My guest this week is writer Christopher Tradowsky, who loves nothing more than to slip into the sanctuary of an old-fashioned movie palace, to commune with strangers all indulging together in whatever escape is unspooling up on the screen. These days, those great vintage movie houses are getting harder to find. But Christopher's extending an invitation to discover that magic through his new book, Midnight at the Cinema Palace, a novel about three friends — or maybe more? — whose love of film draws them into a 1990s-era film noir. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. You may also enjoy my YouTube videos about the making of iconic movies and TV shows — I have a new video about the magic of Star Trek's Lwaxana Troi. And check out my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my free email newsletter. There's links to all that in the episode shownotes, and at MattBaume.com.Also -- if you're in Seattle, come grab a signed copy of my book, Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, hang out and chat about great queer comedy, and pick up some freebies next Sunday June 8 -- I'll be at Northgate Barnes & Noble, signing books & showing my favorite sitcom clips. It's right off the Northgate light rail stop -- see you there!

“The Forsaken” 30th-anniversary reflections When the ambassadors of arrogance visit the station for a fact-finding mission, the crew's hospitality is put to the test. But no one faces a bigger challenge than Odo, who finds himself being pursued by Lwaxana Troi. The situation becomes more uncomfortable when data downloaded from an unknown probe infects the station's systems and triggers a series of failures, leaving Odo and Lwaxana trapped together in a turbolift. Forced to open up to one another, both reveal truths about themselves that they keep hidden from others. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. It's the 500th episode of the Sewers of Paris, and to celebrate James and I are doing a special Q&A with questions sent in by listeners! Huge thanks to everyone who sent questions, and let me know if you'd like to hear more episodes like these! And as requested by patron David, here are some of my favorite early episodes for anyone who wants to get started with the podcast, or jump back and re-listen:Camp is like Pornography (Ep. 1: Eurovision)I was Quite Happy to be the Villain (Ep. 2: Julian and Sandy)Not a Fan of Hanging Around in Reality (Ep. 36 - Steve Kmetko)The Person I was in Namibia and the Person I am Now (Ep. 44 - Desperate Housewives)The Joke of Being Gay (Ep. 45 - Polyester & Arrested Development)I Embrace Being High-Strung (Ep. 50 - Louis Virtel & Jeopardy!)You Don't Want to See Minnie Mouse Take Her Head Off (Ep. 63 - Ben DeLaCreme)A Kid Who Had Powers in Japan (Ep. 79 - Sailor Moon)A Need to be Doused in Black Culture - (Ep. 95 - Sonari Glinton)A Big Purple Man in a Loin Cloth (Ep. 96 - Gargoyles)My Life is Drama -- Make me Laugh (Ep. 100 - Dan Savage)Failed Mystics (Ep. 114: Buffy, X-Men, He-Man, and Lwaxana Troi)
The Forsaken (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), S1 E17) was recommended by Rugger (They/them), who said: The Forsaken has its problems as an episode, including that Troi's advances are uncomfortable to watch. But in all of Trek, there is no more emotionally raw, powerful, and moving scene than in The Forsaken. Odo and Lwaxwana are stuck in the elevator, and Odo has to revert into his natural liquid state—and he has to trust Lwaxana to do it.This is Trek at its best: taking something fundamentally alien and using it to humanize a character. Almost every other time an alien evokes such pathos, they are being human—as Kirk says of Spock, "he was the most human."Odo's character arc is one of the best in Trek, and this episode starts it off with the most unique, iconic, and moving scene that I can think of in all sci-fi, while also developing a a character who was previously only comedic relief. The Forsaken first aired on January 18, 1993, written by story by Jim Trombetta, teleplay by Don Carlos Dunaway and Michael Piller, and directed by Les LandauThe Federation ambassador from Betazed, Lwaxana Troi, visits the station, and develops an affection for Odo. Meanwhile, data from a mysterious Gamma Quadrant probe causes system failures on DS9.The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook
The mother-in-law all of us fear but none of us deserve drops in to the local DOOM level in "The Forsaken". Between the half baked A and C plots, you know an episode is bad when the Lwaxana Troi is the best part. Is the Odo backstory worth the price of admission? Come find out!
