This week we're starting our Advent series, Those Who Dream, with Pastor Holly Walton bringing us a message out of Mark 13:32-37 titled: Keep Awake. In this first message of our Advent series, we're reminded that Advent invites us to live awake to God's presence, just as the dreamers of Scripture did. Holly challenges us to resist spiritual drowsiness and instead notice God at work in ourselves, in others, and in the world around us. As we stay awake to both the beauty and the brokenness of our world, God plants hope-dreams within us—dreams of peace, justice, and restored creation. This Advent, we're invited to wake up in order to dream with God and join in His redemptive work.

This week, our clergy encounter the Bible passage that has everyone so worried about the rapture! Peter Walsh, Elizabeth Garnsey, and John Kennedy discuss the shocking scenarios Jesus illustrates, explain how to keep awake and keep hope alive during trying times, and teach how to live as people of God's kingdom. Questions for Further Discussion:Themes and Application1. What does it mean to “live with the end in mind” without becoming fearful or fixated on predictions?2. One theme is living awake amid distraction, consumer culture, and sleepwalking through life. What are the most common “sleepwalkers” in your week—habits or forces that dull your spiritual awareness?3. Advent is portrayed as strength-building through hope → peace → joy → love. What spiritual “muscle” feels most in need of attention for you right now?Personal Reflection1. When you hear “keep awake,” what emotions come up first—comfort, pressure, curiosity, anxiety, resistance?2. The clergy discuss endings that arrive unexpectedly—death, loss, doors closing, sudden change. What “unexpected hour” have you lived through, and how did it shape you?3. John mentions the tension of embarrassment around future-oriented eschatology. Are there parts of Christian belief that you feel hesitant to talk about? Why?Broader Spiritual Considerations1. John brings in Augustine's idea that history is opaque—we can't read God's timetable through current events. What are the dangers of assuming our era is uniquely “the end,” and what are the dangers of ignoring real crisis?2. The podcast holds two truths together: the world is broken, and God keeps coming into it. How do you keep those both alive without collapsing into cynicism or denial?3. Advent begins by naming chaos, violence, and instability—and yet it's a season of hope. What does it mean spiritually to begin hopeful waiting in a world that feels unsteady?Learn more about St. Mark's at https://www.stmarksnewcanaan.orgWant to have your question or comment featured on the podcast? In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus calls men and women to follow him. This discipleship in which he calls them to, does not take place in a traditional classroom or student-teacher setting. This discipelship takes place in the "everyday" aspects of life: walking along the road, attending celebrations, and having conversations in the local water hole. We are called to the same life of faith...one that is ACTIVE. During this next season of our church, we desire to shift our discipleship into an active, purposeful endeavor. The wait is long for Christ's return, but we must remain diligent in our waiting. Being a disciple of Christ requires a long view.  Passage: Matthew 24:36-51 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience. We have our Sanctuary Service ("blended") at 9am. Our Online Service begins at 9:30am at pointlomachurch.org. And our Chapel Service ("modern") starts at 10:30am. Special Guest:Dr. Sarah Leer, practical theologian and youth workerQuestion of the Week: In many church contexts, youth are not empowered because they are deemed to need experience or maturity to be leaders. But regarding many justice issues, especially queer inclusion and affirmation, youth already have questions and have developed thoughts and ideas on what the church should be doing. But they may not be listened to or even asked, even when it comes to their own identity or experience. How do we change this paradigm and build truly inclusive and affirming communities of faith? Sarah's WebsiteFor Listening Guides, click here!Got a question for us? During the Advent season, we know that the darkness is thick and hope can wear thin while we wait for the arrival we long for. We tend to quickly shift from standing at the door watching on tip-toe to turning our backs and impatiently tapping our toes. So what are we to do? What might it look like to faithfully participate in this Advent waiting? I wonder if it might begin by remembering both God-with-us and God-within-us. What does that look like? Listen in. Sermon on Mark 13:24-37. This is the first sermon in our sermon series called Prepare the Way. Advent is a season of preparation, when we verbalize our longing for the world to be set right and remember the promise of God's anointed one. As we look toward the coming of Jesus, we prepare ourselves not only through buying gifts but also through sacred practices that point us toward the hope of Emmanuel, God with us. In this sermon, we explore how God shows up in amazing and unexpected ways.

Advent serves as a time of anticipation, alertness, and assurance as we look forward to the second coming of Jesus. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ we are called to keep awake and focus on our call to a holy life and prioritize eternal matters over worldly distractions. Consider these questions as you listen to this week's message: 1. Have you ever experienced a moment where you were caught unaware, perhaps like a last-minute request or obligation? How did that make you feel? 2. How does the concept of staying alert and being prepared, as discussed in the context of Jesus' return, differ from simply being ready so that you're not caught doing something wrong? 3. How do you reconcile the anxiety or apprehension often associated with anticipating Jesus' second coming with the assurance of God's sovereignty?
