer-term, locally led initiatives. In 2020 HCS became PiFò Haiti. PiFò is a Haitian Créole word meaning “Stronger”. Thanks to God's amazing provision and the generosity of our supporters, the organization had become just that, stronger. This is also the year we began working with GCF, God was strengthening the organization both in Haiti and in North America. Our programs have grown beyond education. Our prayer since we began in 2011 has been a consistent food program at each of our partner schools. It is a very costly initiative, but 10 years later we are beyond excited, our prayers have been answered. Thanks to the support of Trinity Hope an organization based in the United States who use local labour and supplies to provide affordable food programs all over Haiti. We currently have food programs in all our schools, 5 teachers will be graduating from teachers college this year, we are able to provide food and medical funds for vulnerable community members, and we are strengthening an agriculture project that will provide jobs and food for a community in the mountains. None of this would be possible without God's grace and the strong relationships we have with the locals in the community. with guest David Witt of iTeams. When you hear the words ‘community development', what comes to mind? International or local? Urban or rural? While many people might default to thinking of a tiny international village, there's plenty of community development work that needs to happen right here in Canada too. In this episode, Dave Witt from iTeams, offers insight into what it means to work with those on the margins in urban centers in Canada. Dave shares moving anecdotes from real communities banding together and reminds us of the importance of recognizing that everybody has a story that leads them to where they are today, no matter their circumstances. Lead Pastor Jack Moraine continues the series "Unlikely King" with the message "Slow Kingdom Coming."
We can be part of the slow process of God’s Kingdom coming to earth when we are intentional about who we follow, who we are with, and love others as we do ourselves.
From the time the seed of the Kingdom is planted to when the fruits are seen there is 'the meantime'. How do we hang on in that tension? In that radicle middle? We keep hoping, we keep praying, we keep waiting. And We keep looking at what God is doing in the meantime. It is a slow Kingdom coming, but it's coming. And just like yeast acting on dough making it rise, we can see things around us change, pointing to so much that is coming when the Kingdom of God is fully here.

Matthew 23:1-12: The parable of the ten bridesmaids reminds us that the Church still waits for the fulfillment of God's kingdom. How shall we wait? The oil points to practices that no one else can do for us that help us prepare for the long haul, the "slow kingdom coming." These practices add up to "Keep awake." At First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, we also know that the best way to wait is to serve in Christ's name.
