Four conservative Biola profs (Sean McDowell, Thaddeus Williams, Fred Sanders, Erik Thoennes) respond to the recent "drama" surrounding the questions Alisa Childers, Monique Duson and I have been raising. I appreciate these brothers and want you to hear their responses in their words. I also want you to understand what they DIDN'T say. Bombshells: Sean won't send kids to "center-left" Sociology department; Fred admits left-leaning hires; Thad says Biola "got crazy" 2014-2020 and is now reforming. At the end, I recount my 2021 meeting with top-level administration. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ3rPKlc2Zk #Biola #IsBiolaWoke
Money and marriage—two things God designed to bless us, but they can also be two of the greatest sources of stress. What if we turned financial conflict into connection?Dr. Shane Enete joins us today to share six creative ways couples can build stronger relationships by having intentional financial conversations—what he calls “money dates.”Dr. Shane Enete is an Associate Professor of Finance at Biola University and founded the Biola Center for Financial Planning. He is also the author of the book Whole Heart Finances: A Jesus-Centered Guide to Managing Your Money with Joy.Why You Need to Talk About Money—IntentionallyMany couples avoid conversations about money out of fear. A study of 2,000 couples found that half of them were uncomfortable discussing money because they worried it would lead to conflict. The irony is that by avoiding those talks, the conflict only deepens. On average, couples argue about money 58 times a year. But what if, instead of waiting for issues to flare up, you set aside regular time to talk about your finances together—proactively and prayerfully? That's the heart behind the idea of money dates. You might have to rip off the bandage at first, but we want to help couples make these conversations not just necessary—but enjoyable.Turning Financial Talks Into DatesThese aren't meant for finger-pointing but for course correction—a time to realign your financial goals with your values. But also, why not make it a date? Dating can be a lot of fun if you're intentional. So why not combine something enjoyable with something that's often uncomfortable? When you connect in a fun environment, even money talk becomes more meaningful. The key is consistency. Whether it's over dinner, coffee, or a quiet walk, having a regular rhythm of financial connection helps you stay on the same page as a couple—and deepens your trust.Money Date #1: Share Your Money StoryEvery person brings a financial backstory into marriage—habits, fears, and attitudes shaped by family and early experiences.Think of it as your money autobiography. Reflect on what you learned about money growing up, what messages you received from your parents, and how those experiences influence your decisions today.Take your spouse out for dinner and share those stories. You'll gain empathy and understanding for each other's perspectives. When you know your partner's money story, their spending or saving habits make a lot more sense.Try this: Ask each other, “What's your earliest memory of money?” The answers may surprise you—and bring you closer.Money Date #2: Give TogetherGenerosity is one of the most unifying acts a couple can experience. Here are a few ways to make generosity a shared journey:Set a giving goal. Track your progress as a family and celebrate milestones together.Join a giving circle. Partner with friends or your small group to pool resources for a cause you all care about.Create a stretch goal. As your income grows, commit to increasing your giving percentage over time. These conversations shift the focus from money as a source of stress to money as a means of Kingdom impact.Money Date #3: Cook the BooksThis one's both literal and figurative! Instead of going out, stay home and cook a meal together—or grab takeout for a picnic. Use the relaxed environment to talk about your budget rhythm:Who tracks expenses? What budgeting tools or apps will you use?How often will you review spending? The FaithFi app can help simplify this process. It lets couples track giving, spending, and saving all in one place—while keeping biblical wisdom at the center.Money Date #4: Check Your Credit (at the Spa!)Debt can carry emotional weight, so create a peaceful setting for this conversation. A spa day is perfect. It's relaxing—and you can often find affordable day passes. While you unwind, discuss:How much debt do you currently carry? How did your family handle debt growing up?What boundaries would you like to establish regarding credit use? This isn't about blame. It's about caring for each other and agreeing on a plan that both of you believe in.Money Date #5: Number Your DaysThis one takes its inspiration from Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”Couples should view estate planning as an act of love. When you prepare a will, name a guardian, or establish a power of attorney, you're doing something deeply selfless—caring for others even after you're gone.Spend a date identifying:Who will serve as executor or guardian for your children? How do you want your assets used to bless others? What legacy of faith and generosity do you want to leave behind?Growing Together Through Financial StewardshipMoney dates are about far more than numbers. They're about connection, empathy, and shared purpose. When couples talk about money in ways that honor God and each other, they grow in wisdom—and unity. When you come together around money with openness and grace, you draw closer not just to each other, but to the heart of God.