In s2e29, Platemark hosts Ann Shafer and Tru Ludwig talk about Claude Lorrain, the arbiter of landscape painting in the 17th century. He worked most of his life in Rome and elevated landscape as a subject up the academic hierarchy by including small figural groups and naming the compositions with mythological or biblical subjects. He's known by various names that can be confusing. He was born Claude Gelée in the independent duchy of Lorraine, which is why the French call him le Lorrain. The English, who collected his works assiduously and even now have the highest number of his works (by country), refer to him simple as Claude. He created an amazing cache of ink and wash drawings of each of his painted compositions in a first catalogue raisonné of sorts. He dubbed this book the Liber Veritatis («the book of truth»). Claude told his biographer Filippo Baldinucci that he kept the record as a defense against others passing off his work as theirs. This bound group of drawings was collected and owned by the Dukes of Devonshire from the 1720s until 1957 when it was given to the British Museum (in lieu of estate taxes upon the death of Victor Christian William Cavendish, the 9th Duke of Devonshire). While Claude died in 1682, his renown in England was enough to prompt the print publisher John Boydell to hire artist Richard Earlom to create prints after the drawings nearly one hundred years after Claude's death. Two hundred etchings with mezzotint were created between 1774 and 1777, and were published in two volumes as Liber Veritatis. Or, A Collection of Two Hundred Prints, After the Original Designs of Claude le Lorrain, in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Devonshire, Executed by Richard Earlom, in the Manner and Taste of the Drawings.... Later, a third volume of an additional 100 prints was published in 1819. Earlom used etching to mimic Claude's ink lines and mezzotint for the wash areas. They were printed in brown ink to mimic iron gall ink. Hugely influential in England, the books were popular with collectors and were used by artists as models for copying. The Liber Veritatis also inspired J.M.W. Turner to produce a similar project of 71 prints after Turner's painted compositions, which he called Liber Studiorum. They may appear old fashioned to contemporary viewers, but rest assured, landscape was just getting its legs under it. Boring imagery? Maybe. But important for our story of the history of prints in the West. Episode image: Claude Lorrain (French, c. 1600–1682). Seaport with Ulysses Returning Chryseis to Her Father, c. 1644. WE'RE BACK AND WE'RE READY TO PARTY! Terminus returns with another overstuffed episode of ugly sounds, so we'll keep the preamble short: there's something for everyone on this one. But first, you'll have to cross the deadly moat of Et in Arcadia Ego, a PABM project with an industrial-tinged take on French and Slavic black metal. It sounds kinda like black wind hissing in the gaps between enormous towers of unknown origin. First up: approximately the billionth full length by Swedish doomdeath stalwarts Runemagick. "Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind" will certainly be familiar to fans of the band, but this album perhaps more than others shows its cards in terms of influence: Runemagick is a doomdeath band which takes being a doom band very seriously, and the intricate wailing of Candlemass is just as important as anything more directly within the death metal realm. Come for the chug, stay for the bleak neoclassical diversions. Next up is Dødssanger, a House of Ygra affiliate which plunges directly into the murkiest depths of DSBM with little in the way of sentimentality or simple sadness. Caustic and miserable, at first blush this reminds the listener most clearly of Danish misery-peddlers Make a Change... Kill Yourself, but as the album proceeds, layers of influence and melodic experimentation are layered on top of the frail, ugly bones of the project, making for a full body much more than the sum of its parts. Wrapping things up is Blutschwur, a project already well known to many of our listeners which represents yet another attempt at fusing melodic black metal and stomping oi!/RAC. The result, though, is not what one might predict: Blutschwur is heavily invested in returning this style back to its home in black metal, and the sprawling, technically minded riffing suggests a scope far greater than its contemporaries. C'mon, look at the cover- you already like this one, but it contains further depths to explore. 0:00:00 Intro/Et in Arcadia Ego (US) - I (2023) 0:19:37 - Runemagick - Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind (Hammerheart Records) 0:57:59 - Interlude - Runemagick - “Where Death is the Key,” fr. What should we say of a man who claims to judge Homer’s Iliad, Racine’s Phèdre or Poussin’s Deluge as if they were stews or hams? – J.J. Rousseau, Letter to Père Lesage, 1754

(https://easy-greek.org/membership)
This week Jeff and Dave launch into the fascinating, often misunderstood world of Rome way, way back before there were Romans. As Aeneas readies for battle in the idyllic landscape, he needs some allies. So it's off a-paddlin' to Arcadia, where the rustic Greek king Evander and his momentous son Pallas make ready allies. While enjoying some old-fashioned hospitality, Evander tells our hero the long, digressive backstory of Greece's mightiest avenger: Hercules. On the way back from rustlin' Spanish cattle, Hercules got rustled himself by the smoke-belching Cacus. This troglodytic monster must be killed. But what does this mean for the epic as a whole and for Vergil's view of the Pax Augusta? Well to find out, warm up your jerri-can of coffee, chill your bucket of Diet Coke, and tuck in for a classical repast past its prime not at all.

Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2. The first season of Star Trek: Picard has come to an end, and opinions on the finale—and the season as a whole—have run the gamut from glowing praise to bitter criticism. Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1. The perceived danger of synthetic life has been an important theme in Star Trek: Picard since the pilot episode. In “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1,” we finally arrive at Soji's homeworld, Coppelius, and see a group of synthetic life forms that now must grapple with a threat to its existence. Meanwhile, the crew of La Sirena get caught in the middle as a Romulan fleet approaches. Things are getting down to the wire as JL and the gang encounter a rascally band of 1980's-themed androids. With Jesse on an away mission, Dan and Patrick fumble their way through ruminations on the nature of identity, the somewhat bizarre Star Trek tradition of pretending colleagues didn't murder people, and who we think might show up if Sutra and A.I. Soong manage to activate that beacon! We very much hope you enjoy this completely ridiculous 17th episode of It's Got Star Trek! Audio Clip from That Mitchell and Webb Look.
