This month's series comes from a book called When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor… and Yourself. It's a book about changing our whole mentality on missions, as we recognize the hurt we can do when we try to help in the wrong ways. We need to develop a new paradigm for missions - recognize that when we go into communities, we do not bring God with us. God is already there. Ephesians 3:14-21 fmhouston.com

Wendy Thiessen, the Canadian director of PiFò Haiti, has a passion for speaking truth and advocating for how we can help others without the unintended consequence of harming the families, economy, and community we are assisting. She is a very strong advocate for being relational and asking, “what can we do for you”, rather than being churches and individuals collecting clothing, shoes, and toys because it feels good and it's what we “think” they need. PiFò Haiti's programs are completely run by the community in which they serve. In response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti an organization known as Haiti Christian Schools (HCS) partnered together with 4 schools to provide affordable education to a small community on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti. In 2014, with the understanding that moving from emergency relief to recovery is important, the organization began to focus on creating longer-term, locally led initiatives. In 2020 HCS became PiFò Haiti. PiFò is a Haitian Créole word meaning “Stronger”. Thanks to God's amazing provision and the generosity of our supporters, the organization had become just that, stronger. This is also the year we began working with GCF, God was strengthening the organization both in Haiti and in North America. Our programs have grown beyond education. Our prayer since we began in 2011 has been a consistent food program at each of our partner schools. It is a very costly initiative, but 10 years later we are beyond excited, our prayers have been answered. Thanks to the support of Trinity Hope an organization based in the United States who use local labour and supplies to provide affordable food programs all over Haiti. We currently have food programs in all our schools, 5 teachers will be graduating from teachers college this year, we are able to provide food and medical funds for vulnerable community members, and we are strengthening an agriculture project that will provide jobs and food for a community in the mountains. None of this would be possible without God's grace and the strong relationships we have with the locals in the community. Resources:https://www.pifohaiti.org/https://gcfcanada.com/pifo-haiti/https://friendsgc.com/pifo-haiti/ Recommended books to read:"Slow Kingdom Coming, Practices for Doing Justice, Loving Mercy and WalkingHumbly in the World" by Kent Annan"When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor...andYourself" by Steve Corbett, Brian Fikkert

Well, 18 year old change maker from England, Lauren Roberts-Turner,  has indeed asked herself this question; she now researches and studies ways that we can lift people out of poverty while creating an economically empowered society.  I met Lauren in April when we spoke  at a conference called the 'Footsteps Aspire for Equality Global Gathering of Women'.  I literally was mind blown by the intelligent and articulate way she described an economic program, Universal Basic Income and how this can alleviate poverty and increase financial independence. The purpose of credit unions is obvious, isn't it? Well, isn't it?One of the perceptions about credit unions is that they ‘alleviate poverty' and I guess many within the Irish & UK credit union movement will accept that perception. I suspect that banks are not perceived as alleviating poverty, by the general public or even bank workers. So, do credit unions alleviate poverty?I spoke to three well known experienced credit union people; Paul Jones, Eileen Halligan & Des Morrisey and put this question to them. I started with Dr Paul A. Jones, Director of Research at CFCFE, who is also Reader in the Social Economy at Liverpool John Moores University, where he heads up the Research Unit for Financial Inclusion. I then spoke with Eileen Halligan, CEO & Secretary at Central Liverpool Credit Union.  A well established credit union with over 16,000 members with three branches. Finally, I got the views of Des Morrisey, the former, CEO of Tallaght Credit Union in Ireland. A 35 year old credit union with 17, 000 members, with over EU65m in assets.

Cash Flow Diary podcast guest Peter Harris wasn’t always part of University Venture Fund, a multi-million-dollar group that does what it can to thwart poverty from the ground up by helping individuals see their dreams through to fruition. In fact, Peter wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as an engineer. However, his father decided he didn’t like working the 9-to-5 life and became an entrepreneur. That took Peter to a whole new path in life. (And he still followed in his father's footsteps!) The great news is that Peter rocks as an entrepreneur who helps others to the same. Peter’s journey put him in the direct line of the impoverished. When that happened he vowed to find a way to use business to help them change their lives. Peter eventually learned how micro-franchising works so his group could offer that to individuals. This form of franchising can help the most financially challenged reach their dreams of business ownership. To make this happen for all those he wants to help, Peter had to learn a lot. He had to hit the re-start button on some of his personal business ventures, too. He refocused on the venture funding group and now helps students attain the capital they need to get where they want to go in life. Learn how Peter Harris solves problems for lots and lots of people every day. You’ll enjoy hearing about what it took to get him to the place he is now. As with a lot of entrepreneurial tales, the path wasn't laid out for him and it took a lot of dips and turns. Learn more.