———————————————————————————————————————Dr. Enete's full article, “Six Great Money Dates,” appears in the latest issue of Faithful Steward magazine—available to all FaithFi Partners. When you become a FaithFi Partner with a monthly gift of $35 (or $400 annually), you'll receive Faithful Steward magazine and other exclusive resources to help you grow as a faithful steward. I've managed to save about $42,000 in a separate account, but now I'd like to start investing that money for his future. I want something safe and low-risk—something that will be there for him when he needs it. In this conversation, Catholic apologist Trent Horn is here to discuss his video asking 50 Catholics their favorite argument for God. This was actually a response to my video where I asked 100 apologists their favorite arguments for God. However, today we're discussing why evangelicals and Catholics often approach apologetics differently. Whether you’re a skeptic or believer, this episode challenges how you think about the rational basis for faith. Is there room in the church for a "flexible inerrancy," in which the Gospel writers adapted and invented sayings of Jesus according to their theological interests? For example, is it within the bounds of inerrancy to conclude that Jesus never said the words, "I thirst," although that sentiment captures his goals? These questions are at the root of a big debate within the evangelical church. And today, we have Dr. Michael Licona and Dr. John West to discuss these issues and more. Without insulting one side or the other, please let us know what you think about the ISSUES and why. I recap my five year research project on Christian higher ed, particularly a case study on Biola University, and why I can't currently recommend them publicly.
JIM WILDER has been training leaders and counselors for over 27 years on five continents. He is the author of nine books with a strong focus on maturing and relationship skills for leaders. His coauthored book Living From the Heart Jesus Gave You has sold over 100,000 copies in eleven languages. Wilder has published numerous articles and developed four sets of video and relational leadership training called THRIVE. He is currently executive director of Shepherd's House Inc., a nonprofit working at the intersection of brain science and theology, and founder of Life Model Works that is buidling contagiously healthy Christian communities through equipping existing networks with the skills to thrive. Dr. Wilder has extensive clinical counseling experience and has served as a guest lecturer at Fuller Seminary, Biola, Talbot Seminary, Point Loma University, Montreat College, Tyndale Seminary and elsewhere.
What would it look like for revival to break out in the most restrictive places in the world? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Hormoz Shariat, a PhD in computer engineering, author of Iran’s Great Awakening, and the “Billy Graham of Iran.” Dr. Hormoz shares how he was born into Islam, lived through the Iranian Revolution, and still wrestled with questions of truth, injustice, and spiritual hunger until Christ radically changed his life. He talks about the incredible outreach to Muslims in Iran (and beyond) and why he believes Iran will someday become a "Christian nation." Today I have on apologist Mike Winger to explain why he pivoted his channel toward investigating abuse and false teaching in the church especially in settings where prophecy is practiced without accountability. He traces how “cover-up culture” forms, why some leaders stay silent, and how non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), intimidation, and platform protection can compound harm. He also lays out a biblical blueprint for dealing with credible accusations (1 Tim. 5:19–20) that protects the innocent, warns the flock, and seeks real reform not mobs or witch hunts. *Get a MASTERS IN APOLOGETICS or SCIENCE AND RELIGION at BIOLA (https://bit.ly/3LdNqKf) *USE Discount Code [SMDCERTDISC] for 25% off the BIOLA APOLOGETICS CERTIFICATE program (https://bit.ly/3AzfPFM) *See our fully online UNDERGRAD DEGREE in Bible, Theology, and Apologetics: (https://bit.ly/448STKK) FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Twitter: https://x.com/Sean_McDowell TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@sean_mcdowell?lang=en Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seanmcdowell/ Website: https://seanmcdowell.org Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
Today's podcast kicks off a new series, running through November 3rd, and concludes with Dr. Karl Lehman. This 6-week series focuses on identity, attachment, wounds, lament, and securing our attachment in Christ, not your marriage. In this episode of Neurodiverse Christian Couples, hosts Dan and Stephanie welcome back neurotheologian Dr. Jim Wilder for a deep dive into identity formation, attachment, and the brain, especially as it relates to neurodiverse individuals and marriages. Dr. Wilder explains how our identity develops from infancy through adolescence, highlighting key brain regions (like the orbital prefrontal cortex, corpus callosum, and mirror neuron system) and how they contribute to our sense of self and our ability to connect with others. He discusses what happens when these developmental processes