Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) board The “Defiant” and head to Cardassian space. Along the way we talk at length about Tom Riker's facial hair, analyze how Star Trek discusses terrorists and terrorism in this pre 9/11 episode and at the 46 minute mark we do a recap of Picard Season 3 and analyze how the season leaned heavily into nostalgia. Matthew considers if he's willing to live without his own facial hair and Jo info dumps about the lineage of Enterprise ships while using her own ship models to illustrate. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Defiant Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 9 of Deep Space Nine: Defiant. In this episode, we have a very special guest star in Jonathan Frakes...but it's a Jonathan Frakes with sideburns (that is a clue of something apparently)? Also in this episode, we have a very cranky over-worked Kira whose head is turned when Riker turns on his charm. Defiant Kira is having a bad day and is snapping at everyone. Bashir eventually decides she needs a vacation and orders her off duty and into Quark's for some "fun." While she's chilling at Quark's she meets (supposedly) William T. Riker from the Enterprise. They spend a fun evening together chatting and Kira is distracted by his charm and beauty....in fact...she's so distracted that she gives him access to the Defiant's systems...and whooops....shouldn't have done that, because this in fact is not Will Riker! And we are in for some big trouble. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. One of the reasons we love Deep Space Nine is its consistent tendency to defy our expectations. This episode is no exception, as it brings Jonathan Frakes in for a guest starring role, but defiantly casts him as Tom Riker instead of Will Riker, and then defies your expectation yet again by making this Tom Riker-starring vehicle into a Sisko-Dukat caper. We are reaching Maquis levels of sadness yet again here, thanks to this episode where everything is complicated and nobody really wins. But apart from our sadness for the fate of ol’ Tommy Rikes, it wouldn’t be a Reopening the Wormhole discussion without brief forays into things like 90s handheld video game console Sega Game Gear, unnecessary Twilight Zone references, another discussion about nature vs. nurture vis a vis Tom Riker, and, of course, Jonathan Frakes’s undisputed masterpiece of filmmaking, Clockstoppers. Barm joins us for this depressing, exciting, and entrancing episode of Deep Space Nine.
When an overworked Kira tries to impress Commander William Riker by showing him the USS Defiant, she instead sets into motion a plan that might result in a Federation-Cardassian war. Also, it's not Will Riker at all! It's Tom Riker! Remember him? DS9 continues to examine the meaning of identity by bringing Tom Riker into the fold and having him try to walk the line between the worldviews of TNG and DS9. Can a TNG character, even a troubled one like Tom Riker, manage to bring a little bit of TNG ethos into the cynical world of DS9? Darren and Clay stop by to discuss lame reveals, the blossoming Dukat and Sisko relationship, and the tragedy of Tom Riker! Are you looking for older episodes?
