Nothing quite like the local highly charismatic genocidal bad guy to be your zany road trip partner as we review "The Maquis Pt 2". While Cal Hudson still sucks, everything else about this episode is rad. We got fights against Space Toyota Technicals, plenty of sinister dialogue, and we even get to see Quark win an argument with The World's Hottest Vulcan.

Kathryn Janeway. The lead character of Star Trek: Voyager did a lot for her crew in seven years.  To trying to merge the Starfleet and Maquis crews after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, to try and doing several alliances with the Kazon and the Borg, Kathryn Janeway has done it all.  Her experiences as trying to hold the ideals of the Federation made her the perfect candidate for the Emergency Training Hologram version for the Starship Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy.   In this episode of Twin Cities Trekkies, which continues the 30 Years of Star Trek: Voyager Celebration, Wes has decided to rebroadcast Episode 35 (at least, the discussion part) to showcase the fourth main character analysis that he and Kenzie did back on January 26, 2022. The Lafayette Bicentennial Tour planning committee in Lancaster County is preparing for a tour this summer. Kathleen Hood, Coordinator of the Lafayette200 Bicentennial in Lancaster and Western Chester Counties, says this is part of the nationwide commemoration that is the brainchild of the nonprofit, The American Friends of Lafayette. “The whole goal of this commemoration is to celebrate, commemorate Lafayette's triumphant farewell tour of America in 1824 and ’25. This nonprofit reached into various communities that Lafayette actually visited to identify coordinators who would assemble planning committees. Hundreds of events are being planned nationwide to trace Lafayette's footsteps and the exact dates in the exact order in the 24 states Lafayette visited on his tour here in Lancaster County.” The commemoration will take place July 27-29. The committee will host multiple events showcasing Lafayette’s journey through Lancaster. “Well, our committee has been planning for the past three years the events that will basically be walking in the footprints of Lafayette by mirroring where he went, with whom he met, what he did while visiting our very area in 1825.” Hood shared the importance of remembering and honoring the history of Maquis de Lafayette and his moments in Lancaster. “I would say that it's absolutely no wonder that Lafayette's 13 month farewell tour of the then 24 states in 1824 and 1825 has become called the Triumphal Tour. Wherever he went, his journey along the Lafayette Trail, he was treated like the biggest celebrity that this country had ever seen. He was a true rock star in 1825 here in Lancaster County. And we're looking to recreate that excitement, that passion and that true understanding of what this American hero actually gave to each and every one of us.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode contains: We three hosts gobbled up Thanksgiving, celebrating with families, parents and in-laws. Why did Ford call their electric car a Mach-E? Or is it Maquis? A Mockery? Ben gives a slightly different (and more positive) take on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice than Devon's review from a couple months ago (https://sciencefactionpodcast.com/2024/09/11/episode-522-incomprehensibly-gravelly/). The first half hour is definitely rough but it comes together, in the back half especially. Big shout-out to the production design of the afterlife and the cameos. Devon's a pickleball-player now, and we contrast it with racquetball. Steven and his family saw Moana 2 and opinions varied wildly among the family. Don't expect a Lin Manuel Miranda soundtrack, but do expect them to set up a bunch of sequels.   Future or Now:   Right now, in the 1960s: Ben's ready to spoil The Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.” On a peaceful suburban street, strange occurrences and mysterious people stoke the residents' paranoia to a disastrous intensity. This is nearly REQUIRED VIEWING for anyone on the internet these days. “The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.” Despite this being a story very inspired by McCarthyism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism), our current paranoia about our neighbors needs to stop.   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734664/   Three things to ponder (“Eat the 1%”): Devon wonders why don't we eat turkey eggs? It's all about the downsides: even though they're not hazardous, turkeys have slower egg production, larger size and space requirements, and tougher egg shells than chickens. Why will some pets (especially dogs) eat their dead owners, even when there's food available? The current hypothesis is that the dogs are trying to frantically wake up their owners, and after biting the face, their instinct takes over. Also, the Higgs particle only accounts for 1% of the mass of an object.   https://www.iflscience.com/turkey-eggs-why-dont-we-eat-them-77017   Get over here! (Don't “TOASTY” me): Steven brings us this morsel of news: a tiny, four-fingered 'hand' folded from a single piece of DNA can pick up the virus that causes COVID-19 for highly sensitive rapid detection and can even block viral particles from entering cells to infect them, researchers report. Dubbed the NanoGripper, the nanorobotic hand also could be programmed to interact with other viruses or to recognize cell surface markers for targeted drug delivery, such as for cancer treatment. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/11/241127165721.htm   “Book Club” This week: Big Oxygen by exurb1a A janitor on a spaceship wakes up from an emergency alarm to complete bedlam. Every group he runs across has a different ideology, in fact, their baseline ideologies have been erased, and it doesn't go well for anyone. Voyager's chief engineer is beloved for a variety of reasons, and we break them all down in this essential episode of TrekRanks – “The Top 5 B'Elanna Torres Episodes.” From the Maquis to Starfleet, B'Elanna Torres showcased a myriad of skills, qualities and styles in her seven years on Voyager, fighting and defeating more than a few personal demons along the way. Portrayed by Roxann Dawson, there's no doubt how popular Torres was, and our panel of host Jim Moorhouse and guests Daniel Martin, Teresa Jusino and Anjali Mathai go deep with the picks. No recalibration necessary to sitback and enjoy the “Top 5 B'Elanna Torres Episodes.”  Episode Rundown:  Diagnostic Cycle: We go through our normal character episode roll call and remind everyone that we call this a “top 5 episode” topic, but you can just as easily choose a small moment as you can a big character episode. El hispanista británico, Paul Preston, los historiadores Secundino Serrano, Francisco Moreno Gómez, Fernanda Romeu Alfaro y Justo Vila-Izquierdo analizan la figura de estos guerrilleros

Sometimes a game knows us better than we know ourselves. Rolling Reggie joins us to discuss games that subverted our expectations. Kenan tries to recreate one of his game-changing gaming experiences for friends and strangers alike. Alba greets our guest with a superfly icebreaker. Kenan takes accountability for his tile-based crimes. Then we consider some games that managed to surprise us when we thought we'd seen it all while Alba does her victory dance. Finally, we hear about what sorts of base diversions surprise the Rabble. Discussed: Spirit Island, Coffee Rush, Akropolis, Kingdomino, Memoir '44, Votes for Women, Captain Sonar, Battleship, Vale of Eternity, Winners' Circle, Pandemic, Just One, Bang the Dice Game, Kodama, Halls of Hegra, Maquis, Catan, Too Many Bones, Sky Team, Next Station London, innovations that become commonplace, balance, exploiting the strategy less traveled by, board game baristas, boardless games, variable turn order, knowable quantities, simple games that allow for expertise, private metas, the relativity of game weight, the appeal of aggressive games, playing the bad guy, meeting your friends' board game dads, self-discovery through gaming, being too cool, novelty deflation, childish games, floppers, accidental cheating, simultaneous turns, player interaction, asymmetry in coops, war themes in Euros, acclimating to heavy games, the value of lavish productions, productions that punch above their weight, and how to talk to Kayden about the Punchboard Cathedral podcast. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) record our pod “For The Cause” as we talk about mother fucking Eddington and The Maquis. We relitigate the validity of The Maquis' position and justification for their “terrorist” actions, we consider how this episode complicates the relationship between Ben and Kassidy and even though we hate him, we have to give it up to Eddington for absolutely, completely wrecking Sisko in this episode. Matthew asks if there's a lot of promiscuity in Federation penal colonies and Jo rants about the whole Garak and Ziyal “thing” As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