are disrupted or different — as is often the case in autism, ADHD, and other developmental differences — and how this affects relationships, emotional regulation, and group belonging. The conversation explores: How attachment and caregiver attunement in infancy shape emotional identity. Why the adolescent brain shifts focus from Who am I? to Who are my people? — and how failing to find a “herd” can impact identity. The biological and neurological reasons why change (especially in neurodiverse individuals) takes time, encouragement, and community rather than just “trying harder.”Why accountability in the traditional sense often fails, and how a supportive group offering healthy correction is much more effective for growth and transformation. How autism impacts the identity center of the brain and its implications for marital relationships This episode sets the stage for a series on identity and attachment, touching on grief, resilience, and sacred attachment, with upcoming guests offering complementary perspectives. If you're curious about how brain development, faith, and neurodiversity intersect — especially within marriage and community — this episode provides both insight and encouragement. About Our Guest Dr. Jim Wilder:Dr. Jim Wilder has been training leaders and counselors for over 30 years on five continents. Jim grew up in South America and is bilingual (English/Spanish). He is the author of nineteen books with a strong focus on maturity and relational skills. Dr. Wilder has served as a guest lecturer at Fuller Seminary, Biola, Talbot Seminary, Point Loma University, Montreat College, Tyndale Seminary, and elsewhere. Dr. Jim Wilder has extensive clinical counseling experience and is the chief neurotheologian of Life Model Works, a nonprofit working at the intersection of theology and brain science. Life Model Works builds on the fifty-year legacy of Shepherd's House, which began in the 1970s as a ministry to street kids in Van Nuys, California. In those early days, Jim worked with the team of volunteer counselors and Fuller Seminary faculty to build a counseling center to help broken people recover from negative habits, addictions, abuse, and trauma. By the 1990s, Jim was Assistant Director and later Executive Director of Shepherd's House, helping hundreds of pastors and churches with their toughest counseling cases. Jim was intimately involved in 1987 when Shepherd's House conducted a careful review of why some people with the same level of trauma and treatment recovered, but others did not. The results of this case-by-case study became The Life Model, a new recovery model. The Life Model study findings were published in Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You. For the first time in history, archaeologists are excavating the ancient city of Colossae, the very place Paul addressed his letter to the Colossians and to Philemon. Dr. Arnold explains the significance of Colossae in the New Testament world, the challenges of getting an excavation approved in modern Türkiye, and what discoveries could reveal about the spiritual and cultural background behind Paul’s warnings to the Colossian church. From mosaics hidden under farmland to ground-penetrating radar scans that point to buried temples, this is a fascinating look at how history, archaeology, and Scripture intersect. Today, I sit down with my 21-year-old son, Scottie, to briefly unpack a startling street conversation in New York City. While running a “Change My Mind” table at Union Square, he met a self-described Satanist who reached for tarot cards when asked about the identity of Jesus. According to my guest Steve Dabbs, author of "When Demons Surface," this was a genuine demonic encounter. We show part of the encounter, and then analyze the experience through the lens of scripture. Is There Life After Death? Scholar Analyzes 500+ Cases over 50 Years. Gary Habermas was one of the first Christian scholars to study near-death experiences in the early 1970s. Thus, he has been studying them over 5 decades! How has the evidence changed? According to Dr. Habermas, we have hundreds of NEW documented, evidential cases just in the past few years. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Habermas about the cases he has collected and analyzed. Some involve accurate details observed miles away from the patient's body, blind individuals seeing for the first time and verifiable medical data that naturalistic explanations simply cannot explain. Peter Singer has been called the most influential living philosopher. At 79, he’s still active, sharp, and shaping global conversations on ethics. Singer is an atheist and a secular utilitarian. While we disagree on many fundamentals, we sat down to explore possible common ground on poverty, ethics, and how we treat animals while also clarifying our differences. This isn’t a debate on God’s existence, but an open dialogue between two worldviews. Enjoy, and let us know what you think! For decades, we’ve been told that humans and chimpanzees are 99% genetically identical a claim repeated in museums, textbooks and by science celebrities like Bill Nye. But new genomic research tells a very different story. In this episode, Dr. Casey Luskin joins to reveal why the “1% difference” statistic is outdated, misleading, and scientifically inaccurate. We discuss how this number became one of evolution’s most popular talking points, why it persists despite being debunked, and what