The Enterprise D is just trying to help revive a dead star for the residents of Kaelon II when the visiting Lwaxana Troi gets all twitter pated over Timicin, a scientist from Kaelon II who happens to be played by David Ogden Stiers from M.A.S.H. Things all go pear shaped when the dying star keeps dying, and Timicin is scheduled to join them. Seems the residents of Kaelon II have this wacky deal where they commit ritual suicide at 60 years of age, but Lwaxana isn't having it. Will Picard go to war with Kaelon II to save Lwaxana's boyfriend? Will Deanna Tori get any significant screen time? Will David Ogden Stiers find a bra that works for him? Episode Notes Defiant: You know this is a utopia when the doctor can order vacations. Dax clearly thinks that Kira banged Riker. Because Dax also clearly banged Riker. You know something's wrong when someone is mean to O'Brien. Villainous Goatee! What happens if you put aluminum foil in the replicator? Kira being the A-plot main character is very pre-2001. Using the Maqis and the Bajoran rebellion as examples of morally grey terrorism is not ideal. Reading Enterprise logs must be sanity-wrecking. Fascination: DS9 does a sex farce. Bashir has significant leeway to diagnose colleagues as "assholes". Lwaxana Troi may be the galaxy's worst seatmate, but it is pretty fun to see her making Odo uncomfortable. What ARE jumja sticks? Oh hey, Xanthi fever. Sisko knows something's wrong when people want to cancel dinner. Jake has rizz. Lwaxana's Google Alerts include Odo, Captain Picard, and sex festivals. On the other hand, the O'Briens' relationship plot feels really grounded and realistic. We are joined this week by Nathan Polette and Steve Duda! Lwaxana Troi invented Tinder. You heard it here first, kids! Alexander teaches us all a life lesson on whether to be nude at your weddings. Before that, Lwaxana teaches young Alexander about mud baths and creepy circus performers and the importance of laughing hour. Before that, Troi teaches Worf about the power of signing contracts with your children so that they perform chores like every good Klingon does. Ooh, it's a chilling week on "Enterprise". First up: is a transporter issue turning Hoshi into a g-g-g-ghost in "Vanishing Point"? After that, YOU decide what's more terrifying: how lazy the very familiar plot of "Precious Cargo" is, or the absolutely abysmal acting of its principal guest star! Episode Notes Jude bucks for a promotion. Justen is sleepy. The Forsaken: Wait, what is that music? It's... it can't be. It's Lwaxana Troi! The most DTF character in Star Trek. The Lwaxana/Odo pairing is spectacular. "The thin beige line between order and chaos" nearly killed Jude. Sisko is in dad mode all day. Has Odo ever had "the talk"? Lots of great one-liners this episode. O'Brien Suffers Level: a new puppy. Dramatis Personae: Alien fuckery! A new clock for Sisko! Nothing else in this episode matters in the least bit. At least the actors had fun. O'Brien Suffers Level: the audience suffers worse. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Was ist besser als Lwaxana Troi? Drei mal Lwaxana Troi.
Februar 1996.
If last week's episode of LOWER DECKS gave us the "triple threat girls trip" then this week might best be described as the "triple threat Lwaxana Troi episode." It's the crew of the Cerritos versus not one, but THREE crazy ladies from Betazed! Of course with this being LOWER DECKS it isn't quite what it looks like so grab a stool at the ship's bar and let's discuss. We've got our first guest star in today's episode as we get the nonstop machine of comics crowdfunding Matthew Hardy to join us in talking about the First Lady of Star Trek: Majel Barrett! Majel's been in so many episodes, hell, so many SERIES of Star Trek over the years, so there's a lot to work with here. We've got shockingly little Majel in the TOS episode that ostensibly is a spotlight focus on her. Then we're in to the wild world of Lwaxana Troi as she gets kidnapped by Ferengi in TNG and that version of the Ferengi are the absolute worst. Like Internet Guy worst. Finally we get a surprisingly nice pairing of Lwaxana and Odo stuck in a lift together as a weird life form from the Gamma Quadrant has got into the computers. 20:13 TOS: What Are Little Girls Made of? 48:37 TNG: Ménage a Troi 1:11:18 DS9: The Forsaken Talking points include: Westworld (both flavours), Babylon 5, Only Murders in the Building, Righteous Gemstones, Adam X the X-Treme, Ahsoka, Classic Dr Who, FMV PC games, Charlie's back on his Lost bullshit, From, Amnesiac City, Two time GLAAD award winner Peter Allan David, The Matrix, Terminator, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, The UK Office amount of awkwardness, Shoggoths, Tiny Clangers, The Prisoner, Legion of Super-Heroes fashion, Mario Kart-based declarations of love, Vampire: The Masquerade, The Mos Eisley Cantina Band, Lucille Bluth, Lwaxana Troi going full Mrs Bennet, Picard giving it all Shakespeare, More Classic Dr Who, Lord of the Rings for the SNES, Gilmore Girls, Tamagochi, War of the Worlds. Wow! Two episodes in one! This week, we talk about how much of a queen Lwaxana Troi is as she struggles with the concept of senicide, and later, Dr. Crusher falls in love with a Trill and ends up having sex with Riker.