the latest studies actually show about human-chimp DNA. What happens when atheists who expect nothing after death report vivid visions of an afterlife? Dr. Steve Miller returns to unpack surprising cases of near-death experiences, deathbed visions, and other phenomena that challenge a purely naturalistic worldview. Some involve accurate details observed miles away from the patient’s body, blind individuals seeing for the first time and verifiable medical data that naturalistic explanations simply cannot explain. A new book is just out offering a way for Christians to have "constructive conversations on sexuality and gender." While I am fully in support of constructive conversations (one of my goals is to model them here on YouTube) this book deeply concerns me. In this video, I do a deep-dive with Dr. Scott Rae, my Talbot School of Theology colleague and Think Biblically Podcast co-host. Let me know what you think. As always, I am open for opposing views, but on a topic this divisive, please keep comments constructive. We're back to Biola this week...kinda. Yes, Lacey Bond attended that school and was a "good" christian woman who followed all the rules. But while there, she was encouraged to ask questions and think creatively. This would prove lethal to her closely held fundamentalist, purity culture-soaked faith. It would eventually lead her to question everything and being exploring her identity as a woman and a sexual being. And through a series of life events, Lacey became a licensed Sex and Relationship coach, specializing in kink and non-traditional relationships. Want to know how someone goes from Biola dream student to complete sex-positivity? Lacey's story is one example. Is it time for the church to set aside theological differences about the morality of same sex unions and gender identity and find common ground in the Gospel? Is same sex marriage a disputable issue that should not divide us believers? According to a new book, the answer to both these questions is yes. The book is called Christlike Acceptance Across Deep Difference and is co-edited by Ron Pierce, a non-affirming scholar who worked at Biola for five decades, and Karen Keen, an affirming scholar. ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California. Today on the AgNet NewsHour, Nick Papagni and Lorrie Boyer hosted Don Cameron, President of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture, to discuss the many challenges and opportunities facing California farmers today. Cameron, who also manages his own farms in the Biola area, shared expert insights from both a policy and practical farming perspective. Labor Challenges in California Agriculture A central topic of conversation was labor in agriculture. Cameron emphasized the critical importance of a stable workforce for California's labor-intensive crops. He highlighted the need for programs like H2A, which allows temporary workers to enter the country legally, and stressed the benefits of providing long-term workers with some form of legalization so they can continue working without fear. Cameron noted that without reliable labor, food production in California—and by extension, the United States—would be significantly disrupted. Water Management and Sustainable Farming Water management was another major focus. Cameron discussed the need for sustainable groundwater practices, especially as regulations limit pumping in over drafted basins. He stressed that farmers must maximize the value of every drop of water, focusing on high-value crops and reducing overall usage. While ideal solutions such as new storage and water delivery systems may take decades, Cameron encouraged efficiency and strategic planning for the long-term sustainability of California agriculture. Automation and Agricultural Innovation To address labor challenges, Cameron's operations are embracing automation and innovation. He described experiments with mechanical and laser weeders and drone technology, highlighting the potential for these tools to improve efficiency and offset labor shortages. These investments, along with careful crop management, help farmers remain competitive in a challenging global market. Competing with Global Agriculture Cameron addressed how California farmers face challenges from cheaper imports from countries like Mexico and Brazil. While international labor costs are lower, California farms provide higher wages, better working conditions, and sustainable practices. Consumers supporting local produce, he said, is essential for maintaining a competitive edge. Financial Pressures and Pest Management Cameron also addressed the financial pressures facing farmers, including low commodity prices, rising costs, abandoned farmland, and pest challenges such as rodents destroying orchards and drip systems. He encouraged small and young farmers to take advantage of programs through CDFA and NRCS to maintain stability and remain viable in a high-cost environment. California Agriculture: A National Treasure Overall, Cameron praised California agriculture as a national treasure, capable of producing over 400 crops efficiently and sustainably. His insights underscored the resilience, innovation, and careful planning required for the state's agricultural industry to thrive amid complex environmental, economic, and regulatory pressures. For more updates on California agriculture, visit AgNet West at AgNetWest.com and follow their podcast on your preferred platform.
“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.” —Proverbs 11:24Scripture calls us to be both wise savers and generous givers—but holding those two together can feel like a tension. How do we avoid fear on one side and foolishness on the other? Dr. Shane Enete joins us today to show how these two principles actually go hand in hand.Dr. Shane Enete is an Associate Professor of Finance at Biola University and founded the Biola Center for Financial Planning. He is also the author of the book Whole Heart Finances: A Jesus-Centered Guide to Managing Your Money with Joy.Living in the TensionJohn Wesley famously wrote, “Earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can.” It sounds simple enough, but when you sit down with a budget, the statement can feel more like a paradox than a plan. After all, how can you both save as much as you can and give as much as you can? At some point, choices must be made.Rather than resolving the paradox with rigid rules, we encourage believers to embrace the complexity as part of the Christian life.In the absence of clarity, many of us make rules. One common example is the “80/10/10 rule”—give 10%, save 10%, and live on the remaining 80%. While this framework may be helpful, we must also be cautious that this can risk reducing Christian stewardship to legalism. The Christian life is a paradox. Christ Himself is a paradox—fully God and fully man. When we encounter a paradox, we shouldn't flatten it into a rule. Instead, we're invited into a relationship with God and to walk with Him in the tension.Stewardship as ArtSo how do we approach the paradox of saving and giving without rigid formulas? We should think of stewardship more as an art rather than a science. Just as Jesus used metaphors—such as sheep, seeds, trees, and vines—to describe the mysteries of the Kingdom, we too can use metaphors to navigate the complexity of money.Art allows us to co-create with God, and it moves us from rule-keeping to relationship, from legalism to a life that draws us closer to Him and to one another. One compelling metaphor is water. Water is life-giving when it flows, but when it stagnates, it becomes toxic. In the same way, money is meant to flow—received from God and passed on to bless others.Of course, saving is still essential—as it's like a reservoir that ensures water can flow steadily—but the point is not the reservoir itself. It's the flow that revitalizes both the giver and those who receive. The call to “save all you can, give all you can” is not a puzzle to be solved but a paradox to be lived. By resisting the urge to reduce it to rigid formulas and instead embracing stewardship as a creative act with God, we discover a more life-giving way to approach money. The flow is what matters. That's what brings life. You can read Dr. Enete's full article—and gain access to other exclusive resources—by becoming a FaithFi Partner. Could a first-century Jewish historian offer one of the most compelling extra-biblical confirmations of Jesus’ life? In this episode, Dr. Thomas Schmidt, a Yale Ph.D. and author of Josephus and Jesus: New Evidence for the One Called Christ, is here to explore the controversial Testimonium Flavianum, a passage in Josephus’ Antiquities that remarkably affirms key Christian beliefs: Jesus’ miracles, His messianic role, and even His resurrection. How can God be all-present (omnipresent) and yet be located in the temple and indwell believers? How can God know everything (omniscient) if He doesn't know what it is like to sin? How do we engage our friends, family and others around controversial issues, particularly those in science? Why do these controversial issues trigger emotional responses and how do we manage our emotions in these discussions? We'll discuss these questions and more with our guest, Talbot colleague in philosophy, Dr. Tim Pickavance around some new research he and other Biola profs have been doing. Dr. Tim Pickavance is broadly interested in the core areas of analytic philosophy, though he specializes in metaphysics. After completing his M.A. in Philosophy here at Talbot, he found himself in Austin at the University of Texas, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2008. He is thrilled to be a part of Biola and Talbot, contributing to the development of Christian philosophers who want to impact our culture in various venues, from academia to their churches to their personal friendships. ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California.