Guest stars galore. It must have been sweeps week. David Ogden Stiers from M*A*S*H and Better Off Dead fame is a scientist who's really good at blowing up stars. Err, I mean, shooting torpedoes to make stars not blow up. I think. Lwaxana Troi is hot to trot with Scientist Stimson until he says he's a few days away from turning 60 and on Kaelon 2 that means death. Then she gets super heated. Supernova mad, in fact. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) explore the “Fascination” of the Bajoran Gratitude Festival. We debate the effectiveness of silly/playful episodes in Star Trek, we analyze the depiction of marriage in this episode and we defend how Lwaxana Troi was unfairly treated in this episode. Matthew asks how Miles survived drinking five cups of coffee in twenty minutes and Jo celebrates Bashir's slutty little outfit.
While ferrying the fish-like Antedeans to a diplomatic conference, the Enterprise is intercepted by a shuttle transporting Lwaxana Troi! Not seen since season 1, Lwaxana has returned and is experiencing "The Phase", a time in the mid-life of a Betazed woman where her libido has quadrupled - she's on the hunt for a new husband! Also, Dixon Hill comes back this episode! Ruthie and Matthew talk about consent in dating culture, trigonometry, and how they actually enjoy Data's anecdotes.

This time around, they're talking about a prettay prettay good season four episode, Ben's Birthday Party (which also means being sad about no Leon). With the surprising return of Michael the blind pianist, they take the opportunity to delve into the life of Helen Keller, revisit peak Stiller-mania, talk tits and scrotes, the appeal of Lwaxana Troi, that weird trilogy of animated Netflix Godzilla movies and so much more. When someone tells you no gifts, just bring ‘em THIS podcast.
Lwaxana Troi returns to the Enterprise D, and this time she's attending a reception following a trade conference on Betazed. It appears she's caught the eye of a lascivious Ferengi, Daimon Tog, who wants her for business . . . and pleasure. When Lwaxana tells him to take a space hike, Tog decides the proper solution is to kidnap her AND her daughter (Troi) AND her daughter's Imzadi (Riker)! It's a genuine cluster fuck as the Family Riker-Troi tires to escape their Ferengi captors. All this, and Wesley is due for his orals! Will Picard discover his crew is in peril? Will Troi and Riker get busy . . . escaping? Will someone please get Majel a turtle neck? Half a Life! Star Trek: The Next Generation, Series 2, Episode 19. First broadcast on Monday, 19 June 1989. Our writers are on strike this week, and so we're just going to mark time until we reach the end of this blurb. When an uncomfortably horny Lwaxana Troi beams aboard the Enterprise, a series of events happen, culminating at last in the episode's closing credits. Mick Fleetwood guest stars as a fish.
The hostage nobody wants is none other than Lwaxana Troi in Majel Barrett's triumphant return to the role her husband Gene described as the Auntie Mame of the Galaxy. The Ferengi don't put on too good a look here, with Damon Tog capturing mother and daughter Troi and chess club boy toy Riker before any nookie can occur. Lwaxana distracts with the Ferengi version of oral while Wesley Crusher trains for his own oral exam, if you know what I mean. Everything works out in the end when Picard professes his love of his big ole warp engines and Wesley gets promoted to full-on ensign, much to our very special Canadian guest correspondent Shelly Coley-Donohue. Jimmie G has found a kindred spirit in Shelly's distaste for the young and no longer "acting: ensign. Get in touch with us on Twitter @ReEngageTNG!
This week, we meet some Irish caricatures, and Lwaxana Troi is down bad for a hologram.
Ep. 211 - Half a LifeIt's the return of some many things this week on Warped. First the return of Lwaxana Troi and all the horniness that comes with her. More importantly it's the return of Corrections Corner with a double dose of corrections. Which means we talk about penis vs ball size. You know its tough to be funny watching an episode that's basically trying to argue old people aren't useless but we try. All this plus what's the story with Gates's hair: Wig or not. Plus it finally happens, Google gets asked a question it can't answer. Way to go Phillipe!!!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Muse Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to season 4, episode 20: The Muse where Lwaxana Troi turns up with a big surprise and a creepy alien preys on Jake's writing talents. Even though the creepy alien is supposed to be the muse, we also learn that Lwaxana has had a similar muse-like impact on Odo! There are some surprises in this wildly underrated episode and also some genuine "ewww" moments. It's always nice to see a guest appearance from Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, but we also have an interesting performance from Meg Foster as the alien. The Muse In this episode a creepy alien turns up and starts sucking the life force out of Jake while supposedly turning him into a great writer. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she didn't also rub it all over herself while hiding out with him in the bowels of the station. I mean this is gross. Meanwhile, Lwaxana Troi turns up pregnant and in need of help from Odo who in this episode surprises himself when he examines their relationship. Turns out he kind of digs her. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines.
